Trade Drawer 12/19

I know there's already another trade drawer on the front page, but it's a few days old now and I wanted to start a new one.  I'm not a big fan of drastic changes midway through a season, but I think a simple trade to address a need would be perfect.

My favorite trade would be Steve Blake for Brandon Bass.  This would clear up some of our PG clutter and would give us a solid backup to LA.  I know Orlando said they weren't interested in trading him, but they're not really playing him, either, so I could see it happening.

Other players that are supposedly available that I'd be interested in seeing in a Blazer's uniform:

Marcin Gortat

Anthony Randolph

Caron Butler

Tyrus Thomas

Rudy Gay (not sure if he's still available since he's been playing great this year)

Finally, would Paul Millsap be available for a trade now that Boozer is playing so well?  I haven't stayed too current on the happenings in Utah, but I know that they could definitely use a couple expiring contracts (Blake, Outlaw) if this was the case.

Randolph or Bass would be fantastic

since we’re not doing anything significant this year, Anthony Randolph is the best option. For this year alone it’s easily Bass, but we shouldn’t be making decisions based on this year.

by as11osu on Dec 19, 2009 11:58 AM PST reply actions

Bass is gettable

But it will take more than Steve Blake. At the very least, we’d have to include a pick and one of our rookie PFs as well.

I don’t think Randolph is attainable. Golden State will trade him in the right deal, but they will expect more value than Portland is willing to part with. They’re not interested in expirings like Blake and Outlaw. They want an established big. And we’re not trading Przybilla.

Plus GS is trying to package Randolph with Magette

AND Randolph is said to want a 12mill per extension after next year. I’d say he’s off the board, by a mile.

by TheThinWhiteDuke on Dec 19, 2009 1:17 PM PST up reply actions

that's why I'd rather pursue a deal with Maggette and Turiaf

then hopefully still be able to flip Corey in a year or two

Ronny would be a decent back up LMA/Joel, and he’d still be available to play backup PF when Greg’s back

It would probably cost KP Miller, Outlaw and Pendergraph. If he’s really sharp maybe he could pry away Morrow, but that’s probably a pipe dream

by two4larue on Dec 19, 2009 7:46 PM PST up reply actions

Magette makes too much for that deal

We’d have to throw in another 7 million or so from our end (minus whatever our exemption is).

by TheThinWhiteDuke on Dec 20, 2009 6:44 PM PST up reply actions

we ran the numbers

8,937,931 Maggette
4,140,000 +Turiaf
13,077,931

6,730,800 Miller
3,600,000 Outlaw
+457,588 Pendergraph
+900,000 (estimated remaining capspace after Tolliver was signed)
11,688,388 × 125 +100k = 14,719,485

(there’s room to spare for Morrow, but I admit it’s a pipe dream to expect to get him)

Like I calculated elsewhere, the deal potentially saves the Warriors 37 mil over the next 4 years, if they don’t exercise the 3rd year option on Andre’s contract and assuming Turiaf stays with GS and doesn’t choose to “opt out” in 2011-2012

Wow

Maggette’s deal isn’t as bad as I thought. He’s a decent swing F, even if he’s not worth that amount of cash. To get Turiaf though, it might be worth it.
I’d agree that Morrow is a pipe dream, but wouldn’t it be nice?

by TheThinWhiteDuke on Dec 20, 2009 10:25 PM PST up reply actions

I’d agree that Morrow is a pipe dream, but wouldn’t it be nice?

It would, but that’s a young/cheap player that the Warriors would resist dealing, and adding AM to the Blazer’s roster would create PT issues with Rex and Rudy

Gortat, Butler, or Bass

All would be great additions.
Unfortunately, they’d want Jerryd or Rudy as well as cap relief for any of those players.
Maybe even Batum as well.
I’m not sure any of those guys is worth the cost. Maybe Butler, especially if Batum goes.

Don't think we can trade for Millsap

Given he signed an offer sheet with us. Does it not have to be twelve months after he signed before he can be traded to Portland (although not anywhere else)

by PhilGB on Dec 19, 2009 1:27 PM PST reply actions

What about this Portland-Golden State-Utah trade?

POR trades: Rudy Fernandez, Travis Outlaw, and Andre Miller
GSW trades: Anthony Randolph, Corey Maggette, and Ronny Turiaf
Utah trades: Carlos Boozer

POR receives: Corey Maggette and Ronny Turiaf
GSW recieves: Carlos Boozer and Rudy Fernandez
Utah recieves: Andre Miller, Anthony Randolph, and Travis Outlaw

Portland does it because: We get a good small forward and another quality big man.
Golden State does it because: They get rid of the Corey Maggette contract, get a 20-10 big man with an expiring contract and Rudy, who would be great in their system and has an amazing contract.
Utah does it because: Boozer is going to leave anyway, and they get a great backup point guard with a decent contract, a talented 3/4(randolph), and an expiring contract(outlaw).

The only thing that isn’t great about this trade is why would Utah spend $7 million a year on a player (miller) that is backing up their best player(williams), but the fact they get great value for an unhappy player that is going leave makes it worth it for them(I think).

Thoughts?

Not good enough for us, imo.

Our SF position is nailed down once Batum comes back. I am supremely confident that Nic and Martell deserve 48 minutes of PT.

Not to mention this trade leaves us with only 3 guards – Roy, Bayless and Blake.

You can measure skill and talent with your eyes, but productivity is shown through statistics.

by austinpwnz on Dec 19, 2009 2:00 PM PST up reply actions

Martell can definitely play some 2

He was actually considered a shooting guard until we got this Roy guy. He can play the 2.

by axel360 on Dec 19, 2009 3:37 PM PST up reply actions

How/why will we lose him?

I have heard a lot on here that he will eventually either go back to Europe or to another team in order to get more PT. Do you think that’s the case and we should get as much as we can for him before that happens?

by ClydeTheGlyde on Dec 21, 2009 7:59 AM PST up reply actions

Why are we trying to trade for Magette?

He costs too much, needs the ball to be effective and plays no D.

Consistent being the operative word. Plus he gets to the free throw line. Always.

by TheThinWhiteDuke on Dec 20, 2009 10:28 PM PST up reply actions

I think KP could get Maggette and Turiaf without sacrificing Rudy

If Rudy’s in that deal I’d demand Anthony Morrow in return. But frankly I’d rather just keep Fernandez and deal Miller, Outlaw and Pendergraph for Maggette and Turiaf.

Fills two gaping roster holes without giving up too much

Why would the Warriors want Andre? Not sure, maybe Nellie has a jones for him. They’d certainly prefer Miller’s contract to Maggette’s. Travis’ expiring contract would come off their books and Portland could even resign him in July for the MLE, if they want. And Pendergraph is the big guy that GS gets back to “replace” Turiaf. Who knows? It may be enough.

we aren't going to get anyone good if we don't include Rudy.

No one wants Miller or Outlaw.

When coming up with a trade, you can’t just think of these wild, fantasy trades that would benefit us and no one else. NO WAY we’re getting Maggette and Turiaf for Outlaw, Miller, and Pendergraph. We can’t just trade our junk for good players.

Get well Greg! Rip City is still behind you!

savings to GS

the Warriors would save 6 mil off their cap this year
2 mil next year
and 21 mil in 2011-2013

in this economy, that’s significant

I’m not giving away Rudy for Maggette/Turiaf. That’s mortaging the future to pay for a uncertain present

by two4larue on Dec 19, 2009 9:15 PM PST up reply actions

oops, my bad

Turiaf makes 4 mil in 2010-11, that means GS saves nearly 6 mil next year, if they make the deal and keep Pendergraph. Then another 4+ mil in 2011-2012

Add it all up and that’s a potential savings of a cool 37 mil from one deal.

It’s not all about the talent. Look deeper

I love Steve for Bass but here is 2 more

Steve Blake to Miami for Joel Anthony and a 2nd round pick – also gives us 5mil in Cap space to use this season to do another, Lopsided trade, save another team from luxury tax or to Facilitate trades between other teams netting us draft picks.

Andre Miller to Indiana for Jeff Foster and a 1st round pick.

Ultimately I would really like to move up in the 2010 Draft so we can get Cole Aldrich (in case Pryz bolts or Oden does not come back at full speed). I feel we could do so if we had more 1st round picks

Draft Cole Aldrich 2010

by jlarose78 on Dec 19, 2009 5:27 PM PST reply actions

This year it gives us cap space to facilitate other trades. I know we loose it at the end of the year

for example once you have traded blake you can then trade Outlaw for a 8mil player.

Draft Cole Aldrich 2010

by jlarose78 on Dec 19, 2009 9:37 PM PST up reply actions

Another example of things we could do with cap space this year

Team A want a player from Team B but salaries don’t match we could use our Cap space to help facilitate that trade in exchange for a draft pick. Think of it in terms of what Memphis does every year right around the trade deadline.

Draft Cole Aldrich 2010

And how the "Thunder"

(then Sonics) Got 2 1st rounders AND Kurt Thomas for nothing

Andre Miller to Indiana for Jeff Foster and a 1st round pick.

Indy’s over the cap, so Portland would have to take back another contract. (Even a little one, like Josh McRoberts.) I think KP would hold out for Tyler Hansbrough, and the Pacers would say no

I like the idea of an unprotected first round draft choice, though. Adding that sweetner brings Foster’s value “up” to Miller’s in your hypothetical deal

Andre and Jeff Foster work on Trade Machine because they make about the same amount

halfway-decent big guys in their 30s

make 5-6 mil until they can’t jump anymore. It is what it is. Nice work if you can get it

I do like what Foster could bring to the Blazers, but now that Greg is out I’d rather have another guy besides Joel who’s at least a threat to block a shot.

How about swapping Blake’s expiring contract for Nate Robinson’s? Mainly just to get rid of Blake. I think NY goes for it since Robinson’s agent just asked for a trade.

Our unwanted players for their unwanted players ;-)

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=ylcp3wk

Randolph, Maggette, Ellis for Aldridge, Miller, Blake, Pendergraph, Mills. That works despite PPP for LMA.

Or a smaller version: http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=yjj8w7s

Randolph, Maggette, Azubuike for Aldridge, Webster, Pendergraph, Mills. Hollinger likes that version better for us.

but I couldn’t put keys to screen on letting LMA go like that. It does make sense though.

I feel like this is an interesting handcuff trade

to the money saver posted above. Either GSW wants to get better and do this deal or sae money and do the other

by momomoses7 on Dec 20, 2009 12:51 AM PST up reply actions

To me Aldridge is an excellent complimentary 4/5

he needs to play along side a true banger. Aldridge can spread the floor and is best facing the basket and hitting jumpers. The only problem is that unless Greg comes back full force we aren’t going to have a skilled banger without giving up a big piece like LA. Everyone says oh well Bass or Turiaf could be had and they will be that banger but I just don’t see those guys as all that great. Oh well…. maybe when LA once again doesn’t make the all-star game he will start to realize he needs to get more physical.

by Escrote on Dec 19, 2009 8:51 PM PST reply actions

Everyone says oh well Bass or Turiaf could be had and they will be that banger but I just don’t see those guys as all that great

They’re not all that great, but they are decent reserves for a contending team. Look at it this way, KP was prepared to add Millsap to the mix last July. That’s a “great” player who could’ve pushed LMA for PF minutes (my suggestion was that if Millsap had come to PDX then play LMA at SF for 12-14 mpg, and right now he’s showing that he can defend out on the perimeter as well as in the post, eh? Of course once Greg went down PT for Millsap wouldn’t be an issue…) I’m not as high on Bass because he’s not a shot-blocker or back-to-the-basket player. At least Turiaf can bang and block shots, and when Joel goes out that’s what Portland needs the most.

DeJuan Blair would’ve been a cheap complimentary banger for LMA. He’s the fish that got away
