Dec. 22 Junk Drawer
So, topic of the day: What sites do you regularly visit besides BEdge? I get really bored with the usual suspects, and I'm guessing some of you guys do to, so let's collaborate to get some new sites flyin' around.
Four I check reguarly....
1. http://thinkgeek.com - Lots of cool trinkets and gizmos for nerds like me.
2. http://boingboing.net - Lots of random stories from around the Internet.
3. http://dealnews.com - Keeps you up to date on latest tech deals. I think Phil uses a similar one called Slick Deals.
4. http://joshmadison.com/chalkboard/ - Keeps you up to date with Woody's chalkboard from Around the Horn.
Keep addin' if it pleases ya.

It was supposed to be a tribute to another junk much more worthy of praise and adoration
if you actually read the JD
you would know we had just talked about the character limit on the url title
Well it surely would fit in a comment.
So tell us what is so worthy, so we can affirm or deny.

Hehe I love the Office, but not enough to watch on TV every week.
I’m caught up through season 5…I’m gonna’ wait till 6 comes out on DVD to watch it. I hate having to wait a whole week to watch one little 20 minute episode.
Also watched Leverage for the first time last night. I thought it was pretty dang good.

There are some great episodes along the way
And some very uncomfortable ones. I’ll be good and stay quiet.
The view of 'uncomfortable' is a matter of an individual's sense of humor, of course.
If I start cringing while watching a show, I start losing interest. I’m fully aware that I’m basically the one person in the country who doesn’t seem to love uncomfortable scenes that make you cringe.
The US Office does a good job of balancing the humor with the cringing. They popped to the bad side of that line for part of season 5. But overall, the show is still fun.
I love the UK Office and didn't find it uncomfortable
But I don’t like Extras nearly as much because it is ALL uncomfortableness, it seems like.
Not ALL, but a much higher percentage than The Office, to me.
#52
I liked Extras quite a bit.
it was uncomfortable, but I thought Andy was a more real character.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 22, 2009 7:25 AM PST up reply actions
I hate to tell you this.
But there’s a more awkward and uncomfortable storyline coming still.
But with some really funny scenes mixed in, so it’s not just awkward.
more awkward than Michael juggling Jan and Holly, trying to be the dad to Jan’s sperm bank child?
oh boy.
hire tim grover
#52
I really like the scene where, after you've seen years of Michael connecting with kids
He finally holds Jan’s baby and has no connection with it. It’s a real powerful scene for a light-hearted show.
It’s hard to watch a second time, but it’s powerful the first time.
And there’s definitely more awkwardness coming.
oh that was really good.
I feel like the show does a good job of having ridiculous scenes that somehow have powerful little moments.

#52
My wife and I still speak highly of a powerful moment
that you’ll see later in Season 5. We froze when the scene happened and both said “wow”.
How long until you’re caught up? Sounds like you have 24 or so episodes to go until you’re current. Not sure how crazy you’re going with the marathon.
well, I am watching a lot of basketball so that is cutting into my Office time.
Probably by the end of the week, at latest.

I tried the UK version...just couldn't get into it.
just can’t compare to the chemistry you have with the U.S. Pam, Jim, Dwight, Michael…they’s just epic.
They really meshed when they moved to their own stories
Leaving the confines of the scripts from the UK Office was the key. In retrospect, Season 1 is very out of place. But that won’t stop me from watching the health care episode every time it’s on.
Spontaneous Dental Hydroplosion. Count Choculitis.
I like the both
For me, the British version has two key advantages.
- Ricky Gervais is brilliant. Carell is good, but not as good as Gervais. Tim is much easier to identify with than Jim.
-
#52
I like that in the US Office, you can identify with certain traits of different characters.
But there’s no one character where I think, “That’s me!”.
Absolutely
I like that they spread their characteristics out enough that you can enjoy, despise, or identify with a little something in almost everyone.
“Are your parents, like, second cousins who are also bad at ping pong?”
I do like 'em both
And the American version as the advantage of having a billion episodes…
I guess I would put it like this: I think the UK version is genius. Perfect.
The American version is a very good sitcom, one of the best.
#52
The American version is a very good sitcom, one of the best.
I think I laughed harder during “The Injury” than any other show this decade. “I’m sorry you cooked your foot Michael.”
It was a great idea to air it one week after the ultra-serious Booze Cruise episode.
oh man, season 2. My lasting image of the Office will always be Jim stabbing Dwight’s exercise ball with his scissors.
hire tim grover
#52
Legend has it that John didn't know it would burst like that
He expected a slow leak and for Dwight to sink.
So that shocked expression as he steps out of frame is legit.
Oh haha I never noticed, that's funny.

AND
It’s a helluva lot more realistic.
The American Office I like, but it’s more of an unrealistic sitcom. Less natural, like the UK version. And the UK version is fully realizes from episode 1, where the American version took a full season to get good in season 2.
#52
Season 2 is really Season 1 of the US Office.
It’s when they broke away from the UK Office mold. And let Steve Carrell have his normal haircut back.
Don't bother Cab.
Office has sucked since Season 3. It hit the peak in Season 2. 30 Rock is the new hotness.

Office Season 2, The Scrubs Season 2, Arrested Development Season 2.
They were the pinnacle of modern comedies to me.
"I'm at the thingamajig talking the yakety-yak" - Kenny Smith
All three seasons are great. And they're all very different.
There are a few stinkers in the short third season, but it’s still fun.
They even give the show a semi-hurried ending when they realize Fox wasn’t giving them a fourth season.
that is so frustrating… though I wonder if it’s better for a comedy to have a shorter lifespan, in a way.

agreed, actually. I have watched Season 2 two or three times. I feel like I need to finish the Office to keep up with people, though I really dislike some of the storylines in Season 4 and the plot I heard from Season 6 is a bit weird.
I watched the first two seasons of 30 Rock, that marathon is next on my agenda.

Which plot from Season 6?
I actually have liked Season 4 when watching again in syndication. I think it’s getting a bad rap.
“I. Declare. BANKRUPTCY!”
I didn't enjoy it on first viewing.
I enjoyed it more when watching it in repeats.
The Deposition and The Dinner Party, two of their more uncomfortable episodes, actually improved on second viewing for me.
It’s still not as good as other storylines. But it doesn’t make me turn it off.
I liked season 3 of 30 Rock
The current season, the episodes I’ve seen, weren’t very good for whatever reason.

Correct.
It’s very popular. I only know one person who watches it, but it’s basically one of the biggest comedies in the land. The Office is up there now too, it’s actually improving in ratings as the original fans are getting frustrated.
That is so strange.

And, if ya take away his end of quarter flings, his percentage wasn’t awful, but it’s a pretty brutal shot last year.
When I’ve watched him this year (which isn’t enough to intelligently debate his improvement), he looked the same, and he is still fun to watch.

I frankly think the Andre Miller situation is a bigger indictment of Nate than the Sergio situation.
#52
I agree.
I give Nate the benefit of the doubt because I think he’s a smart guy who comes to his decisions intelligently, and my gut says it’s a mix of him and Roy with Dre.
As the coach, he has to be willing to help guide the star through an uncomfortable patch for him, to help in the long run.
If what my unverified gut feeling is somewhat true.
#52
I don't mind Blake starting next to good-Roy and sometimes-good-LMA
But getting the most minutes over everyone was always dumb.
I did like the theory of Miller coming in and being the Roy of the team while Roy was out, just like I liked the idea of him starting but going out first, and coming back in when Roy was out.
It could definitely have been handled better in apparently obvious ways, which makes me think there were less than obvious (but not necessarily correct or intelligent) reasons for the troubles.
#52
I am not quick to assign blame with stuff I can't possibly know
Especially when I can SEE players not doing obvious things that they know to do, or not playing to their ability.
#52
I would be pissed also if I was one of the best PGs of the decade and my consecutive start streak ended so Steve freaking Blake could start
#52
I agree
You know I’ve been waaaaay in favor of Dre starting and getting the most minutes, with Bayless next.
I think it was Nate doing it for Roy, but I can’t possibly KNOW that.
And Nate willing to do that for the star is good and bad.

When we’re not heavily indented, I’ll probably come back to this viewpoint with a few non-Nate related questions about it.
And then Dre makes it worse
By sucking quite a bit at times. Makes me go ARRGH it could be so easy if everyone would just do what they should do…
Roy, don’t blame others for you not working on your game and only now shaking off the rust.
Nate, don’t give in to Roy’s rust and think you gotta recreate last season.

Is it all Miller?
It could be. It could also be the added pressure. I remember Quick saying training camp felt more serious this year, than last. Did it just take them time to adjust to the pressure they put on themselves?
I get the paper, so I don't care!
That would be an appropriate way to phrase it.
Calling someone a douche because he didn’t see him hug Bayless or something is another story.
I still think Thom is joking, at the very least he’s exaggerating his dislike. It just comes across as childish after a while. Give it a rest already, or at least talk about it in a reasoned manner.

Every time Miller started
Nate kept Blake in the lineup too, and moved Roy out of position into the SF spot.
He steadfastly refused to try starting Miller with Roy in his natural SG role, and Webs running SF.
Since moving Miller in with a traditional starting lineup(Web + Roy)
The Blazers have been getting off to much better starts in both halfs. I am curious to see what 82games says about that 5 man unit once they update it to include these last few games…

It takes a very narrow mind to placate some of the very best and most efficient numbers in the league. Sergio Rodriguez is a very good player. You just have to have a coach without a closed mind. Nate, isn’t among them.
You know that's funny
But Sergio isn’t averaging more minutes under Paul Westphal than he did under Nate Mac.

Sergio is playing 15 minutes without injuries
it took the starter to go down in Portland for Sergio to ever play more than 15 minutes per game.
For 80 games ?

mins arent the tell all
Sergio said in an interview this year that it feels good to finally have the trust of his coach. I don’t watch King’s games all that often, but his improved is clearly noticed despite the same amount of minutes.

It's the system
It suits him. Paul Westphal likes him, but he doesn’t like Sergio to play him more than Garcia, Martin, Evans or Udrih.

And I'm a Kings fan
While I enjoy Sergio’s good games, and don’t sweat his less than stellar efforts, Paul Westphal’s system and his temperament is perfect for Sergio. Sergio is not the type of 3rd PG the Blazers wanted for a half court 50+ win team.

Its amusing to hear Nate talk about running more ALL THE TIME and then seeing it never happen because Nate can't stand turnovers.
The Blazers never get fastbreak points or points in the paint.

I don’t mind being slow OR losing Sergio at ALL, but we need more points in the paint, via Oden and Roy and Bayless and LMA.

common misconception.
Those Sonic teams were very slow paced, just extremely efficient in the halfcourt offense (lots of 3s) and very poor defensively, hence the high scores.

Once was a sweet thing, baby
Held that love in our hands
But now I reach to kiss your lips
It just don’t mean a thing
And that’s a cold shot, baby
Yeah that’s a drag
A cold shot, babe
I’ve let our love go bad
Remember the way that you loved me
Do anything I say
Now I see you out somewhere
You won’t give me the time of day
And that’s a cold shot, girl
Yeah that’s a drag
That’s a cold shot, babe
We’ve let our love go bad
I really meant I was sorry
For ever causing you pain
You showed your appreciation
By walking out anyway
And that’s a cold shot, baby
Yeah that’s a drag
That’s a cold shot, babe
We’ve let our love go bad
So sad…

Sure, it’s just straight-up marketing, but he gets some unique material to write about.
I haven't read his blog much lately
And I admit, I didn’t think Blazers Edge was good till Dave took over.

I just always thought it was hilarious Jake was ripping on his podcasts so much (in a good way)
When I always felt he was sorta an inoffensive, middle-of-the-road type analyst… and I saved all my annoyance for Gavin, that I couldn’t save any energy to be mad at anyone else.
#52
I don't think I've ever read Casey's analysis work
I was here for at least a year before signing up, but that was still after Dave’s arrival.
I never think of Casey’s current work as analysis per se… he’s just writing positive stuff about the team.
I think Casey's best work by far
That I’VE seen, was his regular interviews with KP when he ran the Oregonlive blog.

I love the Pajamagram commercial
Women sure do love pajamas!
And the ladies keep hugging themselves, because they are so comfortable in the pajamas. “She’ll think you spent all month planning it” because she is an idiotic child.
Also, the shot of the guy watching his girl model her shapeless pajamas and he’s SUPPOSED to be biting his lip because he’s so turned on but it looks like he’s holding back laughter.

by DrivetheLane on Dec 22, 2009 1:28 PM PST up reply actions
that is funny
and g-love is a pain to pick up from the airport unless you drive a truck/van/jeep because she travels with a case that is taller and weighs more than she is.
I am pretty sure she just keeps shoes in it, too.
it was hysterical
This thing looks like the kind of case a production company would store their lights or boom mikes in.Or maybe amplifiers and speakers for a band. And it literally weighed a hundred lbs minimum. Getting it into the back of the jeep was insane – I cannot imagine how she hauled that thing across Europe.
i know how:
she got people to do it for her. you know that has to be the case.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 22, 2009 1:41 PM PST up reply actions
Oh, right of course!
Thanks for pointing out the obvious. The discrete function of gl(impossible feat) is clearly going to involve external resources.
Did she have a home base where she could store stuff?
When I lived in Germany and traveled from there, my suitcase upon returning home was super heavy because I had an apartment, and could travel light when traveling but when returning home, I was stuffing an apartment’s worth of junk into a suitcase…
#52
I am not sure about the Spain and Greece part of her trip.
I am sure she had at least a partial home base for those extended stays.
But I know she had to travel every couple of days in Poland to go from bball site city to bball site city, and I am pretty sure she dragged that behemoth each time they changed cities.
well played

I knew a fellow who had 18 in a row over two games
He got the last nine in one game and the first nine in another. I think he got 800 in his three-game total. It was pretty amazing to watch. – Elgin
Travis Outlaw, the Funnel Cake of the Blazers
I think an 800 series is way more impressive than a 300 game
That being said….I have had 16 in a row before ….I punched out that last five in game 1 (for a whopping 192) and had the first 11 in game 2 for a 298 game. I think I finished with 735-740 …something like that

yes yes
Shooting one 270 is pretty impressive but averaging it for three games in one night is even better. – Elgin
Travis Outlaw, the Funnel Cake of the Blazers
Absolutely
especially based on the fact that just 1 spare in a game (and the rest strikes) can result in a 269…so anything short of 11 strikes and 1 spare X 3 games will result in you not making your 800

I hate American Express
They tried to stop me from too much shopping (hello, are you a bank?) by locking an account that unfortunately I happen to use with Amazon, and now probably a gift will arrive late and I have to check if a more important travel booking also didn’t go through.
When you call they want you to enter some stupid telephone code that nobody knows (not your pin, something else) and make one on stooopid. Well I can give you my address, my age, my name, my “secret phrase”, my card number, wohoo it might be me. Jerks.
Amex has been great with me

Since we can say the tattoo’s are “quotes”, you can include the first letter of the naughty words instead of using Zach.
Who is JDM?
I know a guy who got the Brahma Bull tattoo the Rock has on his arm, and it is sooooo lame. He got it before the Rock was really famous, but still— the Rock was a wrestler, and you got the same tattoo as a wrestler.

That was probably long enough!
My sister is in La Mesa and Jennifer is in San Diego proper, just over the line from her mom. – Elgin
Travis Outlaw, the Funnel Cake of the Blazers
It was PLENTY long!
Most of my San Diego time was spent living in Mira Mesa – about thirteen years. My wife lived in east Chula Vista, and I moved down there to be with her before we got married.
DUDE!!!
I was staying in Mira Mesa last week. I effing loved it. Why would you live here?

Hell yeah! Where were you staying?
It’s great down there, and I loved San Diego (except for the cost of living and the traffic).
I came up to Portland for grad school and kinda got happy living up here. Sure, the winters are brutal, and there are some other short comings here. My wife thinks we should look to going back down there, especially once my office goes fully virtual later this year.
stayed at my familias
it was great…i just kept on eating fish tacos. i wanna go back and watch a charger game next fall.

It's great to go to the stadium formerly known as Jack Murphy
My dad still lives in the same house not too far off of Camino Ruiz. Good times.
Where’d you get your fish tacos from? Rubios or one of the higher end places in Coronado, Del Mar, OB or PB? My boss has a great story of the most epic steak tacos you can ever find.
hmm
i went to ocean beach bar grill bc people were teling me it was better than hodads and hodads was supposedly overrated
i also went to anthonys in downtown sd…it was a cool place but the tacos were ehh..
and i had one in coronado…dont remember what it was called tho.
what is the story?
I'm going on a Dave boycott until AK1984 is brought back.

hodadies is overrated
Anthony’s is better for straight firsh I think. OB Bar & Grill.. maybe you mean South Beach Bar/Grille in OB? They got killer Mahi Mahi tacos there.
I don’t remember where he ended up going. But basically the story goes that my boss was working really hard for his previous employer right out of college and was told that it would all be worth because when they all go to the convention in San Diego.. they would take him out for this great fish tacos that they serve pool side at the Hotel Del Coronado. But things kept happening. The first day it was like “no no lets do work today and then we can fully enjoy it” and the second day was “oh no if we don’t got to Tijuana today then we won’t get tequila” and so finally they head there the next day but when they get there they can’t get service and find out that they don’t serve those tacos everyday. My boss goes crazy ape-ish on them. The taxi driver says he knows a little place to get some good steak tacos so they go there. It’s like a hole in the wlal dive bar. My boss eats like a dozen of them. The chef comes out and declares him “Taco Boy”. He returns on his next and final day for a half a dozen more of them.
I've been to Anthony's many times
That’s the special-occasion restaurant down there for our family. – Elgin

Not much data so far, but in crunch time as defined by 82games he was pretty close to Dirk except on 3s where he hit just 18% last season.
http://www.82games.com/0809/CSORT11.HTM
In terms of game winners he had 7 as of some time last year, shooting 37%.
By extension Kobe and Carter could also be labeled as the record holders for "most game winning opportunity shots missed". LOL.
Roy should have 8 now with his game winner this year. Maybe 9.
Does the Houston game last year count as one or two?
by The Arkitect on Dec 22, 2009 2:18 PM PST up reply actions
I would assume just one. If it goes to OT, you obviously have not won the game for your team. But his shot against them this year should count as another one, even with another possession for Houston it was still the last one for the Blazers and within 24 seconds if I remember correctly.
What about the miracle 3 game though?
He hit the mid range jumper with like 5 seconds left, then he fouled yao on the jumper, than he went all nutso from 30 feet with .8 left. I think it should count as two…

the other part is where are the shots being taken. The FreeDarko book charted it out and LeBron’s shots in this type are mainly at the rim or in the lane, while Kobe is taking 20 footers.

Those Saharan and Saudian tribes
Were the lanky regal looking types, that I imagine Darius Miles and Kevin Garnett came from.
#52
Could be. I saw a documentary on modern Berber tribes recently. Tough business, now they are transporting simple things like salt for 6-7 months across the Sahara to Niger or Nigeria and make a few hundred dollar in profit if they are lucky. And one of the elders leading the trek said they don’t like talking about that era anymore, but of course they flourished back then. And it was a very bloody business costing millions of lives on the way before they even reached the ships – and the sea travel was dangerous again.
Portugal had the problem that their kings had already pawned off most of the profits from gold, silver and slavery in advance to Dutch and Italian bankers. And as happened in many countries with colonies, the smart and rich people got in that business and nobody invested back home causing their own economy to collapse once the colonies started to fail or break away.
Which in turn gave rise to the more industrialized France, Great Britain, Germany
Who then got into the colony business on their own
I just got crappy news

Remember that their owner died
The new owner might not be as willing to spend $ in a small market.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Or his widow and children are trying to figure out a way to save money for the estate taxes when the team moves to the kids
and this is part of their estate planning.
This should be interesting because with the value of professional teams and US tax law as it is, there are very few families that can afford to pay the tax bill to keep a team in the family. As current owners die, who purchases the team and how willing are they to keep the team in their current location could set off a wave of relocations.
he is turn-over prone thus far, and that must drive Sloan nuts… that’s the only rationale I can see other than it being a straight salary dump and Maynor was the price tthey paid to get Harprings salary off the books
by The Arkitect on Dec 22, 2009 4:35 PM PST up reply actions
This is not a deal about talent, but about saving Harpring's deal that's twice as expensive for them due to luxury tax
OKC gets a great player to back up Westbrook, and a trading chip of an expiring deal later (Ben compares the situation to LaFrentz).

OKC starts to look really scary. One more inside defender in the draft, and that team really is there for the playoffs from here on out.
Westbrook – Maynor – Scrub (at the moment Ollie)
Harden – Sefolosha – Weaver
Durant – ?
Green – Collison – Ibaka – White
Krstic – Thomas – Mullens
They be really weak in the interior
they need another high pick in this year’s draft

They now have a good trade chip. Or when he is gone still cap room like us this summer.
And just vaulted their PG rotation over ours. Hard to ignore that they are up and coming, though I don’t see them as title contenders before they fix that interior defense via draft or trade.
I don't follow college much
I just figure, if there is a guy who will be able to handle Oden coming through the pipeline, I’d’ve heard of him from you jerks already.
#52
Cole Aldrich and a few others might be an upgrade for OKC
Though he is a bit tentative sometimes, and OKC might prefer to close the gap via trade. E.g. they could try to do the Okafor trade the Kings (and me) have been talking about. Harpring expiring plus Krstic plus a first round pick or something like that?
Okafor would be great for them
Still not a guy who can guard Oden, but that’d be a great trade for Sactown or OKC if they got Okafor for cheap somehow.
#52
But it's my concern
As far as how we match up with anyone.
They can get who they get, if their big can’t handle Oden, it won’t bother us in the long run.
It goes without saying Oden needs to be healthy.
#52
I would assume Presti knows very well that Krstic and Thomas is not exactly Howard and Gortat or Oden and Przybilla or Bynum and Gasol. If he can change something about it (and is allowed to spend money, which seems increasingly the case), he likely will. Just saying that “OMG we need to plan for Oden” is not at the top of the minds of GMs in the West right right now, unlike the fallout from the Gasol trade and Orlando with Howard killing in the East. That might change with a healthy year for Greg.
I don't expect them to drop everything and make it like how it used to be with Shaq
I just know, as a Oden.boy, that if the OKCs don’t have a guy who can match up with Oden (and who is that guy, in a few years?), then I won’t really worry about them being better than us since I think it’s gonna be, at best for them, equal otherwise.
I don’t think he can really get anyone who can match up with Oden no matter what he does, but Okafor would be a great addition and make them much better.

I've gone to the 24 hour Walmart at that time either last year or the year before on X-Mas eve, around midnight.
I guess the stock might be depleted, but not really for stuff I’d get. I’m not buying Cabbage Patch dolls or whatever kids like these days.

I go against my better judgment and help some friends out working this week. I almost break my nose… opened a cut on it, started bleeding, now it’s beginning to swell. Then I get stuck in traffic while OSU gets pasted by a bunch of 26 year old BYUers and I turn the radio to the Blazer game.
“it looks like Greg’s…”
I braced for the inevitable… yep, Joel. Yikes.
Then my dad lost his keys and OSU continued to lose.
The insides of my eye sockets started to swell.
Then I hear Joel has a potentially career threatening injury.

in the '70's the ref woulda purposely stepped on him on the way by
""..Sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own . . . "
That was one awful call
The refs actually were problematic in both directions tonight. But watching him run in front of Bayless, feet still moving, and flop down was just nuts. Then I saw the referee make the call and facepalmed.
When my WIFE (who never watches) looked up and said “How is that an offensive foul? He’s clearly moving in front of him,” it makes you look funny at the referees

I think this team might surprise you.
They still have a fair amount of talent, and Brandon will probably try to carry them. He wants to get back to the playoffs.
I seriously doubt we’ll make the playoffs with Juwan Howard and Jeff Pendergraph as our 2/3 big men.

But it would still be a huge achievement, because we are truly gutted.
It would be a testament to Roy, and LMA if he shows up.

I see no way that we are .500 at the end of the year.
No rebounding, no defense, no points in the paint.

Yup, I see us struggling every single night
But, maybe some nights, we’ll be able to score enough behind Roy, Dre, LMA, and Bayless to keep it close and Roy closes it out.

It would require some very unique changes to the system.
LMA basically must move to center, with Howard starting, unless they go small ball and put Martell at PF.
Yeah, I know how scary that sounds.
I like Marty at PF more than I do Trout!
Marty is more of a banger and rebounder and shotblocker, so we got that going for us.

You won.

Charles Barkley was 6’4’’ and a true power forward.
Chuck Hayes is a center.
draft patrick patterson
#52 #88 #10 #8 #5 #25
Chuck Hayes is a stopgap center for a team missing their All-Star
He’s not a true center in any sense of the phrase. He can’t get more than 25 minutes a game on a squad sorely needing his post defense because he can’t score at all. He rebounds well for his size, but not rebounds average, at best, for the center position. He doesn’t block shots. He doesn’t have a low post game or any type of post game.
Hayes does one thing; he defends very well for his size.
You won.
by Roybot on Nov 11, 2009 1:41 AM PST
your argument is not one of position but of quality. His playing style is that of a center in today’s NBA.
Is he a good center? No. Is he better than what we have at center? Heck yes.
draft patrick patterson
#52 #88 #10 #8 #5 #25
he's an enforcer at the 4
he would do very well alongside a player like Bosh. I’m sure he would play well with Yao, but I don’t recall seeing them play together. (I’m sure they have, I just haven’t watched it). A center who can step out and shoot a bit who needs a bit of help doing the dirty work or a PF/C combo like Bosh who definitely could use an enforcer.
You won.
by Roybot on Nov 11, 2009 1:41 AM PST
so you’re saying he’s a 4 who plays with the style of a 5 and needs to play with a 5 who plays like a 4?
draft patrick patterson
#52 #88 #10 #8 #5 #25
not quite
Hayes is a classic 4 as opposed to the new style 4 like Aldridge. He is best suited to playing with a 5 that compliments rather than duplicates his skill set. He would also play well next to Duncan, at least in a 20 minute bench role.
You won.
by Roybot on Nov 11, 2009 1:41 AM PST
Chuck Hayes is a center with Przybilla-offense. I really can’t imagine him being a 4 in today’s NBA.
draft patrick patterson
#52 #88 #10 #8 #5 #25
Hayes is an enforcer PF with Przybilla offense
He’s an ill fit in today’s NBA no matter what position we’re talking about.
You won.
by Roybot on Nov 11, 2009 1:41 AM PST
Bosh is a pretty soft PF...
…I’m not sure why he would be a good fit next to Hayes, because if Hayes isn’t a center then there is no center if he’s next to Bosh. Bosh definitely ain’t a center.
I think, aside from height, Hayes is similar to Joel. No offense, so his minutes has always been restricted his entire career, but a very good defender and rebounder.
Hayes doesn’t block a lot of shots, but he gets steals, and plays very good post defense.
#52
I've been saying he's a back up
he wouldn’t play alongside Bosh the whole game, he would come in and provide toughness that Bosh doesn’t, but he wouldn’t get in Bosh’s way like he would playing with someone like Shaq or Dwight Howard.
It’s never going to be ideal when you’re bringing in a 6’6" guy to play either the 4 or the 5, but you make it work by complimenting his skill set.
You won.
by Roybot on Nov 11, 2009 1:41 AM PST
why does height matter if he plays effective defense at his position?
draft patrick patterson
#52 #88 #10 #8 #5 #25
Height matters because it helps deter opponents going to the rim
Oden changes games not only with his 1v1 post defense and raw strength, but also because he can guard the rim and force players into bad shots or force them out of the key entirely.
Hayes is great at 1v1 defense and pick and roll, but he’s not gonna stop a guy at the rim or in the paint the way Oden or Howard or even Yao (with his tremendous size) does.
This is part of being a center.
You won.
by Roybot on Nov 11, 2009 1:41 AM PST
there are very few centers in the league by your definition, then.
draft patrick patterson
#52 #88 #10 #8 #5 #25
well yes, that would be an extension of this line of thought
Hayes is yet another guy who is playing out of position because of the state of his team.
You won.
by Roybot on Nov 11, 2009 1:41 AM PST
a similar thing could be said about Bayless
He’s not really a PG. He’s an undersized shooting guard. Or a combo guard if you’re into that phrase.
You won.
by Roybot on Nov 11, 2009 1:41 AM PST
it's both
He’s not a true center because he doesn’t do enough things that true centers do.
Things you want a center to do:
Play defense well against other centers.
Rebound well
Be a scoring threat in the post
Block shots
Hayes does one thing on the list well and is okay at rebounding. He only gets 25 minutes (maybe fewer) a game because he can’t play the center position the for 32-35 without being exposed.
Hayes is a stopgap measure and clearly a backup. He’s better suited to be a tough, enforcer type at the 4 playing along side a big man with shooting range.
You won.
by Roybot on Nov 11, 2009 1:41 AM PST
and height is part of the equation as well
it helps in challenging shots and getting rebounds.

Norsky gets a mention in Pelton's blurb about Joel
http://www.basketballprospectus.com/unfiltered/?p=398
In this case, it was Przybilla’s patellar tendon that was torn, precipitating the dislocated kneecap. Injuries to the patellar tendon are relatively rare in the NBA. Blazersedge commenter Norsktroll found five examples this decade, including Warriors swingman Kelenna Azubuike earlier this season. Only once did a player return that season, and that was when Antonio McDyess partially tore his patellar tendon in October and briefly played in March. To that end, while the Blazers have yet to announce a timetable for Przybilla’s return, the logical conclusion is that his campaign is likely over.

Oden had to get screws inserted, making it at least a severe kind of break. Still I would absolutely agree with Carroll based on the data that it’s easier to come back from breaks than tears of the patellar tendon. Though NFL players routinely returned from it after a year, it also spurred the career end for at least Mourning and Damon Stoudamire (a small and a big, though both older than Joel).

And that means we follow up our inspirational season with a bad one, bad enough to get him fired :-(
#52
that's exactly what would happen, I think
Nate would get a deserved coach of the year award, then the next year expectations would be high again we’d see the same types of issues (bad D, no easy buckets, etc.) that we see this year.
#52
that would be the most confusing coach of the year winner ever
All we’ve been saying this year is how rigid Nate has been and how he needs to fix the offense

by Roybot on Nov 11, 2009 1:41 AM PST
In the postgame locker room, Roy could not lift his left arm over his shoulder after dinging it in the fourth quarter. After missing a layup, he got tangled with a Dallas player while wrestling for the ball and “tweaked” it. Roy said he was told it was “loose,” and he was in noticeable pain down the stretch and after the game, but said he would try to play versus the Spurs.
He planned to take some anti-inflammatory medication to help his shoulder in the short-term and expects to undergo an MRI when the team returns to Portland on Thursday.
“It hurts,” he said, “But we have to wait and see. I’ll know more in the morning.”

"Loose" doesn't sound good
When they head for a timeout, the head of the armbone was noticeably lower on that side. This one worries me.
Yeah I saw that
I have rotator cuff problems and some of his arm motions looked familiar to me. It’s the kind of stuff I do to relieve pain.

LMA,Dre,JB,Web and [?] starting lineup tomorrow?
by southern oregon on Dec 22, 2009 11:29 PM PST up reply actions
If Roy is out...
We’ll probably run a starting lineup of LMA, Howard, Martell, Blake, Miller.
I think Bayless and Miller would be an interesting alternative but I bet Nate goes with what’s comfortable.
Is Bonner still starting for the Spurs?
They’ve been having a shooter next to Duncan; Webster can guard him…
I am fine with any lineup as long as Bayless gets as many minutes as he EARNS, and we play hard. Because it’s gonna be gimmick time the rest of the way…

I’m sure this has been to talked to death already, either I’m blind or Mike Barrett doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
Joel didn’t hurt his knee by falling on it. He landed on both feet and he was already reaching for his knee before he fell on it. Falling on it didn’t help matters, but I replayed that about 20 times, and there’s one angle that looks like his knee is creased before his leg folds underneath him.

Right.
More central to my point was Barrett said like 10 times at least that Joel got his foot caught behind his other leg and couldn’t bring it around and then fell on it in freakish sort of way. Which was in no way what happened. He was just completely off tonight on several calls.

I hate the fact that it takes injuries to get the Blazers to play some team ball.
We should have been playing like this before Oden, and then Pryz went down.
So we got Tolliver due to injuries, does this mean we get to bring someone else in?
Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."
More Mike Barrett blunders:
It was not a loose ball that Roy & Kidd were going after; it was a pass to Roy.
If that was a loose ball then maybe a no call.
Roy was pretty much up and down. Kidd was totally going into to Roy and then got his chestnuts roasted.
