Around SBN: Miikka Kiprusoff Wins 300th Game, Buffalo Crushes Boston

On Wheels at Work today, Jason Quick reported that Nate McMillan is considering moving Andre Miller into the starting lineup again, possibly as soon as tomorrow's game against the Houston Rockets. Quick also reported that Rudy Fernandez worked with the first team in practice today and that this change wasn't caused by any injury to Martell Webster.

Greg Oden is listed as probable tomorrow with his ankle. I would be very surprised if he didn't play. LaMarcus Aldridge did not practice today and is listed as questionable (gametime decision) tomorrow. More from practice later this afternoon. For now, read the analysis posted this morning.

Good.

Dre > Blake

Rudy > Webster

Of course the spanish translation for defense is a look of shock and horror when the whistle blows….

Start Miller

Thank you.

I’d like Webster to stay in the starting lineup though.

Rudy off the bench 1st and playing lots of minutes though.

PG-Miller
SG-Roy
SF-Webster
PF-LMA
C-Oden

Try it for a few games please.

Enjoy the Ride

This is Houston

Brandon can handle their SFs without much trouble, so a three guard lineup is fine (as long as it isn’t two PGs).

Rudy is a starter by nature

He’s not a 6th man. Yes he’s young and needs to develop but he’s a natural born star. Fighting it causes a rift in the continuum.

Miller

in place of Blake is obvious to me but Fernandez for Webster ?…

Webster is the better defender, has the body of a SF, and Fernandez is better with the ball in his hands, something needed on the bench if Miller and Roy aren’t on it…

They all would make good bench players

We will need 5 good “team players” on the floor though….This could be the problem…..
They can switch lineups all they want, this team has deeper issues……Yes, they can be fixed, but unfortunately, I haven’t heard the right answer from any of the players or coaches, yet…..the reason? simple lack of fundamental application and the good play and teamwork that go along with it. Without sound fundamentals, your just a bunch of average players that look just plain silly…..it’s like jumping in the Corvette and taking down the road with no gas in the tank …….. gee, even Charles Barkley notices it…..

Interesting.

My question is, how awful will are bench be?

by axel360 on Dec 4, 2009 1:37 PM PST reply actions

we got killed

by a Golden State team that only had 7 available players. That’s obviously not ideal, but I do think that you want to try and maximize the number of minutes for your best players. We’ve done that with Roy and Aldridge, and would probably do it with Greg if it weren’t for foul trouble. Splitting the point guard minutes down the middle may actually serve to hamper both Miller and Blake. Give the better player the majority of the minutes, this goes for Fernandez over Webster too.

MRI vs radiographs (x-rays)

You really don’t get a whole lot of new info from a MRI that you wouldn’t see on a normal radiograph (r x-ray to most). Where MRI blows radiography out of the water is when you are looking at a soft tissue injury, such as a cranial cruciate rupture, but not so much for a direct bony lesion. CT might give you some more info, but contusions (bone bruises) are fairly straightforward injuries diagnostically.

What are you impressions of Roy?
"He's just a very, very good basketball player. Very smart. Very heady. He can do a little bit of everything on the court. As coaches, when we scout Portland we kind of put him in the same category as Kobe (Bryant), LeBron (James), Dwyane Wade. We treat him the same. He's that good."

by CMCWizard on Dec 4, 2009 2:37 PM PST up reply actions

Right, but when you get bruises (aka small fractures)

it’s a good idea to look at the rest of the knee. Sometimes they result from instability.

I'm a really really ridiculously good looking orange mocha frappaccino drinking manhammer sandwich

by hobobob on Dec 4, 2009 5:06 PM PST up reply actions

True

I was just pointing out that MRI won’t tell us anything more about the contusion. I’m not sure whether they did a MRI when he first injured it or not. It would depend what part of the “knee” the contusion is located. if it’s not part of the articular surface of either bone (Tibia, fibula or femur) , rather just in that general area of the body it’s unlikely due to instability.

Doesn’t help I thought it was along the shin. :P

What scares me is that he knew exactly where it was and drew and X on it.

Not totally sure why, but that sounds like a tibial plateau fracture to me.

I’m sure they did an MRI anyway. It’s not like you skimp on that sort of thing with an NBA player.

Um, but I understand what you were saying, and please don’t think I think I know more than you about it.

I don’t think it makes sense for a “ball hog” to be on the floor with Roy since they are both play makers. Roy’s strength isn’t coming off screens and catching and shooting. Miller never should have been signed, even thought I understand why he was.

Sort of

There’s not much to argue with there. But, does Miller do much better, and would he do better than Blake/Roy would when Blake shows up? I doubt it. The problem here is D, and hitting 3s. They’re pretty much even in one category, the other isn’t close.

If Miller learned to not take away from Roy’s more significant game, then he’d be worth starting. Until then, what’s it really matter because Blake’s playing like crap anyway. But, Blake can come back. Miller’s never going to get good from outside and not instinctively take the ball from Roy. Once Miller, if Miller learns to bolster rather than detract from what Roy does, then there’s the time to start Miller. Until then, alpha’s alpha and beta’s adjust. That’s how to win.

That said, if Miller can make the rest of the team better while slightly detracting from Roy, it’d be alright to start him. That hasn’t happened yet either. Maybe it will, but you’d want to see a glimmer before starting him.

Yeah, because the main attribute for a PG should be the ability to space the floor.

Seriously, do people understand what a PG is supposed to do in an offense? I know that we went without a pure PG for a while, but the whole idea that our PG needs to shoot 3’s are starting to get ridiculous. It’s the wing players’ job to shoot the 3 ball, not the PG. Let guys like Brandon, Rudy, and Martell space the floor and let Miller do his PG thing.

12-7 is a decent record, considering all of the injuries,

but I feel like Nate wasted the first quarter of the season hemming and hawing over what was painfully obvious to most of the rest of us: Miller > Blake.

The reason Rudy makes some sense in this lineup is that he can handle the ball, which makes it easier for he and Brandon to work together and space the floor. Andre can work the other side of the floor with Greg. Andre is also stout enough to hang with some 3’s on the block. LMA can roam around the concession area getting ice for his knee and launching the newly revealed NBA 10 point shot. AWESOME! David Stern is a genius.

something like 12-4 at worst. Seriously, this was supposed to be an ELITE team. Never mind that anymore.

by thetsaiguy on Dec 4, 2009 3:12 PM PST up reply actions

That would be 16-4 wouldn't it?

Too little to late or better late then never?

It just makes me wonder with the trade rumors of Andre Miller if this isn’t just a stunt to showcase Dre to bump up his trade value. Miller should of been starting in preseason.. I hope they are not just setting him up to fail. Hopefully he can get Oden going early and Greg can do some damage. I kinda wish that Greg would stand up and say that he wants
Andre to stay. Perhaps that would make KP think twice before trading him away. I can’t help but feel disappointed by Brandon’s play and attitude this year. If in fact we do end up trading Miller it’s really not doing much in the way of making Portland look attractive for future free agents.

by slim503 on Dec 4, 2009 3:05 PM PST reply actions

Nobody is going to bump Millers trade value.

Everyone knows his value (with the possible exception of Nate).
The guy has been around for a while and very very steady.

by Jeffe Portland on Dec 4, 2009 6:02 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

Don't care if it's to showcase Dre or not...

As long as he gets in the starting lineup with Oden…

And I’m convinced that once Dre realizes it’s go time, and he’s allowed to run (with Rudy and LMA, soon, hopefully!), this could be really fun to watch…

Sure hope this rumor is true….

by Visionary2 on Dec 4, 2009 3:11 PM PST reply actions

I just did and Writer Mark J. Miller just changed Lionel Hollins name to Lionel Hampton....

What is with these writers and their inability to check the facts?

Of course you were probably referring to Mark J. Miller’s article about trading ’dre, huh?

So maybe this chance at the starting lineup is to get his trade value back up to something more than just his contract.

This rumor stuff is worth exactly what you have paid for it – nothing.

So basically

dre and blake will each play about 25-30 minutes. How is that much different than before? Tinkering with the starting lineups isnt going to make a world of difference. If i had to guess i think KP and Nate have assured B-roy that miller will be gone very soon and to just have him out there until they can find a team to trade him to. That little peace of mind would probably explain roy’s change in attitude lately. At least i hope……

I would leave Martell at the 3 if I had my druthers

But starting Miller without Blake has me excited. Besides, when Nic returns he’s probably the starter at the 3 for defensive purposes as it is, so at some point Martell needs to learn to bring it off the bench.

The Blazerverse and The Wire: A comparison
Brandon Roy = Stringer Bell (smooth technician dedicated to his craft)
Nate McMillan = Cedric Daniels (well intentioned leader, but he can be too rigid for his own good at times)
Martell Webster = Wee Bey Brice (straight up solider who follows orders; every organization needs these guys to be successful)
Jerryd Bayless = Marlo Stanfield (he's new to the game, but he's watching and waitng; he will take over and there will be casualties)
Rudy Fernandez = Jimmy McNulty (he gets results, but the leadership wishes he was less of a wild man; the ladies love him)
Greg Oden = Michael Lee (he started off a quiet kid, but he's beginning to tap in to his huge potential to change the game)
Andre Miller = Lester Freamon (do not let the laconic demeanor fool you, the veteran knows what's up)
John Canzano = Scott Templeton (scummy muckraker who stays up at night polishing his award)

by blazeraddict on Dec 4, 2009 3:27 PM PST reply actions

But starting Miller without Blake has me excited.

It’s at least a starting point to see what we have with Miller and Roy.

I’d prefer starting Webs over Rudy so nobody is forced to play out of position, but baby steps.

Second unit:

Roy, Blake, Dante, Priz, Howard

Roy and Blake can play catch and dribble a lot, and the other three can wait around for the rebounds.

WE'RE GETTING THERE...

I absolutely love the Start Miller thing.. give the guy a chance… But… Martell to the bench? He’s played awful when coming off the bench and I think Rudy starting (without travis in the bench) would take our firepower from the second unit. Anyways.. at least McMillan is considering starting Miller.. thats a first.

by Iwvelez on Dec 4, 2009 5:15 PM PST reply actions

1st vs 2nd unit is a bust

If I were dong the rotations, barring horrible foul trouble, I ALWAYS have at least one of our “big 3” in the game. Preferably two of the 3. If you have nothing but 5 subs in the game, it lets the other team rest their players or allows them to essentially take some offensive possessions off as you don’t have a real double-team threat on the floor. I know Nate loves the saying, but it’s not like we are doing hockey line changes or anything.

Keep Dante in the starting lineup

I’d be curious to see a starting lineup of Miller, Roy, Oden, LMA and Dante. It would lack 3 point shooting, but we would have a lot of size.

I'm not reveling in Nate's injury whatsoever, I really feel for the guy, that must be very painful...

But I think the change in coach will allow Miller more freedom to create, and Nate the ability to observe what the team can do when not being micromanaged.

Oh, and I still maintain

out best basketball of the entire year was in that first half against the spurs with Miller at point and Macmillan NOT calling the plays. Just let them play, and encourage the concepts. Let them go.

by zersrule on Dec 4, 2009 11:29 PM PST reply actions

Just my 2 cents

Dre makes GO better he actually looks for Go.
Blake looks for Roy.

Roy may not like it but he needs a hand in running the offense even though his extremely talented his still young having to be the Go to guy and the play maker is gonna take some out of you. I think this season in his play you can see it a little do I shoot or pass and he pauses just a faction off the dribble and it creates little mistakes.

I think they need someone to come in and either be the go to guy or playmaker even though Go is more efficient no one doubts Roy ability as the go to guy so I think they finally decided to go with Dre and piss off Roy by benching Blake.

Just my delusion View.

by Itoko on Dec 4, 2009 11:49 PM PST reply actions

Dude!

Roy is a 2 guard. Happy to see Miller start in place of Blake, BUT STOP DANCING AROUND THE THING. Start Miller and Roy at their positions, and let’s see them figure it out.
