Junk Drawer 12/5/09 - Da Night Bafo Christmas
Everyone must be scared to make a FanPost, so I had to step up and make today's Junk Drawer. I came to the conclusion well over a year ago that I jumped the shark on Blazers Edge. Now that I really hate Miller, everyone thinks I'm joking. It is lame to the extreme.
I got the poem that is after the jump in my e-mail yesterday.
“Da Night Bafo Christmas”
Was da night bafo’ Christmas, and all ova’ da place,
Not even da geckos was showin’ their face.
Da stockings was hangin’ on top da TV
(‘Cause no mo’ fireplace in Hawai’i)
Da kids stay all crashed, my old man too.
They leave all da work for you-know-who.
So me, I stay pickin’ up alla dea toys,
When – boom! – outside get only big noise!
I run to da window, I open ’em up,
I stick out my head and I yell, “Eh! Whassup?!”
And then, I no can ba-lieve what I seen!
Was so unreal, you know what I mean?
This fat haole guy get his reindeers in my yard!
And reindeers not housebroken, you know, as’ why hard!
But nemmind, this Christmas, so I cut ‘em some slack.
Plus, had uku pile presents pokin’ outta his sack!
So I wait ’till he pau tie up his reindeer,
Then I yell out da window, “Huui! Brah, ova hea!”
An’ I tell ’em first thing, when I open da door,
“Eh, Hemo your shoes! You going dirty my floor!”
He take off his boots, he tell, “You know who I am?”
I go, “Ho! From the smell, must be Mr. Toe Jam!”
He make mempachi eyes and he go, “Ho, ho, ho!”
By now, I stay thinking this guy kinda slow!
He look like my Tutu, but little less weight,
And his beard stay so white, mo’ white than shark bait!
He stay all in red, specially his nose,
And get reindeer spit on top his nice clothes!
But him, he no care; he just smile at me,
And he start fo’ put presents unda-neath da tree.
I tell ‘em, "Eh, brah, no need make li’dat,
And watch where you step! You going ma-ke da cat!"
Then, out from his bag, he pull one brand new computah,
Choke video games, and one motorized scootah!
He try for fill up da Christmas socks too,
But had so much pukas, all da stuff went fall troo.
When he pau, I tell ’em, “Eh Santa, try wait!
I get plenty leftovahs, I go make you one plate!”
But he nevah like hang, he had so much fo’ do;
Gotta make all them small kids’ wishes come true.
So I wave ’em goodbye, and I flash ’em da shaka,
And I tell ’em, “Mele Kalikimaka!”
When he hear that, he stop…and I telling you true,
He go, “Garans ball-barans! Merry Christmas to you!”

Do you hate Miller or hate Bedgers that love Miller?
Ohio State > University of Oregon State University
I hate Miller on the Blazers
I almost made my poll: Is Miller a veteran black Sergio?
Start Andre Miller NOW to showcase him for a trade.
I can't pinpoint if Miller is super shy or just a Richard and doesn't
care about anything but himself…I say this because of his “it’s the economy” statement in his press release signing.
Just seems odd when I look back.
But then again, both him and Nate need to grow up.
Ohio State > University of Oregon State University
I find it somewhat disturbing what Nate said in his latest interview with Smith. Didn’t sound at all like what he and especially KP said after signing Miller about how great he knew the team and what he all wanted and could do to help them.
Ceterum censeo Lakers esse delendam
There's an ongoing argument in the "was signing Miller a mistake" thread
About whether you can assume the things Miller and Nate talked about in the meeting.
Some of the longest posts back-to-back I’ve seen in a while…
Me too. That was very alarming. Nate has never been one to openly
discuss his interactions with a player. Obviously, there is a failure of communication somewhere, we just will never know the details of it.
Miller’s solution is heads down and play ball.
Nate’s solution is lets see if Miller will talk about it.
Dead end.
Ohio State > University of Oregon State University
Yeah, I think I have never read about something like that. There was Quick’s article about how the situation at home with Nate, Roy, Greg, LaMarcus played out. And a few remarks about how he bridged the communication gap with Rudy and Nic, which seems to work quite well. With Sergio not so well. With Jerryd. But never in such detail with direct quotes from Nate himself. Not even in the times when he had to be Sarge and put players in their place.
Ceterum censeo Lakers esse delendam
miller is extremely reserved and to himself
""..Sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own . . . "
He loves Blake, but hates people who hate other players so their favorite player can play more
Hating Miller so Blake can be the clear starter again, now he is trapped in a vicious cycle of love and hate.
Ceterum censeo Lakers esse delendam
That's pretty much true and how the hate started

Ohio State > University of Oregon State University
Yeah...I think so
and I want one of them too….what number you gonna go for? #7?

i have two #7
so if they have a Nic, i’ll go for 88 but a 52 throwback would be pretty sick

it looks like they only
have throwbacks for Roy, Rudy, and LA.
which sucks. I wanted 52 also.

there’s a tiny xmas farm down our street we go to every year, and the first weekend of December never has anyone show up…the 2nd week is when it’s packed
Ohio State > University of Oregon State University
Nice...when I live in Medford we had a tree farm about a 1/2 mile away
that we would go to…it was nice …you would go in and they would give you a ribbon …you then would walk thru there field and pick out the tree …wrap the ribbon around it and within a couple of mins a guy on a 4 wheller would come by with a chain saw and cop it down for you and carry it back to your car ….all for $20 (10 years ago) …it was nice
" Welcome to the Bedge....where good, is never good enough"…Rudiculous
hahaha, this guy only charges $20 for a noble
and $10 for a douglas fir. he hasn’t raised his prices in 5 years.
and you can get any size. you can get a 20 feet noble for the same price as a 2 feet noble.

I just don’t like when they say “So and so made a stat and it tells us this,” then people just accept it as truth. I imagine a lot of stat people must be pretty religious due to all the faith involved.

Blazers rookie forward Dante Cunningham wore protective eye goggles during the shootaround. Cunningham received 11 stitches — eight outside; three (dissolvable) inside — after colliding with another player during Friday’s practice

This sucks
On McMillan playing with the team and the irony of his injury:
I just feel so bad for him. What he did yesterday was to help his team. He did whatever was necessary to help his team yesterday. And, frankly, he and (assistant coach) Monty (Williams) were the best defenders on the floor. So, I’ve always had enormous respect for him and it just grows.
Start Andre Miller NOW to showcase him for a trade.
Is it bad when the 2 coaches are your best defenders?

i think this is all KPs fault
I think the only logical answer is that KP and his mad scientists determined that they needed to insert an element in the that will entirely disrupt the team and entirely blow the year off. They tried desperately to make a horrible free agency signing and Miller was just the one that worked out. Then, they made the resignings of the supposed faces of the franchise far more difficult than seemed reasonable by anyone. Didn’t use their 15th roster spot effectively. Sat on their hands not trying for pieces that may have made sense for pieces that made less sense.
KP figured out that this year needed to be spent pressing the team into hard times so that they realize, as a team, what it takes to overcome adversity.. during a season and from a bad season into a contending season.
"oh dear god. Please be more irresponsible". - Claire
I'd like to see Miller starting with Roy, a SF if anyone's choosing, LMA, and Oden
Before it is a “bad signing”.
It’s annoying me that we haven’t tried it, and that we’re writing it off already without trying it.
This isn’t directed at you, Idletimey!
I'LL CRUSH YOU!
Yeah, no, how insane would it be to play the best player at each position in the starting lineup for a couple of games to see how that works out? I mean, just for a stretch. It isn’t always the best way, but if every other lineup isn’t quite clicking maybe it is time to give it a shot.

i sort of see this as, let’s put someone who can score 20 points at each position, and make the other team stop on of them. instead of playing, so our second unit can match up and beat any given second unit. let’s just make our first unit, the unit, and let the other team take it how they want it, ie, take it how we give it.
by EvilKaramazov on Dec 5, 2009 12:04 PM PST up reply actions
The thing is
We’re always (or SHOULD always) have one of Roy, LMA, or Oden on the floor at all times. Then just fit whatever bench dudes around them. The bench unit as a whole doesn’t have to be strong, it’s always gonna be about the starters and the stars.
agreed. i think miller, roy, rudy, lma, and oden is the line up with the most fire power. i say we blow the other teams out of the water, or at least try.

I doubt it’s Nate being stubborn, it just has to be Miller.

Good satire, with the kernel of truth that makes it effective
KP has done a good job overall, but he seems to be the one member of the organization who’s getting a free pass. Timmay, I’ve got some sympathy for how you felt last year when you criticized Nate and got shouted down by the masses – every time I say something negative about KP (not obtaining a backup 4 who is a viable starter if LMA goes down; attempting to wildly overpay for Hedo; signing Miller without being 100% on the same page with Nate, Dre, and Roy as to how this would go down; not using RLEC; etc.) I get the business. KP is good, but he is not without fault in the early season struggles.

Kill? Oh hahahahahaha you're funny, nobody said anything about killing
Some say a life in constant agony is worse then death, if you get what I’m scratching at.
I am happy you made such a wise purchase.
Alright, storage arrived on time, and just got done moving all non-heavy stuff out.
The unloaders should be here any minute, and we’re in bizznass!
This move has been 1 gabillion times easier than last time.
No one was there to boss you around
" Welcome to the Bedge....where good, is never good enough"…Rudiculous
It was raining harder than it ever rained in all my years in LA, last time
And the way my apartment was before, I was on the first floor, but you had to walk up two sets of stairs to get there, and I couldn’t hire movers like this time, and it was a bad time to be moving.
This time, my apartment is upstairs but only one short flight, I am right next to the street (for better or worse, but the street noise never bugged me no ever no way no huh), and I was able to hire some dudes for cheap. I coulda’ hired someone last time, but thought it’d cost more… and I was in a hurry.
Worst move ever, last time! Now I got all my stuff inside, I got a crapload of arranging to do, a bookshelf broke in the storage container and I’m gonna see if I can salvage it, some friends are arriving with a couch soon, and I got the rest of the weekend to sort it out. This move was really easy.
This place would be on defcon 5
I honestly thought the whole thing was an indication KP and Nate weren’t all that sold on Nic – why else would you sign a SF for 5 years at that money?

PA may have fell in love during the playoffs
I think Hedo is not as good as Miller but may have been a better initial fit, since he is a secondary playmaker BUT can shoot, and has good experience playing with a dominant big.
Aside from talking with him and passing to him in the post, we haven’t seen Miller open up Oden’s game.

Because Walsh didn't put any effort into the draft, didn't communicate effectively with his scouts (who had been hired by Isiah - who was a good drafter), and didn't realize Hill is a dud
He also made lame excuses why they didn’t take Jennings/Lawson AND Blair (both would have been possible). Basically after Rubio, Flynn and Curry were gone the Knicks draft board was gone too. And since all other GMs passed on those guys, why shouldn’t he? That’s really not a reason though, just an excuse. I assume he is also the top candidate for the GM quoted anonymously by ESPN as flying to Europe for the pre-draft camp and then disappointed that Jennings cancelled because he claimed there wasn’t enough 5 on 5 material on him. Instead of firing up Synergy and watching all video he could get of Jennings, he pouted.

Roy, this morning @ shootaround:
Blazers guard Brandon Roy on the lineup: “I’d rather just stay at the 2, whether it was Steve (Blake) or Andre (Miller). It wasn’t that I was, ‘Put Dre in the second unit.’ I wanted to be in the 2-guard spot. So, we’ll see. He hasn’t said he’s going to make a change, so I’m not going to think ahead. We’ve got the same starting lineup tonight, and we’ve got to do a better job of executing and playing much better defense. When we do that, then we can kind of see where we’re at that. But until we do that, we can’t expect lineup changes to help us out.”
http://columbian.com/article/20091205/BLOGS05/912059998/-1/blazerbanter
Oh, and:
Portland Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan said he expects to use the same starting lineup and rotation tonight against the Houston Rockets at the Rose Garden.
“I think about it all the time,” McMillan said. “We’re going with our group. LaMarcus (Aldridge) hasn’t been there. And I still want to look at this team. I think the rotation we have is a good rotation. And right now, the lineup I don’t think is it. I think we need to just play. To change right now, I’m not ready to do it.”
Brandon Roy selfishly wants to play his position
he should take one for the team and back up Oden… if he was a real superstar he could do it
the question is
Why is Nate still vehemently against trying the most obvious, most conventional, Miller-Roy-Webster lineup?
because there is only one ball on the floor at a time, and both Roy and Miller need it in their hands to be effective
both Roy and Miller need it in their hands to be effective
this is a big assumption. Roy is good at coming off of screens and Miller has coexisted with Iguodala and Melo.
i cry for nic
Miller has coexisted with Iguodala and Melo.
which explains why he’s been on so many winning teams… oh wait, Andre Miller has NEVER been on a team that has won 50 games
i'm just saying chauncey bounced around crappy teams
before settling in to one that he can comfortably lead…you can also say Miller took what he had and they went beyond what was expected…i.e. Philly his years versus this year
so pinpointing that Miler is the reason a team cant’ get to 50 is misleading
Ohio State > University of Oregon State University
Chauncey’s actual skills and production have become really overrated. Not to mention the fact that he is declining and has actually performed quite poorly in conference finals and nba finals.
i cry for nic
call me when Chauncey deserves one. He actually wasn’t that good in the playoffs the year they won, their defense was MVP.
i cry for nic
chauncey is smmoooooooov tho...
got that special chauncey swag
""..Sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own . . . "
maybe thats why he got the prize
""..Sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own . . . "
I thought Ben Wallace should have got it...
They won with defense, and he was the anchor. Chauncey was their best offensive player though, its not like anybody else really deserved it, and they got to give it to someone…
RUDY > MJ
i didn't say that
i’m saying you can’t blame a player like Andre for where he’s been in the win/losses in his career
circumstances of success is hard work, environment, and of course luck
so when Andre wins one with us, everyone will have a different perspective just like KG
Ohio State > University of Oregon State University
because Melo played no defense and was an inefficient scorer who didn’t pass early in his career?
i cry for nic
all I know is they were garbage one year and division winners when he showed up
oh yeah, and Detroit made 6 ECF with him and bombed the year he left.
I’m not saying he’s God in human flesh, but he does know how to run a team and it seems he makes players around him at least moderately better, whereas I haven’t seen that from Andre during the course of his career.
what????
Philly disagrees with you
that Detroit team coached by Larry Brown was more than just Chauncy…
but yeah, i’m a Chauncy homer too but not gonna knock Andre for it
Ohio State > University of Oregon State University
I'm not hating on Andre or anything, I'm just saying there are certain point guards who can roll into a city and instantly make that team better
Namely, Nash and Billups, who have done it in multiple cities.
Andre doesn’t have the personality, the leadership, the veteran swagger that those two have.
I’m not saying he can’t play, because he can. He just doesn’t have that…BAM! I-can-lead-this-team-and-make-everyone-better-ness about him.
you can't lead if you are not accepted
or wanted to lead…
so that says more about Nate and BRoy than anything.
they gave more leadership rah rah to Juwan than they did to Dre…
Dre was, he needs to earn it…oh, he played well in the preseason? well then, it’s because he’s a better fit for the 2nd unit.
Chauncey had RIP/Prince/Wallace
then when he came to Denver, Karl gave him the reigns…
So again, different circumstances
Ohio State > University of Oregon State University
Bingo, Dre needs to earn it
and he hasn’t. Not before he got here, not since he got here. He should be deferring to B.Roy and doing whatever the heck the coaching staff tells him to do and letting his game earn him leadership. Instead he rolls in here crying about wanting to start.
He should be willing to do whatever it takes for the team to succeed, and then work his hardest at it. Respect and leadership recognition comes when you do that.
The deal is that Andre is about Andre. Unless you have Kobe-esque talent, that kind of attitude doesn’t get you leadership and respect.
you bring in a free agent pg pay him near double your other guards...
he’s been starting for years, has led the league in assists..
it follows that you respect him and he’s gonna get to do what he’s done to get to the level he has (however that is guaged)..
why he was chosen and blake and jerryd are still here…very – - odd – - like something else was sposed to happen too

really?
""..Sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own . . . "
i don't see it that way
Nate was wishy washy…What happen to “competition” and earning it…If that was the case, based on what my eyes were seeing, and the stats, Andre did earn it
If i was him, i be pissed too that our coach said one thing and decided another…and obviously, they had different interpretations of what they talked about before he signed…
If KP/Nate were true, they make sure Dre knew exactly what he was coming into.
He’s earned a little more respect than how they’ve handled him.
Players respect Dre, and after this debacle, no other free agent will sign here because we have a crappy foundation of leadership.
It starts with Nate and Roy and they have both undermined the team with their lack of leadership and direction. You can only trust the words of your leader, and Nate broke that with being wishy/washy on GO and Dre
Ohio State > University of Oregon State University
it was never about competition and earning it

yep, pretty clear now hahah
i’m pretty sure Bayless had demanded a trade, and Dre is not far behind…AND Blake too
hahahah
Ohio State > University of Oregon State University
I'll give you that...I've never been happy with now Nate handles point guards
J.Jack/Steve Blake days…yipes
i'm all for helping a young player
go through the bumps and bruises…
if we had known that all we got for Sergio is chump change, giving bayless 15 minutes a game for the whole season last year would have done wonders and we wouldn’t need to sign Dre
Ohio State > University of Oregon State University
i wish we could do an off BE discussion
so we can get some ins/outs on thoughts from you and shav regarding the team environment… i was even more curious after Ben’s report
Ohio State > University of Oregon State University
i won't talk about that kinda stuff here or elsewhere
..it’s not appropriate to air the inside stuff in public…
its hard from having it effect my opinions here and there, but i always tried hard to let people know the opinions i expressed were/are my own and don’t reflect those of shav..or others in the league for that matter…
trust me though…its hard to keep quiet sometimes not cause i have some big issue to air of any real “juicy” stuff..it’s just that I know people must have a high level of curiosity about how well the view from the inside matched the view from the outside
""..Sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own . . . "
KP did tell us he wants to give Rudy 30 mins remember?
so either he’s lying to us or him and Nate are not on the same page
Ohio State > University of Oregon State University
he's never been on a team this good...
Melo hadn’t committed to playing D yet, and their 6th man in 2006 was Eduardo Najera
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"

When he was in Cleveland the Cavs' 2nd best player was Lamond Murray
who the hell is Lamond Murray?!??!?
the Philly team he played on last year featured an injured Elton Brand…
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
Super Rodgers Bros.
the philly team last year played better without Brand… but that’s beside the point…
Let’s talk about the 02-03 Clippers… Brand, Maggette, Odom, Richardson, Miller = 27 wins (he was 26, the same age Billups won a Championship)
My point is Miller has always been a good player on a bad team, sort of like Shareef Abdur Raheem
the only guy who stayed healthy on that team was Miller
Brand, Richardson, Odom, and Maggette all played less than 65 games. The Kandi Man only played 36 games.
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
Super Rodgers Bros.
Besides, he made the playoffs both years in Philly
and he made the playoffs in Denver, despite having to depend on Najera as their 6th man.
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
Super Rodgers Bros.
I'm not sure what you're arguing
If you’re saying he as a team’s best player isn’t enough, no kiddin’.
If you’re saying that he isn’t good enough so that just by adding him a team instantly becomes contenders (like, say, Billups), no kiddin’.
Doesn’t mean he isn’t a good PG and hasn’t helped his teams wherever he was (aside from the Clippers, but who cares about the Clippers).
would you rather have
an average player on a good team or a good player on a bad team?
and the teams he’s played on, aside from his time with the Clips, haven’t been bad, they’ve been average
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
Super Rodgers Bros.
Not really similar
He’s not the main player on most or any of those teams, just an important part of it, and his teams were decent. Shareef’s were always God-awful.
It's such a silly argument to blame Miller's above-average teams on him
As if it’s some sort of negative. Yeah, he isn’t a allstar PG, but he’s been one of the best for a long time.
He hasn’t been some stat stuffing perennial loser.
Really, I just think he’s a bad fit on the Blazers team… Blazers need perimeter shooters, Miller is a post up point guard… I liked watching Miller on the sixers and have always thought he’s a good player, he just is a square peg in a round hole on this team… sometimes that’s the way it goes… to argue that he and Roy need to learn to play together seems like arguing that oil and water need to learn to mix… not going to happen for an extended period of time… It’s not a knock on either of them as players, but they’re styles don’t work well together
Now THAT I don't disagree with
That may be true.
But to use his teams against him as if it proves anything other than A: he isn’t a superstar and was never used as one and B: he was on mediocre to above average teams, is pointless to me.
Unless you’re Lebron, the quality of your teammates affects how much you win most of the time. Roy, in the past, has made his teammates better I believe, but he isn’t enough either.
And even Lebron
Needs help from his teammates.
If a guy is doing all he can to help a team win and has skills that lead to winning (with Dre, it is a post up game, playmaking, ability to get to the line, rebounding, and intelligence), then he isn’t a loser player like Al Jefferson or sumthin’.
my initial point was that Miller has never played with this level of talent before, and that the style of play he is used to may not mesh well… IE he may need to adjust his play, not the other way around… then i just started arguing for the sake of arguing… it’s all a blur really
hasn’t he adjusted his play? He’s playing good team defense and hasn’t dominated the ball at all. Really, he’s never had an unnatural usage rate.
i cry for nic
He HAS always played with a wing who also dominated the ball
Like I said before he even played, and many others said it too… the adjustment will more come from Roy, because Dre has experience playing with a Roy-like player in Iggy, and with a ball dominating scoring wing like Melo.
Dre has seen and experienced both. Roy is just another version… better in some ways, worse in others.
his way?
theres not a million ways to run the floor…
just a matter of getting used to peoples tendencies speed and habits
""..Sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own . . . "
and the blazers are talented sure..
but I seem to remember Dre and the sixers winning at the RG last yr…by alot…they weren’t such inferior talent
""..Sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own . . . "
why don’t we post up Dre? I mean, it’s not much different with Dre posting and LMA spacing for him as LMA posting and Dre spacing. Dre has a huge advantage in the post against 60%+ of point guards.
i cry for nic
we should post Roy up more too IMO
he abused smaller guards in college when Romar would just have him post up
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
Super Rodgers Bros.
LMA is better for spacing… he shoot better than Dre… but that does put 3 players in close proximity if you remember we have a center on the floor too
now he's steves 2nd
thats a bit…..odd?
""..Sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own . . . "
remember hwen he came in and said “look, Steve Blake has done some good things for them… but I expect to start.”

""..Sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own . . . "
if Roy and Miller are both only effective with the ball in their hands, then they are both inflexible and very difficult players to build around.
Roy needs a second playmaker. I’ve been watching a lot of old Bulls games lately, Pippen really initiated a large percentage of the offense and was the point quite a lot.
Roy just isn’t enough to win a title. He isn’t that good with the ball in his hands to tailor the entire team to his skill set.
i cry for nic
Yes, if he can't play with another good playmaker
It’ll be a replay of last year’s playoff series— take away Roy’s playmaking, let him score, and watch the rest of the team flounder.
this is true… but if we are going to have him change his style to fit in with a teammate it needs to be Oden (or some great player currently not on the team) not Miller IMO
I don’t think that it is mutually exclusive. Roy needs to play off the ball more to play with Oden, so him changing his game to Oden would likely make him quite compatible with Andre.
Why not give Roy the ball in the midpost instead of 30 feet from the hoop? Why not run him off picks for a nice sixteen foot elbow jumper? There are so many ways for him to score with Andre in the game.
i cry for nic
It’s not all about him. It’s about the team and what makes the team more effective. A lot of possessions end up with flaming bag shots because we only have one playmaker. When he is trapped, we are screwed into an ugly 22 footer. Int he past, Travis was able to save us as an ugly 22 footer was his specialty.
i cry for nic
We need a co-playmaker though
He needs to adjust to both Oden, and someone else making plays as well. Without being threatened by either.
No co-playmaker is why we see Blake dribble the ball in circles.
I think Oden can be that co-playmaker… he passes very well for a bigman… if that continues to develop, he could be russell-esque in this manner
Oden can’t come get the ball and create a play on the perimeter when Roy is trapped on the pick and roll.
Though I do think he is an excellent passer.
I think Nico could actually be a playmaker at some point.
i cry for nic
yes
especially since KP has surrounded him with good shooters (Martell, Rudy, Brandon, Outlaw [for at least this year], heck even LaMarcus)
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
Super Rodgers Bros.
Yes, I do agree, I love his passing
But a co-playmaker from the perimeter/wing is necessary.
Or we’ll never be able to get it into Oden, and once you keep it out of Roy’s hands, what can ya do?
Bayless or Batum seem like they will fit into this role… if Trout was healthy, his dribble dribble shoot kinda qualifies
Travis is more of a shot-creator than a playmaker I’d say. But creating shots in iso in Nate’s offense is a great skill.
i cry for nic
Travis is always an end point for a play/possession though
You can’t play through him.
Batum and Bayless may be the answer, but for now they ain’t. We need a secondary— just secondary, let Roy be primary— playmaker for the Now.
I would say that the problem with our offense right now isn’t general inefficiency, it’s inefficiency of about ten possessions a game when they force Roy to give up the ball late in the clock and there is no one to do something with the ball.
i cry for nic
ahhh,,,,the "here u try something" offense you mean
""..Sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own . . . "
If Roy isn't creating the offense
We have NO ONE ELSE ASIDE FROM MILLER.
That is not a good thing. Teams have learned you can get the ball out of Roy’s hands, through no fault of Roy’s, and then we are very easy to shut down offensively.
LMA and Oden can score off of isos in the post, pass out of the post decently enough, but before we can get it into them the defense will work to take it out of Roy’s hands on the most important possessions, and then we’re left with nothing.
yes this is what scares me
Bayless has shown he can create, but hasn’t shown that he can do so consistently (or at least hasn’t had the PT to do so).
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"

the creating offense 1 on 5 in a vacuum off high pics that still don't work is poor coaching
""..Sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own . . . "
yeah, I guess I just don’t see Andre as that secondary… and I don’t see him as good enough for the rest of the team, coaches included to rework everything that worked so well last year in order to fit him in… if he was a Lebron/Wade/CP3 level player that we brought in, sure lets rework the offense, but Miller isn’t there
but everything doesn’t have to change, and everything didn’t work so well last year. We bombed in the playoffs because they shut down teh one playmaker and it was all kaput.
Let’s just throw it out there and at least see how it looks instead of saying that they can’t play together. If Roy would give it a while, he would help him as he helped Iguodala.
i cry for nic
I don’t think changing the offense is as easy as “just throwing it out there”… they drill these plays ad nauseum… also, it’s not like this lineup hasn’t played together in games ever… they just haven’t started together… Are they blowing the opposition away when they are on the floor together? (actual question for one of the stat fiends here)
The Miller/Roy/Martell or Rudy/LMA/Oden lineup
Has outscored the opponents by an average of 8.31 per quarter.
So yeah, it has outperformed the other lineups.
but a change needs to happen or we will lose in the first round every year. Sticking with the status quo will get us a few wins in the regular year. Great, let’s get a system with multiple playmakers so we can be the Spurs and not the Cavs.
i cry for nic
Parker and Manu can't play together
Both need the ball to make plays.
And we know Parker was an amazing shooter early in his career, so he spaced the floor for Manu.
And both couldn’t penetrate with that dumb old Duncan loafing around inside!!
Rondo and Pierce have never coexisted well!!

Western Conference scout on Andre Miller’s future with the Portland Trail Blazers:
“Portland is probably going to trade him sooner rather than later, but I don’t think Miller has necessarily been the problem. I really don’t want to knock the kid, but I think some of it has to do with [Greg] Oden being on the floor. He’s been putting up some numbers, but I think they play more fluidly when [LaMarcus] Aldridge is at the 5.
“It’s great that the kid’s healthy, but Oden jams up the floor sometimes. If you’re the other team you want [Portland] to throw it to him. The more he gets it the less it’s in their best players’ hands.
“[Travis] Outlaw being hurt obviously hurts them because he can space the floor. To me their best group is when they’re playing smaller. Aldridge is much more of a handful at the 5 than the 4. "

the Bynum hype is funny, because he still isn’t as good as he was two years ago. He’s been bad on defense and the boards, and really not that efficient of a scorer, at least compared to Greg and for it to be considered a huge, huge strength.
i cry for nic
in terms of adjusted +/-
Greg is better by a wide margin.
If the guy were to say that the Lakers are better with Gasol at the 5 and Odom at the 4, then that’s probably a correct statement. But to say Portland is worse with Oden on the floor, despite the fact that Greg is really the only guy having a great year for the Blazers, that’s just an ignorant statement.

LA's knee has been bothering him since the OKC game thanks to Jeff Green

Oden did get hurt against Miami.
there was a like a 3 player pile up or something and Oden got up limping. he stayed in the game though. I don’t think it’s too serious.

two things
A) A loss doesn’t hurt you nearly as much in CBB as it does in CFB
B) Every team knows that the selection committee will look at teams you’ve played, and if you’ve had success playing a tough schedule, you are far more likely to either be selected or get a higher seed in the tourney.

For financial reasons, Jake Locker should declare for the 2010 NFL Draft.
Yet, even though Locker will soon likely be set for life, I bet that his NFL career will be a bust.
Locker’s poor accuracy and lack of touch will be his downfall, although the guy certainly is a freak athletically and has a cannon of an arm.

that's possible
if you noticed he had his knee bent when he was holding it, when the leg straightens out the kneecap can sometimes pop back into place, and the trainers may have been trying to do that.
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"

yeah
usually on a major injury like that you don’t want someone to see how fudged up it looks so they don’t have to deal with any additional stress or trauma or whatever.
you see it all the time in football and stuff where when the player dislocates a finger or breaks their leg they keep them looking up away from their body so they can’t see it.
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"

Ceterum censeo Lakers esse delendam
that's the scary thing
provided it’s just the kneecap he will be back this year.
I have had two friends who’ve dislocated their kneecaps. one was a clean dislocation, he was back playing basketball in 8 weeks. the other had additional trauma caused to his ACL as well as the kneecap and he was out 6 months…
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
Super Rodgers Bros.
I suppose the difference was that
he was in midair, was run into by an idiot trying to block his lay in, and landed directly on the side of his knee, which both popped the kneecap out and tore the ACL. Oden’s was a non-contact injury, which makes additional injuries to the knee unlikely

I like Joel Freeland, but not Victor Claver. Claver is an athletic, yet scrawny combo forward that ...
is unrefined — such Jonas Jerebko has been thus far this season with the Detroit Pistons — so you can color me unimpressed.
As it is, though, I’d go as far as this to get Rasho Nesterovic here before Christmas.
http://www.realgm.com/src_checktrade.php?tradeid=5312452
I’d add Patty Mills, too, but I don’t think Toronto would want him with Jarrett Jack and Marcus Banks already clogging up precious roster spots. Yet, if Bryan Colangelo is willing to clear a roster spot — which could be done by releasing the unproductive Antoine Wright or waiving the non-guaranteed contract of Pops Mensah-Bonsu — then they can take on Mills for all I care.

Before today, I'd've argued vehemently that anyone who claimed Greg Oden is injury prone was ...
being unfair to the big guy. At this point, though, the evidence is piling up — which upsets me, as I was one of the few Seattle SuperSonics fans back in 2007 who supported Oden over Kevin Durant — so we may soon have to face the music.
Dear Paul Allen:
Fire Nate McMillan & hire Jeff Van Gundy.
Sincerely,
AK1984
I don't get how it's a different injury each time
To me injury prone has always meant either a crybaby or a guy who keeps hurting the same injury over and over again. Playing a season every other year is injury prone to me. Does this mean the Blazers can sign Oden for cheap this summer?
Start Andre Miller NOW to showcase him for a trade.
With Greg Oden, I'm scared about how it's his knees that apparently aren't durable.
When people call Kirk Hinrich injury prone, I’d argue that wrist and thumb injuries aren’t chronic and he’ll be fine over the long haul. Knees, however, are an entirely different story, which I realize from watching Robert Swift bottom out miserably. Now, I know that Oden is an omnipotent deity compared to the fallen angel that is Swift, but knee injuries are a worrisome issue on any player.
Dear Paul Allen:
Fire Nate McMillan & hire Jeff Van Gundy.
Sincerely,
AK1984
this latest injury for Oden
has nothing to do with durability within the knee.
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
Super Rodgers Bros.
Call me a negative nancy or whatever, but knee injuries that keep piling up give me ...
a feeling of anxiety and apprehension. Now, while Greg Oden’s fracturing the patella left knee has nothing to do with him having microfracture surgery on his right knee a couple years ago, it still frightens me that during the future either one or both of his knees might not hold up in good health.
Dear Paul Allen:
Fire Nate McMillan & hire Jeff Van Gundy.
Sincerely,
AK1984
Well, that's not what I mean
a fractured patella like this has nothing to do with the ligaments or tendons or any other tissues inside the knee. If it were a torn patellar tendon, torn ACL, etc. then that’s a chronic issue. However, an injury to the bone like this where there is no problems with the joint itself is something that will heal back to100% and there should be no worries about the knee not being able to hold up over time.
It’s the same thing as, say, breaking an arm. You reset it, it heals, and eventually it goes back to normal and you never have to worry about it again.
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
Super Rodgers Bros.
Those are all good points.
Dear Paul Allen:
Fire Nate McMillan & hire Jeff Van Gundy.
Sincerely,

I'm so much happier that it's the bone and not the ligaments for a long term prognosis. The bone can heal, and maybe even be stronger than before,
while ligament damage is most often chronic and debilitating.

Same thing happened to McDyess I guess
All-Star Forward Expected To Miss The Entire 2002-03 Season
McDyess Has Successful Surgery On Fractured Left Patella
NEW YORK, October 16, 2002 – New York Knickerbockers forward Antonio McDyess had successful surgery today to repair a fractured left patella. Team Physician Dr. Norman Scott performed the two hour procedure at Beth Israel Singer Division after a second and third opinion confirmed the original diagnosis. The surgery was without complication, and McDyess will be able to begin rehabilitation following a 4-6 week period when the knee is immobilized in a cast.
He is expected to miss the entire 2002-03 season.
"Although we expect the full rehabilitation process to keep him out the entire season, this is not a career-threatening injury," Dr. Scott said. "He will be able to walk on crutches and put full weight on it later this week. We expect him to have a full recovery and be 100% by the start of next season."
The injury occurred during the Knicks’ preseason game versus the Phoenix Suns at Madison Square Garden on Oct. 12 with 1:55 remaining in the game on a put-back dunk. In three preseason games, the 6-9 forward has averaged 17.7 points, 13.0 rebounds and 29.0 minutes.

It's his knees that should make y'all fret regarding Greg Oden's long-term health, though.
Chronic foot injuries can be a problem, too, but that doesn’t yet appear to be a recurring thing with Oden. All in all, I still think people who call Oden brittle or a bust are crazy; however, this is the first time I’m seriously concerned about whether or not his lower body is sturdy enough to withstand the rigors of having a both long and healthy NBA career.

I’m a little concerned about Oden’s long term durability too. Thankfully, his right knee has held up really well so far in his career. It has been his left knee that has troubled him with the chipped bone and now this.

the 7 stages
1. SHOCK & DENIAL-
You will probably react to learning of the loss with numbed disbelief. You may deny the reality of the loss at some level, in order to avoid the pain. Shock provides emotional protection from being overwhelmed all at once. This may last for weeks.
2. PAIN & GUILT-
As the shock wears off, it is replaced with the suffering of unbelievable pain. Although excruciating and almost unbearable, it is important that you experience the pain fully, and not hide it, avoid it or escape from it with alcohol or drugs.
You may have guilty feelings or remorse over things you did or didn’t do with your loved one. Life feels chaotic and scary during this phase.
3. ANGER & BARGAINING-
Frustration gives way to anger, and you may lash out and lay unwarranted blame for the death on someone else. Please try to control this, as permanent damage to your relationships may result. This is a time for the release of bottled up emotion.
You may rail against fate, questioning “Why me?” You may also try to bargain in vain with the powers that be for a way out of your despair (“I will never drink again if you just bring him back”)
4. “DEPRESSION”, REFLECTION, LONELINESS-
Just when your friends may think you should be getting on with your life, a long period of sad reflection will likely overtake you. This is a normal stage of grief, so do not be “talked out of it” by well-meaning outsiders. Encouragement from others is not helpful to you during this stage of grieving.
During this time, you finally realize the true magnitude of your loss, and it depresses you. You may isolate yourself on purpose, reflect on things you did with your lost one, and focus on memories of the past. You may sense feelings of emptiness or despair.
7 Stages of Grief…
5. THE UPWARD TURN-
As you start to adjust to life without your dear one, your life becomes a little calmer and more organized. Your physical symptoms lessen, and your “depression” begins to lift slightly.
6. RECONSTRUCTION & WORKING THROUGH-
As you become more functional, your mind starts working again, and you will find yourself seeking realistic solutions to problems posed by life without your loved one. You will start to work on practical and financial problems and reconstructing yourself and your life without him or her.
7. ACCEPTANCE & HOPE-
During this, the last of the seven stages in this grief model, you learn to accept and deal with the reality of your situation. Acceptance does not necessarily mean instant happiness. Given the pain and turmoil you have experienced, you can never return to the carefree, untroubled YOU that existed before this tragedy. But you will find a way forward.
7 stages of grief…
You will start to look forward and actually plan things for the future. Eventually, you will be able to think about your lost loved one without pain; sadness, yes, but the wrenching pain will be gone. You will once again anticipate some good times to come, and yes, even find joy again in the experience of living.
You won.

I'm already at acceptance, which is where the Trail Blazers management should also be at right now.
Sometimes unfortunate stuff happens in life, which is why I preached the adage “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” this past off-season. As it stands now, though, the most prudent way to handle such dire circumstances is for the entire organization to dust themselves off, deal with this drawback accordingly, and go forward without looking back.

A survey of nearly 2,000 Australian students aged between 15 and 18 found that on average girls were spending $1,330 each on the big night while boys were spending an average of $840.
this must be just Prom or the Australian equivalent
that’s utterly ridiculous for an average. I really don’t get the number for guys. Most guys rent a tux, not buy one vs. girls who are probably buying a dress. Tickets ($30) Dinner ($80), rented tux ($100) and limo ($100)….what else? Even if those things are more expensive than that I can’t see it adding up to more than $500, which is still a crazy amount.

Yep.
If the players think they are fighting with Oden for more shots, imagine how it would have been with Durant.
That point is moot IMO
Remember, Durant would have come in Brandon and LMA’s 2nd years. Neither player were given THAT many touches their rookie season.

I agree that the right pick was Greg Oden, but had Kevin Durant been the pick he'd've gotten ...
more touches on offense than LaMarcus Aldridge without anyone batting any eye. Regardless, a trio of Aldridge, Durant, and Brandon Roy would’ve been a bottom-five defensive team. Indeed, they’d’ve been downright abysmal on defense.
Dear Paul Allen:

like my comment above, the touches would be completely different, because LMA didn’t start until GO’s/KD’s rookie year.

If I had to venture a guess, Nate McMillan would've used Kevin Durant in Portland similar to how he ...
used Rashard Lewis in Seattle. In that case, the Trail Blazers would’ve been a perennial 50-win team or so that got bounced in the first or second round each year due to horrid defense and relying too much on jumpers. It’d’ve basically been a Groundhog’s Day version of the 2004-2005 Seattle SuperSonics with Durant as Lewis and Brandon Roy as a iso scoring version of dead-eye shooter Ray Allen.
Dear Paul Allen:
Fire Nate McMillan & hire Jeff Van Gundy.

Meh, I'm the biggest Kevin Durant hater alive and even I know that you're using revisionist history ...
in this case. By the summer of 2007, LaMarcus Aldridge had shown nothing to prove he was anything more than a 4th or 5th option on offense.
So, if the Portland Trail Blazers had drafted Kevin Durant, the team would’ve basically been a modern-day version of the 2004-2005 Seattle Supersonics. This time around, however, Durant would be the weakside cornerman instead of Lewis and Brandon Roy would be like an iso scoring version of Ray Allen — who scored more as a spot-up shooter coming off of staggered screens — which would’ve formed an above average team in the regular season that’d’ve flamed out horrendously come playoff time due to terrible defense and a lakc of post play.

Fire Nate McMillan & hire Jeff Van Gundy.

This is a lost year as far as evaluating a coach
Unless there is a negative development not directly involving the record of this team which if poor, will be blamed on the fact that Nate’s best options right now would be suiting up Terrence Jones and Kyle Wiltjer (e.g., Brandon and Nate have a huge falling out) KP won’t evaluate him on this season. Given the rough start/issues re Miller’s assimilation, essentially I think this gives Nate a mulligan for 2009-10.

so the question I have is, does this make it more important to try and trade miller, for potentially two backup players,
or does it mean we are better off keeping him? He seemed to play his ass off tonight, but he is a potentially valuable trade chip, and he has not been integrated into our team this year. I don’t want to debate whose fault that is, or why it hasn’t happened, I’m just sayin.

last year we had travis to slide over at pf while LMA played center, or we could play Channing at the 5. We are seriously thin right now, and it will tax our guys hard. I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a trade or two in the next couple weeks, although at this point the expectations for this season have to be seriously mitigated. The question is does it make sense to attempt to salvage a season, that many could say might be an acceptable loss at the cost of sacrificing some long term key pieces for ongoing success.

Non-Blazer news for once
OSU Might open the season next year against TCU in Cowboys’ Stadium
De Carolis confirmed that OSU has had some discussion with Texas Christian about opening the 2010 season with an ESPN game at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, midway between Dallas and Fort Worth. It would replace the Sept. 4 game with Eastern Washington at Reser Stadium.
“ESPN has approached us about trying to do a game like that,” De Carolis said. “But right now we’d have to find somebody to take Eastern Washington,” and give the Eagles a payday game similar to the one they’d give up against the Beavers.
“That’s been the struggle.”
umm, if this goes through, then the Non-conference schedule next year is:
@TCU (Cowboys Stadium), @Boise State, vs. Louisville…
Katz’s first two games would be at two BCS teams from this year… Wow….
On another note, if it does go through, I might go to that TCU game — I know people that live in Fort Worth…

Some medical info from a fan, though of course he hasn't examined Greg's knee either
The pictures show that he dislocated his patella.
The fracture is most likely an impaction fracture of the patella on the lateral femoral condyle, unless the dislocation caused the medial portion of the patella to shear-off. The surgery will likely be done to repair his medial patellofemoral ligament and/or open reduction internal fixation of any boney fragments.

this is what scares me
If the fracture is severe enough surgery may require the placement of metal rods in the knee, which would then require an additional procedure a year out to remove the rods

Very bummed
I personally had a good day with moving, until this happened of course.
If it is “only” a break, it really is okay. As far as long-term championship hopes go. It just reaaaallllly suuuuuuuuuuuuuucks. He can return and be as good as he was this year and keep improving, but Jesus Christ— let the kid play and develop.

I ain't an expert
But if it is only a broken bone, then it is only a broken bone.
The surgery to put it back in place makes it worse than a normal broken bone I am sure, but still— “just” a broken bone. Not gonna cause his knee to not work as good.

My feelings on this injury
Is that I ain’t worried about the injury, but I am worried about the blow to his psyche, how the team handles adjusting to him again, and staying in shape.
The injury sounds… not bad, considering the thoughts racing through all of our heads when we saw him fall.

Oh man
I was hoping — when he went down and the Rockets’ Staff immediately rushed to him — that it was just a dislocated kneecap. He would have been out a couple months and back on the team by March at the latest. Sounds like that’s what the team was hoping prior to the X-Ray as well.
Patellar fractures are extremely rare and extremely unlucky considering there was no direct trauma on the knee, like slamming it on the ground or anything.
This is better than, say, he tore his ACL though. Way better.

by far the nastiest knee injury i have ever seen
like i said earlier, i saw one of my friends get taken out while attempting a lay in and tear his patellar tendon, his acl, and dislocated his kneecap (ended up on the outside of his leg, 90 degrees from the knee joint), but that pales in comparison to Livingston’s

I don't think it will be as bad on his psyche as the first one. At least now he's had some time to develop in real game situations.
I think he’s gonna come back strong as an ox, and even hungrier. One thing I’m hoping for, is this will help change his team mates perception of him, from the point of view of realizing what they are missing with him not being on the floor. Hopefully this will be an impetus to integrate him further in the offense when he does come back, because I think Roy and Lma will really have to carry this team now, and they will be wishing they had that beast down low come the second part of the season.

I think Greg's mental state will be okay because
he’s a much more integral part of the team now. With the micro fracture none of his team mates really knew him yet and they probably didn’t rally round him like they will this time.
#52
If this was related to last year's incident, and there are signs it could have been prevented
Then the training staff will likely be let go. Lots of if’s in there though.
I don't think so, other than that Greg should wear freaking knee pads from here on out just to be sure.

I think it's just one of those things
2009 was the worst year of my life as well thus far, even if you take out Oden’s injury tonight. But it was just one of those years, one of those things… crap piled up and hit at once.
Paul Allen’s cancer, Nate rupturing his achilles, Patty Mills, Pendy, Trout, Batum, Rudy still suffering from back problems from last season and likely made worse by not resting during the summer, uhhh, who else… Bayless sprains an ankle before a game…
What can be linked to the staff? Rudy?
I know too many doctors to think they are infallible, so questioning them when one knows enough to question it is fine, but I dunno what can be linked to something they are doing ‘wrong’.

the Rudy thing surprised me. It was a bit out of the blue, wasn’t it? At least I didn’t read anything previously that suggested he was going to be out for a number of games.

There were only mentions of LMA and Greg having minor injuries before 6pm or so tonight.

That entirely depends on how 'chipped' or 'cracked' it was last year
If just a tiny bit of bone on the ligament went away, then it’s not related at all. Other than speculating that Greg has bad kneecaps/knees. If it was more or less split and they didn’t do nothing to secure it with a splint or something, then that’s on the team doctors.
If that's the case, the Trail Blazers training and medical staffs should be dismissed from their duties.

AK has figured out pretty much how KP will 99% not go about fixing the roster now
Appreciate the effort though
Yet, I'm not KP, for I've got a wholly different view of what constitutes as balanced roster construction.
Beyond having a couple of two-way superstars as franchise cornerstones — with one usually a center and the other a wing player — I’ll argue strongly that frontline depth and interior defense are easily of the utmost importance.

Just a horrible night
I want to feel optimistic about this season, but quite honestly it feels like a wreck. I know the guys (all 7 of them) will keep playing hard, but the same worries that accompanied the hopes for this year (Oden’s health, PG, etc.) are carrying over into next year, and as freak as this injury was, GO is now in that Yao category of good when healthy, but rarely healthy.

It’s like some cosmic force is kicking the chair out from under arrogant Blazers fans. I know for real it’s not their fault, but when I think about their expectations and crapping on players and coaches, that something really bad was going to happen that was beyond everyone’s control.
I blame the fans.
