vAnilLa JuNk: 12/21/09
mmmmmmm, just opened some fresh vanilla extract. I love the way fresh vanilla smells.
CARAMEL CANDY
2 cups sugar
1/3 cup white karo (tried ½ cup on 12/21/09, recipe originally had 1 ½ cups, I think)
3 cups heavy whipping cream
4 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons vanilla
1 cup chopped nuts
Combine sugar, syrup and ½ of the cream in large saucepan, bring to boil, stirring constantly. Reduce heat and continue cooking and stirring until mixture forms a soft ball in cold water. Add rest of cream and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until mixture forms a firm ball in cold water. Remove from heat and add butter, vanilla, and beat until smooth. Add nuts, mix thoroughly. Pour into buttered pan, cool and cut into squares.
(Or you can use your candy thermometer which shows from soft ball to hard ball, choose desired hardness)

Most of us could already taste champagne so real; the cool spritz of bubbly was hitting our cheeks. But in a moment, real is ferociously and intensely surreal.
Have we all recovered from that moment? I think I have?
Last nights Miami game was hopefully an indication that we’re still going to have some fun this year. The team is going to grow. We’re still going to see some good basketball.
Christmas is still going to come.

If you like acapella music check out the quartet Tonic SolFa
Sorry I couldn’t get a good link, try this sample but wait for a little after the 2 minute mark for a better example of what the group sounds like. Joy To The World
Here’s a link . (Tonic sol-fa) to a few high quality samples. Their PBS special was very good but most of the links I’ve found are so poor quality they’re not worth your time. Try the first 3 songs, (King of Glory, Chances, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen) that should give you a good idea if you like their music.

If you’re just going to try one song in the post, try "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" (i.e. the second link where there’s several songs to choose, 1st link is a video "Joy to the world")
This is weird last night I didn’t have to sign up, but now it’s asking me to sing up. From what I can tell it’s not charging me any money.

So the Blazers were asked about their favorite Christmas carol at the last game.
And I remember Jingle Bells a lot and Silent Night I think. But my mom asked me what I would pick, and I think I said something insane like ‘We Three Kings’, but she said her favorite was “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”

Did you listen to their version - "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen"? it's good.
…and these guys are good. I have some friends who do quartet recordings.
See my comment below, is that correct??

The first thing you said was true; I seem to get at least one full listen of each song. Haven’t tried replaying one yet.
Good, I didn’t want a bunch of people mad at me.

I had a feeling you were the secret message arbiter.

but the RRROOOOWWWRRR was chopped. You get so many characters and then it chops full words.

and yeah, I was actually wondering if yours said exactly what you wanted or if it got chopped because you could have said more after nice but would likely have not had the room.
The message is complete this time.
However, the innuendo goes on forever.

Was that game sweet last night, or what?
All of our starters contributed in a big way. Plus Bayless chipped in off the bench. That’s the only chance we have of beating any decent teams—productivity out of those 6. Until we get Rudy or Batum back, at least.
Who’ll be back first? Rudy?
Keep starting Miller.
Here's what I could enjoy...
Rudy back in Jan.
Nic back in Feb.
Trout back in March
Greg back in early April
Blazers back in the thick of it in the playoffs!

Brandon is good enough.
And there are still enough pieces that can produce enough offense. And then it all comes down to Brandon and how he can perform. We’re certainly not the only team that lives and dies on the skills of their one guy down the stretch. Winning games just requires more and more consisting
ooops, see below again, i missed your reply button.

The scary thing about last night was the 51% shooting and the 58% 3-point shooting.
We’re not going to get that every night. But then again, it was the good ball movement that gave us a lot of good open looks so you’d expect a higher percentage.
I guess another bright spot is every now and then we are going to go out there and shoot lights out, and those will always be some fun nights.
Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."
This is what surprises me about how we play a team like GSW
You’d think good ball movement would lead to great looks to a poor defensive team, but sometimes the Blazers get away from that. The reason one would get away from good ball movement is….?
This team is going to keep us on the edge of our seats in many games again. We’ve been here before.
It is puzzling, but we seem to have trouble with all teams that have more than one guy who can penetrate.
And that just doesn’t matter how bad they are. But I will say this, GS has played some good teams to the wire this year. And don’t let the Boston/GS score fool you 95-109, they were within 1 point (I think it was 1) very late in the game.
I also feel confident in saying that this years bottom dwellers are not as bad as last years, except maybe New Jersey.
Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."
That was probably Cleveland that GS took to the wire. final 108-114
Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."
Yeah, I get the defensive matchup troubles of a team like that.
I just don’t get why our offense gets so stagnant. But you are right about the bottom dwellers now, but it’s also a lot season and I suspect a team or two will fall apart down the stretch.
Right, I didn’t address that part of your comment.
The stagnant offense thang totally baffles me. It’s like a light switch, on or off. We don’t seem to be in the middle.
But I’ll bring up Orlando again. While that game looked ugly, I thought we were very close to making the offense work. It just wasn‘t quite there. I might be on an island on this one, but I came away from that game feeling somewhat good. I came away feeling like we could get it together, was surely not expecting it to be the next night.
But man, I heard Mike & Mike talking about the moving picks by Howard, and they were right. He was allowed to do anything he wanted as far as a pick was concerned. Not to mention he has free reign to whack at least 2 heads before a foul is called.
Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."
He really did.
Although he made a point of mentioning on NBAtv afterwards that Przy was checking him hard like they were playing hockey every time down the floor.
The offense is looking better, but I am still amazed at how many shots Brandon took that game. But I am even more surprised to hear that Brandon apparently has the longest active streak of 20+ point games (10 games now)? Is that possible?
I have to give the refs a free pass on one of those whacks, it was tough to see on replay.
But it was unquestionably a foul.
Come to think of it, if you take away Howard’s freedom to do what he wanted (head whacks & picks) and we might have been still in at the end.
But there was a lot more going wrong that night than Howard. We couldn’t knock down a shot anywhere.
You’d think LeBron would own that streak. ROOOOOOOYYYYYYY
Apparently Howard took a hard hit by one of his own guys early on in the game – He thought Przy did it.
That started a war between them. Anyway that’s what the Mike’s said, I didn’t go back to see if it was so, and they’re wrong a lot.

The real reason Miami lost
They waived Shav on Dec 14th. Losers.
"In order to keep a true perspective of one's importance, everyone should have a dog that will worship him and a cat that will ignore him."
And yes, at one time I did have a supervisor named Jack Frost.
Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."
For merriment purposes it is entirely permissible to substitute your supervisor for Jack Frost, and then vote accordingly.
And then of course, roast him an open fire.
And I do mean for merriment only, I find supervisors to be very tough and chewy when roasted on an open fire, if not done in the spirit of merriment.

you MUST roast them slowly for more than 4 hours.

He briefly played against Beasley who was clearly to quick for his lateral speed, and after about a minute Nate corrected that
No big deal, just showed that Tolliver is no perimeter defender. I would assume he works better with some increased playing time, a la Channing. According to the D-League blogs he is making things happen all over the floor, a pass there, a steal there, a long bucket here, a rebound there. They compared him to Matt Bonner who he was replacing on the Spurs.
Well, if the Blazers are doing things right with LaMarcus and Joel not in big foul trouble, we usually should just be seeing a bit of Dante and Howard and ultimately Pendergraph, and very little of Tolliver. He was acquired for practice and to have insurance against more injuries or big foul trouble. Nobody really should have expected to find a player in the DL who instantly outperforms a pretty high draft pick.
Sheeeeesh, That’s like when we were freshmen and had to play seniors for the first time.
They kicked our butts.
Lets see, my first time on the floor I’ll check Beasley – Right.
Why didn’t Cunningham see some playing time?

Yummy, the caramel turned out just right. I went to hard ball on the thermometer.
If you use too little karo the caramel is like fudge, too much and it will pull your teeth out. I like to lean a little to the fudge side.
½ a cup was just about right for this recipe but ¾ might work.
huh, interesting. The edges where the caramel is spread thin is chewy like caramel. The center where it is a little thicker is more like fudge.
whoasa, i gotta get some sleep.

just jokes that either aren’t funny to begin with or get so overplayed they stop being funny. why do you think people hate my jokes? they aren’t very funny!

yeah? so.
some people think racism is funny. what’s your point?
by DrivetheLane on Dec 21, 2009 2:10 PM PST up reply actions
i know that.
i’m just saying some people think things are funny that aren’t funny or they think things are funny long after they stop being funny. i’m not talking about hurtful things, necessarily, though those can certainly fall in to this category
by DrivetheLane on Dec 21, 2009 2:15 PM PST up reply actions
They could, but they are different.
That was my only point, besides for getting to say ‘words hurt’ again.
i’m just saying some people think things are funny that aren’t funny or they think things are funny long after they stop being funny.
But it’s still funny to them….so therefore it didn’t stop being funny. ONLY TO YOU. People think different jokes are funny….you can’t complain when you don’t think the something is funny that someone else does.
No words.

if you have surgery, you may have to go more than a day without a shower…..
Of course that depends on the doctor and how they close any incision. If they glue it, you’re good to go.

i understand how burns work. i understand what a good burn is and what a bad burn is. i used to be quite good at them. now, i have fallen out of practice so i’m not. i’m not eager to learn them because i don’t think burning people all the time is either fun or the best way to interact with people. basically, i’m not bad at burning out of ignorance, but by choice.

Kidd has, like, more stats than them combined. I got Haslem to make up for the rebounding, but who needs it? He has 4 less boards than Murphy, though.

No, you are right. He is a really good defender. It’s like when you are watching DWade take two driving layups in a half court set and you say “damn, maybe they should defend him” but a great offensive player cannot be stopped when they are on.

Yeah, I don't know why these zacking bedgers act like they forgot about Roy.
Frankly, I’d rather Roy start slow every season and develop his conditioning over the year so that he is in end of season mode for the post-season. Sacrifice the chance for a gimme into the all-star game and use the first third of each season to catch up with the rest he needs in the summer. It doesn’t mean he’s going to lose anything, clearly. Just need some time to adjust. If we had our full team, we should have ample ways to not need him to deliver every game like he will need to now.
I think he is just rounding into form
but he will make the all-star team every year.. unless he is injured.
I just hope he is able to continue to do this with Greg

It could be tough.
Kobe, Paul, Williams.. Reke will probably be in that mix by next year depending upon the Kings standings. It could be tough, especially with how Greg and other’s development should lead to a decrease emphasis on him. But since he will always be the man on the team when it counts, teams will always scout heavy on him so he will have the power to make the game easier for everyone else.
If the Blazers can have a winning December and January, Roy will be on the all-star team again this year.
even rusty Brandon Roy has been almost as good as Deron this year.
Nash, Paul, Kobe, Roy, Williams.
hire tim grover
#52
Yup. Nash.
If this is the real Brandon we are seeing these last two games and we will see mostly from here on out, there is no question he is still an all-star.
Nash is the guy who was left off last year, I think. And he is definitely playing like an all-star now, and he are probably the guy that Tyreke will replace next year.
no, starting next year. I don’t think they’ll give Tyreke the respect he deserves because he’s a rookie… but I take him over Deron.

Economists call that an inferior good (worst example: spam), with an income change you will move to other goods ;)
That’s also a problem with fast food. While not necessarily and inferior good, it’s not terribly healthy either but cheap, so poorer people tend to eat more of it.

If you like snow, it’s a big disadvantage of a warm climate. It’s much harder to get in the Christmas mood when there’s no snow out there, and it’s either Sunny or raining.
Tomorrow I should get a new camera (personal gift), maybe I try it out by making a snow panorama or at least a still life
No, a superzoom bridge camera, so one category below. I'm a passionate photographer, but I don't really have the skills and money to fully use and update a DSLR and lenses every few years.
I used to have an analog Minolta SLR when I travelled across the US and Canada, but in Africa I also got very satisfying results with an early Sony bridge camera.
I decided to skip the bridge camera, I did a Canon Powershot G11 instead
Smaller lens and less zoom, but lots of manual options and raw mode available. Also works well in low light. Really well, actually. And of course, easier to transport, it fits in my jacket pocket.
Those bridge cameras are nice though. I was tempted.

Odd Question?
Anyone else think that Dirk should not be able to play tomorrow night if Carl Landry’s Teeth are still in his elbow? I know its a technicality, but a peice of Landry on the court would be illeagle. Not to mention, he doesnt even play for Dallas.
So seriouly, how much of a person needs to be on the court?

It might be contractual.
The league can’t allow them to play on both teams so how much of someone has to be on the court to warrant paying him for it? That’s tough.

Paranoid by Black Sabbath
Finished with my woman
‘Cause she couldn’t help me with my mind
People think I’m insane
Because I am frowning all the time
All day long I think of things
But nothing seems to satisfy
Think I’ll lose my mind
If I don’t find something to pacify
Can you help me occupy my brain?
Oh yeah!
I need someone to show me
The things in life that I can’t find
I can’t see the things that make true happiness
I must be blind
Make a joke and I will sigh
And you will laugh and I will cry
Happiness I cannot feel
And love to me is so unreal
And so as you hear these words
Telling you now of my state
I tell you to enjoy life
I wish I could but it’s too late
Travis Outlaw, the Funnel Cake of the Blazers
My dad told me
When he was in high school, him and his friends would get real high and drive around town blasting Black Sabbath and scare old people.
They lived in a small town in Central Oregon, only 500 people or less.
#52
I heard the first Black Sabbath record and said Meh
or whatever people said back in the day. This, the second Black Sabbath record, was better, although a lot of it just made us laugh. Fairies Wear Boots? OK, I believe you! It was Master of Reality that really made the connection for me, and after that I was a big Black Sabbath fan until Ozzy petered out and left the band. – Elgin
Travis Outlaw, the Funnel Cake of the Blazers
My friend had a PA horn hooked up to his CB radio in his Vega (how is that for a 70's reference?)
Anyway …one day this little ol lady was crossing the street in the cosswalk while we were waiting at a traffic light….we turned on the PA and yelled real loud …..she almost fell off her walker…….ah…good times

"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
we are 13-12 against teams other than Minny and NJ
We looked pretty good these last few games though— like a playoff team.
#52
And they are competing
The listlessness that characterized the utah, New YOrk and Memphis losses is gone.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely

I can take losing
But one reason I’ve liked the Roy-led teams is that even when they sucked they always cared, unlike some of our better Jail Blazer teams.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
i agree.
the effort was ALWAYS there. but this year, that didn’t seem true. even before the injuries. that’s why that GSW loss before the big injuries hurt me so bad. they just looked like they didn’t give a crap. that bothered me more than anything.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 21, 2009 4:54 PM PST up reply actions
i'm not very good at following that kind of stuff, but i trust your judgement.
but to me, even if the coach isn’t doing a good job, if you’re a pro player, that shouldn’t matter. you gotta take pride in what you’re doing. using bad coaching as a reason to not try is pathetic.

And I remember watching teh Minny game right after that
Where we sleepwalked through the first 26 minutes then finally woke up and kicked their ass (although the crowd didn’t help since I, along with at least half the crowd, was more concerned with Oregon-Zona than the Blazers-Wolves).
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Think of how much talent is injured right now… Greg, Rudy, Nic, and Travis. For any team to be 17-12 against any competition after losing that much is pretty amazing. We had Jerryd Bayless just sitting on the bench ready to step in.

I'm well behind
After week 1 of a 2 week playoff.
Seriously, my opponent had all his players have high point days (for the year) and I had Brady falling flat on his face.
This symbolizes my team this week, Jacobs runs for the most 1st half yards for the NYG but Bradshaw gets both TDs.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
ouch.
my team built steam all season. started slow but then got really really good (i ended up with the most total points scored in the league). so i end up playing the top seed in the first round. And then Brady and Welker have horrible games. Every guy on my team went below their average except Hines Ward. Horrible horrible time for my team to fail. and it’s only a one week playoff. i’ll play for 3rd next week. but who cares about 3rd…..not me.

Although he may be a crappy coach, you have to put a 35 point blown lead on the players. That only happens if the players fall asleep at the wheel and drive it into the ditch…
RUDY > MJ
#52
Maybe but he didn't pull the players
WHen they weere up big. 4 starters played over 40 minutes even though they were up big most of the game.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I dont buy that at all
Playing 40 minutes doesn’t justify blowing a 35 point lead, not even close. Roy has been averaging over 40 minutes a game lately and has looked on top of his game in the 4th quarters. Rose, Noah, Salmons, and Noah can handle playing long minutes.
Plus, the 35 point lead was in the 3rd, usually a coach will stick to his rotation with a big lead until the 4th quarter, when the game is in hand…
RUDY > MJ

looks like probably 19.
Bulls were outscored 33-10 in the 4th and Kings won by 4.

There’s no defending it. But the Bulls players laid a turd at the end in all facets of the game.

The Bulls just lost their focus and composure. They panicked and lost all the momentum. Fatigue is not an excuse.

The Bulls started to lose the lead in the middle of the third.
James Johnson and Pargo weren’t going to save the Bulls. Rose sucked even after he got some rest in the 4th quarter. Rose and Deng didn’t show up when the team needed them. Bulls only had to score 15 points in the 4th quarter to secure the win.

really big win. At MSG (which is St. John's home court). Cornell looks like a top 60-70 team in the country this year.
I honestly think they would finish 4th or 5th in the pac-10 this year.
Cornell won’t be in the at-large bid discussion unless they somehow win @ Kansas next month, but if they win the Ivies they could get around a 12 seed which would give them at least a fighting chance at a first round upset. Harvard looks good this year also though.

you better not be Oden/Durant implying, because that wouldn’t be fit the “safe pick/better numbers” metaphor very well.
hire tim grover
#52
Durant scored a lot, but his numbers weren’t that good once you realize that he stood in the paint in the zone and grabbed every uncontested defensive rebound. He also did not have near the performance Oden had in the NCAAs.
Oden was said to have higher potential by most people, that’s why 32 GMs said they would take him number 1.
hire tim grover
#52
agreed.
Blazer consultant Jeff Ma and Hollinger, among others, ran numbers that favored Durant pretty heavily though.
I’m not 2nd guessing a pick that I liked and that pretty much everyone would have made. The parallels are there, but limited.

the statistics were skewed by the crazy rebounds Durant got in the zone, I would argue.
but yeah, I find it pointless to second guess when everyone would’ve taken Oden.

no, but 20 year old Evans is having a better rookie year than 22 year old Roy

by DrivetheLane on Dec 22, 2009 8:40 AM PST up reply actions
Well, let's be explicit here
There is a difference between joking and telling a joke. If anything, Philthy was the one changing the subject of the convo, and then she started joking with you for calling him out on it. I’m not saying this is the comedy bit that will be enshrined for all to see, but I get it. And it is as effective as a random insert into someone else’s convo could be.
that actually makes sense to me.
i guess if she had replied to Phil with that comment, it would have made more sense at the time, as Phil was having the different conversation. At least now I’ve got another too in the tool kit. haha
by DrivetheLane on Dec 22, 2009 9:18 AM PST up reply actions
hahah Glad I could ellucidate.
And you may have a point. Of course, that is further confirmation that the joke wasn’t poorly timed but may have been put on the wrong person. Then again, she enjoys picking on you more than Phil, so it still makes sense from the P.O.V. of making you feel like you messed up the convo.
those are other good points.
i still don’t think it was that good a joke. but the timing i guess makes a little more sense now.

stats have different levels of meaningfullness between those sports though.
in basketball, of course that stat you posted is ridiculous but in baseball, night games will affect stats (ie glare from the sun, temperature can affect how a pitcher grips the ball, etc) as will the weather (muddy base paths, for instance). so some of the advanced stats, or even the obscure time of day stuff, is much more important. NBA broadcasters won’t pull that stuff out cause they don’t need to. but in MLB, that stuff is relevant, even if it’s not in another sport.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 21, 2009 9:55 PM PST up reply actions
i dont know squat about baseball
but i highly doubt a manager would start a mediocre pitcher who pitches phenomenally in the night time when the humidity levels are abnormally high vs his star pitcher (who has a a poor ratio of cones to rods in his retina so that he cannot see in the dark as well).

Something like “insured rear-ended claimant” or “claimant t-boned insured in an intersection.” Well, last year somebody called in a claim under a Homeowner’s Policy in Michigan, and the person taking the call decided it would be a really good idea to quote the person that was calling, and type the following into the permanent record:
“Claimant’s mom reports her son was playing with the neighbor’s dog after it got outside. The dog scratched the child’s face, so the child kicked the dog, then the dog up and “bitch-slapped” the child."
It turns out the mother of the child is a pole dancer with 3 kids. Of course she is.

the fan shop is horrible compared to the UO and the OSU one
nothing is ever in stock…they always have way too many XXXL stuff, and things are pulled off the shelf way too soon.

So, at least we're not as bad as the Bulls
or something. We’ve NEVER blown a 35-point lead anywhere (knocks on wood).

Lol, Wendy is about the only Bulls fans putting more blame on the players than the coach for choking the lead away
They managed to score under 1 point per minute to close out the game, for which there is really no explanation.
try this again

Which feed should I watch, the Kings or the Bulls announcers?
Going to record it in a few to watch tomorrow.
This might show in one way we are different
I woulda’ said the Kings, so you can hear the hopefulness in the announcers voices as they mount their comeback, and then the joy as the Kings take the lead.
I’d get enuff schadenfreude from watching the Bulls (who we are not) blow a tremendous lead.
#52
Well, I know the Kings announcers well and watched Starvin's video there, so I have a pretty good idea of what that would be like.
I am more intrigued by what its like from the Bulls side.
#52
It would be interesting for sure
And it might be the better choice; my first instinct is just “I’ll watch the happy version of the game”.
Did ya watch the game live? Is it worth watching?
#52
A lot of it can be attributed to Andres Nocioni in his return to the United Center, a -28 in 16 minutes, shooting as if he had something to prove against old pal Luol Deng, though it was just reaffirming what we learned last year: when he’s not hitting shots he’s useless. (again: this is the guy Bulls fans give a standing ovation to while Ben Gordon got booed whenever he touched the ball) And at 1-7 from the field, 1 rebound, and letting Luol Deng completely abuse him on the other end, it was one of those nights for Noc.
I hate Nocioni and I don’t get why anyone likes him.
The blockquote from Matt’s game recap.

depends whether you want to hear the agony of defeat
or the thrill of victory. I would with the happy side, personally…
