Even in bad times, this is the team I wanted
Okay, this is going to be a bit long winded and full of emotional appeals, so stat heads and non-emotional types this is your heads up to eject now. Greg Oden is my favorite human being in the NBA. There are other guys who are better at what they do, and others who provide me with more jaw dropping “wow” moments when I watch them play, but there isn’t one guy in the NBA I would trade for GO – not LeBron, not Kobe, not Melo, nobody. Greg Oden is the living, breathing embodiment of everything I ranted, raved, and begged for during the era of the Patterson family (Reuben and Steve), Miles, Z Bo, Bonzi, and bad Sheed (good Sheed is probably getting ready for his ornament drive as we speak). I and many other people asked for the following things when the Rose Garden was 1/3 full and Z Bo was picking up skanks at the Greek Cusina – a team of guys who play hard, respect the fans, and give back to the community. Being a good, contending basketball team was a piece of this puzzle as well, but it was a piece in a larger whole. Give me a team a can feel good about, that’s what I asked for.
Greg Oden, Brandon Roy, LMA, Pryz, Travis Outlaw, Martell Webster, Rudy Fernandez and the crew are exactly what I asked for. Even Coach Mac and Steve Blake, who frustrate me from time to time with their schemes and play, are consummate pros and good family men who are busting their tails for this franchise. This is exactly what I said I wanted, and its here. Portland has a team it can be proud of, and that’s a big thing in NBA Green Bay, a one sport town rabid 24-7-365 for its hometown heroes.
This year was supposed to be a step toward the title. Instead, it’s looking like the Odyssey with ACLs – the ending may be okay, but the ride is not going to be all that fun. Watching Greg go down was like being punched in the stomach. I got choked up, I felt empty, and in the aftermath I admit that I’ve had my doubts if this squad will ever fulfill what I thought (and still believe) could be its championship potential. As of right now, I'm avoiding my radio and semi-glad Comcast is still reaching it's evil hand over my DirecTV dish, because I don't want to look at the Blazers without Greg.
In the aftermath of another injury to GO, inconsistent play from stars like Roy and LMA, and what can be deemed frustrating decisions by Nate, a lot of people have started to talk about shuffling the deck, including either trading or letting GO walk. To be 100% honest, maybe some of those drastic measures are necessary to bring a title to Portland. But if that’s the case, count me out. These guys are what I said I wanted when I was ready to wash my hands of the NBA. Injuries are things you can’t control, but despite that I am completely convinced that each of these guys will give us all the effort they can. That doesn’t mean the results will be what we want, or that Blake and Pryz will put up career numbers like they did last season. But one question that I will never need to ask about this team is are they trying, because the character of the men in that locker room won’t allow anything else. Add to that I still believe in the talent of the core of this roster. This is just a nightmare year from a health perspective, so I'll concede the battle of 09-10, but not the campaign.
Now, the NBA is a business, so I won’t be naive enough to pretend that there won’t be more Channing Frye moments where the Blazers and a hard working player need to part ways for whatever the reason. But the day I see this team out and out scrap a guy like Greg Oden is the day I become a fan of the game and not a team. If Greg, Brandon, and Martell can’t do anything more than make it to the first round for the next 10 years, then so be it. I’ve seen all three of those young men make true, sincere positive impacts on the lives of kids in this community, and most of the interactions I was privileged enough to have access to were not for cameras and won’t ever be the subject of a column. This is the team I wanted, and this is the team I asked for. Is it somewhat irrational to form an emotional attachment to a crew of 20 somethings who don’t know me from Adam – of course. But the fact that I know I am one of thousands who feel that way says something about who these guys are and what they are about. When Sheed left town, it was long overdue. When Z Bo left, it was a celebration for the fans. If one of those three bounced, particularly Greg, it would probably be tears. And the same goes for Rudy, Travis, LMA, and others, those are just the three who are my choices, with GO being the #1 guy.
Let’s think about recent history. The fact that the Rip City Blazers never won the title has done absolutely nothing to dim my memories and admiration for that team. It does not diminish my absolute joy that Terry Porter and Jerome Kersey are back in town, it didn’t make the feeling of shock and sadness when Duck passed any smaller, and it doesn’t lessen my ultimate Trail Blazer memory, when Clyde Drexler made the day of a fifth grader who showed up late to an autograph session by signing the back of my basketball jersey because that was the only thing I had with me he could write on. The way I felt about that team is how I feel about this squad. Winning is nice, mainly because this is one of those rare cities where you feel it with them and they way the whole city vibes when the team gets hot, but in the grand scheme of things, it’s not that important. What’s important is this is a group of guys we can all be proud of. They’re down this season, and in all honesty they may not get back up. Injuries will do that. But the main thing I asked myself is has anything other than the record and prospects for success changed for the worse between the beginning of the year and now. The answer for me is no, and on my admittedly sappy criteria for evaluating the Blazers, that clinches it. I hope these guys turn it around on the court because they deserve it, but if they don’t they are still my Portland Trail Blazers. And the day the organization starts jettisoning players like Greg Oden in pursuit of more Ws is the day they can become somebody else’s. #52.

Exactly, blazeraddict! Rec'd
I mean .. what is this strange thing “being a fan” all about? It’s all about feeling and heart, right? I can do stats along with the rest of them, but then I’d be a Yankee fan or L*kers fan.
I know I’m mixing my metaphors, or sports, or something. But you said it right. “Even in bad times, this is the team I wanted.”
.
there is def something to be said for the character of this team.
Can I ask others to rec this?
This is something we all need to read. Hey, John Canzano, maybe this should be your next column!??
LOL
I’ve never flagged you, must have been someone else….

Thank you so much
I have been avoiding BE lately because I was watching the games hours later, so I had to change my internet habits. I can’t shake what happened out of my mind though, and so many posts make the hurt so much more. I was in the Garden when things were bad, and I know the feeling of thinking "These guys don’t give a hoot about playing decent ball, and certainly not the fans.
I love this crew, especially Oden. I play basketball here in Japan on an ameteur team, and can you guess what my number is? I wouldn’t go so far as to say I won’t support the Blazers should they ship Oden, but I really hope that’s not where this is heading. I realize things are bad right now, and he seems to be fragile, but there are so many reasons to stick with him even still. First off is the charecter of the man, I agree. I also think he’s going to give us a better shot at a title than anyone else we could pick up. I do want a championship, and if the big guy can only pull out one full healthy season and give us that, I would rather have that than any number of titles with someone else. Year after year of first round loses though? I will say it’s time to take a different path, but not until we realize that is our path. And no, I won’t concede that until our core averages around 26. That should be when we start hitting our stride. That still gives us a few years to see if this pans out or falls apart (literally). I don’t think this was going to be a title year anyway, the injuries before this were dampening that dream. Now it seems they’ve done us in. I will come back to Portland for the 2010-2011 season. I kept my tickets, and it is a pain trying to deal with them from all the way over here.
I want to see Oden play a game in the Garden. I want to see him hoist a trophy over his head. This dream is not over. It’s just on hold.
It took my two years to come up with an avatar and sig
and this is the best I could come up with.
You wanted a team that won't give an effort vs. the Knicks?
Hey listen I’m all for good character guys but I want wins too. And failing wins, AT LEAST SOME EFFORT. I know, I’m a hard-ace
Blazer Fan
There was some sloppy play and poor shooting
but there was a lot of effort.
You tell me that the Knicks are going to shoot 13-26 on 3s, and we still hold them under 100, and I’ll say you’re crazy. That’s a lot of defensive effort being put out.
Aldridge gets 13 rebounds. Even Blake gets 5. We play long minutes without a true center on the floor, and long minutes with two PGs, and we still out-rebounded them.
Even if they shoot a good 10-26 on 3s, that’s a different game.
You don’t hold that team under 100 when they are hitting from outside unless you are putting out a lot of effort.
Our offense was pathetic, we had 20 turnovers, and our shooting was poor, but I can’t fault effort, in general. Sure, there were some plays where it was lacking, or there were mental breakdowns, but I didn’t see a lazy team out there. I saw a team that is all out of synch offensively, not surprising considering the injury story.

Dude what game are you watching?????
The Blazers didn’t close out on a shooter once. Many times they allowed a NY player to make a hustle play while they stood around picking their noses.
No, you’re wrong. There was little to no effort last night and I won’t allow you guys to keep making these excuses.

I was watching the same game both you and Jscot were leeroy.....
I also saw some terrible play but lots of effort…I just don’t see after watching this team get built over the last few years how anyone could think these guys are going to tank it.
We have some big ol’ issues but I just don’t see effort as one of them.
RoadBlazer
Nope
NY shoots 50% on two point shots. Last night, they were 19-52 on two point shots, 36.5%. That doesn’t happen if you aren’t putting out defensive effort, unless the team can’t hit the broad side of a barn, which obviously wasn’t the case.
Closing out on shooters? We were closing down on scorers inside. That is always going to leave shooters open, if a team moves the ball, which they did.

Fantastic piece
Everyone needs to read this. This is the kind of thing I love to hear. Yeah, our team is down, but they’re not out.
Its rally time, Rip City!
Go Blazers!!!

Columbus til I die, Columbus til I die. I know I am, I swear I am, Columbus til I die!
Finally...
someone with the same perspective about this team as I have. Do not give up on Greg.
Support these guys and this team during the bad times as well as the “RED-HOT-AN’-ROLLIN’” times. They deserve our respect and support for what they bring to this city and the lives of people who follow them. Nothing but watching a Blazer game can make me jump up with my arms in the air and yell “YEEEEEAAAAAAAHHHH”. I don’t do that because an nba team just scored a basket or blocked a shot, I do that because I know how hard Greg worked to improve to be able to make that dunk and how bad he wants it. I do that because LA wants to be an all-star and every basket, every rebound puts him that much closer to his dream. When they win, I am happy for the individuals and what that win means to them. When they lose or get hurt, I feel for them and the dissapointment they are going through. They are people and I am moved to feel highs and lows because of them, not because my team has a good or bad record. A good record and winning team is what any sport fan wants but it shouldn’t be the only thing.
Well said!
No matter how much our depleted team may struggle, it will be easy to support them all the way. I’d much prefer a team of great guys trying hard and ending up 500% than a championship team of headcases!
Chip kelly was being interviewed before the civil war game and he was asked
if the two teams really hated each other. He replied that “It’s stupid to talk about hate when discussing sporting events”
I loved that. And nit just hate, but the kind of emotions that allow “fans” to talk about their own and other players “garbage” or to assert that a professional athlete, one of the 500 best basketball players on the planet “stinks”. It’s a complete loss of perspective.
I thank the OP for bringing this back home.

I was going to write about this same issue… but you have saved me the time Thanks and REC!

Well said..So nice to hear from a real fan.
Out of all the injuries...
Outlaw’s is the one that hurt us the most, I know when Oden went down that was a big hit, but now we know we really need Outlaw. Even I wanted to get rid of him, but now I just want him to be back in the lineup. Webster is a huge let down, and Rudy needs to quit playing overseas in the offseason, same with Batum. I love our Blazers, but we have the worst luck…
