it's not Blasphemy to my ears

As good as Roy is, and he’s awesome, I get bored watching the Roy offense and it does hurt the team as much as it helps. Look at what happens everytime he’s hurt. The other players cry freedom.

Now if we can ever get someone who can mesh both worlds…. Dynasty

by Emperor_Doom on Dec 23, 2009 8:22 PM PST up reply actions

True.

The stand-around-while-Roy-drives-on-five-defenders is pretty boring and unnecessary. Portland needs a stronger coach to convince Roy he doesn’t need the ball in his hands every time down.

by torsoheap on Dec 23, 2009 8:44 PM PST up reply actions

?

Bayless dominated the ball this game just as much as Roy normally does. This win was because Bayless was able to produce at a Roy level for one game.

yeah

hitting the big guy flashing up to the FT line and then swinging the ball, where has that look been all year?

should be getting more FGAs

last night he only gets 3 shots in the 2nd half after scoring 17 in the first half. tonigh he only gets 13 shots with Ro out. gotta feel for the guy.

we won both, but still…

How did you guys win that?

This guy

is right.

In fact, Bayless basically took all of Roy’s shots on top of his own FGA average. If you factor in his FTA— all 10 of which were shooting fouls— you’ll see that he looked to score 29 times. That’s not a knock on the guy, of course. He produced more points than looks to score, which is awesome considering the amount of work he had to put in. It’s not easy to sustain that.

The thing that’s cracking me up is that we have people here saying the offense flowed more, and talking about how much better this is than the Roy offense, despite the fact that Bayless did the vast majority of his work out of the same sets people complain about Roy using. For that matter, he did MORE of it tonight than we’ve seen Roy do in any game this season. Roy has been doing less 1-4, and more work off of those flares from the key than he did last year.

For perspective’s sake, Roy looks to score about 19-20 times per game on average, counting FGA that get whistled into the FTA column.

Great game by (and for) Bayless.

Next step: Bayless & Roy back court, with those two splitting handling and scoring duties.

by Biddy77 on Dec 23, 2009 10:18 PM PST up reply actions

reminds me of the backup running back

who gets to play because the starter is hurt and rushes for 100 yards

but that doesn’t mean that if you play the two of them together in the same backfield they’ll rush for 200 yards

but I like the potential of Roy-Rex-Rudy (the “three Rs” backcourt rotation?) They offer a little bit of everything

When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

by two4larue on Dec 23, 2009 10:24 PM PST up reply actions

I definitely understand

that Bayless + Roy in the backcourt doesn’t mean they each ‘run 200 yards’ (ie, look to score more than 20 times per game— each).

The reason I like that set-up is that those two guys feed off each others’ aggression, and they already have a huge trust in each other. Roy has proven he’s perfectly comfortable passing to Bayless in late-game situations, or even splitting looks with him in those same situations. You could see in the Phoenix game that Roy wasn’t put-off at all by Bayless coming in and commanding the ball, and both of them flourished.

I don’t think we’re in disagreement here. Just clarifying my position.

I think that pairing them in the backcourt would result in Roy’s ppg staying about the same (he’s The Guy), and Bayless putting up 16 or so per game with regularity. I don’t think it would take away from LMA much, and frankly, I wouldn’t be bothered at all if it meant Webster got relegated to being the kick-out guy. I like Roy-Bayless-LMA as our top 3 options.

I know this won’t make me popular since everyone wants Oden to be Shaq, but I’d love to see Roy-Bayless-LMA continue to get most of our set plays/looks for them next season, with Oden being used like Dwight Howard is in Orlando. They don’t feed him in the post a ton, but he generates scores just by being out there on the floor. Oden has very similar talents, and I think he would flourish in that role. I could easily see him averaging 15ppg on limited post-ups, just by scoring as the second option in sets we run for other guys, getting offensive rebounds, and positioning himself well (as he does already) when plays break down.

by Biddy77 on Dec 23, 2009 10:55 PM PST up reply actions

I want to see Oden/Bayless learn to run the pick and roll

Oden could learn to set a mean pick, and Bayless has such a burst to the rim and the ability to flip the ball to Oden coming down the lane. It could be devastating.

by upper left corner on Dec 24, 2009 8:29 AM PST up reply actions

Glad I provided you with a little comic relief.

I’ll do it again. I thought the team’s ball movement looked better. In spite of the fact that Bayless took a lot of shots, there appeared to be more player and ball movement. I can’t quantify it, but I’m pretty sure I saw it.

Your tone could use an adjustment.

i'm sorry but
the Roy offense and it does hurt the team as much as it helps

is simply not true. roy is the only player that can create high percentage shots for himself and hit teammates on every single possession.

by gotyourselfastew on Dec 23, 2009 8:53 PM PST up reply actions

Your statement is true about being able to create high percentance shots for himself but..

it DOES hurt the TEAM in the long run. Standing around watching is bad when you’re on the court. You think Roy is good enough to take us anywhere in the playoffs on his own? Not even remotely. And that’s where it will end every year if we keep up this Roy on four offense.

by Emperor_Doom on Dec 23, 2009 9:32 PM PST up reply actions

"Roy vs Four" is a myth.

He hasn’t been trying to win by himself at any point since he got here, and I’m amazed this sentiment is still flying around.

He hasn’t tried to win by himself since he got here. The guy has proven he can up his scoring with more attempts, and he never demands those looks. He passes willingly, frequently, and with trust— even in late game situations.

I haven’t looked up hard numbers for this, but I’d even be willing to bet that we’re using 1-4 sets for Roy less now than we did last year, and probably by a large margin. People seem very happy to overlook how often we’re using him in different areas now, and mixing up his catches. He’s now receiving the ball a lot on flare-outs from the key, cutting through the lane and curling out to the sides off low screens, posting more, etc. He’s even being more aggressive about dive cuts, backdoor cuts, and lurking in the flat a few feet out of the paint.

The sad thing is that Roy has become a scapegoat despite the fact that he’s out there playing a team game every night, and helping us win despite crazy situations.

Some day, he’ll be gone, and people will realize what we had.

in particular, it seemed based in part on “short arms” which is not really compllimentary.
Now, of course, the good part is the vicious, deadly carnivore, which tyrannosaurus rex certainly is to the max. But tyrannosaurus is the BIGGEST baddest carnivore, more like what Oden will become.
I remmember on a nature documentary seeing the tasmanian devil back off a much larger carnivore, with his vicousness. He’s not that big, deceptively “cute”, but, man, you definately don’t want to mess with him ! “No fear” for sure. Maybe “Taz” ?

Coaching a 9 man squad is a little bit different than a full roster. This had nothing to do with coaching. Pure grit on the players part. The team wanted this win.

by jakoh on Dec 23, 2009 8:18 PM PST up reply actions

What, Nate's a good coach now because injuries forced our team to play a better style and give more minutes to certain players?

This recent turnaround started when Miller was given the starting job, Blake was moved to the bench, and Bayless was given more minutes. Basically what 90% of people have been asking for on here all season so don’t give too much credit to Nate.

by Coastie07 on Dec 23, 2009 8:21 PM PST up reply actions

Um...

If Miller was GIVEN the starting job, Blake was MOVED to the bench, and Bayless was GIVEN more minutes, someone had to have done the moving and the giving. That would be Nate.

I think he has had a lot to do with this stretch of play, both in terms of tactics and player motivation. Bottom line: he is winning games that he should not be winning.

by Roy Wonder on Dec 23, 2009 9:41 PM PST up reply actions

Oh come on,

would he have given any of this without all the injuries forcing him to do so?

by lethaldose on Dec 23, 2009 10:25 PM PST up reply actions

So Nate finally did things 90% of Blazer fans having been screaming for on here all year, I guess we’re all great coaches then. And like the post said above, he had to be forced quite a bit to do the obvious.

The crusty college coach wouldn’t play him all year, then he told him to not touch the ball when he was forced to play the kid due to injuries. Benson’s character made some incredible shots to win the big game and afterwards the coach was trying to suck up and Benson was like “up yours with a red-hot poker…I can play anywhere I want, now!”

Andre's forced shot late in the game was a poor look.

but to be fair, Bayless forced a couple he shouldn’t have as well.

Dre shouldn't be either...

He will get off lightly because the Blazers won, but he played like crap tonight. Bad shot selection, bad shooting, made nothing good happen, looked for his own shot at the expense of better looks, looked old and slow, terrible D.

As great as Juwon’s and Jerryd’s performances were, Dre’s was equally bad.

Bayless is FAR AND AWAY the best point guard on the team. Dre is not in the same league. It is a fact.

eh,

depends on the angle. I’ve got lots of muscle mass, especially in my shoulders, and I have hurt them very, very badly. I got hit by a car on two separate occasions… long story, and had some tears and dislocations. The way Roy fell on that play, it looked like he almost separated his collar bone. Probably just a bad ding, but it can take you out for a bit. Who knows, the lack of mass could have saved him by creating less of an impact?

Finally someone else says what I've been saying since last year

3 guard rotation: Rudy (30 min/game), Roy (36 min/game), Bayless (30 min/game)….I’m pretty sure both Rudy and Bayless can give you in the neighborhood of 12-15 pts, 3 rebounds, 3 assists per game given those kind of minutes consistently (and I might even be shortchanging them a bit).

Yeah we suck with Miller starting.

Record with Miller Starting: 11-2
Record without Miller Starting: 7-10

Yeah, let’s not give Andre any credit here and trade him. I mean it must all be pure coincidence that we win when he starts right? He couldn’t make our whole team play better or anything right? Not really sure why he doesn’t get any credit here.

by Coastie07 on Dec 23, 2009 8:32 PM PST up reply actions

What? At the 2 like tonight?

Or at the 1 and move Miller to the bench and watch us lose again. Don’t kid yourself, we win with Andre starting at pg and Bayless excels at playing the position he did tonight. PG is a completely different responsibility that Andre excels at, always has and still does.

by Coastie07 on Dec 23, 2009 8:48 PM PST up reply actions

Its obvious that the starting point guard doesnt matter. Nate will play Blake and Bayless down the stretch now.

Keep the faith.

by fajunga on Dec 23, 2009 8:54 PM PST up reply actions

Did you not watch tonight's game or the Miami game?

Guess not. And the starting point guard sure has mattered so far. We are 11-2 with Miller starting and 7-10 without him starting. I’d say that shows it matters a little.

by Coastie07 on Dec 23, 2009 9:03 PM PST up reply actions

That's really a meaningless stat

Even though you posted it twice.

Unless you’re going to look at which teams we were playing in each of those wins and losses, and how many minutes and the rest of the box score. For all we know, Dre started, played 8 minutes and scored 4 points, while Blake came off the bench, played 32 mintues and scored 17 with 8 assists.

by superfly05 on Dec 23, 2009 10:06 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah you're right, win-loss record is a completely meaningless stat.

First off, you’re example of a Blake stat line of 17 points and 8 assists makes your post a complete joke. Secondly, if you want to include which teams we were playing then that makes my point even stronger, 4-1 since Miller was put back in the starting spot against our toughest stretch of games yet. Third, the starting pg sets the whole flow and game plan for the entire game so it is a little important who starts. And fourth, obviously 11-2 versus 7-10 is a big enough difference to guess when our team was playing better. But of course you can stay in denial and think it’s all coincidence, even though his whole career opposes this opinion.

by Coastie07 on Dec 23, 2009 10:28 PM PST up reply actions

Bayless starting we are undefeated.

Already we haven’t lost a game with him starting.

by lethaldose on Dec 23, 2009 10:39 PM PST up reply actions

Wow!

You took a sample size of one game and I used the whole season. Not quite the same.

by Coastie07 on Dec 24, 2009 8:17 AM PST up reply actions

Maybe half that was sarcasm.

But time will tell wont it. I do think Miller starting is a meaningless stat if you are tagging that to wins since in many of those he played very little in the fourth quarter. But no one should argue Blake is better than Miller. I would argue Bayless is better though…

by lethaldose on Dec 24, 2009 5:56 PM PST up reply actions

have you ever been to Hawaii?

because if you haven’t I can’t wait until “Tom” shows up

Miller has the reputation of making his teammates better, and I’ve been looking forward to seeing how he’d do with Portland’s system since last July. I advocated starting him since camp (mostly because of Oden) and even the “3-guard” starting lineup went 7-2 back in November against some low-caliber competition. I don’t know how much of a future Andre has with the Blazers, but if he can teach Roy/Bayless how to thread the needle with entry passes while he’s around, it will pay dividends for years to come

When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

by two4larue on Dec 23, 2009 10:41 PM PST up reply actions

Brandon Roy started in every one of our losses

And we won the only game he sat out.

Oh, and my Blake example is what’s called hyperbole, look it up. And you could say the recent schedule and record makes your point stronger, and I could say BRoy averaged over 28ppg over that stretch, which was probably more important to those wins that whether or not Miller started.

Look, I agree Miller should start, I just think your rationale is lightweight.

by superfly05 on Dec 24, 2009 3:51 AM PST up reply actions

My rationale is very clear. We win with Miller starting. Shouldn't be surprising to anyone who has watched Miller before this season though.

Blake’s stat line example is way past the point of exaggeration, maybe you should look up hyperbole and how to use it correctly. BRoy’s boost in ppg came with Miller starting and again only backs up my point that our team plays better with Miller starting. While you used 1 game w/out Roy as a point to discredit mine, I used the whole season which has plenty of games to show a legit comparison of the Blazers with and without Miller starting. Please make a real discredit to my point of how our TEAM plays better with Miller starting rather than making meaningless jokes, or I guess what you might call “hyperbole.”

by Coastie07 on Dec 24, 2009 8:56 AM PST up reply actions

It's not past the point of exaggeration at all

This season alone, Blake has had a 17 point game and a 7 assist game. sure he’s not going to do that night in and night out, and probably not both in the same night, but it’s hardly an unrealistic exaggeration, especially when I said plainly that it was hyperbole.

My point was simply that you were making a fairly sweeping statement about two particular individuals with a broad team stat.

Would you rather have Zach Randolph back in place of BRoy? Zack crushes Roy in stats.

Relax, man.

by superfly05 on Dec 24, 2009 12:03 PM PST up reply actions

5 guards, 4 are decent/good and 1 is great

even though Roy can play some 3 there won’t be enough minutes to go around when Rudy gets back

take your pick, either Blake or Miller for a big man. KP’s gotta hope that enother team’s starting PG goes down, then he can make the best deal he can

either that, or Nate will play 4 guard lineups

When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

by two4larue on Dec 23, 2009 8:48 PM PST up reply actions

You are delusional if you think it's pure coincidence.

Our team plays not just better, but obviously a lot better when he starts. Not just in record, but also if you watch the team play. It’s been a different team. And guess what, a point guard is supposed to change how a team plays together, that’s their job. Looks like he’s doing a decent job.

by Coastie07 on Dec 23, 2009 10:20 PM PST up reply actions

You dont win in the first 10 minutes of a game.

More like the last 5 or 6. How many times has Miller been in at the end of all those games we squeaked out wins in?

by lethaldose on Dec 23, 2009 10:41 PM PST up reply actions

Games are 48 minutes, not 5 to 6

You have to be set up with a chance to win in that first 42 minutes too and how you start the game extremely influences the outcome. Your starters, especially the pg, help dictate how the game is going to be played on a team level. And Andre has been in the game at the end his whole career by the way and done very well. Not to mention, we lost the Orlando game as soon as he was taken out and then won the Miami game at the end when he was kept in.

Obviously we need to give the kid a few more games but wow, tonight’s game was a huge test and he played with such maturity. Bayless has a real opportunity to be our own Aaron Brooks, carving defenses up. What do you guys think about that? while the team is winning, sure

but I suspect Miller wouldn’t take too kindly watching the Blazers struggle down the stretch of games while seated on the bench. He’s used to be in there in the 4th quarter while the game’s in doubt.

I’m pretty sure that this reduced role isn’t what he thought he was signing up for last July…sure, he’s back in the starting lineup, but if he’s only playing the last couple seconds of close games, that’s not the same thing as “finishing”

If we trade Miller, we won't go .500 the rest of the way. Book it.

We win and play better as a team when he starts, which I guess goes unseen here. All I read about is his bad jumper. I’ll take the 11-2 when he starts over the 7-10 when he doesn’t though.

Who would have EVER thought that Juwan Howard would have been the most important offseason acquisition? And yet…here we are. You can’t tell me that Howard isn’t stepping up in a HUGE way right now.

by emc503 on Dec 23, 2009 9:39 PM PST reply actions

Biggest acquisition for the Blazers, I mean. Does this prove that KP is the savviest GM ever? Or that he can magically give every gigantic, black, evil looking rain cloud the most brilliant silver lining? Or that he’s absurdly lucky. Even when he’s unlucky.

Pendergraph = Young Pryzbilla?

He looks raw and young out there but he seems to have that same attitude that Joel brings to the team. We need somebody to do the dirty work, who won’t back down and heck, didn’t Jeff get his first T in only his second game? Other than Joel how many Blazers push back hard enough to draw the whistle?

This team needs some grit and toughness, without Joel this might be the guy to bring it every night.

WOW!

What a game. Bayless was spectacular. Where did he get that jump shot from? I keep thinking it’s a fluke but he keeps hitting it!

Howard played smart, veteran ball. Flashing to the foul line, hitting jumpers, grabbing boards, rotating on D. I never thought i would ‘enjoy’ watching him play but i sure did. The offense seemed to flow something different.
