The problem with Bayless

Although he had a very good game against the Spurs he was play shooting guard. the games i have seen when he was playing point guard, he wasnt so good. that is the problem. i dont think he can play point guard in our system but he can play shooting guard. in my opinion i say you put roy at point and bayless at the 2. roy can go and create his own shot and bayless plays well of the ball.

Roy doesn't want to play point.

And doesn’t have the legs for it. The idea at the end of last season was to make things a little easier on him. Running him at point would be too exhausting, too much wear and tear.

I'll try to dig up the quotes on this.

I’m too lazy to right now though.

get real

BRex brings up the ball, haves the ball at the top of the key, can drive in and back out with the ball. Up tight name calling. BRoy & BRex make a great tandum.

Completely agree.

I hope they’ve given up on Bayless being a Darnell Valentine, and will let him be who he is.

We’ll be fine with Roy and Bayless sharing point duties.

Good thing we have a 2 guard who plays more like a point.

Both players are interchangeable at their positions. Both can handle, both can drive and kick, both can finish, both can spot up, both can come off screens. Not sure this is a problem.

Another way to think about it ...

Bayless is showing he can do all things that both Miller and Blake can do. With how he’s been playing, he makes every other PG on this roster expendable.

+1 to Marvin 100 above.

We made almost identical comments at the exact same time. The internets decided to post yours first. Kudos.

Who cares what you call it?

If Roy and Rex can play together, we have a great back court for the forseeable future. They both spend time on and off the ball. Rex can guard the opposing pg, Roy can guard the opposing 2 or 3, depending on the matchup.

Still on the Rex bandwagon.

Outside view

I think Bayless is a huge talent, and he is ideal partner for roy. He can drive, score or kick, he doesn’t NEED the ball to be effective (and Roy should be main guy w/ ball).

Perhaps problem is the system, not Bayless. A system more predicated on ball movement, and less on a singular playmaker would benefit bayless, roy and portland as a whole, as you have a slue of good passers, but only miller is an actual PG

He reminds me a lot of monta ellis

well pre- we’re gonna give u the green light to shoot 4000000009439988 shots monta. Monta of 07-08. BRoy is a great passer for a shooting guard. Have another smart player @ small forward who can move the ball and he’ll be great at point guard. you know someone like lebron, (no big deal)

A good alternative would be T-Mac @ SF in summer… I doubt he’ll get more than a 2 to 3 year deal, and if he does it’ll be an MLE. Thats assuming T-mac can take a backseat less ball dominant role.

batum

Is a very good passer. The french national team ran him at pg some of the time. I think that a bayless, roy, batum, lma, oden lineup would rock, especially with shooters like rudy, webster, and maybe blake/outlaw coming off the bench.

The time for a traditional PG

has come and gone. with Brandon’s skill set, we need somebody who can play just as well off the ball as on it, and Jerryd is just that, a true ‘combo guard’. plus Jerryd plays DEFENSE!

well....

If you have CP3 or rondo or deron, sure… but you shouldn’t force the issue. A team should always be taylored to its best players. In portlands case, it’s Broy, so the ball needs to be in his hands making decisions…. look at the lakers or old bulls. Kobe/Jordan… not exactly point guards. worked fine.

There is no substitute for great Ball movement

Bayless actually compliments Roy Best

He handles the bringing the ball up and running the break better than Blake and shoots spot up better than Miller. Plus, he is a larger defender than Blake and quicker than Miller right now. I think Millers ankles or something. I have not sen him move well for awhile. He gets advantage and fouled where Balyess blows by and is fouled

As long as Roy/Bayless are both on the floor

Who cares which guy is the “point guard” and which guy is the “shooting guard”? Bayless can play with or without the ball, and we’ve already seen half a dozen pretty plays where Bayless is working off of Roy’s action to get a good look.

The Blazers need a third scorer to take the pressure off Roy, and Bayless looks like he can do this thing.

What's "our system?"

I guess you have to be a one-trick pony to play point in “our system.” You have to either pass the ball to Brandon and hang on the corner until someone tosses you the rock for a 3 or stand there and watch Brandon break down his double team for a last second shot. Oh, and you also have to be moderately slow on defense so that the bigs can get a chance to foul your guy when he gets past you or they get to leave their man open for a layup—making it look like they were the ones that broke down on defense.

I guess if you can shoot the 3 better than any of the point guards AND break down the defense on the dribble penetration AND pass out to an open shooter AND pass it into the post for a layup or an alley oop AND have the lowest assist to turnover ratio AND defend the quickest guard on the other team, then you can’t play point guard. Oh, and I guess bringing the ball up the court doesn’t count either in “our system”—especially when it is a coast-to-coast fast break that only you were fast enough to capitalize on.

Sorry for the sarcasm but I really get irritated with the idea that we can’t fit talent into our concept of what a player should do. If Dallas thought that way, then Dirk wouldn’t fit their team because he is a big that shoots the outside shot. C’mon, now!!!

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside.
