ouch, that's what I was thinking
It may very well be that his silent personality is a hindrance to the team getting to know eachother, but it seems more like he is just trying to keep his trap shut and do his job, in what is admittedly a jacked up situation for him as a ten year starter, while feeling out the team and the dynamic. To me it feels more like parts of the team and/or Nate are coldshouldering him a bit and he’s trying to figure out how to handle that without being the “whiney cancer guy.”
It may not seem like it from this post, but I haven’t traditionally been a Nate basher. That said, it sure is starting to feel like some folks around this team are throwing Miller under the bus, and if the coach is going to join in…just wow.
How can you, AS THE COACH of the team, talk to the media about how Miller isn’t working out because he’s not communicating. It’s your JOB to communicate with your players, so if your only communication with this 10 year starting point guard is to bench him, and then complain to the media that he doesn’t talk enought, that’s on you, coach.
Among many things that made my skin crawl about this interview, were his resounding “no” to whether he sees progress, and his answer to “do you think the situation will improve”: “Maybe it does and maybe it doesn’t’.” Weak sauce, Nate. So when asked whether the big three will work it out, his answer is, “It has to.” But for Miller…whatever. Nice vote of confidence. The wheels and the bus running over you go round and round, Miller.
Sorry for the tirade, but that just rubbed me way wrong.

Why does honesty make your skin crawl?
Miller’s a big boy. He doesn’t like to talk, and it’s fair to say the silent treatment probably doesn’t help team chemistry. If he’s offended, he could consider contributing more. Nate wasn’t “complaining” or throwing anyone under the bus…. he was just answering a question honestly.
Miller isn’t required to talk, but let me ask you, what do you think of a person who only does the bare minimum?
So you're saying Miller is doing the bare minimum?
I think Miller is doing what he is being allowed to do. Sure he should talk more if that’s what is needed, but since he’s basically being told to assume a roll (back up, or when with the starters to play off ball) that’s probably pretty uncomfortable for him, he’s just trying to handle that situation as best he can. He probably knows that what he would have to say conflicts with what the coach is asking him to do, so he’s just shutting up and trying to fit.
And sure, honesty does make my skin crawl if it’s brutally applied to one guy (Miller), but the kid gloves come out for another (Roy—and don’t take that the wrong way, I love Roy and I’m not suggesting Nate should trash him).
It just sounds like he’s already given up on Miller with answers like “(Long pause) We have him now. And maybe it does or maybe it doesn’t.” It sounds like he’s filled with regret that we picked up Miller, like the proverbial bad parent just rolling his eyes and shaking his head at the lame child the fates bestowed upon him. It’s just a strikingly different tune than, “they’ll have to work it out because they’ll be around here a long time,” when referring to the big three working out. It smacks of favoritism, and it feels like a guy getting frozen out of the cool crowd before they give him a chance to show what he can do.
Yeah, that’s a lot of conjecture, so disagree if you like, but that just didn’t feel right to me.
I haven’t heard Nate show that little confidence PUBLICLY about a player since Sergio, and we know how that ended. Odd, since he ostensibly knew so much about him (ten years of game film to watch), and that we heard from Philly players and fans that they loved him to death, but who knows.

Start Andre (in a 2 guard lineup)

i
have nothing against miller i think he is a very good pg and on a team like philly he could have been doing great with iggy but he was the absolute wrong fit for this team. Its not his fault he was brought here.
Hasn't been given a chance
I want to see him at least start at pg a few times before we write him off as a mistake.
He started at PG for 9 games

I'm not writing him off
just saying that this argument doesn’t hold water.
Andre is likely to be producing very well for us soon.

Regarding quiet guys
Speaking personally, I’d like to be part of the conversation but in my experience the things I do have to say tend to stop the conversation in its tracks. I’m that stranger in the strange land and I not only see things from a different perspective but I communicate things differently as well. I get the feeling Andre’s the same way because he seems to have a lot to say whenever someone approaches him and they’re open to hearing him out.
Maybe when Miller does speak out, he gets misunderstood. Maybe he sounds standoffish or whatever. Maybe Nate might take some time and ask Miller’s opinion on things if he values his opinion as a veteran. If the answers he gets don’t quite jive with Nate’s viewpoints, maybe he could find the patience to try and see where Andre’s coming from.
Often when I talk about important issues with my wife, the first couple things I say just make her angry. But because we’re committed she’s learned to be patient and hear me out. She waits for me to wind my way through my circular reasoning. Usually the first part came from miscommunication and it turns out we both see eye to eye more often than not. It works with my wife because she can’t get away from me, but with people at work I’ve learned that small talk is usually best. When they get the glazed look in their eyes, I just change the subject.
wow, way to be a leader coach...
This does not really give me a good feeling about Nate. To be going on about all that crap to the media, sounds like he has something personal against Dre and is jockeying for position in the court of public opinion. Pretty lame, would be nice if Nate could just man up and take care of things internally.
Also, during games both on the court and on the bench Dre is one of the most communicative players out there. You can see him talking things over with Greg, giving feedback to players coming off the floor, gesturing and directing people on O and D, etc.
Andre's making what, $14M for 2 years?
Poor baby can talk.
This is one bizarre situation and an amazing interview.
Nate envisioned Miller leading the 2nd unit (I believe since day-one) and setting up and running with Rudy, Travis, and Webster while still playing quite a bit with LMA and Greg (based on their substitution/rest patterns). After losing Batum and Travis, it compromised the rotation and the 2nd unit. So Nate seems willing to cut Miller some slack for the lack of 2nd team effectiveness (“it’s only Rudy out there”), but only a little (“we still could be sitting here saying the same thing” [about the 2nd unit being a non-factor without the injuries]).
It seems to me Nate is trying to explain the logic behind why they signed Miller, and maybe why it hasn’t worked (injuries), but that it might not have worked anyway (communications issues even without injuries). He says he hasn’t seen any progress in Miller fitting in with the Blazers (“No. Because that’s who he is. … The progress is — no, he doesn’t talk.”, and “Sometimes, being in a room and not saying anything can say just as much as someone who …”).
It sounds like Nate has given up on Miller (hard to believe he would say these things publicly otherwise), but in fact I think he is going to start Miller (especially if we lose to Houston) because what we are doing now isn’t working and there’s not much else left to try. Then if that fails, Dec 15 will be here and moving Miller will become the top priority.
If the Blazers should trade Miller I hope they don’t have to give up Rudy to get something of value back. I’d still like to see an entire year of Rudy before making a decision on his Blazer future. I see (still inconsistent) improvements in Rudy’s defense, and mixed (sometimes ugly) results with him trying to create his own shot more. I think you need a year to see where that ends up. But his turnovers are also up this year and his 3-pt shooting has been more streaky than last year (although his % is nearly the same, 39% vs 40%), so it’s possible KP could bite on a high-quality SF and 2nd/3rd string PG filler for Miller and Rudy. I’d rather see a Webster+Miller trade, but I doubt Webster would add enough sweetener for a really good SF.

Simple case of Miller not knowing his role
He was signed to be the backup.
Start Andre Miller NOW to showcase him for a trade.
