Blazers interested in Tyrus Thomas?

According to Woj at yahoo sports:

"Portland: Since Travis Outlaw(notes) has been lost for four to five months with foot surgery, GM Kevin Pritchard has been working the phones for an athletic forward as a replacement.

That isn’t much of a surprise, but this is: In conversations with Portland’s front office and coaching staffs, several league officials believe Andre Miller(notes) could soon be available. As a free-agent signee over the summer, Miller can’t be traded until Dec. 15."

Agree

"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.

But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

Miller

I cannot believe we are thinking about trading Miller. The only point guard who trys and get the ball to Oden so he can do his thing. I see Oden getting little to no touches if Miller is gone. However on the plus side we can give Blake more time to give the ball to Roy and let him do his thing. Remember he needs those touches. Blah. I put this crud on Nate not stepping up and playing Miller on the first starting unit. I know Roy is fragile, this is his team, blah, blah. Here is a thought get of rid of Blake problem solved, then we can go to Oden more and Miller can start on the first string unit. I know too simple to be tried, do I sound frustrated? Well I am. Bad coaching moves have hurt this team, I wish I could see it getting better.

Seems more likely than last year.

Better trade assets and more of them. RLEC was overrated because as it turned out, no one was going to dump a good player for nothing. The Nets didn’t even give Carter away for free. In the end it was probably KP choosing between Richard Jefferson or Hedu Turkaglu. That’s an easy choice for me.

The difference is that there’s no more free agency this year. Last season it was that or a trade. This season it’s trade or nothing.

this year…we are underperforming. if we keep it up a desparation trade might be on the table. like when utah picked up korver when we exposed their weakness by going zone 100% of the time 2 eyars ago.

Just because we haven't

I don’t think it means we wouldn’t.

Especially if things are still looking down later on, by the trade deadline. Before, we have always been happy with our progress— no real reason to trade unless sumthin’ gangbusters was available (and whether a crackerjack deal was available or not, none of us know for sure, but I’d reckon there wadn’t).

And I know KP has been quoted as saying he doesn’t like to do midseason trades… KP says a lot. He also could be saying it to make it sound like he INTENDED on not doing any midseason deals, to cover up for not getting a decent one done. KP is a smart guy, a very hard worker, and has not established a long enough pattern of behaviour as a GM to know whether he truly doesn’t like midseason trades, or if it was just the specific situations.

I’d assume he doesn’t prefer to do a trade midseason, for fear of messing up the chemistry and whatnot, but I don’t doubt he’d do one if he felt one would help.

I like Tyrus Thomas, he’d be a good backup PF who could really challenge for minutes. He doesn’t play very smart (loves to jump for pumpfakes), doesn’t often utilize his amazing athleticism on offense and shoots too many jumpers, but he’s a good rebounder and a fantastic weakside shotblocker. He is underrated by many around here.

He could likely be gotten for next to nothing because the Bulls just don’t seem to like him… and he’s been hurt.

ugh

Challenging for minutes… no thanks. he either can replace outlaw or not but shouldn’t be challenging anyone else. I’m not a fan of “let’s draft people who can challenge our starters” Either know they’re better, fill a gap, or don’t do it.

Too many jumpers… doesn’t use athleticism on offense…. ugh.

Doesn’t play very smart… okay… are you trying to bring an Outlaw from years past? outlaw will be healthy, has improved, and we DONT need another player like him. I’ll take one and only one thank you.

Good rebounder and shot blocker… okay, but so is Oden. If these are the only positives… I say no. It’s a bandaid and I’d rather fix the issue.

SF perimeter defender, I coudl do that band aid
Fix: I want Miller gone and a point guard upgrade over blake that fits better.

I don’t want a team filled with players challenging each other because that usually means you’re either stunting players or have a bunch of mediocre talent.

You're not wrong

But Tyrus has NEVER gotten a fair shot with the Bulls, and last season when he finally get semi-regular minutes (though still jerked around endlessly) he put together a very nice season. When set free, he can really create havoc on both ends of the court.

I would say he is better than Outlaw.

I think the unsubstantiated tales of headcasery are very overstated and the product of lazy Chicago writers and stupid front office types. I can see Tyrus blossoming somewhere that actually tries to develop him.

Mortimer

by Mortimer on Dec 4, 2009 10:27 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah, Tyrus isn't blameless here

but the Bulls organization has handled him pretty terribly. He can legitly guard 3 positions and is a great weakside help defender. He reminds me a lot of a little more immature Josh Smith (feels scary to write that), but certainly a guy with similar potential. If we were to acquire him and were able to re-up him at something like a Martell level deal, that’d be a fantastic bargain in my eyes.

I don't think it would take Miller to get Tyrus

It may not take much at all— he is in the last year of his rookie deal and they aren’t likely to sign him. And most teams would stay away because he’s due to be signed and it’s a risky proposition to sign him based on what he does the remainder of the season.

How many midseason trades did Mitch Kupchak make

before he acquired Gasol? What about Ferry before blowing up half his roster to acquire Wallace, West and Wally? How many midseason signings did SA make before signing Gooden?

Every GM prefers to make their trades in the offseason to give rosters all of training camp to gel and learn the system, but when the situation calls for it, every GM will make a midseason trade if necessary or the right opportunity comes around.

It isn't so much that

as TT would give us a backup PF/ spot 3 that can really bring the D, block shots, and run the floor. He would be a very nice piece to bring off the bench, or to play PF along side LMA on the small units. He’s kinda like Bizzaro Outlaw in that he brings the D, but just OK O. He would also kinda make Outlaw redundant unless we wanted to play Outlaw at full time backup 3. A bench core of Bayless, Rudy, Outlaw/Webster, Thomas, and Przybilla would be good, but guard dominant scoring wise.Especially if we kept Webster and not Outlaw. We’d need to keep one of Oden or LMA in as much as possible, e.g. Oden/LMA, Oden/Thomas, LMA/Przybilla, LMA/Thomas. Man, having 2 guys that can score in the post sure is nice…

Here is my final take though, I doubt we trade for TT for 2 reasons, 1.)he cannot fill the immediate need we have since he is injured. 2.) He can’t spread the floor and the Blazers seem to place a heavy priority on 4’s that can at least nail that midrange J.

Good points. My desire would be for a forward who is 6’9 250# and can guard larger SFs. But with LMA’s knee contusion KP may be looking for a potential starting PF. That’s where someone “like TT” may come into play.

I don’t see the match with Miller and the Bulls, though. Have to be a 3-way trade

According to Woj the team interested in trading for TT are the Knicks

The Blazers are only mentioned for their interest in a replacement for Travis, and potentially for wanting to move Miller again. The two stories are not related. And Tyrus isn’t the kind of player the Blazers have been trying to pursue in KP era. First class (expletive) behavior according to some observers, making him an odd fit. He’s not good enough to throw character concerns overboard.

I agree with Baddog

Nate should have manned up and started Miller. Roy would have learned to play with him. Blake has played terribly.
Other than GO, everyone on the team is underperforming right now – including Nate.
It’s gotta be tough knowing that if you want to make a trade, you have to check with BRoy first to make sure that he approves.
I still love Brandon, but the hints of prima donna behavior have me worried.
I wonder if he still has the “Stay Humble” sign on his locker?

if miller goes

i’m gonna truly be disappointed that they didnt even give him a chance to succeed. i wasnt a big fan of him at first, but since the season started, he has been the most professional about this situation and has been treated unfairly.

Miller>Blake
Rudy>Blake

yet blake plays the 3rd most minutes on our team.

Total agreement.

If Miller is traded, he got shafted. If they trade Miller instead of Blake, then I will have lost most of my confidence in Nate McMillan having any ability to work with a true and talented PG.

for better or worse

hopefully this means miller gets increased minutes this month, either in as an audition/reminder for the rest of the league, or just because it’s time to try out the newest toy in earnest…

my reasoning for it is basically why not try miller out as the starter and see if it works. the offense is currently broken right now anyways. if starting him doesn’t work, for whatever reason, you try and trade him (maybe brandon bass…though not sure if the salaries work?), or put him back on the bench running the 2nd unit.

if miller starts, nate would have to give him a little more freedom to play his way though…

i don’t see how that is any worse off than it is now.

McMillan...

The longer the season gets, the more he seems like a total control freak. Maybe things aren’t working out with Miller because Miller sees things on the floor better than McMillan but McMillan won’t relinquish control to allow Miller to do anything with it?

When the team was winning in that little streak they had earlier, Miller was on the ball and McMillan was experimenting with letting Andre call the plays and take what the defense gave them. I remember specifically that McMillan said he was going to allow the guys to have more freedom in calling plays.

What the heck happened to Nate trusting his players? They have a rough patch after losing some players… was that unexpected? When you’ve been relying on Trout for years now to be the first guy on offense from the bench, how can you expect to just hand players minutes and responsibility you’ve never given them before and think they’ll perform instantly?

Nate is being way too impatient with guys like Rudy, Miller, Oden and Martell. They have the talent they need, they need McMillan to stop screwing with their heads by jerking them around so that there’s no real chance for continuity.

I think this might be a case of McMillan shooting himself in the foot. He’s refused to sign an extension to his contract – taking what he thinks is the honorable approach – and now when the team hits a spot where they aren’t performing up to expectations it looks to me as if he’s in panic mode and is doing just about the polar opposite of what he should be doing with the rotations, in a desperate attempt every night to find the magic combo.

"She turned me into a newt!
A newt?

by Seijeff on Dec 4, 2009 9:16 AM PST reply actions

That's a matter of opinion.

Adding Roy, LA, Oden, and Rudy to a team by only giving up your problem players would cause any team to improve, no matter who the coach is. Nate’s never had a contender and control freaks usually don’t work as well when your talent gets to a level where they know they can win and feel like they’ve proven enough to have a little freedom.

Read somewhere Butler is on the block and Wiz are looking for PG to move Agent 0 to SG. Miller and a wing for Butler would be sweet.

I'm guessing the Wiz would ask for Batum

but maybe they’d settle for Outlaw or Webster?

But would Washington really want a 33 year-old PG? They seem to be heading more towards a rebuilding direction than the post season

Well, they don't have much of a window as currently built.

It’s not like Jamison, Butler, or Miller (Mike) are spring chickens. Arenas is actually the youngest one of their core, so I’d think they’d try to win this year. If that fails, then they’re more likely to blow things up.

Is it a bad time to mention

That tyrus would improve our defense near the rim? And not require touches? Right now, nothing fits into our offense more than not needing shots (get well soon, Nic).
