so you're saying all we have to do

is make sure the game doesn’t continue.

I'd like to see standard deviation with player stat averages

You can measure skill and talent with your eyes, but productivity is shown through statistics.

by austinpwnz on Dec 19, 2009 5:26 PM PST up reply actions

Hmm. Any particular stats?

In terms of per-game, per-minute (or per 36/48 to make it), or percentage numbers?

Depending on the stat involved, that might be interesting enough to kick myself in the butt and look at one or two fistfuls of data…. I’m just not sure exactly how to slice into it.

I do know one correlation we could surely find, though. Even if a player’s results vary according to a normalized curve around a mean, there’d be a huge correlation between the low and high ends of that curve and fan perceptions of “effort.” When LMA or whoever came up on the short end of his own curve, fans in numbers would always claim they’d seen it in his eyes at the opening tip — he just wasn’t going to try tonight. Slacker. I swear, people think this about their video game “players.”

by feral on Dec 19, 2009 6:24 PM PST up reply actions

well, to start, probably just points per 36 and standard deviation of that stat, per game.

by austinpwnz on Dec 19, 2009 6:26 PM PST up reply actions

I'm lazy tonight

Here’s an article from back in May, though, giving a sample of “Scoring Standard Deviation” numbers.

Short version is that a high S.D. per game is around Kobe’s 9+, and low is around 6. Explosive scoring wings up top, consistent bigs at the bottom, of the range, sorta kinda. (And A.I. will take as many shots as necessary to get his point total.)

LeBron James – 9.29
Dwyane Wade – 8.87
Kobe Bryant – 8.55
J.R. Smith – 8.27
Josh Smith – 8.25
Dirk Nowitzki – 8.21
Carmelo Anthony – 8.00
Kevin Durant – 7.87
Ben Gordon – 7.65
Brandon Roy – 7.62
Gerald Wallace – 7.54
Dwight Howard – 7.42
Allen Iverson – 7.32
Pau Gasol – 6.30
Hedo Turkoglu – 6.02
Tim Duncan – 5.94
Yao Ming – 5.86

Seriously, this is such a simple idea that I almost have to chase it sometime.

"It has come to the editor’s attention that the Herald-Leader neglected to cover the civil rights movement. We regret the omission."

by feral on Dec 19, 2009 6:37 PM PST up reply actions

Interesting.

I wonder how strongly it correlates to shot selection (mainly jumpshots), since obviously Dirk is up there with the wings.

by samuelleejackson on Dec 19, 2009 6:21 PM PST up reply actions

His shot is way off

But he did so much otherwise, I can’t be mad at the kid.

Sure would be nice if he hit a shot every once in a while…

LMA was totally flat on a defender he can score on, and no one can hit a jumper. It was good to be so close halfway into the 4th, but we ran out of juice after the failed alley oop.

by Mortimer on Dec 19, 2009 6:23 PM PST up reply actions

If you're going to give Martell defensive credit

You have to do so for R.Lewis as well. He’s been fronting LMA and playing ball denial for the whole game, and he’s been playing hard. The court would open up if anyone could make a jumpshot.

I have to think going that small is what cost us this game. There is just no way that the floor spacing from that lineup counter-acts the lack of defense or size.

Yeah I'm not worried about this loss

On the other hand, the LMA thing is concerning. Either he’s playing poorly or he’s hurting. I almost hope for the former.

by Timmay! on Dec 19, 2009 6:31 PM PST up reply actions

i'm hoping it's because he lost

his rythym after nate benched him for the first half after he picked up 2 pfs.

but i doubt it. he’s just a softie.

Brandon Roy's point totals the last 10 games:

26, 19, 25, 28, 27, 29, 23, 23, 25, 27

And 33 tonight.

He’s showing up every night right now. Not always efficient, but he’s working.

I really miss Rudy

and hell I miss Batum. That game was only close because of their bad play. What the heck happened to LMA? I think there are some issues about Howard camping in the key.

for a "shooter"

his shot doesn’t really go in very often.

by CleBlazer on Dec 19, 2009 6:41 PM PST up reply actions

Nobody on BE has called him a shooter in a while, to be fair

Tonight he was playing despite his shooting. He was active in passing lanes, and gave opponents trouble when trying to shoot.

by Timmay! on Dec 19, 2009 6:42 PM PST up reply actions

most likely.

Maybe he’s better than Cunningham and Howard, but I doubt it. I’d be fine with playing Dante/Jeff and benching old man Juwan, but that’s not happening anytime soon. Tolliver’s going to have trouble moving ahead of those guys.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
