Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Whether he's a tool or not Awoj has his ear in there.

Hinrich somehow in, Miller out wouldn't upset me. Not sure what else would work. I'm starting to like Miller as a person, but he hasn't played well, and he hasn't shown the passion I hoped for.

he just hasn’t shot well. That should regress to his career rate, more or less. His defense is the thing that we all salivate over.

Obviously we (at least most of us) don't see behind the scenes...

But if Millers not working… to me it seems its not really Millers fault. There was only what 9-10 years of NBA footage available to the blazer staff to research before going after him. They knew what they were getting. Maybe he doesn’t fit the system… But the system as I see it isn’t all that great with or without Andre.

by tmundal on Dec 4, 2009 8:19 AM PST reply actions

This system will never win a championship.

Miller should at least be tried out as a starter, in a normal 2 guard line-up, just to see how it works. I believe it would really help change our system for the better, especially for Greg. Even if Miller isn’t a good fit, the fact is our system can’t stay as it was last year and the way that BRoy wants it, or we will never go to the finals. A 1-on-4 iso didn’t get Lebron to the finals, so it sure as heck aint gonna get Broy to the finals. Oh wait, I forgot, he thinks he compares to DWade. The truth is we need more movement, fastbreaks, and center involvement. This is what wins championships and is proven over and over again.

by Coastie07 on Dec 4, 2009 8:38 AM PST up reply actions   1 recs

Roy iso's about 5-10 times a game unless he is hot. Its nothing like the Cavs.

Fastbreaks dont win championchips, and Oden is no Olajuwon. Roy is closer to Wade than Oden is to a Center than can carry them to a title. The offense that they have now can win a title. They couldnt hit a shot didnt fastbreak well and still scored 100 points against the Heat. They could use more movement though but I will say this, Martell is moving more than ever he just isnt hitting.

by Kaanyr Vhok on Dec 4, 2009 1:38 PM PST up reply actions

spot on post. miller has never been a spotup long range shooter. how many times this season has roy passed him the ball near the 3 pt line with a 2-3 sconds left on shotclock.

what miller brings to the table is ability to run an offense (one that looks like a real offense), create shots for the bigs, and distribute to open shootesr, all the while being able to get to the line. he is a mediocre one on one defender, but a good team defender. he rebounds well, and is a great long passer in fastbreak basketball. he is very aware of where all the players are.

he took a team that iverson destroyed to the playoffs when most thought they would lose 60 games. i thought he got as much as possible out of the 76ers limited talent last couple years. as a starting point guard with portland’s talent , this team should be unbelieveably good after a bit.

why would you sign miller if not to start him? if it were my team i would go with roy, aldridge, oden, miller, and rudy. penetrators and shooters, with super inside potential. roy and macmillan just haven’t bought into the idea that blake shouldn’t start, and have seemingly continually put miller into situations and lineups where he can’tmake the team better.

fwiw, it wouldn’t surprise me if they trade miller because of roy and macmillan. that said, this could be a great team with roy running the offense. oddest thing to me is, if roy bought into the miler scheme he is the likely biggest beneficiary. in philadelphia, igdougla bloomed after iverson left and miller came in. iggy and roy are not that dissimilary, though iggy a much better finisher at the rim and roy a better shooter.

Totally agree!

I really don’t understand why McMillan won’t start Miller. Any other team would see that he needs to start. It seems a better coach would be able to show BRoy the stats and TELL him that Andre will start and that he needs to learn how to work off the ball.

To go anywhere in the league..

Sorry if this post has no direction, as I just had a 24oz rockstar, and like three cups of coffee…

You need a great coach (which we may or may not have…I lean towards not…though I am hoping I turn out to be wrong). And you need weapons. High powered weapons, and more than one of them. Brandon has to realize that his 1 on 5 days might be over (they certainly look like it) and although he is an awesome player, sorry Brandon, you’re not, nor will you ever be Dwayne Wade or Kobe Bryant. Doesn’t mean you can’t produce wins like they do, or win championships. But you’re not unstoppable. Good thing is… you have a young guy in the low post, that barring injuries, and with a little more work, very well could be damn close to it. And with you guys playing off each other…wow… the possibilities.

As it is, if Oden’s head is in the game, there are only a handful of centers in the league that can even attempt to slow him down. On defense he is a monster, and on offense if hes given the ball in the right position he gets shots that sooner or later will start falling. Plus (and this is a HUGE plus) the dude can make free throws. Shaq can’t. Dwight Howard can’t. But our guy can.

Lamarcus wants to be an all star. Its good to want…. Now..go out and I dunno… play like it? Rasheed 2.0 isn’t going to get you there. Though I wouldn’t mind you getting just a little bit of his attitude. Guy was stupid at times…but at least he had/has a fire inside him. 6-11 taking 15ft jumpers? I don’t care if you make alot of them… you can touch the rim with your feet on the ground… get in there!

Blake would make for a good backup, that can come in and knock down some threes, and hand the ball to Roy and get out of the way. But thats about it. Can’t run a fast break, can’t feed the interior, can’t really defend. But….he’s scrappy.

Batum Oh sweet sweet Nicholas. How I miss you. If this team has a libido, you’re like a giant bucket full of oysters, and a bottle of wine. So, Frenchie, get your gimp arse back on the floor Mmmkay?

Webster I love the aggressiveness. But can you bring it down a notch or two, and try to stay under control?

Outlaw I would love to see you and Miller in the open court… When you come back, just remember one thing… When you get the ball with 20 left on the clock, it is okay to pass it to someone…sometimes.

Pryzbilla where the heck did you go? Not sure if its being on the bench or what, but we sure could use the Joel of last year.

Bayless The one guy on the team who can basically get to the rack whenever he wants… where’d you go? Like seriously….where are you? Why aren’t you playing? If I’m Jerryd, I can deal with sitting on the bench behind Andre Miller. He’s a stud… but Steve Blake? Man… no wonder I’m always so angry looking.

Rudy…. dear dear Rudy. I’m gonna miss you when you get traded. You’ll demand it through your agent cause you think you should start… And in reality you would be so great on a young talented team with guys who like to run. …oh wait… nevermind.

Andre… You’re a vet. You’ve proved yourself to be one of the best point guards in the game. Sure… you’re not John Stockton, Chris Paul, or Steve Nash…. but you’re also no Steve Blake…. Maybe Nate has something against other points that are better than him? (cough) Payton (cough) You’ve got the most experience and the highest basketball IQ on the team, yet you’re coming off the bench to run the ‘second unit’ which generally has to take over after the ‘first unit’ has let the other team get a lead. I personally don’t want to see you traded….. but I can see why you might want it.

Nate… oh Nate… How I love the look of mustard on you. Your ability to use the word scrap one hundred times in a five minute interview… You talk about defense. The players from the Olympic team talk about your defensive coaching abilities like you are a superhuman… yet….whats wrong? The team you coach….stinks at it. Its not up to the players to figure things out… Your guys are so young you might as well be coaching a college team. Teach them Obi Wan Kenobi, you’re our only hope.

Nate has nothing against Miller

It was Miller’s starting spot to earn. I’m sure he expected him to earn it. But he hasnt. Blake is giving it to him.

by Kaanyr Vhok on Dec 4, 2009 2:12 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah...but..

If Portland signs Hedo… Does Nate still make him ‘earn’ the starting position?

by tmundal on Dec 4, 2009 2:37 PM PST up reply actions

How's he not earned it? Have you seen his stats in games he's started? His *sick* +/-? His effect on team D when he's in?

Dude’s a starter, and I don’t blame him one bit if he wants out for being relegated to backing up a one-dimensional journeyman like Steve Blake.

by Marvin100 on Dec 4, 2009 8:25 PM PST up reply actions

He did earn it.

Compare his numbers to Blake. It isn’t even close.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside.
