The Remedy: the post-pryzbilla/oden plan
Assuming that Joel and Greg are done for the season (Joel's injury definitely looked bad enough), the Blazers are probably going to do some shopping for another big man. My suggestion is Marcin Gortat. The rumor mills around the web have been saying that Gortat and Bass are both possibly available, and I urge the Blazers do go after either. Both players are big enough and have enough talent to fill that spot, and we have enough people at that position to make it work.
The next step, which is in fact part of the first, is a trade. We need to get rid of Steve Blake. It is not that I think that Blake is a bad player, but rather that Andre Miller needs to know that he is starting point guard, and Jerryd Bayless needs minutes. Since the recent string of injuries and Jerryd's increased playing time, Blake has been looking more and more complacent. His numbers are down, and he does not look like the 13 assists in one quarter Steve Blake of last year. Miller needs to be comfortable as a starter and someone with consistent minutes, and Bayless needs the minutes to develop into a potentially great NBA point guard.
The next step is also very similar to the previous. In order to get Gortat or Bass, we will need to give up more than just Blake. I suggest Travis Outlaw. I have always loved Trav, and have never really wanted to see him traded, but we are now in dire straits and something needs to be done. Another upside of trading Travis is that it will solve a lot of the chemistry issues that are sure to arise when we are back at full strength with Batum and Rudy. In my opinion, they both should get more playing time than Outlaw, because they both have such great potential. Batum specifcally is someone the Blazers need to develope. In all honesty, I think that Rudy will be gone soon (not enough PT behind Roy and possibly Bayless), but Batum is someone I hope the Blazers hold on to. His defense is impeccable, is athleticism is freakish, and his offensive game is rapidly improving. He may have the highest ceiling of anyone on the team (besides maybe Oden). I love Outlaw, but we need help, and we really do not need chemistry issues when people get back. We will surely need a late season push to compensate for our less-than-spectacular start of the season (and the potential extra losses that will probably happen because of the injuries), and having players confused about their roles and wanting more playing time is not what we need.
Lastly, I think we need to revamp the offense. I am not going to go in depth with this one, because it has been covered extensively recently, but in short, we need more inside plays, more movement, and less dependence on Roy.
The season just got really interesting, and I hope the Blazers will respond. Honestly, even if we make no trades and everything stays as it is, we may indeed still make the playoffs. This team knows how to play together, and barring any new injuries, they can definitely pull it together and get back on track.
In summation, somehow get Gortat/Bass, trade Blake and Outlaw, give Bayless the minutes he deserves, implement a more team-orieanted offense, and STAY HEALTHY.
Hum now Blazers, we got this.

Would you have done this if Oden & everybody else had never gotten hurt?
In Bayless I trust.

not Gortat
but I was all for dealing Travis for a veteran 4/5, since last Feb
coulda/woulda come in handy, eh?

I would not have traded for Gortat or Bass
but yes I have been thinking this all year. I think it is clear that some people are going to want more minutes, and some people who have those minutes right now need to give them up (read, Blake and Bayless, Outlaw/Martell and Batum).
Do you not agree?
remember
when looking for guys to pick up, don’t trade away our future for just this year. we are not going to win a title this year anyway and with joel out playoffs don’t look very good right now, maybe we get the 8th or 7th seed at best

I did not realize that Steve Blake was our future…
I agree
this is a great plan
we NEED a guy like gortat
and there is only one like him
Rip City. can't be stopped. twenty-ten.
I think it would take more than Blake and Outlaw to get Gortat.
He’s pretty desirable.
Oden fan for life
they need a temporary PG though
White Chocolate is starting for them. Throw in a rookie if we need to.
Where do they come up with the other two spots for the trade?
When you find a big kettle of crazy, it's best not to stir it!
The Magic are on the record
As saying they don’t want to trade Gortat, he is their Dwight Howard insurance. While I doubt he is untouchable, I’d bet the Magic would AT LEAST want Rudy in return, at which point such a deal becomes sketchy

Why trade?
This season is an absolute wreck of injuries already.
This is not the time to make stupid short-term moves to sacrifice your future.
Need a big body to fill in? How about that Pendergraph kid who just got activated? Get him some minutes and experience so he’s ready to help next year when it matters!

I don't see how trading either of them is stupid
I explained why I thought they needed to be gone regardless of the injuries..
Sorry, I was really speaking more in general.
I didn’t mean to imply that these specific moves were stupid.
I’m just extremely leery of any trade scenarios right now. Other teams are going to see our situation, and think they can take advantage of us being desperate for a big man and try to low ball us.
I seriously doubt we could actually get the players you’re suggesting, however, for the ones you’re suggesting we dangle. Especially given Travis could never pass a physical right now.
Portland Trail Blazers, Future World Champions 2010-2021.
You've got two competing efforts here
Making a quick trade for Gortat is a move to keep fighting this season.
Trading Outlaw to play guys with “more potential” is a move to give up on this season.
Either way, I hope they consider their options carefully rather than making a knee-jerk swap.
Why sacrifice so much (Outlaw, could care less about Blake) to save this season?
In my opinion, who cares about this season? We already beat some pretty good teams on the road even with all our injuries – heck, we won in Dallas tonight, snapping some kind of awful streak. We can either make a move to save this season or don’t do anything drastic and come back an elite team next year and the years in the future.
I love how we hated Outlaw last year, & now we hate Blake instead.
Now it is a big deal to lose Outlaw but getting rid of Blake is addition by subtraction.
In Bayless I trust.

I like how
Now BEdge assumes we will re-sign Trais despite the fact that the only news article related to his re-signing said we probably won’t
I think what we're likely to see....
is more small ball, with Aldridge and Pendergraph playing center. I would echo the comments that the Blazers don’t need to make a trade for a short term need, and the injuries this year are more short-term than how KP has been thinking. This team will soon be reaching it’s potential championship window…..it’s not there yet. This season will give the team a chance to play more younger players….as if they weren’t young enough last year.
Heck, if they need a big, I’m all in favor of trying to bring Joel Freeland over. He’s already signed….just playing in Europe. If he comes now, he gets NBA playing time….and a chance to show he belongs.
That’s my 2 cents…..
"I'm a man, but I can change.....if I have to......I guess." - Red Green
if this year is about the future
then no one should have any concerns about KP dealing Miller, Blake, Howard or Outlaw
as long as he gets young talented players (or draft choices) in return
but if KP does trade the vets away, he’ll cut the heart right out of Roy and LMA, who are battling really hard right now to keep on winning ballgames
it’s a tough tightrope for a GM to walk…but the ball is in KP’s court

Well...
You won’t get anything by trading Howard, and we don’t know that Outlaw isn’t in KPs plans.

Yeah...because we don't need rebounds or anything
To be an effective small ball team, you have to have someone in the middle that can clean the boards so that you can at least stay near even in terms of rebounding margin. If that guy can even block some shots, its a bonus. Unfortunately, we really have no one like that in our lineup.
And, no. We can’t bring any of our Euros over. None of them is signed to a contract and they’re all signed to valid contracts with Euro teams.
52 + 88 = 140% better team.
MARCUS CAMBY!
We need him!!! We dont need any more rookies we have enough already. Trade a first round pick and i agree with Blake. I like Blake but Miller needs to start all the time and with the way Bayless has been playin he needs more minutes fer sher. Camby averages 8.5 points, 11.4 rebounds and 2.2 blocks a game. The reason why it should work out is cause Cambys contract expires at the end of the season and i dont think he wants to return to the Clippers. The Clippers need to rebuild and could use a first round draft pick.
The Clippers
Think Marcus Camby is a huge part of their success and are also declaring him off the market. Once again, while I doubt this is true, they would want enough to make said trade prohibitive
and do what with him next year?
I wouldn’t be mad if this happened, but then what next year when we have a healthy Oden/Priz? you can’t keep a 5mill per center as a 3rd stringer. He may have value for another trade though………O.K I’m coming around.
Camby's contract expires after the season
we just use him for this season and he goes somewhere else at the end of the season. Its a win win! we get a good dominant center for one season and next year we sign pryzbilla back and still have Pryz and Oden!
Pryzbilla has 2 years left with the option
to terminate at the end of this season. Next year he is due to make $7+ million so he’s probably NOT going to terminate his contract now is he? He won’t find a team willing to pay that kind of money to a top backup Center. If he does then ‘Bon voyage mon amis’ and ‘bon chance’.
Trading our 1st round pick for Camby IS trading away our future. If we don’t make the Playoffs then we’d be in the Lottery. There are some pretty good talented PFs and Cs in this draft so we can’t trade our pick away for a guy that’s only going to be around for half a season. If Camby agreed to sign an extention with us then great, trade our pick to the Clippers and get Marcus. La Marcus and Marcus! HEhehehe! :) :) :) :)
we already have our future with the guys we have. Bayless, Oden, Roy, LA, Batum, Rudy, Outlaw, Pendergraph are our future. W can afford to lose a first round draft pick to pick up someone who will take us to the playoffs. Without gettin Camby or even some other center our chances of makin the playoffs are slim. WE DONT NEED ANOTHER CENTER OR PF ROOKIEES! We have Oden and LA and thats all we need. We might as well keep fightin this year and pick up Camby. I WANT HIM!
No trading for a big...
I say make Aldridge the 5 and maybe it will toughen him up. Perhaps we should also take him to the batting cage Happy Gilmore style.
ludicrous
LMA will be playing the 5, there’s no way to avoid that now. But if you don’t give him some help, he’ll be the next Blazer to get seriously hurt, and then where will Portland be?
LMA, Howard, Pendergraph…as Theoden king said before the battle of the Hornburg “how has it come to this?”
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
agreed I was just joking.
I don’t think the answer is to turn LMA into a player he is not. To me LMA is the perfect compliment to a dominant post player.
Maybe playing Tolliver might be the answer
with Pendergraph backing him up. Who knows we might have the answer on our roster already.
CHEMISTRY?
I like how you suggest getting rid of Blake and Outlaw but keeping Miller will increase team chemistry. You’re missing the fact that Outlaw is THE chemistry guy on the team, and Blake’s fully understood his place on this team and strives to fill his role. Miller, on the otherhand, has been a malcontent and keeps looking to expand his role on the floor beyond his abilities and the coaches desire.
If we’re talking about chemistry, Miller has to go, and probably Fernandez after him.
M, period. Fresh, comma.
yes, any personnel moves will mess with chemistry
but that is the nature of the nba. the chemistry on the team will be much worse when everyone is back and wanting minutes. and what exactly do you mean the outlaw is THE chemistry guy on the team? I have never heard/seen anything to suggest that. Miller will fall into his role once he knows he is our starting PG. Blake needs to go. And someone needs to go at the SF/SG position.
