Schroeder: The Latest on the Search for the 17th Man
Scott Schroeder of Ridiculous Upside with new details that clarify earlier reports about the players who might fill the 17th spot (second hardship exemption) for the Portland Trail Blazers.
I've received word from a league source that it definitely isn't Dwayne Jones. I did find out however that both Jones and Jake Voskuhl (yes, that Jake Voskuhl) were in Portland Monday for a workout, though Portland had no plans to sign either player following the workout. There was no mention of Barron.
The remaining possibilities include Barron if he was indeed at Monday's workout or former Blazer Shavlik Randolph. Randolph was recently released by the Miami Heat. Rod Benson, the leading vote getter in this poll, has not been contacted by the Blazers front office and is seemingly not a candidate.

Jake Voskuhl? Oh Noes...
Here’s hoping that he isn’t as crappy as I remember him…
52 + 88 = 140% better team.
Please tell me they're not seriously considering Jake Voskhul.
Why not just get Manute Bol for our 17th spot? He could use the money.
Yes! Yes! In the face!
Not interested in a d league player.
Oden and Pryz have to be considered 1 unit to Blazer management at this point for future success.
Covering up with a band aide this season doesn’t help if we have another injury situation at center in future seasons. Unless they plan on keeping the d league player and cutting someone else, or drafting a center.( I don’t see the Blazers getting lucky enough to pick high enough for Aldrich.)
My point being,
In the last 3 seasons, the combination of Oden and Pryz remained healthy all season ONCE, and that was Pryz last year.
Face it, accept it, move Miller and/or Martell for a true nba center.
Bayless has shown he can take Millers role, and will only get better the more he plays this season.
With Nic and Rudy coming back, Martell is the most expendable 3 at his point. Dante has a higher ceiling than Martell, imo right now. I’d like to see him play some 3.
I like Howard and Pendergraph just fine to back up LA, but not for a season at center. If Pendergraph is the chosen one at back up center , he needs to hit the weight room , then I may be sold……
Still sick to my stomach over this season.
Go Blazers !!!!
"That's just how I get down"........ Andre Miller

Jeff is plenty buff, he’s just not very tall and will never be a threat to block shots
What he could be is another Chuck Hayes, and that ain’t all bad
Pend likes to bang and do the scrappy/dirty work, Nate will love him

I won't be happy until we have another Oden/Pryz size.
Imo, Pendergraph is lighter in the upper body than I would prefer to play center. Now we have 3 back ups to LA, plus Travis. I will never like LA at center.

I agree
Coming into the season, I was looking forward to never seeing LMA play at the 5 again. (Even knowing how Nate likes to use “small” lineups…)
No one seems to remember that last year when Oden was hurt, Channing Frye guarded the opposing centers. LMA is a center by necessity, not by choice
Turiaf is not much taller than Pendergraph, but Ronny can get a couple of blocks per game and provide toughness inside. Roy spoke out in favor of adding Turiaf last June, so he’s my #1 target if I’m KP

I'm not a fan of small ball, it doesn't win championships,
if offense starts with defense, and your coach preaches DEFENSE, how do you justify getting killed on the boards ?????
Maybe I’m spoiled a bit, because I am used to Oden/Pryz, but there has to be a 7 footer out there somewhere. Enough 6’10" guys already…….

I'm with you
I was already starting to make noise at this time last year, because I didn’t think that Portland had enough toughness at the PF position for the 2009 post season. Frye and Outlaw backing up LMA…well, they got “exposed” in the 4th quarter of game 4 when Houston rallied from a double-digit deficit to win by 1. Scola, Landry and (especially) Hayes scrapped their way to an 11-2 rebounding advantage in those pivotal 12 minutes—the Blazers just couldn’t get a “stop” (with possession) when they needed it—and after that game was lost the series was virtually over…as long as Yao remained healthy, anyway.
KP, Nate and Roy all talked about improving the team’s toughness and physicality during the offseason, and now we’re starting to see some of that promise from Pendergraph and Cunningham (I still would’ve preferred DeJuan Blair…) The decision to target Hedo as the #1 FA option was curious, because Turk is definitely not a banger. Millsap made more sense, but he was restricted. All summer I was advocating an Outlaw deal for a banger PF/C who had playoff experience (Foster, KThomas, Collison, etc) but…what wasn’t done wasn’t done.
Now my new target is Turiaf, because I think he could be “had” (KP might have to overpay a little, but it shouldn’t have to cost him any young players who are part of Portland’s “future”) Brandon spoke well of Ronny last June, and Turiaf would add toughness and experience, with the threat of shot blocking.
