Getting Bigger
Hey all. that was probably the worst i have felt (and continue to feel) since that 2000 nightmare. but the real thing here is that Greg heal safely and return to our squad as quickly as possible. That being said, we are at a serious crossroads right now. Can and will Greg ever be fully dependable as our franchise center piece? i am not too sure and after seeing what has happened to this poor guy so far I am beginning to have my doubts. I have been one of the completely sold fans on Greg Oden's future, i am constantly defending him and believing in his ability and potential. But as we sit right now we need to make backup plans. We have to assume that Greg will be in and out of our lineups for years to come. We need to start thinking about getting reinforcements ASAP. But who and at what price?
A couple friends and i were sitting around Saturday night after getting home from the game (drinking, commiserating, drowning sorrows) and we were trying to think about who we could get to salvage our hopes and dreams. and really we couldnt come up with a realistic senario for any big in the game right now. Not one that would certainly improve our starting lineup without giving up major pieces and even then who would part with a player like that? the only thing we can do is try to rebuild through the draft. We are going to have to resign Joel and greatly overpay for his services now. and we are also going to have to start drafting bigs. our guards are set we have backups for our backups with oodles of potential between Bayless, Mills and Rudy so we really need to get some legit height. That is really the only way we can inprove on what we have without giving up a combination of Rudy, Bayless, Travis, Joel, Martell, even LA.
We came to the realization that what Greg gives us in the future will all be extra. we cant really expect him to consistently lead us to greatness. We are going to need to go another way, just for our sanity. I mean its not as though Greg hit his knee on a player, the floor, a hard inanimate object, etc. He exploded his knee cap by jumping. This is the most worrisome part of what happened to the big fella. We may not be thinking these horrible thoughts had someone pulled a Tonya Harding on him, but my friends, this is a very 'self-inflicted' injury and it makes me sick in my stomach.
I would like to hear some of your ideas on this. Real ideas. not bashing me for being unpatriotic. These are real concerns that we need to discuss. I am in no way saying that Greg is done done. I am just saying that he is becoming less reliable, and for us to have all of our championship eggs in his basket is more than likely a losing proposition at this point. I love Greg and he is my favorite player, but at what point do we say something needs to be done? People were out of line last year talking about his injuries and his problems, but now I think we need to seriously consider some alternatives. If anyone has some thoughts on good prospects to watch for that would be good, I really dont know what i expect with this post, but this is just something that i have had on my chest and needed to get it out there.
Good luck Big Greg! I hope you have a solid future as a Blazer, i will root for you always!

I'd make a trade to the bulls
Miller, Blake and Outlaw (the rights to Victor Claver) plus $3 million dollars cash for Hinrich, Tyrus Thomas. The salaries are nearly a match. The Bulls get an extra $7.6 million in expiring contracts, plus Claver, plus Miller comes of the books a year earlier than Hinrich at around $2million cheaper and they can use the $3 million to assist in buying out Blake’s $4 million dollar contract. (no sure how much is guaranteed)
The Blazers get one of the better defensive point guards in the league who can shoot and Tyrus Thomas. Nate and Roy said they wanted bring in a beast at the 4 position. I think Tyrus qualifies.
Is bringing in Tyrus a risky move? Definitely. But so what. To get ahead in life you have to risks and chances. You have to roll the dice. I’m a positive thinker and I think Tyrus will be an awesome aquisition. He’s long, athletic and, best of all, a game changer. I’m confident he’ll be a fantastic player for the Blazers.
I do like Outlaw. But his numbers this season are crap, end of story, especially with his shooting %
If you were an NBA general manager, who would you rather have on your team? Tyrus or Outlaw? For me, it’s Tyrus. I hope we get him and Hinrich.
Go Blazers

I would do this trade,
especially since the Bulls will likely let Tyrus Thomas walk for nothing next summer if he is not traded.

we are also going to have to start drafting bigs
Don’t forget that Ben revealed during last week’s wingcast that he got a peek at Portland’s upcoming draft board and something like half of the players they’re targeting were power forwards
and that was before Greg was hurt
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
True but,
I believe the majority of this draft is power forwards already
Portland could coast along with their superior talent and stay right with us. Now that Portland woke up, the hammer cometh down.

Then someone messed up cause
All we ended up with was 2 PFs that can’t rebound or play Center. Way to go KP.
Ben was talking about next year's draft (2010)
If the Blazer scouts are still looking at PFs, how much do they like the 2009 choices?
You can never have “too many” bigs, but on a contending team I’d prefer they not all be rookies and/or second year players

Pretty simple, really
Bring Joel Freeland over next summer, and we’ve got the best C/PF four man rotation in the league. If one guy goes down, we still have a decent rotation.

interesting thought on Freeland. i have thought about that too. It just seems to me that if he really could make an impact on our team he should be here by now, no? maybe we just needed the roster space and now we have a big enough hole to fill Joel in. Not a bad plan. the problem with Freeland and T. Thomas is that neither really answer our C dilemma. Yeah Freeland is about 6’11 and Thomas what 6’10? but we would have to basically rely on LA to play close to 40 minutes a game start at PF and move to C when Zilla comes out. Which might just be what he has to do to reach that next level…its not an easy fix thats for sure
Freeland can play center or PF
Why hasn’t he come over? Because he wasn’t good enough until a year ago, and now he’s too good to come for the rookie salary for a #30 pick. They wanted him to come over this summer, but it didn’t make sense.
This summer, the three year wait on rookie pay scale is over and we can pay him more.
Oden is expected to make a full recovery. So you would go into the season with four guys at 6’11" or bigger, who can all play C in a pinch, and two are PFs. Even if one goes down, you still have three big men. No one else in the league has four solid players of that size.
