moreso than his raw stats, he did a good job of making Miami help with Beasley and giving us opportunities elsewhere.

I’d like to bring up the following that I mentioned in the previous thread:

-very nice second half defense by Roy, especially on Wade. He did leave a few shooters in the first half which made me bang my head into walls.

-14 shot attempts, 8 assists, 100% TS.

-Bayless is doing a fantastic job of playing within himself, making shots, and dishing some nice passes.

The last two shots Wade hit were very tough

If Wade is going to thit those, not much you can do.

And Roy doesn't need special treatment from the refs

by axel360 on Dec 20, 2009 5:48 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, once Roy gets deep in playoffs, national exposure

especially with the rest of our team hitting on all cylinders, that’s when you really get the national recognition like Wade got in their championship run. They are both great players, your are right, Roy is waiting for his "moment’. (not to mention Greg, which could be rather more spectacular)…..

"Travis went all wang-dang diddly wubba SPROING wow-wow on everybody " Dave's recap, season opener

by Berkeley on Dec 20, 2009 8:52 PM PST up reply actions

I don't think so.

There are things that Roy does better, like outside shooting. Wade might be more enjoyable to watch, but I think Roy is pretty close, at least on offense.

I also anticipate Roy having a longer shelf life. Once Wade loses some of that athleticism he won’t be half as effective.

by Nick Van Excellent on Dec 20, 2009 6:10 PM PST up reply actions

I think that's mostly accurate.
  • Roy draws a foul on 14% of his possessions compared to Wade’s 17%.
  • Roy is much better three point shooter and Wade’s shot selection on outside shots is a bit suspect (only assisted on 19% of his three point shots).
  • Roy is actually a more efficient scorer this season, posting a better TS%. They had the same TS% last season.
  • Wade is a better playmaker, significantly better assist %, although both are above average.

by Nick Van Excellent on Dec 20, 2009 7:07 PM PST up reply actions

interesting but....

I will still take Wade over Roy. Wade makes big plays on d too. On offensive end they are comparable though.

by jcoop85 on Dec 20, 2009 7:32 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

Oh, me too.

I think the stats above support the claim that Wade is better than Roy and they don’t even account for defense.

really nice win, great to see a fantastic all around game from Roy.

Aldridge was 4 for 14 at one point, did a good job of getting inside on Beasley late. Made 6 of his last 9.

This is a playoff team even with all the injuries if Roy plays like last year and Aldridge can play like he did in the 2nd halfl last year.

I liked that we stuck with the starters down the stretch. Webster and Miller deserved to be in at the end.

Fragments from 2 or 3

Landry lost 3 or 5 depending on which report you read. He shot two free throws left handed and then left. Cleaning before X-rays took 30 minutes. Landry spat his teeth into a towel and went to the hospital/dentist.

He has been shot at last year and tore his ACL before. I would assume he comes back with a bright new smile ;)

Dirk is not missing many games either, usually returning way ahead of schedule after ankle tweaks and such. But a gash and bruise on your shooting elbow should probably better heal correctly.

That's what I had as well.

He had one bad jumper early in the shot clock.

He also really hasn’t got the benefit of foul calls yet. He gets clobbered so much, even when he’s not driving to the hoop. Bayless is like a contact magnet.

LaMarcus is the key

I’m not going to say the LMA is soft

but what evidence has he ever given us that he’s ‘strong’? He’s not accomplished as a low-post scorer, rebounder, or shot-blocker, and his defense on low-post threats rates as “good enough” but he’s not a plus by my eyes [the stats may say otherwise, in which case, erase that statement]

If Oden’s injury is indeed a “franchise-altering” one, can we draft a PF/C (I like Greg Monroe) without alienating him?

He forces a normally rigid 4 to come out and play him honest in that 16-18 range. All about mismatches. The league has been in love lately with big athletic forwards who can play out on the perimeter.

I think he defintely could be a great low post player

He has excellent finishing ability, the physical ability, but he is too good of a shooter to waste his jumpshot. that certainly doesn’t mean he should shoot only, or a majority of, jumpshots.

Wouldn't mind if Bayless was starting. Or at least playing.

by collectiveshane on Dec 20, 2009 7:58 PM PST up reply actions

really?

LaMarcus emphatically does not have great finishing ability. How many point-blank shots has he blown because he lays it up rather than dunks for no particular reason other than personal preference?

You know what great finishers do? FINISH THE PLAY! LMA is the anti-finisher.

Drop 32 points, 24 rebounds, and 3 assists vs Denver. LMA would do well to watch many hours of ZBo rebounding, gotta give it to the man, that is one thing he does well for a non-athletic big man. Always good to see a division rival go down as well…

I've been the biggest Wade since his rookie year, still am, but man this guy really is D-whistle.

Roy owned him in the 4th. He scored the same ammount of points on like 17 fewer shots.

Wade is still better, but man Roy just made a huge statement tonight.

by BRoyInThe4th on Dec 20, 2009 8:17 PM PST reply actions

Wade is a great player

but excels at moaning like no other. Brandon whines for calls like all stars do, but Wade whimpers and pouts after every single play, whether on offense or defense. The Blazers had a couple calls go against them, but the game was officiated pretty well overall, with decent flow for a game that featured little offensive fire power. And kudos to LMA and Joel for playing D without fouling. They really did a great job controlling the damage Wade and Beasley caused in the paint. They also totally eliminated Miami’s marginal supporting cast, who have been dangerous at home in spurts this year.

I'm just not crazy about player nick names...

by Hipster Olympic Team! on Dec 20, 2009 8:30 PM PST reply actions

team actually making some progress

Think about it, the Blazers are actually starting to solve some of their big backlog of thorny issues:

1). We learned from his play this season before he got injured that Greg Oden is capable of playing at the elite level in the NBA, if and when he overcomes his plague of injuries.

2). Bayless has upgraded his ability to where he is a bona fide NBA guard.

3). Webster appears to have the ability to be an NBA small forward. His play has improved enough that you can even have him in during the 4th quarter. I expect it will take all year for his game to solidify, but he is on the right track.

4). The issues of compatibility between Andre Miller and other players (esp Roy) appear to be largely overcome by now.

Think of all the question marks at the beginning of the season. Some of the biggies we now have answers to.

Now all 3 draft picks are all still basically unkonwns. (we’ve seen way too little of Cunningham to judge what he is capable of).

What I expect to see with them is:

Cunningham will occasionally get some minutes. If he starts to really take hold then he might wind up being another Bayless type situation. But don’t be surprised if we wind up at the end of the year not knowing what we have in Cunningham. But Cunningham will have a lot tougher burden of proof because of being picked at a point in the draft where it is borderline whether you expect him to make it in the NBA or not.

Pendergraph I doubt will get very many minutes. Although if he can show the ability to be a decent defensive center to backup Przybilla, that would be a different story.

I think Mills is the really intriguing case. What if once he heals he shows potential to be another Aaron Brooks? That could create a heck of a logjam at point guard. If Blazers are lucky and Mills is ready to play beginning of the year then they may get enough time to judge him before trading deadline in Feb. If he’s good enough to be in the rotation at PG, it seems like they are going to trade away a guard.

I’d trade Blake for whatever you can get, maybe a 4th string center who is playing like crap but who played well at one time in the past- then you can try to train them back to being a good player again.

If Mills does cut the mustard then even if thety get rid of one guard they may still be too stuffed to the gills with guards. (don’t forget Rudy).

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside.
