Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Via text message from the team...
--------------
Nate McMillan will undergo surgery on Monday to repair ruptured right Achilles tendon. McMillan will coach Saturday versus Houston but will miss the team's upcoming 4 game road trip.

Nate McMillan sustained injury at Friday's practice. Lead Assistant Dean Demopoulos will serve as head coach in McMillan's absence.
--------------
During today's practice, Nate McMillan, along with Assistant Coach Monty Williams, participated in full-court scrimmage play because the team's recent rash of injuries left them short of live bodies.

McMIllan conducted his post-practice interviews while sitting on a training table. His right ankle area was iced and he was in noticeable pain, grimacing at times.

The scene was totally surreal then and, given this update the Blazers just sent over, is even more surreal now. Thoughts go out to Coach McMillan.

PS Thanks to llamaiguana who had this in the fanshots.

What if Nate lives where Comcast is not available?

Dave, if Nate shows up on BE asking for a game feed will he be banned?

Even now Nate would at least play defense !!

But who are Blazer fans going to blame while him and Travis are both out ?

Reasonable assumption

In the unlikely event that Portland loses Saturday, wins through the road trip, then loses upon return, things will quickly get nuts.

I’m very surprised Monty didn’t get the call. He was almost hired as Minn’s coach last Summer, so he probably would be a decent head coach for a short stint.

Dean's To Do List

1. Play Blake at least 30 minutes
2. Pull Oden from the game to rest him only when he’s playing well
3. Sit Oden for the half if he gets 2 fouls.

any others?

Semi-common injury for overweight, older, out of shape folks that try to push it to hard

at bball or other explosive running/jumping sports. My buddy blew out his achilles when he was chubbed up and out of shape and tried to go rambo style in a pickup game, having not played in a few years…and that was just a pick up game. Go try to hang with the pros.

Respect the effort Nate, but you’re a coach now, bro. Stick to that.

by Dunemonkey on Dec 4, 2009 4:22 PM PST reply actions

It happened to me last year at 45

but I’m wasn’t overweight or out of shape. I was playing ball 2-3 times a week. Went up for a rebound and pop! I took 9 months off and am back at it again.

I think if it is your time, it will just happen.

by TallTimber on Dec 4, 2009 6:00 PM PST up reply actions

Ruptured my achilles in April.

30 years old, in basketball shape, and had no prior injuries.
Achilles rupture really sucks and it’s a freak injury most of the time. I did mine shooting a jump shot all by myself during a pickup game. Felt a big ‘pop’ and my foot went numb. Almost 8 months in and I’ve just started jogging and light jumping. Hope Nate has a good recovery and is able to be back on the sideline soon.

by sfiles on Dec 4, 2009 6:03 PM PST up reply actions

Worst part was that I did my right one like Nate...

and that meant no driving. I hated being driven around by everyone for 8 weeks.

I don’t know how Nate’s going to do it for the next two months. It’s supposed to be elevated as much as possible, absolutely no weight. Luckily (or unluckily) for me I have a desk job and could work during my injury.

Good luck Nate and don’t try to walk on it too fast.

by TallTimber on Dec 5, 2009 6:35 AM PST up reply actions

right one for me also.

and no weight bearing for the next 8 weeks. It would be tough to coach on crutches, then hobbling around the sideline with a boot for the rest of the season. I hope the training staff is working on a chair for Nate that will put phil jackson’s to shame.

NATE YOU'LL BE MISSED !

I don’t care what people say about firing Nate.. The truth is that if it weren’t for him, this team would not be in this great position to this day. He’s worked this team into a winner. Remember he’s on the sidelines, the players (except Oden) are the ones who should be blamed for the 3 game losing streak, its not like any of these games came to the wire and he blew it with his coaching decisions. Anyway… I hope this doesn’t affect us.. we have a tough schedule coming up. Fast recovery for Nate & GO BLAZERS !

Get well soon, Nate

Obviously this road trip is going to be a no-win situation for him image-wise. If the Blazers lose people will say he must have been keeping too tight of a hold on the team and/or his assistants weren’t free to do what they wanted. If the Blazers win people will point to that as evidence of how much better the team is with somebody else at the helm. So the best thing is probably just to wish a speedy recovery.

I think we all wish him a speedy recovery. It has to really, really hurt. Like double Norco hurt.

But…it would be a nice time to see who could call the most successful set of plays. Great time for the players “to figure it out.” Miller could call plays for all players. Brandon could for he and LA. Time for him to show something else. Anyone else?…uh…I dunno…Blakey….mmmm…….Bayless….nnnnnnn…..

I don't get it

Don’t we already have three PGs? And we need another for practice? Was Nate wanting both the first and second unit to run with two PGs?

Maybe it’s a good thing we kept Patty Mills after all. Once he’s healthy we can have the full complement of double PGs on both first and second unit.

I suppose it isn’t nice to get snarky on a thread like this. Get well soon, Nate. Watch the games from a distance and see if you pick up anything you are missing from the bench, and come back ready to make this machine roll.

Three-point percentages

2005/06 Euro 16.0
2005/06 ACB 28.2

Now that Kings fans love him more he’s hitting around 50%.

First of all...

condolences to Nate on his injury. It would be heartless to rag on him at a time like this.

With that, I have a question and a comment. Is it common for head coaches to practice on the court? The Blazers have a lot of assistant coaches. It seems like they’re the ones that should be out there teaching the players. I can’t imagine Phil Jackson or the other top coaches in the league out there on the practice floor. Maybe I’m wrong about that.

My comment is this. I wonder if a head coach who’s on the practice floor is thinking more like a head coach or like a player. Team leadership is a lot different than being on the floor with the guys. I think this says a lot about what the problem is with the Blazers.

With that, I hope Nate gets well soon.
