Holdahl: Brandon Roy Owns Up
As I noted last night, it was nice to hear Brandon Roy take responsibility for his play after the game.
Casey Holdahl has much more on that...
-------------
A heartfelt admission that he "got caught up looking around." Another declaration that he needs to improve. A mea culpa when it comes to "pointing fingers." What brought on this moment of self-reflection?
"Just a lot of talking about this and offense and can you and Greg play and can you and Andre play," said Roy. "I’ve got to play. I’ve got to get better. I’ve got to make the plays I’ve been able to make in the past. I’m capable of it, it’s just my mind has been in a lot of places and now I’ve got to just get focused on this team and just getting that hunger back. I hate to lose so I feel like I’ve got to get out there, be aggressive and confident. I haven’t been very confident lately and I think guys can tell that. I’ve got to get my confidence back and I think the rest of the team will see it."

I've never worried about Brandon
He’s a winner. He, Oden and LMA are a great nucleus.
I was a little surprised and disappointed when he allowed the media to get pull quotes from him that placed him in the middle of the PG debate. That was too bad. If anything, I hope he has learned that the media is not his friend and that winning basketball will be his true statement. Also, Brandon will always be the leader of this team—-when the team looks good he looks good.
I'm just not crazy about player nick names...

it was the best of Brandon, it was the worst of Roy
the other day Quick was saying that while B-Roy is the best NBA star for the media to deal with, Jason also said that #7 is far too “honest” in his answers. We used to complain about Clyde and his “generic/canned” answers to reporter’s questions, but that lack of honesty (or candidness) is actually a safer way to “play” the post-game mob. Roy reveals too much of his mind, and his words (no matter how honest or innocent they were intended to be) sets him up for media and fan scrutiny and second-guessing.
I’m sure most fans and reporters would like Brandon to never change, his kind of responses to questions are refreshingly different and provide us with rare inside info. But for his sake, and for the sake of the organization, it might be best if he adopts the Crash Davis school of pat answers to cover every reporter’s question (from Bull Durham)

Both teams played hard...
Is a better post-game statement for the overall good of the Blazers than Brandon’s honesty.
i tend to agree
the public support of blake and his personal preference for Blake and the misuse of Andre and then the poor performances by Roy, to his own standards and from a fan perspective, have combined to put a dent in his image for some folks.
i get that gus that aren’t the core should adapt their game to fit the stars, but miller is kind of different, we need what he brings so we are not so one dimensional come the post season. Houston basically took Aldridge and Roy away from us on offense and we could not cope in the end, now having Oden going with the addition of Andre, well if we get that working we will be much tougher to beat in the playoffs…
We had a great season lsat year, but doing the things we did last year won’t move us forawrd…

Good to hear
When Greg Oden finishes with only 4 shots from the offense and 9 off of putbacks (often on Brandon misses), it takes some serious cognitive dissonance to think that we’re completely subverting our offense to him. Let’s see Brandon take these three days work out the kinks, and then come out and hang 40 on Houston on 20 shots and 15 FTs or something.
Although reading the entire piece
it reads a lot like BT Smith’s impassioned profession of McMillan love from last week. Understandable from Casey since he works for the franchise, though. There’s a marked difference from Roy saying:
I realized tonight that I’ve got to get better, I’ve got to get into the gym and continue to work because I see some things that I could have done out there but I just wasn’t able to make some of the shots and make some of the reads. I think I’ve got to improve. Don’t get me wrong, the team has to get better but I still think there’s room for me to improve to help this team.
And Roy saying:
How do I sacrifice and still be me? That’s what I’m trying to find out. I’m trying to sacrifice and I’m trying … but I’m feeling – Arrrrrgh! I don’t think it works. Not because of the scoring, it just doesn’t seem right.
Even though Casey is implying that they are the same thing just because he’s talking about himself. He’s gotten a lot of unfair stick here from us BEdgers, but so has every Blazer at some point, except possibly Nic, strangely enough.
by Royster on Dec 2, 2009 10:27 AM PST up reply actions 1 recs
That is interesting. I think it’s because Nic rarely goes beyond his abilites and generally fills the role we ask him to. Not much to complain about, though he’ll get his share of criticism if he never improves.
i cry for nic
Along the same lines
We probably ask Nic to do less than we’ve asked any player in recent memory. If he got lit up, well, he was guarding a guy who’s supposed to light guys up, and I honestly can’t remember a player being asked to do less offensively than Nic. Even Joel was out setting screens and clearing space. Not an insult to him, just how it was.
Hard to disappoint when the expectations were so low to begin with.
yeah, its because we thought he was going to spend the year in Boise.
'Cuse 88-Cornell 73. My Big Red failed to beat the spread by 2 points. Hence the new avatar.
Expectations were low...
…but we also didn’t use Nic anywhere near his capabilities. As shown by his performance in the European playoffs, Nic is a very well rounded player who can score a lot if he’s a primary or secondary scoring option. Unfortunately he was usually the 4th or 5th option last year and had to make a lot of his own plays off of rebounds, alley oops or busted sets.
"My shoulder is OK. And away we go." -- Nic Batum
"wang-dang diddly wubba SPROING wow-wow" -- Dave
Nic deserves a ton of criticism
He admitted that he “knew” he needed “surgery” and he waited until the end of training camp. He put his own glory ahead of the team and I am more disappointed in him than I have ever been in any other Blazer.
No joke, no sarcasm. Nic let the team and the fans down.

Taking his other comments into consideration
Who has he lacked confidence in? Himself? Nate? Andre? Oden? There may be more than a few layers to this onion.
Whether your preference is watching or playing, basketball is a TEAM game.
wait.... get the HUNGER back?
that was like a shocker to me. I mean weve been hearing all this stuff about shots, not playing well, but this is the first ive heard from him pertaining to desire.
thats like close to a post-contract lull admission. no? hunger? whhhAAT?
The lack of hunger
Is what it looked like to me… and maybe the biggest problem with his (and LMA’s) play this season. Lack of effort, lack of anger at losing.
I am glad he acknowledges it.

LMA was having fun last night on the bench
looked like he was at a comedy club and not a basketball game with your team getting a butt whiping, wait, the Bs looked like a bad joke most of the night…
"I play, Coach stays. He goes, I go." - Jimmy Chitwood
oddly enough
I had a blast last night, despite the frustrations, I was simply enthralled by some of the work oden was doing for one. If you are going to go down with the ship, go down like oden last night and you will ern a lot of respect that is for sure. We just get the other guys fighting like that and this thing will swing back in the right direction…
"Oh Yeah!" ~ Kool Aid Man
Only thing I don't like...
Is that Brandon thinks the rest of the team can’t be confident without him too being confident. Greg is plenty confident. Paul Allen isn’t paying you 85 mil to try to look confident to your teammates, he’s paying you that money to be that guy that made the all star team, and was looked at as a top 5 (or so) player in the league. Not little Whiney McWhinerstein.
I know thats probably a little harsh… But I’m annoyed. Not so much in the losses…. the team is going to lose a few. Its the lack of effort.
At least Greg is trying… And Greg likes Miller. Start Miller. Let Roy run the second unit ;)
Are you serious about bringing Roy off the bench?
Because I am. I’d like to see Oden, Rudy and Miller start the game along with Webster and Aldridge – and let’s see what happens. If Rudy is screwing up or Martell’s shot is off, bring in Roy. – Elgin
Travis Outlaw, the Funnel Cake of the Blazers
Good to hear
It’s interesting that he was mainly just talking about his offense needing work. I hope he will also realize that his defense could use a little help as well.
Way to man up, BRoy
Now follow through! Win us some games
Columbus til I die, Columbus til I die. I know I am, I swear I am, Columbus til I die!
Walk the walk.
I don’t care if Roy can’t score 30 points. I just want to see some pride in his defense. This goes for LMA too. Roy has a better excuse to conserve his energy than LMA. Everything I’ve seen of LMA is a guy who’s too clean to get dirty. He’s become too worried about fouls to play defense.
"I'm at the thingamajig talking the yakety-yak" - Kenny Smith
I am going to finally give Brandon a break after reading this...
What I saw last night was a much better effort on his part in terms of ‘scrappiness’ (thank you Nate…). He was chasing after loose balls and digging in a little more especially when there was the glimmer of hope at the end of the 4th. He had a terrible cold stretch shooting through the 2nd and 3rd but nobody was really hitting consistently (OK, Howard). Roy’s defense is still pretty lazy but, I see this as where he can improve his game and help the team the most. It is not that he is a bad defender, he just doesn’t play hard defense consistently. He really only digs in occasionally when it is absolutely necessary.
Over the last couple of years, I’ve repeatedly read how Roy is saving himself for the 4th quarter (meaning not playing on the defensive end as aggressively as he is able). While not necessarily agreeing with this mindset, I think the team has reached a point where this is no longer needed. We have so much talent, I don’t think Roy needs to hold back. Play hard at both ends until you are tired then take a rest on the bench. Hopefully by then, we are up sufficiently to allow a few minutes of rest, then go back in and do it again.
If Roy feels he is not involved enough because Oden and Aldridge are getting the majority of shots during any particular stretch, then he needs to go make up for it at the defensive end or crash the boards and get some offensive rebounds. I think he needs to take a look a what Webster is doing. Clearly, Webster is not a focal point of the offense but he sure has been finding ways to get involved whether it be rebounding or playing hard defense or even running the floor on a fast-break.
Brandon Roy is unquestionably the leader of this team. His attitude/demeanor will carry everyone else to victory or defeat.

ahhhhh!!!!!
This is the mind set that both Brandon and LMA have! I take pride in BRoy getting national pub and being recognized but not at the cost of winning games. If all 3 share the ball and we have role players working together they have championship potential! That is what’s important, not all star bids.

Sounds like Brandon has allowed himself to get distracted.
And is coming to that realization. No surprise. The organoization, the team and the fans have put a lot on Brandon Roy and he strikes me as the sort of person that feels obligated to take on such burdens. It is not surprising or unusual for anyone, let alone a 25 year old, to lose sight of the big picture. Not when he’s trying to concentrate on so many little details.
It could be something as simple as Roy wanting to live up to his new deal and then questioning how he was going to do that if Greg, Andre, Martell and Rudy were all going to be a bigger part of the offense. Most people place great stock in numbers and I thing Brandon might have allowed himeslf to get caught up in that a little. Now I think the light came back on and he realizes that in the long run, his success will be measured by the team’s success. I don’t think he ever went away from that idea. I just think it may have gotten a little muddled.

When Miller is starting...
…I’ll start backing Roy again. And this is coming from a UW alum :)
It’s so painfully obvious that Miller on the court makes us a better team. The ball moves better, we get better looks, we get DRE cutting to the hoop and scoring, and GREG GETS THE BALL MORE.
problem is
if Nate puts Blake in the game with Rudy, Howard, Joel (etc) then the 2nd unit will (usually) hit an offensive drought. The main argument Nate uses for bringing Andre off the bench is scoring balance. Unfortunately, Roy’s comments have turned the debate into “Brandon likes playing with Steve” which, while it may be true, it isn’t necessarily the main reason Nate has chosen to start Blake—especially after the injury to Travis reduced the bench’s scoring potency

That's why I rather see Bayless get the burn instead of Blake on the second unit
That is, if we are truly using the “second” unit. However, the bench now usually plays with at least one out of Roy or LA, as well as Oden. As such.I don’t think your concern is no longer warranted. Keep Blake out there if either Roy or LA is out there. If not, Rex time.
I think we both know that's not gonna happen
Nate is not going to kick Blake to the curb by starting Miller and bringing Rex in off the bench at backup PG. We can have all the “druthers” we want, but unless Steve gets hurt he’s going to be out there every night, for 25+ mpg
BTW, my concerns are usually very warranted…even if they don’t show up out on the court for a couple of months
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
Ugh...I used a double negative..meant to say "I think your concern is no longer warranted"
At any rate, I do agree that Bayless likely won’t get any PT this year, barring a Blake trade. But at the current rate that we are losing, moving Blake becomes more and more of a possibility…at least that is my speculation.
Given that we have holes in the front court positions and a guard that can play wasting away on the bench, perhaps KP finally makes that mid-season trade that we’ve been waiting for last couple years instead of sitting on expiring contracts like in the past years.
Dealing Blake will be tough for KP, Nate and Roy
KP said he made a mistake when he dealt Steve the first time
Nate has been in Blake’s corner for years
and Brandon has made it clear he prefers playing alongside #2
It’s going to take a whole lot of losing to flip the opinion of those three
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
I don't see what I want from either Blake or Miller
Miller doesn’t hit the 3 and Blake doesn’t drive the ball to the hoop. Miller can’t jump so he can’t get all the way to the hoop unless he dekes the guy guarding him – he’s excellent at that, but it doesn’t always work.
I’d give both up for John Wall right now. – Elgin
Travis Outlaw, the Funnel Cake of the Blazers
Can we ban all NBA affiliates from using phrases like "Have got to get"?
It sounds like nails on a chalkboard to me when people say “have got to” instead of simply saying “need to”, but “have got to get” “has gotten me to get” my teeth worn down from all the grinding
And its one of the biggest Nate-isms out there that make him so unreadable.
Please, for the love of all that is holy, please stop using the following: "Book it.", "FTW", "Epic" & "Fail".
...no seriously--stop.

mention much on defense. I can live with guys being in funls offensively but there is no excuse for lazy defense. I mean even Monta Ellis plays some defense and he plays 48 minutes.

I could hug Casey for writing this.
So many seem to have totally forgotten how much Roy has meant to the Blazers, and the extremely key role he plays now and will continue to play toward the success of this team.
This “what have you done for me lately” mentality has me almost nauseated, and shakes my confidence in the human race. I can’t think of a classier, more unselfish, media friendly, good citizen, talented player in the entire NBA. I consider myself to be one of the most fortunate fans in the NBA to have Brandon Roy as a member of my team.
I’ve said it all along that the over the top expectations for this team in the off season would result in this kind of appalling negativity if fan’s fantasies weren’t met (but I certainly didn’t predict Brandon frickin Roy becoming a target).
Jeesh.

I just heard an interview with Josh Wilcox who was the Duck
tight end in their last Rose Bowl appearance. He made the statement that the same fans that are now promoting Masoli for Heisman are the same ones who were booing him after the Duck’s 2nd game this year.
That totally equates to what is happening with Brandon Roy and the Blazers …. only in reverse order.
Fair weather fans. Ugh. If the only thing that is important is win, win, win, why not join up with the Lakers? You’ll likely be much happier there.

Its not being a fairweather fan to point out that Roy is not playing anywhere near his capabilities right now
Booing Roy and giving up on him would be another matter, but let’s face facts- he’s not playing well at all. Its critical to the team’s hopes that he gets it in gear. Hopefully he won’t take another completely off from basketball. Kudos to KP Corleone for identifying that very early as a much bigger issue than most of us realized.
'Cuse 88-Cornell 73. My Big Red failed to beat the spread by 2 points. Hence the new avatar.
I know that you've read
all the horribly negative comments about Roy just as I have. It’s those type of comments that I am appalled by.
I don’t at all agree with KPCorleone’s authoritative declaration that Roy’s performance this year is related to what he didn’t do in the off season. How can he know that it had any affect at all? There are a myriad other other explanations for his seemingly reduced production to this point. And if Roy did indeed slack off this summer as he indicated he did, there could have been an excellent reasons for doing so …. like a bad knee or foot that needed to be rested. A situation like that could also have motivated him to take off some weight (which I see Roy got slammed for too). Better that he would come in overweight like many NBA’ers do?
If this Blazer team doesn't light your fire, then your wood is wet!
remember when roy told z-bo to step his game up when zach was saying that everyone else needed to step up
is that kind of like this.
Roy, the star player telling everyone else to step their games up while playing poorly himself. I’m glad he realized this before someone had to stand up to him tell him that he needs to play better.
so in a way, roy has told the star player to step his game up twice now.

get Miller in the starting lineup!
Dre has to play with Greg. The only way to predictably make that happen is to start Dre. Once this happens, the Blazers will begin to roll. (First unit will rock, and second of Blake, Rudy, (Travis, ) Cunningham, Pryz will be all right…)
(First unit will rock, and second of Blake, Rudy, (Travis, ) Cunningham, Pryz will be all right…)
Sure, if “all right” is a new way of saying “stagnated offense”

And Rudy scoring 2 points off the bench when there are so few other options is…underwhelming
