Civil War Gameday Thread

Well here is our civil war gameday thread. It has been 11 days of speculation and trash talk between Duck and Beaver fans and that is all going to come to an end tonight. I think we can all agree (sans BRP and Greg Oden) that whoever wins this game tonight needs to destroy Ohio State in the Rose Bowl and rep Oregon well. So who you got? What do you think the key factors to this game will be?

I dont even watch college football

But I like the Ducks way better than the Beavers. Its hard to call yourself a beaver! But also green is my favorite color and Ducks can fly, beavers can only swim, but Ducks can do that too. I cant even name a single player but I think the coaches name is Chip Kelly?—I got that from a commercial while watching a Blazers game! I used to love NFL when I was a kid—49ers were my team and I still watch the Superbowl every year—- but BBALL is all I watch anymore on a regular basis. Most of my friends went to Eugene to go to school so I vote for the Ducks!

for sure... and the fact that Duck fans like to gamble on their team like USC fans.

Although I noticed on Bodog that a lot of people are betting on the Beavers. We shall see… should be a heck of a game.

by Escrote on Dec 3, 2009 3:46 PM PST up reply actions

I feel like Ducks fans are a little too confident. I mean, I’ve picked them to win… but Casey on today’s podcast just simply said “I feel extremely confident about the Civil War turning out as I would like it to, so we don’t even need to discuss it.”

Doesn’t it feel like people are too confident? I think it could be closer than we expect.

I don't think Casey is suiting up tonight...

and I can’t believe Chip would let the actual players get overconfident on the biggest game of his and their careers.

But they are college kids…. they might prove me wrong just to mess with me.

Stanford beat the Ducks using a solid running attack

I think this is what the Beavers need to do to win. Try to control the clock, keep the Duck’s defense on the field and grind it out as much as possible. Ducks score points so fast it will be tough. I just don’t want to see a blowout.

by bow4meow on Dec 3, 2009 5:01 PM PST reply actions

Vegas odds don’t favor the Beavers winning this thing. The O/U is at 64-65 with a +9.5 pt. spread. That’s pretty telling when you’re talking about the amount of money being thrown around on this one.

there were some really questionable calls in this game. I felt like some of those false starts on OSU could have been Neutral Zone Infractions on Oregon instead. Also, Harris clearly had his hand right under James’ shoulder on that 3rd and 6 at like the Oregon 15, which should always be an automatic call on the defense.

Linebacker B56 is stationary within one yard beyond the neutral zone. As the offense is calling its snap signals, B56 feints toward the line in an obvious attempt to induce a false start by the offense. RULING: Dead-ball foul, delay of game. Five-yard penalty at the succeeding spot.

I'd like to give Riley a big "SMH"

Gotta kick that field goal there to make it 37-36. Hypothetically speaking, you tell your players on either of those 4th downs that if they get past that first down line, you let them score the TD so you still have a chance for a final drive down by 8.

i don't see y the announcers didn't like that call

he knew oregon’s offense was rolling a that they probably wouldn’t get much of another chance to score, u always go for the win on the road.

Let's say OSU kicks the field goal

37-36. Same situation for Oregon then, 4th and 2 for Oregon with 1:30 left. Riley instructs the guys, "If the guy is past the first down marker, let him score the Touchdown. Barner then scores: 44-36 Oregon.

OSU gets the ball back, down only one possession (TD and 2 pt conversion) and have the ball with 1:20 left or so.

see

this is why I think Bill Simmons is correct in that teams should appoint Madden pros to tell ’em what to do in that scenario lol

ya but they would still have to score twice

in what was it like 6 minutes and a 2 point conversion. Much easier said then done. if they complete the 4th and 15 and score they go up 3 with 6 minutes left, and if oregon score then you still have the same amount of time as in ur scenario to score again.

The statistical probability of converting that 4th down is far less

than scoring a TD and a 2 point conversion with 1:20 left IMO.

Of course, I also thought they had the wrong play call there anyways.

ur also forgetting the fg

which would have been a 30 or 40 yarder(i cant remember how far away they were). So the odds of hitting a mid range fg(in the freezing cold)/ scoring a td and a 2pt conversion in 1:20 has to be higher then completing a 4th and 15.
also how nuts would beaver fans be going if riley went the andy reid route and went for the 3rd option on that play(which would be punting), he might immediately lose his job for doing that.

Hahaha! I agree with you, for what it’s worth, but I’m not sure something can be statistically less “in your opinion.”

it was the correct mathematical play.

If they make the field goal, OSU has the chance to tie. If they miss the field goal, OSU has the chance to win. Chance on that long of a field goal? Very debatable, probably at about the same percentage as making the fourth down. Making the fourth down was a more devastating impact than the field goal, so it was the correct call. At least as I see it.

It's going to be kind of hilarious

to watch Terrelle Pryor get crushed by Oregon. He probably made the right choice if he was just totally focused on his NFL career at the time of his decision. Although if that was the main factor he should have just gone to SC.

it doesn't even seem like

he has what it takes to be a pro qb. i bet he moves over to receiver in the pros, and playing qb at oregon wouldn’t have hurt his chances of that.

I don't know

he has all the physical tools you could ever want in a QB. His (and Ohio State’s) problem right now is that he played in the spread offense his entire life. Basically he’s getting the growing pains out of playing a pro-style offense now rather than in the future.

I predict that he’ll have a monster Junior or Senior year and gets drafted really high.

i think i just really want him

to fail at qb cause i think he would be an amazing reciever, at 6’6" with that speed and athleticism. I feel that the pros never fully utilize an athlete at qb and him becoming a pocket passer would just be a waste of talent imo.

I don't think so.

Stanford and OSU will likely be facing very inferior teams. USC plays great in bowl games. Oregon should beat tOSU. At least one of Cal, Arizona and UCLA (if they go bowling) will lose though. No way the pac-10 goes 7-0, imo.

For the record

I love my Ducks.

Great game. Hats off to the Beavers, who played very well. Game could have gone either way. Really, the false starts because of the Autzen advantage might have been the difference in the game… that and that Masoli is one tough dude!

Great day to be a Duck.

I’d like to also congratulate the Beavers for one hell of a good game. I couldn’t be happier that my Ducks are going to the Rose Bowl. But for Oregon State to make it such a great game was even better. Best of luck to Canfield and his NFL hopes.

I am a fan of both teams

The Beavers should hold their heads up high with what they do with what they got. The game could have gone either way depending on when the clock stopped. They also did this on the road in a tough tough Autzen.

Please no moral victory bashers. This isn’t a moral victory, Beavs just have nothing to be ashamed of, sorry someone had to lose tonight.

Quizz, James, LMJ, BIG TIME gamers. LGB completely awsome in his comeback. Great story.

Canfield great passer!

Also UofO needs to get some help for Talmage Jackson. Beavs through 8 out of 10 passes to whoever he was defending. This has been going on for a few games now.

GREAT GAME!!!!

Land Rondo.

"He needs to realize that he can't stop every shot, especially from a smaller and offensively potent player. Get your hands up, make him shoot it over you, but let him shoot every once in a while. That was a game that lived up to the hype

I feel bad for OSU because they probably needed the Rose Bowl more, but they have nothing to be ashamed of.

And GO DUCKS!
