HoopData.com Takes Box Score Quantum Leap
I've been telling Kevin Pelton to do this for more than a year now... but now that someone actually did it, and did it far bigger and better than I imagined possible, it's time to sit back and marvel at the basketball nerd's Stonehenge.
The stonemasons in this case are analyst Joe Treutlein and programmer Matt Nolan, the brilliant minds behind HoopData.com. Joe and Matt have put together a next-generation box score for every NBA game that tracks the normal stats, the slightly advanced stats, the advanced stats and the really advanced stats. If something, anything, happened during a basketball game, their boxscores now stand as the official record.
Take a peek: here's their box of Portland's win over Miami. As you can see: raw numbers, locational breakdown of shots, usage and other rates, true shooting percentages... literally everything you could possibly want to know about a game.
This information is available for every NBA game that's taken place this season. I recommend you get to browsing.
PS You can follow analyst Joe Treutlein -- who also logs video for Synergy Sports -- on Twitter here.

makes my eyes glaze over
Will you guys read the amazing parts to me?
This is the kind of stuff that keeps people from actually watching the games. – Elgin

The amazing part was the Points per game- Team
It clearly showed we had more than them

Wow, great to have
but when you see it in that format, you understand why some form close to the traditional box score isn’t going anywhere for a while. Some serious opening of the floodgates of data there.

Dave needs to take a look
there is another candidate for the 10-15’ jumper on the team besides Martell….
Agreed. Everyone knocks Miller's 3 point shooting.
But they forget that he’s actually a talented mid-range shooter, especially when his teammates show good ball movement, find him at a spot and he sets his feet. Miller can hit running jumpers, but that’s not nearly as high percentage.
Yes! Yes! In the face!
If you look at season totals
http://www.hoopdata.com/player.aspx?name=Andre Miller
He is at 45% or better form 15ft in…..drops significantly from there
Talking about Juwan Howard, right?
He’s shooting 100% on 10-15 footers.

I wondered where that might go
but Howard wasn’t one of my suspects….
I was thinking more LMA as a catch and shoot mid-range guy

I'd like that idea...
…if Greg hadn’t gone down.
Now this is a team desperately in need of some low-block scoring. All the points in the paint for the Blazers can’t come from guards driving the lane. As such, I’d prefer LaMarcus spend his time improving that aspect of his game. I’m not calling for LA to abandon the mid-range jumper completely, but I think it’d be better served as an occasionally used weapon to keep the defense honest.
Yes! Yes! In the face!
Holy crap. Holy crap.
I don’t think I’ve ever bookmarked something that quickly before.

Awesome!
It’s like going from the Apple IIe to the iPhone over night. I love this stuff.
Buck Williams for the hall of fame
Thank you!
I wish tominhawaii would look at Miller’s stats on this….of course no where NEAR as good as BLAKE’S stats….
Like we didn't already know
but shows that 60% of assists are to jump shooters – since most threes are assisted it does push this number up – but only 4 assists for 14 makes @ <10 & @Rim
Unbelievably cool
I have nothing to add. I’ll be at Hoopdata more than daily. What they’re doing is awesome.

Greg is shooting 20% from 16-23 feet?
When did this happen?

Now if they just figure out how to make the content appear justified left (under the header and over the footer) in Safari instead of justified right, the universe will be perfect.

IMO
Until 3-Pt FG is totally separated from 2-Pt FG it’s not going be really great.
Brandon was 6-9 from 2 and 5-5 from 3. Showing 11-14 really doesn’t help me determine how he did from either category. 2Pt FGA and 3Pt FGA are different and should be reported as such.
true shooting percentage is an established stat
that compounds 1,2 & 3 point shots
by blacknoiseNW on Dec 22, 2009 12:25 PM PST up reply actions
I realize that...
but I would just like it to be easier to read. They have taken the time to separate out the distances for the 2-Pt FG’s so why can’t they just total those up and leave the 3-Pt FGA out of it?
send them your feedback. i’m sure they would appreciate it. Hoopdata@gmail.com

If they had passes (assists) leading to foul shots
that’d be awesome
I'm going on a Dave boycott until AK1984 is brought back.
Thanks for the kind words, Ben.
To someone who asked about some of the abbreviation definitions, we’re going to add definitions in an unobtrusive way in the coming days.
To those having problems with Macs, we’re aware of it, but it only happens on some Macs, and the Mac we checked it on (neither me or Matt have our own) didn’t have an issue. I have Safari/Chrome on my PC and it runs great on there, but apparently something with the Mac is screwing up. We’ll try and look into it over the holidays.
Thanks Joe
