Greg's knee: Potential cause ...

Posting this as a fanpost because I didn't want it to get lost in the game day injury thread. About.com has some interesting info on fractured patellas. Here is the money quote:

"Patella fractures can also occur when the quadriceps muscle is contracting but the knee joint is straightening (a so-called 'eccentric contraction'). When the muscle pulls in this manner, the patella can fracture."

Contracting quad, straightening joint sure sounds like what Greg was doing at the time while simultaneaously coming to a stop and preparing to go up in the lane. If the fracture is severe enough surgery may require the placement of metal rods in the knee, which would then require an additional procedure a year out to remove the rods. Recovery can still be lengthy even if surgery is not required.

who cares about basketball

lets just hope Greg can lead a normal life. I am not trying to be funny. But, the man was simply not meant to play basketball at NBA speed. I wish him all the best in recovery, and hopefully he will not have any long-term problems walking. Imagine being 21 and having to worry about your mobility?

As for the basketball part of it, the decision to draft Oden over Durant made as little sense two years ago as it does now.

Oden did not ask to be anointed the next great center, but he was, and the Blazers have to live with the consequences of their mistake. But it is not Greg’s fault.

Best of luck Greg.

I agree he was not ment to play this game

Its been 42 games since his last injury so he was due. There is nothing anybody can do he has played very limited minutes in the time he has played only going over 30 minutes 11 times in his brief career. So limiting playing time does not apear to help. For some reason his body can not handle it, but I am sure he will try again.

Ridiculous...

The Blazers had (and still have) plenty of scoring on the wing. The Blazers were a top five offense last year. KD is a scorer, and that’s it. He can’t play D.

Oden could not have been a more obvious choice, and the argument that KD should have been chosen instead makes as little sense now as it did two years ago. Perimeter scoring is among the most common and overrated commodoties in the league; interior defense and rebounding are among the rarest and most underrated. The Blazers not only made the same call every other GM would have made, but their basketball case for making that decision was among the most obvious in the league.

Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.

Remember he broke his patella last season

but that was a “chip fracture”. It makes you wonder. It was the same knee too.

The pictures show that he dislocated his patella.

The fracture is most likely an impaction fracture of the patella on the lateral femoral condyle, unless the dislocation caused the medial portion of the patella to shear-off. The surgery will likely be done to repair his medial patellofemoral ligament and/or open reduction internal fixation of any boney fragments.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
