Maxey: Brandon Roy's Blue Collar Job
Brother Wendell Maxey is back dropping little nuggets of information about players we thought we knew everything about. Here, for the Portland Sentinel, he writes about Brandon Roy's life before college basketball.

I was under the impression this was common Blazer knowledge.
"Ain't nothin' in this world for free."
Didn't read the article yet
Is it about him working on the docks? Taking his kids there now so they don’t grow up soft?
It was a consistently played story on NBA-TV for 2 years, a few articles about it, yeah… I think most fans know of it.
Whatever has inhibited Roy’s play lately will fade into a distant memory. It’s just a phase— he’s a good kid, a good man, and he cares about winning.
Mortimer
But he also hates America

You had me convinced for a while, Brandon.
You were sacrificing and getting a ton of assists. The team was getting a balanced scoring effort with 5 or 6 guys in double digits some games. It was looking like, in time, the team would develop multiple weapons to attack with. Then, you uttered an evil phrase – “Pecking Order.” And you lost me. Grab a Sharpie and create a new sticky note. The team will benefit.
Hmmm...
The yellow sticky note no longer hangs from Brandon Roy’s locker at the Rose Garden, but the words once scribbled out in red marker remain permanent: "Stay Humble."
You need to put the sticky back up.

How cool would it be
for everyone in the RG to show up with a yellow post-it with “Stay Humble” written on it?
Saturday. Vs. Houston. We. Need. It.

It's a bit labor intensive but fairly simple.
We need a red sharpie and ream of thick stock yellow paper cut down from 8.5 × 11 to 8.5 × 8.5 to simulate a square post-it note. Write “Stay Humble” on a couple hundred sheets and stand in front of the main RG entrance on Saturday to pass them out.
OK. I’ll see if I can find the time. I can’t make an iron-clad guarantee, but it’s do-able. I’ll post a Fan Shot to let everyone know if I’m able to get it done.
and why could you not just go to kinkos is beyond me
Please, for the love of all that is holy, please stop using the following: "Book it.", "FTW", "Epic" & "Fail".
...no seriously--stop.
I don't think he's forgotten his mantra
I think it’s almost the same for him this year as it was for Greg last year; putting too much pressure on himself to make the team go.
Maybe Greg needs to refer him to his sports psycologist to get his head straight again…
Blazers win!

I wouldn't go so far as to say he has forgotten it.
Brandon’s not an ego-maniac. I just think his interpretation of how to best help the team is flawed. There were a few games where the whole team got involved on the offensive end. Brandon’s scoring was down, but his assists were up. I thought it was great that Brandon didn’t have to score 28 points for the team to win. It makes it look like he is having a bad year, and I know some sports columnists have reported that he is off to a slow start. However, developing other players as consistent scoring threats is important.
At first, it seemed like Brandon was OK with how things were going. He scored 2 points one game and spent most of the 4th on the bench yucking it up with his teammates. Somewhere along the way, I guess that changed.
The reality is teams know how to guard Brandon now. Iso isn’t working, and he needs to evolve to help his team. So stay humble Brandon. Don’t worry about your stats and touches. Increase your offensive efficiency by taking better shots. Stop barreling recklessly through the middle like Bayless his first year. Stop complaining about every non-call. Worry about the big picture of team development and not an All-Star nod. Realize that the Blazers are a 3-headed beast, and you don’t have to do it alone. Help this team grow. Stay humble. Don’t worry about what is being said. Help this team win, and everything else will fall into place.
I dunno doesn't sound to humble to me.
"This team is going to go off my pulse," Roy said. "Even if I’m smiling and trying to make it work, if I seem like I’m not totally comfortable, then Martell won’t be. And Rudy (Fernandez) will look like he’s in a funk. And L.A. (Aldridge) will look like he’s in a funk. They have been playing with me for a couple years and if I’m going well, they have more confidence."

He needs
to shoot the ball more actually scratch that he needs to take it to the rim more. (His jumper is just not there yet) Roy still shares the ball like he did last year but isnt taking control of the offense like he did. Unfortuantely for blazer fans you dont play minnesota every night. Your best player has to get up 17-20 shots a game otherwise you’re letting the other team off the hook. Its not selfish its reality.
