Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

I can not understand some people, and by some people I mean people like Charley Rosen. Can he really believe the crap he is putting on paper? I expect it from other fans, the "I told you so" comments, the "he is another sam bowie" comments. But to say Greg is done as a player and the Blazers shouldn't even resign him after his rookie deal is done? Really?

Did he write this piece about Andrew Bynum last year when he hurt his knee cap and had to sit out the second half of the season for the 2nd straight year? Did he howl at the moon when the Laker's resigned him?

What is really sad is that Rosen is not the only guy out there saying this, Sherman Alexie said on truehoop that Oden is, "likely done as an everyday player for good". Have these guys not seen Bynum playing today? How about big Z in Cleveland setting the franchise record for games played? Have they forgotten that he couldn't stay on the court for his first couple of seasons?

I guess what makes me so upset at Charley Rosen is that what he rights has the power to influence the masses. Eventhough I know he must have been brain dead when he wrote that, a casual fan does not. They just see a story on Fox about how Greg is done. And maybe it is because so many of my friends are just casual fans, because I have already had to help bring some friends back from the edge.

"Portland must now embark on yet another rebuilding program."

Guess it’s time to trade Brandon Roy, Aldridge, Rudy, Nic, etc. Darn.

Dictated, not read. The management.

build around bayles

but in all seriousness, Rosen is an idiot. And I thank him for writing this, because he is always wrong

bayless leaves over my dead body

Bynum had a torn MCL in January, not a dislocated kneecap. The dislocation was the first injury...

Thanks for the correction

I was working off memory, guess I had his injuries mixed up. But the point still is the same, Rosen is ,(words that i would have to ban myself over).

Eh I can't find much in there to be upset about

I do think the Blazers will resign Greg, albeit at a bargain price.

As for the Blazers being worse off than three years ago, that’s a really idiotic take. Once the team is healthy, even minus Greg, it’s still the fourth or fifth best roster out West.

It feels like it exploded.

The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of Greg Oden.

by fajunga on Dec 7, 2009 2:28 PM PST up reply actions

Greg's fractured

into two pieces by all accounts. Yes Greg’s is a worse injury, but that is not the point. The point is both big men had consecutive seasons where they missed alot of time. Bynum is not the only comparison either, Big Z may be an even better comparison.

My point by bringing up the two other players was that this injury does not mean Greg is washed up as an NBA player, the kid is 21 years old and has had some bad luck with injuries. They are concerning, but they are not a predicter of the future for more injuries.

by usmcr3049 on Dec 7, 2009 11:32 AM PST up reply actions

Rosen won’t write anything too bad about Bynum because he’s very good friends with PJ and tends to focus his Bynum pieces more on what exactly he needs to do to improve.

The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of Greg Oden.

Maybe Greg’s bones are made of TNT. Which, while totally awesome, could be a little concerning. I can’t remember reading whether or not the MRI assessed his bones for combustibility. The doc probably knows but he’s restricted by HIPAA. KP doesn’t care about HIPAA so I’m sure he’ll tell us.

Pick your own adjetive or whatever helps you sleep, I chose exploded after looking at this picture ...

http://media.oregonlive.com/behindblazersbeat/photo/greg-odenjpg-b860a6ea32e477ae.jpg

I’m all for optimism, but I also understand that at this point, this is a devastating situation. Google the injury, visit some message board support communities dedicated to it and read testimonials of people who are dealing with it — it’s a horrible horrible injury. Look what it did to Antionio McDyess’ career, take into account how much work (physically and mentally) it took Greg to get to where he was just last week and the fact that he is faced with that all over again … this is just worst case scenario.

But, No, I’m not writing Greg off and never will until I’m forced to. Same time, I’m going to be realistic about this and not get upset at articles, writers, and doubters — at this point there is nothing we, as Blazers fans, can say anymore, all we can do is hope and take every thing he gives us from here on out as gravy.

That’s my outlook, I realize not everyone will share it.

I get that we as fans are shocked and frustrated over this

but the injury really is not the end of Greg’s career. He will be back at 100% next year in training camp, with a little luck he will be able to go full speed in summer drills, but at the very least he will still be able to spend another summer with Bayno and work on his game. This is not a career ending injury, he is simply a long recovery time. The bone broke into 2 pieces, which is pretty darn clear in that picture you posted, it was screwed back together with 2 screws, which will let the bone heal over the next few months. Then Greg can start the rehab and get his bball career back on track.

There would be much less doom and gloom over this if this was his first injury of any kind, which is basically how this should be viewed, because this injury is in no way related to his Micro injury.

I understand the fear and frustration amoung Blazer fans, I feel the same things, but they are irrational fears. I have been through a long rehab, (shattered both lower bones in my right leg while on a dirt bike) I know how it sucks to lay on your back for months not being able to do the things you are use to. But you refocus yourself when you are in that position, because there is no use looking back and wishing things didn’t happen to you. So you decide that you are going to approach each day and get your life back, until the day comes where you can do the things you love, like play for the Blazers. Greg will be back, and he will be 100%, and he will make Blazer fans pround.

Total silliness

If Greg comes back next year, he’s going to be untradeable because of his contract? Does this lunatic even know what Greg’s contract is?

If Oden is healthy and playing in preseason next year, at least 20 teams would gladly trade for him. A guy who can average a double double and lead the league in blocked shots? Maybe no one wants to give him a max, but on a rookie contract?

he ignored the BLK intentionally to back up his point

He mentioned 11.7 PTS and 8.8 REB, good. But then he went on to deride his low AST/high TO and low FGM/high Fouls while ignoring perhaps Oden’s most impressive stats – Blocks.

You need to change the title to your blog!!! I thought when I opened it that

this was YOUR stance. Many won’t read it unless they want to STRONGLY disagree with your title..as I did. Or they think what you say in your title is true!!!

Rosen makes good observations about individual players and has a very old school knowledge of the game. He is a complete Elitist though. That annoys me.

As mentioned here on BE before

Rosen is the head tool, GIGO man: garbage in garbage out. Just best to ignore him and pretend he doesn’t exist.
