mmmmmmm, just opened some fresh vanilla extract. I love the way fresh vanilla smells.

Star-divide

CARAMEL CANDY

2 cups sugar

1/3 cup white karo (tried ½ cup on 12/21/09, recipe originally had 1 ½ cups, I think)

3 cups heavy whipping cream

4 tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons vanilla

1 cup chopped nuts

Combine sugar, syrup and ½ of the cream in large saucepan, bring to boil, stirring constantly.  Reduce heat and continue cooking and stirring until mixture forms a soft ball in cold water.  Add rest of cream and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until mixture forms a firm ball in cold water.  Remove from heat and add butter, vanilla, and beat until smooth.  Add nuts, mix thoroughly.  Pour into buttered pan, cool and cut into squares.
(Or you can use your candy thermometer which shows from soft ball to hard ball, choose desired hardness)

Oh Oden! My Oden!

Oh how the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle.

Tell it not in the City of Angels, declare it not in a mile high Capital. May singing and dancing not be heard in Alamo City.

Most of us could already taste champagne so real; the cool spritz of bubbly was hitting our cheeks. But in a moment, real is ferociously and intensely surreal.

Have we all recovered from that moment? I think I have?

Last nights Miami game was hopefully an indication that we’re still going to have some fun this year. The team is going to grow. We’re still going to see some good basketball.

Christmas is still going to come.

Sorry I couldn’t get a good link, try this sample but wait for a little after the 2 minute mark for a better example of what the group sounds like. Joy To The World

If you’re just going to try one song in the post, try "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" (i.e. the second link where there’s several songs to choose, 1st link is a video "Joy to the world")

This is weird last night I didn’t have to sign up, but now it’s asking me to sing up. From what I can tell it’s not charging me any money.

So the Blazers were asked about their favorite Christmas carol at the last game.

And I remember Jingle Bells a lot and Silent Night I think. But my mom asked me what I would pick, and I think I said something insane like ‘We Three Kings’, but she said her favorite was “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”

Did you listen to their version - "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen"? it's good.

…and these guys are good. I have some friends who do quartet recordings.
See my comment below, is that correct??

Was that game sweet last night, or what?

All of our starters contributed in a big way. Plus Bayless chipped in off the bench. That’s the only chance we have of beating any decent teams—productivity out of those 6. Until we get Rudy or Batum back, at least.

Who’ll be back first? Rudy?

Brandon is good enough.

And there are still enough pieces that can produce enough offense. And then it all comes down to Brandon and how he can perform. We’re certainly not the only team that lives and dies on the skills of their one guy down the stretch. Winning games just requires more and more consisting

The scary thing about last night was the 51% shooting and the 58% 3-point shooting.

We’re not going to get that every night. But then again, it was the good ball movement that gave us a lot of good open looks so you’d expect a higher percentage.
I guess another bright spot is every now and then we are going to go out there and shoot lights out, and those will always be some fun nights.

This is what surprises me about how we play a team like GSW

You’d think good ball movement would lead to great looks to a poor defensive team, but sometimes the Blazers get away from that. The reason one would get away from good ball movement is….?

This team is going to keep us on the edge of our seats in many games again. We’ve been here before.

by idoltime on Dec 21, 2009 7:00 AM PST up reply actions

It is puzzling, but we seem to have trouble with all teams that have more than one guy who can penetrate.

And that just doesn’t matter how bad they are. But I will say this, GS has played some good teams to the wire this year. And don’t let the Boston/GS score fool you 95-109, they were within 1 point (I think it was 1) very late in the game.
I also feel confident in saying that this years bottom dwellers are not as bad as last years, except maybe New Jersey.

by Blazer1342 on Dec 21, 2009 7:15 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah, I get the defensive matchup troubles of a team like that.

I just don’t get why our offense gets so stagnant. But you are right about the bottom dwellers now, but it’s also a lot season and I suspect a team or two will fall apart down the stretch.

by idoltime on Dec 21, 2009 7:18 AM PST up reply actions

Right, I didn’t address that part of your comment.

The stagnant offense thang totally baffles me. It’s like a light switch, on or off. We don’t seem to be in the middle.
But I’ll bring up Orlando again. While that game looked ugly, I thought we were very close to making the offense work. It just wasn‘t quite there. I might be on an island on this one, but I came away from that game feeling somewhat good. I came away feeling like we could get it together, was surely not expecting it to be the next night.
But man, I heard Mike & Mike talking about the moving picks by Howard, and they were right. He was allowed to do anything he wanted as far as a pick was concerned. Not to mention he has free reign to whack at least 2 heads before a foul is called.

Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."

by Blazer1342 on Dec 21, 2009 7:29 AM PST up reply actions

He really did.

Although he made a point of mentioning on NBAtv afterwards that Przy was checking him hard like they were playing hockey every time down the floor.

The offense is looking better, but I am still amazed at how many shots Brandon took that game. But I am even more surprised to hear that Brandon apparently has the longest active streak of 20+ point games (10 games now)? Is that possible?

by idoltime on Dec 21, 2009 7:36 AM PST up reply actions

I have to give the refs a free pass on one of those whacks, it was tough to see on replay.

But it was unquestionably a foul.
Come to think of it, if you take away Howard’s freedom to do what he wanted (head whacks & picks) and we might have been still in at the end.
But there was a lot more going wrong that night than Howard. We couldn’t knock down a shot anywhere.

You’d think LeBron would own that streak. ROOOOOOOYYYYYYY

Apparently Howard took a hard hit by one of his own guys early on in the game – He thought Przy did it.
That started a war between them. Anyway that’s what the Mike’s said, I didn’t go back to see if it was so, and they’re wrong a lot.

by DrivetheLane on Dec 21, 2009 7:49 AM PST up reply actions

He briefly played against Beasley who was clearly to quick for his lateral speed, and after about a minute Nate corrected that

No big deal, just showed that Tolliver is no perimeter defender. I would assume he works better with some increased playing time, a la Channing. According to the D-League blogs he is making things happen all over the floor, a pass there, a steal there, a long bucket here, a rebound there. They compared him to Matt Bonner who he was replacing on the Spurs.

Well, if the Blazers are doing things right with LaMarcus and Joel not in big foul trouble, we usually should just be seeing a bit of Dante and Howard and ultimately Pendergraph, and very little of Tolliver. He was acquired for practice and to have insurance against more injuries or big foul trouble. Nobody really should have expected to find a player in the DL who instantly outperforms a pretty high draft pick.

Yummy, the caramel turned out just right. I went to hard ball on the thermometer.

If you use too little karo the caramel is like fudge, too much and it will pull your teeth out. I like to lean a little to the fudge side.
½ a cup was just about right for this recipe but ¾ might work.
huh, interesting. The edges where the caramel is spread thin is chewy like caramel. The center where it is a little thicker is more like fudge.

whoasa, i gotta get some sleep.

Troy “Rebounding Big Man” Murphy has 15 more boards than Jason Kidd, and Kidd beats him soundly in every other stat LOL.

Lou “Glass Jaw” Williams is ranked 110…. LOLOLOLOLOLAUGHOUTLOUDERS.

Kidd has, like, more stats than them combined. I got Haslem to make up for the rebounding, but who needs it? He has 4 less boards than Murphy, though.

Yeah, I don't know why these zacking bedgers act like they forgot about Roy.

Frankly, I’d rather Roy start slow every season and develop his conditioning over the year so that he is in end of season mode for the post-season. Sacrifice the chance for a gimme into the all-star game and use the first third of each season to catch up with the rest he needs in the summer. It doesn’t mean he’s going to lose anything, clearly. Just need some time to adjust. If we had our full team, we should have ample ways to not need him to deliver every game like he will need to now.

by idoltime on Dec 21, 2009 1:37 PM PST up reply actions

by GreatOden'sRaven on Dec 21, 2009 1:43 PM PST up reply actions

It could be tough.

Kobe, Paul, Williams.. Reke will probably be in that mix by next year depending upon the Kings standings. It could be tough, especially with how Greg and other’s development should lead to a decrease emphasis on him. But since he will always be the man on the team when it counts, teams will always scout heavy on him so he will have the power to make the game easier for everyone else.

If the Blazers can have a winning December and January, Roy will be on the all-star team again this year.

If this is the real Brandon we are seeing these last two games and we will see mostly from here on out, there is no question he is still an all-star.

Nash is the guy who was left off last year, I think. And he is definitely playing like an all-star now, and he are probably the guy that Tyreke will replace next year.

but this year hasnt’ been a great movie year and the 10 picture nominations will water everything down. I doubt Up in the Air will win though. I have a feeling the winner hasn’t been released yet. something will come out of nowhere to win.

of those movies

Million Dollar Baby was a worthy winner. Shakespeare in Love was a fantastic movie, but it should not have beaten SPR.

DDL was the last great oscar winner in the best actor category. Most these days are just impersonations of famous people.

Saving Private Ryan > Shakespeare in Love
Ray > Million Dollar Baby

i don't agree about Ray.

Ray was a very conventional biopic. I thought Walk the Line was better than Ray.

That year with GnNGl wasn’t a very good year. Of those nominees, I probably liked Capote the best. Brokeback could have won on the strength of the acting.

I agree about Straithaim. That was a great performance.

Economists call that an inferior good (worst example: spam), with an income change you will move to other goods ;)

That’s also a problem with fast food. While not necessarily and inferior good, it’s not terribly healthy either but cheap, so poorer people tend to eat more of it.

If you like snow, it’s a big disadvantage of a warm climate. It’s much harder to get in the Christmas mood when there’s no snow out there, and it’s either Sunny or raining.

No, a superzoom bridge camera, so one category below. I'm a passionate photographer, but I don't really have the skills and money to fully use and update a DSLR and lenses every few years.

I used to have an analog Minolta SLR when I travelled across the US and Canada, but in Africa I also got very satisfying results with an early Sony bridge camera.

by Norsktroll on Dec 21, 2009 2:58 PM PST up reply actions

I decided to skip the bridge camera, I did a Canon Powershot G11 instead

Smaller lens and less zoom, but lots of manual options and raw mode available. Also works well in low light. Really well, actually. And of course, easier to transport, it fits in my jacket pocket.

Those bridge cameras are nice though. I was tempted.

Odd Question?

Anyone else think that Dirk should not be able to play tomorrow night if Carl Landry’s Teeth are still in his elbow? I know its a technicality, but a peice of Landry on the court would be illeagle. Not to mention, he doesnt even play for Dallas.

So seriouly, how much of a person needs to be on the court?

by DrivetheLane on Dec 21, 2009 4:51 PM PST up reply actions

I can take losing

But one reason I’ve liked the Roy-led teams is that even when they sucked they always cared, unlike some of our better Jail Blazer teams.

by skywaker9 on Dec 21, 2009 4:52 PM PST up reply actions

i agree.

the effort was ALWAYS there. but this year, that didn’t seem true. even before the injuries. that’s why that GSW loss before the big injuries hurt me so bad. they just looked like they didn’t give a crap. that bothered me more than anything.

by DrivetheLane on Dec 21, 2009 4:54 PM PST up reply actions

i'm not very good at following that kind of stuff, but i trust your judgement.

but to me, even if the coach isn’t doing a good job, if you’re a pro player, that shouldn’t matter. you gotta take pride in what you’re doing. using bad coaching as a reason to not try is pathetic.

by DrivetheLane on Dec 21, 2009 4:57 PM PST up reply actions

And I remember watching teh Minny game right after that

Where we sleepwalked through the first 26 minutes then finally woke up and kicked their ass (although the crowd didn’t help since I, along with at least half the crowd, was more concerned with Oregon-Zona than the Blazers-Wolves).

Think of how much talent is injured right now… Greg, Rudy, Nic, and Travis. For any team to be 17-12 against any competition after losing that much is pretty amazing. We had Jerryd Bayless just sitting on the bench ready to step in.

As I said to someone

Heck no.

It would be more like Bynum, Artest, Odom and Brown

They’d still be pretty dang good with Kobe and Gasol. Right there with Dallas and Denver. Not a title team though.

I didnt watch the game, but EVERYONE is blaming VDN

Although he may be a crappy coach, you have to put a 35 point blown lead on the players. That only happens if the players fall asleep at the wheel and drive it into the ditch…

Maybe but he didn't pull the players

WHen they weere up big. 4 starters played over 40 minutes even though they were up big most of the game.

I dont buy that at all

Playing 40 minutes doesn’t justify blowing a 35 point lead, not even close. Roy has been averaging over 40 minutes a game lately and has looked on top of his game in the 4th quarters. Rose, Noah, Salmons, and Noah can handle playing long minutes.

Plus, the 35 point lead was in the 3rd, usually a coach will stick to his rotation with a big lead until the 4th quarter, when the game is in hand…

40 minutes is nothing during a blowout regular season game.

The Bulls just lost their focus and composure. They panicked and lost all the momentum. Fatigue is not an excuse.

The Bulls started to lose the lead in the middle of the third.

James Johnson and Pargo weren’t going to save the Bulls. Rose sucked even after he got some rest in the 4th quarter. Rose and Deng didn’t show up when the team needed them. Bulls only had to score 15 points in the 4th quarter to secure the win.

really big win. At MSG (which is St. John's home court). Cornell looks like a top 60-70 team in the country this year.

I honestly think they would finish 4th or 5th in the pac-10 this year.

Cornell won’t be in the at-large bid discussion unless they somehow win @ Kansas next month, but if they win the Ivies they could get around a 12 seed which would give them at least a fighting chance at a first round upset. Harvard looks good this year also though.

Durant scored a lot, but his numbers weren’t that good once you realize that he stood in the paint in the zone and grabbed every uncontested defensive rebound. He also did not have near the performance Oden had in the NCAAs.

Oden was said to have higher potential by most people, that’s why 32 GMs said they would take him number 1.

by DrivetheLane on Dec 22, 2009 8:40 AM PST up reply actions

Well, let's be explicit here

There is a difference between joking and telling a joke. If anything, Philthy was the one changing the subject of the convo, and then she started joking with you for calling him out on it. I’m not saying this is the comedy bit that will be enshrined for all to see, but I get it. And it is as effective as a random insert into someone else’s convo could be.

by idoltime on Dec 22, 2009 9:10 AM PST up reply actions

that actually makes sense to me.

i guess if she had replied to Phil with that comment, it would have made more sense at the time, as Phil was having the different conversation. At least now I’ve got another too in the tool kit. haha

by DrivetheLane on Dec 22, 2009 9:18 AM PST up reply actions

hahah Glad I could ellucidate.

And you may have a point. Of course, that is further confirmation that the joke wasn’t poorly timed but may have been put on the wrong person. Then again, she enjoys picking on you more than Phil, so it still makes sense from the P.O.V. of making you feel like you messed up the convo.

by idoltime on Dec 22, 2009 11:05 AM PST up reply actions

stats have different levels of meaningfullness between those sports though.

in basketball, of course that stat you posted is ridiculous but in baseball, night games will affect stats (ie glare from the sun, temperature can affect how a pitcher grips the ball, etc) as will the weather (muddy base paths, for instance). so some of the advanced stats, or even the obscure time of day stuff, is much more important. NBA broadcasters won’t pull that stuff out cause they don’t need to. but in MLB, that stuff is relevant, even if it’s not in another sport.

by DrivetheLane on Dec 21, 2009 9:55 PM PST up reply actions

i dont know squat about baseball

but i highly doubt a manager would start a mediocre pitcher who pitches phenomenally in the night time when the humidity levels are abnormally high vs his star pitcher (who has a a poor ratio of cones to rods in his retina so that he cannot see in the dark as well).

I'm going on a Dave boycott until AK1984 is brought back.

you might be surprised how

closely some managers adhere to the numbers in baseball.

i'm much much more in to stats in baseball than in basketball.

but baseball gets in to some really advanced stuff I can’t even begin to comprehend. But stats in baseball actually do make the game more interesting because it’s so reliant on making the right decision in a massive number of possibilities.

I do have a funny insurance story to tell

So when a claim is reported, the person that takes the initial information types a synopsis of what happened into a box called the Loss Description. It’s usually very short, boring, and professional. Something like “insured rear-ended claimant” or “claimant t-boned insured in an intersection.” Well, last year somebody called in a claim under a Homeowner’s Policy in Michigan, and the person taking the call decided it would be a really good idea to quote the person that was calling, and type the following into the permanent record:

“Claimant’s mom reports her son was playing with the neighbor’s dog after it got outside. The dog scratched the child’s face, so the child kicked the dog, then the dog up and “bitch-slapped” the child."

It turns out the mother of the child is a pole dancer with 3 kids. Of course she is.

Lol, Wendy is about the only Bulls fans putting more blame on the players than the coach for choking the lead away

They managed to score under 1 point per minute to close out the game, for which there is really no explanation.

This might show in one way we are different

I woulda’ said the Kings, so you can hear the hopefulness in the announcers voices as they mount their comeback, and then the joy as the Kings take the lead.

I’d get enuff schadenfreude from watching the Bulls (who we are not) blow a tremendous lead.

#52

by Mortimer on Dec 22, 2009 12:32 AM PST up reply actions

It would be interesting for sure

And it might be the better choice; my first instinct is just “I’ll watch the happy version of the game”.

Did ya watch the game live? Is it worth watching?

#52

by Mortimer on Dec 22, 2009 12:34 AM PST up reply actions

A lot of it can be attributed to Andres Nocioni in his return to the United Center, a -28 in 16 minutes, shooting as if he had something to prove against old pal Luol Deng, though it was just reaffirming what we learned last year: when he’s not hitting shots he’s useless. (again: this is the guy Bulls fans give a standing ovation to while Ben Gordon got booed whenever he touched the ball) And at 1-7 from the field, 1 rebound, and letting Luol Deng completely abuse him on the other end, it was one of those nights for Noc.

I hate Nocioni and I don’t get why anyone likes him.

The blockquote from Matt’s game recap.
