Serious Question for Serious Times (oh what the heck, make it fun!)
Yes I get that Oden is hurt. Yes I get that he covers up a lot of our weaknesses. But prior to his injury we weren't playing well. We continued that trend tonight. Is this post a reaction to this game? No, it is more a reaction to how we have been playing the whole season. Here is my main question: Why aren't the Blazers as fun to watch this year as they have been over the past three years?
Is it our expectations? Is it the injuries? Is it coaching? Is it integrating new players? Is it a combination of all of the above or something else?
Here is the secondary question if you are up for it: If you were a GM/coach what would you do to right the ship (if you think it needs it)? There are a ton of thoughtful posters out here and I would love to hear your thoughts (and not just bench Blake or start Miller unless of course you think that will fix the problem and then how would it fix the problem).
Might be kind of fun to put yourself in Nate or Kevin's shoes.

If I were a GM I would go without a coach. Just give each guy an alotted amount of time and let the head cheerleader pull them out of the game when the time is up . This is not to say that I think that the coaching staff is crappy, just that I think that everyone is a step slow because they are thinking the game too much. If nothing else it would be entertaining to watch.
My ideas?
This season is obviously not going to end in a championship, so at best we can hope for playoffs. So instead of using your more experienced players to win games I would push and develop those forces that I plan to use for next season. We obviously have Roy and Aldridge for a while, which is in no way a bad place to start from. Both have been solid players, netting around 30 or 40 points together on a decent night. Aldridge has the potential to easily average a double-double, while Roy can put up 20-30 points usually. Personally I think Roy needs to get into a more “assist” oriented mindset, perhaps trying to run a faster offense like Nash or something. I would love to see his assist average come up a bit, and Roy has a good fast paced game, something I see as lacking this year and hurting the Blazers. Oden is kind of an open question. He does have a history of injurys, but his potential is so great that it would be foolish to jump ship already. I would suggest not giving him a real long term contract, or too many plans around him being healthy, but at least wait for him to recover and give next season a go. Bayless and Cunningham have both shown potential game this year, and both are possibly great assets to the team. I would love to see them given more minutes (this season should develop them particularly), because I believe that these rookies have shown more fire and drive than many other players. Bayless can create opportunity’s for himself, with his shot developing and his ability (nay fearlessness) to drive to the rim and get something done (often when no one else is doing anything). Cunningham has shown himself to be an able shot blocker, rebounder, a nice 15’ jumper, as well as providing a fairly big body.
As for a general strategy I think the blazers should emphasis two aspects of the game. Defense and Fast break. We need to up the tempo of the game, to throw the opponents off their balance early in the game, as happened to us during the latest storm of troubles. For this I think it is incredibly important to hold onto Batum and Pryzbilla. Batum will be back and has previously made a quite noticeable difference in the game (especially on defense). Pryzbilla is a very good back up center and worth hanging onto for his rebounding. Rudy is also a quite able role-player, and potentially more than that. I dont quite know what the issues are with his back, and how that will affect his future career, but he is a very good 3 point shooter that causes teams to have to spread out. I think Rudy could develop into more of a ball handler, possibly running more plays and helping run the court and up the tempo with fast break points. He is a bit of a risk taker, but it seems more often than not they seem to be beneficial.
So if I was KP I would be thinking about Webster, Blake, Miller, Outlaw, Mills and Howard. Personally I dont know much about Mills, though I’ve heard good things. Outlaw has always been able to create his own shots and so would be good to hang onto for the second unit. Webster has shown some potential but not enough consistency to get him off the hook entirely. Howard is getting old, and while he has shown some fuel left in his tanks, I would keep my eye out for another large guy, especially if (and i shudder to say this) Oden doesnt work out. Between Blake and Miller I am torn. It seems each night it alternates who does better, though not in a good way. Blakes defense is almost nonexistant, something which hurts the teams ability to man up on other guards. Millers defense isnt a whole lot better. Both of them are able to integrate into the offense but without the results a championship team would need. I would almost suggest dumping both of them and finding someone who is more solid to fill that gap. Bayless can help, and I think Roy should take the reigns of this team as the guy who makes plays (sometimes he just seems like a scorer…), but use their salary to get a replacement with more consistency and good defense.
dang dude --you shouldve made your own post-lol

I think that Miller needs to stay. He can teach Bayless to run the floor. I think
Miler would “show up” much more consistently if he was a starter. Though he says he doesn’t care, and I believe him, he has always started and coming off of the bench may have affected his game. Get rid of Steve Blake. Nice guy but we don’t need him. I don’t know that another team will want him but his contract is expiring and that seems to have some value. I agree, I’d like to see Roy speed it up a bit and with Miller on the floor, I think his game would benefit also. He rec’d a nice lob from Miller during last night’s game. I think the game would be more fun to watch with Miller consistently in the game. As it is, when Miller is playing, 1/2 the time is is in the 2 positon, with Blake as the PG. Also he plays quite a bit with new players who haven’t played much together. So give him a break. He would make a difference in the starting line up.
Also I wish they would get rid of McMillan. I’d like a coach with more fire who actually teaches defense…this can be assistanct coaches as well. McMillan brought his coaching staff along with him. Maybe the Blazers GM should consider hiring an assistant coach who can TEACH defense!!!!
Tom Thibodeau
spare whatever expense is necessary to pry him away from the Celtics
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
