What's Bayless got to do to get some court time?

I mean really  he is playing great everytime he has the ball, scoring about 1 point per min. when he's not ignored by the other players, defense, hustle, attacking the basket, hitting his shots. 17.06 tonight 14 points 2/3 assists 1/2 steals good D,  When will they really give him a look? He was the only bright spot out there tonight if the Blazers want to win some games they need to use effort that Jerryd's forte. Against New York we should of went to the rim, over and over again, thats Bayless.

He's also the only PG doing anything positive and giving real effort

At this point, screw the norm and go with what’s working, visually.

Learn to pass, maybe?

I like how he’s playing too, but christ, the kid needs to give up the rock once in a while. Has there ever been a PG who refused the pass the ball quite like him before? He makes Iverson look like Steve Nash.

Jerryd had a nice lob pass to LMA

Blake played 37 minutes tonight

Miller played 26 (4 TOs)

Bayless played 17 (and scored 14 points)

and Nate was back in Portland…it’s tough to win when you’re outscored 39-3 from behind the arc

Pointing out that he scored a lot in limited minutes

kind of reinforces my point that he’s a gunner.

I’m aware that he has had assists before. He gets so few of them that each one stands out in one’s mind. Out of 66 rotation point guards in the league, he’s 62nd in assist ratio, only ahead of other non-sharers like Boobie Gibson, George HIll, Jennaro Pargo, and Eddie House.

if you expect JB to be an NBA PG, then you're bound to be disappointed

I expect that he will put his head down and attack the basket. With hand-checking rules being what they are, players like Bayless will continue to be valuable

With Rudy out of the lineup, there’s no way that Jerryd is going anywhere but right back on the court to keep attacking the basket. He is what he is and what “he is” isn’t all that bad, at least his jumper is falling this year and that will keep his defenders honest

BTW, if you think Rex is a “gunner” just wait until Patty Mills is healthy…

on a night when we struggle tooth an nail to

put up even 80 points against one of the most porous defenses in the league, benching Bayless was a stupid decision.

Sure, he’s just a scorer; but that’s what we desperately need right now.

by CleBlazer on Dec 7, 2009 10:28 PM PST up reply actions

What we desperately need is to restore chemistry.

Putting your offense in the hands of a shoot first, shoot second, pass third point guard is usually the easiest way to kill team chemistry.

by howlingfantods on Dec 8, 2009 1:47 AM PST up reply actions

And just to be clear

I like Bayless. He’s the only PG I want to keep. But I also want him to keep improving, and what he desperately needs to improve is learning to distribute the ball.

by howlingfantods on Dec 8, 2009 1:48 AM PST up reply actions

It doesn't matter how well Bayless passes the ball

He still gets tagged a me first, selfish guy. It’s a joke.

Bayless has been playing smart ball and passing when he needs to. All these expectations of him having to be some mystical pure point guard need to stop. He’s playing well right now and seems to be learning, he just needs his opportunity to play and too make a few mistakes along the way.

That oop to LMA last night was nice. Drew the defense, made the right read and delivered a perfect pass.

He hasn't even played

How can a stat, with such a small sample size, be flaunted with certainty? How can anybody be so certain about what he is or isn’t, without letting the kid get his chance like every other talented player that comes into the A?

You don’t think he’s been playing well lately? I don’t mean using your awesome statistical analysis, what have you seen watching the games? Ball hoggery and suckitude?

maybe because he had virtually the same assist ratio last year

with a larger sample size?

Read what I wrote. I like that he’s playing better than last year, but he needs to stop being such a gunner to get significant playing time as a PG on our squad.

by howlingfantods on Dec 9, 2009 11:57 PM PST up reply actions

He had 4 points scored from assists before he scored a 3 point play on his first shot attempt an add 1

plus most of his min’s. played Andre had the ball in his hands for no assists or points. Not saying Andre can not play better than he did last night but the team would of been much better without him on the floor last night. Besides every time he had the ball he was creating for himself or others. Except when he tried to split a double team and his dribble went away from him maybe hit a foot.

pass first?

if you’re bayless, playing 3-12 minutes a game typically, are you saying you want him to look to pass first. I don’t understand people that say he’s a selfish player…he’s just trying to play as aggressive as possible in the limited roll provided by nate. I for one think if they play him 20-25 minutes a game you’d see him averaging b/t 4-6 assists/game. couldn’t agree more with giving him as much court time as possible going forward

by crookie monster on Dec 7, 2009 9:14 PM PST reply actions

at Vegas Nate was asked about Bayless' role

and he said that they would have to put Jerryd into situations where he can succeed, and that means attacking the basket. Sure it looks bad, it’s not team ball but it’s not that much different from what Terry Porter did for the 89-92 Blazers when they needed a score late in a big game. TP would put his head down and drive the ball into the paint and sacrifice his body to get to the FT line (and usually knock down 2) With the hand-checking rules now being so tight, Rex can make a career out of this “selfish” style of penetrating into the paint and looking for the hoop and the harm. Nate knows it, and I think the time to “convert” Bayless into a passing PG is in the past. Playing alongside Roy, Rudy, Blake or Miller, he doesn’t have to make “decisions” for others. Just go hard

by two4larue on Dec 7, 2009 9:37 PM PST up reply actions

he had 2 assist before he even tried to score last night, also when he was in in the second quarter he was +5 in like 2 min.'s

before he was taken out buy Blake being taken out and replaced by Miller who did not let Bayles touch the ball except where he got it on his D fense where they went -13 for the rest of his first half play, Also he was in durring the 12-0 run by Portland in the 4th which got the game back to under 10 then removed where the rest of the team could not get any closer.

by prof.mike on Dec 8, 2009 12:05 PM PST up reply actions

It's getting harder to ignore

his scoring. Maybe it’s time to forget about chemistry for a few games and focus on productivity. You know, putting the hot players on the court. That includes Bayless’ 14 ppg. Don’t you imagine his scoring will skyrocket if he gets 25-30 minutes? Steve and Andre can sit for a few games short-term in exchange for some quickness, defense and scoring. No way Andre’s old legs can keep up the pace of this league every night Steve can’t fight through a pick. Opponents aren’t eager to set picks on Bayless. Watch carefully and you’ll see them sag off Bayless. He’s built to run over other players.

by oregonslee on Dec 7, 2009 9:26 PM PST reply actions

Sarunas Marciulionis, Corey Maggette, etc

Bayless might be a Don Nelson kind of penetrator, someone who takes the ball hard into the paint, initiates contact and gets to the FT line. If Rudy ever gets his back right again, I wonder if Nelson would be interested in a trade for Jerryd?

Probably not, seeing he already has Maggette and Monta Ellis. But down the road I could see Rex possibly playing for the Warriors, assuming Nellie remains as their head coach

A one trick pony

who does the trick successfully is looking really good right now. It’s all short term anyway. Did you see Pritchard state categorically that Bayless “never” asked for a trade? I still think Millsap was the right guy but we tried to get him on the cheap with all that back loaded hocus pocus. I say he was the guy for us because I believe in my bones our only chance at being a perennial contender is the Spur’s/Piston’s model of hard nosed defense and constant ball movement on offense; you know, it’s called great passing.

by oregonslee on Dec 8, 2009 5:34 PM PST up reply actions

Did you see Pritchard state categorically that Bayless "never" asked for a trade?

Good for Jerryd, he certainly has had every reason to make a stink about his PT and all he done is keep his head up and work harder. (There might be a future Portland team leader hidden right there in plain view.) I’ve compared Bayless to Terry Porter in the past and perhaps he’ll still have an impact playing alongside Roy down the road,…but the transition to that potential starting backcourt has been as slow as molasses, because of the coaching staff and the team’s playoff aspirations

Millsap’s “toxic” offer was actually front-loaded, the Blazers were hoping that the Jazz’ ownership wouldn’t want to exceed the luxury tax threshold by keeping both Boozer and Millsap. As it turns out, Utah called KP’s bluff. My hope is for a physical PF to be added, someone who can be a contrast to LMA. DeJuan Blair was the “one that got away” moreso than Millsap

the Spur’s/Piston’s model of hard nosed defense and constant ball movement on offense; you know, it’s called great passing

There’s a chance of that but only with Oden as the trigger man, and perhaps a healthy Rudy. I don’t have high hopes for Nate, Brandon or LMA (out of the blue) developing a motion offense, featuring passing and cutting that leads to easy baskets. Pick and pop and ISOs will be the hoop “du jour” until there’s a change in offensive coaching philosophy

It's becoming pretty damn obvious

that J Bay needs to play more. I found myself getting pissed at the TV tonight due to our lack of firepower offensively . Blake hit a few shots in the 1st Q but cannot run a fast break if his life depended on it. Andre looked to be in a funk all night, and his body language was terrible. What a change from the game before! Bayless? 100% intensity, like always. Instant offense. Gives the Blazers a 3rd option when playing with LMA and BRoy, which is very important in the NBA. Right now Blake and Webster are bringing very little. Let’s reward energy and give Rex some run.

by DCBlazerinPDX on Dec 7, 2009 10:29 PM PST reply actions

As I suggested time and time again, only way Bayless sees PT is if he attacks and eats Blake.

Or Nate, but coach didn’t make the trip this time around…perhaps injury is just a ruse and he didn’t wanted to face a raging B-Rex attack.

Seriously though, outside of Blake trade/injury, just don’t see it happening this year. I know it’s irrational, but human beings are irrational and the current regime will give Blake every chance in the world, even if they are undeserved.

by xedubx on Dec 8, 2009 1:49 AM PST reply actions

I'm when people say it's because he's not a real PG.

People need to make up their mind. Some prefer Blake playing with Roy because he can play off the ball and shoot when needed. At the same time people really wanted a real PG for this team. We got one and people complain he and Roy can’t play together (despite him being so much better than Blake). However the reason Bayless shouldn’t play is because he’s not a real PG and looks to score?

I’d rather get the ball to Jerryd and have him look to attack the basket than have Blake brick a wide open 3.

best 5

Sorry Steve Blake, your a good guy and a steady player but you can’t penetrate or create your own shot. Defensively you are average. You are not one of the best 5 players on the team. You should be a spot player in special situations ala Steve Kerr. Miller, Roy and Bayless should be the primary guards playing. Both Miller and Bayless are twice the offensive player Blake is and though neither are great defensive players I haven’t seen Blake shut anybody down lately either.
