12-19-2009 JD

Whats up? See after the jump....

Star-divide

Back in the beginning of the JD, Dave used to create a list of words to meet the required minimum. Junkers in turn would then create stories using those words. Is it just me, but when do we lose that? So in remembrance of this forgotten tradition I have created what I call the 7/1/2008 Project, in remembrance of a simpler time when the topic of the JD actually drove part of the discussion.

Join with me.

Here is the list of words:

  • pedestrian
  • malcontent
  • Mr. Belvedere
  • chest freezer
  • moose
  • socks
  • debutante
  • clubhouse
  • triangle
  • airplane
  • hype
  • rainbow

it reads like a bad clue game:

Mr. Belvedere went to fetch the moose meat from the rainbow colored chest freezer only to discover the malcontent debutantes body… sans socks… was folded into a rather pedestrian triangle inside. Don’t believe the hype

When I was growing up I got my first puppy (Lucky).

When he was still a pup he used to like wrestling with a full-grown cat we had. As he grew a little the cat could only ward him off by using her claws. She smacked him on the head and one of her claws pierced his eyelid. As he drew back her claw wouldn’t break free and he was dragging her across the floor with his eyelid. That pretty much ended the wrestling sessions.

I have a chihuahua. Her name is CHOCHO. That means pretty little girl in Ladakhi, a language belonging to an indiginous group of people in northeastern india.

Before I named her that though, I asked a Mexican guy I worked with if it meant anything in spanish, because it sounded like something in spanish. He told me no, and I named her that, and a few months later learned that it was a slang term for a certain part of the female anatomy. So now I have a Mexican dog, with a Mexican slang term for a name, and it’s too late to change it. It doesn’t really bother me, except the guys at work make a weird humping motion whenever I talk about my dog now.

I got played.

I just picked up Bayless over Chalmers in my non-BE league

Chalmers has been demoted to second fiddle in Miami. And I should get Nelson back some time over Christmas, then I can either drop Bayless or Watson or Brewer. Since we have so many games at the moment, he can rack up the points one by one.

I did not buy a ticket for BE night for me

Maybe I should have, and then hand it off in January. But the chance I pay another $500 just to fly cross country, stay overnight and back for that day is pretty slim. I might make the away game in Boston and potentially another one though.

by Norsktroll on Dec 19, 2009 12:43 AM PST reply actions

That's why there should be a summer league thing planned in advance

The only reason I did BE night last year was the crazy low airfare and I had it off.

I did find a pretty cheap flight via Chicago. It's still another 8-10 hours travel each way, and about $200 each way.

Maybe it would be cheaper if I buy directly a flight to Portland/Seattle and back and exit in NY on the first route, but not sure what US customs would think about that.

It’s very pedestrian not to have a poll and causes much malcontent, especially so when there is a poll and you can’t vote.

Mr. Belvedere a well know poll dancer. Who keeps moose in his chest freezer and thinks the triangle offense is a bunch of hype likes to dance in his socks like a debutante in a clubhouse and would prefer that every airplane had a poll to encourage poll spinning while flying over the rainbow.

well sometimes it's nice to read a broader perspective than what is available from local media outlets

It’s not the reporters per se that have bugged me as much as what you often read in the comments page. However, I wouldn’t say that it bothers me bad enough to inspire any kind of real anger, more that it’s a bit bothersome seeing how much pleasure so many people seem to get from our team failing. It seems like there is a lot of bitterness towards the Blazers, especially on espn.com.

okay, well that was kind of a round about way to say that

but also, the Lakers have had much more success than the blazers, as much as it pains me to say it, over the life of their franchise. I guess one could make a point that the reason for the nose-rubbing by fans on these websites is jealousy, but there isn’t that much to be jealous about over the last 9 years. I think it’s become popular for fans of other teams to clown the blazers, and I’m not sure why. One thing that keeps coming up is how obnoxious all of us blazers fans supposedly are, but what’s funny is when you look at a thread on dimemag, or espn it’s much more often a fan of another team who is playing an antagonist, and goading blazers fans into defending their fanship.

If you remember the 2008 draft thread at StR

It was things like that. Jealousy usually drives a lot of this stuff. And don’t give me this crap that the Blazers are one of the bottom barrel teams in the NBA. You don’t go from Stu Inman to Geoff Petrie to Bob Whitsitt to John Nash to Kevin Pritchard and tell me Portland is a down franchise.

Sorry, but that “whoa is us” routine doesn’t make other fans care. Few teams have ever made the playoffs 21 years in a row.

who's trying to give you some crap? I didn' t say anything about some whoa is us stuff?

and btw making the playoffs twenty one years in the row doesn’t amount to much when the number of championships can be counted on ONE FINGER! It’s not like that is the same as the lakers buddy, so why don’t you go back and start this argument again and use a better example next time. Hint: avoid SA spurs, Boston Celtics, Detroit Pistons, Chicago Bulls, and any other team that’s won more than once in the last thirty years, or once in the last ten, because I’m not by this BS that the reason for all of the jealousy is an OLD playoff appearance streak, that if you have not noticed has been broken. Please don’t put words in my mouth, and don’t act like there isn’t a disproportionate amount of smack-talking about the GREG ODEN INJURY, or how stupid KP is, or how we somehow deserve this for what we did to poor Darius Miles cause that Stuff don’t jive with me!!!!

not gambling, superstar calls, or big market preference ……here is how it goes. The refs are soooooo freaking atrocious it prompts teams, coaches, management, and owners to complain about the refs and then the league makes a boatload of money from all the fines and fees.

There was a report that management talked to Nate and "reset expectations" prior to Tuesday's game

I read that away from BE. It sounded a lot like management informed Nate what they wanted to see.

I suspect without that meeting, Bayless would have been cheerleading Thursday, perhaps with Joel anchoring the middle instead.

I don't really buy that

Geoff Petrie didn’t push Rick Adelman’s hire in 1998; Jim Thomas (previous owner to the Maloof’s) did. GM’s find a way to work with the pieces they got, and they find a way to make a relationship work with the coaching staff namely the head coach.

KP and Nate Mac don’t share the same vision, and I think Nate Mac is having a harder time letting go of the reins now that the team is ready for him to do so. Made sense the last 3 years, but now it’s time more & more to let the reins go.

But, part of the style suits Brandon Roy too. You play to your players strengths, and you play to your superstar’s strengths too. It’s not always about what the fans think is best or what style the team “could” play.

I just don't see Nate ever coaching anything close to a championship defense, and he's got zero creativity or "plan B" on offense.

I hope Pritchard agrees with me that Nate will never take this team beyond the 2nd round and makes the move. We’ll see.

Coaches don't take teams to that level

Players do. Nate Mac may not be the coach to help the players get there, but the coaches in this league know the real players take you to that level. That remains to be seen that Portland’s players are good enough to go beyond the 2nd round.

Norsk noted in a comment last Tuesday that Quick said it on his radio show report. Perhaps he didn’t want to write it in print yet.

by Timmay! on Dec 19, 2009 10:20 AM PST up reply actions

Bingo!

Norsk was the original reporter in Monday’s JD.

Warning, that JD is slow to load. Here’s the text:

there has been strong communication between managmenent and the coaching staff regarding the rotation.

This team is not going to win a title this year. You hate to say it is a loss but I don’t see this team making it out of the first round so I don’t see them making rash decisions just to win a first round

He’s reporting that from the sportstwo forum, where a user transcribed Quick’s radio appearance.

"Resetting expectations"

Can also mean, don’t try to go for the most wins this year at the sake of development.

Unless there are major problems we don’t know about that haven’t been there before between the coaches and the front office, that is what I would expect the resetting of expectations to be… like how they were back when we’d play Frye over Joel. Development of key players over going for the win.

Now, it might make sense to us then that Blake will get the shaft, but because of Nate’s obvious preference for his 3 point shooting next to Roy, I will think Miller will continue to get the shaft until he isn’t getting the shaft anymore. I hope he doesn’t get the shaft much longer.

If Bayless keeps playing well, that is. He’ll get big minutes if he keeps it up. If he wanes a bit with the increased focus, Miller will play more.

But Blake is golden!

I forgot that KP and Nate met about Sergio, good catch!

This one still feels a bit different to me personally.

by Timmay! on Dec 19, 2009 10:41 AM PST up reply actions

It is different, but mostly because this year is so lame

Any coach, with expectations before the season being that we’d go deep in the playoffs, is gonna keep playing to win and not NATURALLY make the transition mid-season to making developing (with wins) as the goal. The expectations need to be changed, and made clear to any coach, if we’re making that chance— and I certainly hope we have.

We will struggle to make the playoffs, and I want us to make it, but not at someone like Bayless’ expense. Unfortunately/fortunately, he’s the only dude left to play for development’s sake, so I don’t think it really changes the focus that much.

Until we hear about deeper problems between the front office and coach (there might be some, I dunno), I’d assume it’s just a common sense change from trying to have the best record possible, to development for the future.

I guess it also means Batum will get a lot of minutes when he gets back, more than last year at least. If he’s ready. Aside from Oden, we got anyone else left to develop?

#52

by Mortimer on Dec 19, 2009 10:46 AM PST up reply actions

And also

Bayless has EARNED the expansion of his minutes with his play most of the year, so it isn’t a crude switchover from wins to development by playing him. He earned it.

#52

by Mortimer on Dec 19, 2009 10:47 AM PST up reply actions

I was with you before this post.

I was about to post basically an “I agree”. But not here.

If Bayless earned it, why did management need to tell Nate to play him? Either Bayless didn’t earn it, or Nate was refusing to acknowledge it until there was management intervention.

by Timmay! on Dec 19, 2009 10:48 AM PST up reply actions

I mean

It isn’t crass for management or the team to have Bayless play for development reasons, because his play has earned it.

#52

by Mortimer on Dec 19, 2009 10:49 AM PST up reply actions

I totally agree.

But where was the disconnect between Bayless’ play and his playing time before management stepped in?

by Timmay! on Dec 19, 2009 10:50 AM PST up reply actions

Nate, either incorrectly or wrongly

Preferred the known quantity of Blake and Dre over Bayless, and I also think Nate has become a bit flustered with Roy’s lackluster play (for him) and misplaced the blame for it on those around him— trying extra hard to make him play better… which I think is mostly misguided.

LUCKILY, there is no reason not to play Bayless, but coaches are silly and just see the game in front of them and not the big picture always.

Roy was being a jerk about Blake/Miller/SF too

Roy wanted Blake, not Bayless or Miller. At the start of the season, he had a plan for Blake staring and Miller was da kine. Not playing Bayless only pissed off Bayless and Team Bayless, not staring Blake pissed off Roy, and not staring Miller pissed of Miller and his fans. Roy > that all of those other kids.

by tominhawaii on Dec 19, 2009 11:02 AM PST up reply actions

They had said Roy and Nate had meetings over what to do

And this wasn’t specifically stated, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable that Roy and Nate agreed that Blake was the better fit for Roy and just hoped that Dre would be happy being the backup, and then figure out how Roy and him work on the fly.

With Roy and Dre being out of shape and not wanting to play everyone together in the pre-season because of injuries, we never had a chance to get them to gel, and before we knew it the real games started so we just went with what worked before.

#52

by Mortimer on Dec 19, 2009 11:11 AM PST up reply actions

KP and Friends mighta' had to tell Nate to play him more

Either directly or in subtle ways. A guy like Nate (which would be most coaches I can think of) would go with the dudes he knows over a Bayless type, so I can see management saying “look, we ain’t winning a title, we need to take a step back and think of the future right now. We aren’t expecting you to win every game”.

Thus, the Bayless.

I can totally see it being management forcing his hand, it makes perfect sense. Same for playing Frye over Joel, playing Sergio, etc. Hopefully this time it works better!

#52

by Mortimer on Dec 19, 2009 10:52 AM PST up reply actions

Can't remember who he said it too

But Nate acknowledged he wasn’t playing Joel late in games as much, even when he woulda’ been better, in favor of Frye for development reasons.

He said it was something decided by him and management, to develop and see what they got in Frye.

#52

by Mortimer on Dec 19, 2009 10:56 AM PST up reply actions

I'm not sure if that was for the best or not.

At least they knew they weren’t keeping Frye at the end of his contract.

by Timmay! on Dec 19, 2009 11:01 AM PST up reply actions

It was during the 41 win season

Another season where we weren’t necessarily trying to win every game because we didn’t think we could…

It wasn’t likely for the best, but Frye was in the 3rd year of his rookie deal, loved Portland, if he could be the backup 4/5 like we hoped… that’d be nice.

Wasn’t to be! But it was a nice try.

Honestly

it looks like Nate is unwilling to alter the gameplan to have Bayless in and not Blake. I mean, it was fairly obvious that Roy was pretty comfortable playing with Bayless, they seemed to have pretty good chemistry.

Bayless pushed the pace, hit LMA on the break, and was pretty much a 1 man fast break all night, something Steve Blake has never done. Bayless was a terror in transition.

It was one game of Roy and Bayless together

I’ll wait a few weeks of good play from Bayless and Roy together for us to change the gameplan. No one gets the gameplan changed for them until they earn it.

Nate might not be willing or able to change it from a non-Blake type, but we can’t say he is unwilling to until time has passed.

That's what really pissed me off about all the fire Nate crap

Nate was probably given a set of goals that including wins and at least the 2nd round of the playoffs. Just because Blake and Miller were playing bad, it didn’t automatically mean Bayless deserved playing time.

Nate was probably doing what he thought would get him the most win and worry about developing Bayless. Now that he has new goals, he can develop and play Bayless and the other rookies more.

by tominhawaii on Dec 19, 2009 10:56 AM PST up reply actions

Yep it's very clear they changed season expectations

Personally, I’m ok losing a few games this year to make long-term progress.

My thoughts about Nate are of a much longer-term concern than just this PG situation, but that’s a whole different topic.

by Timmay! on Dec 19, 2009 11:00 AM PST up reply actions

That's how I see it

And Nate struggled with the injuries, with Roy not playing well (and knowing we NEED HIM to play well), and it caused the constant changes in the rotation to figure out an answer.

I can’t blame him, I dunno what the answer was. I just HOPED the answer is more Bayless, more Dre, and less Blake, but I dunno if I am right.

#52

by Mortimer on Dec 19, 2009 11:01 AM PST up reply actions

I just HOPED the answer is more Bayless, more Dre, and less Blake, but I dunno if I am right.

I’m not sure we’ll know if that’s right or not. With all the injuries, I don’t know if our chances to win improve with these rotation changes.

Seems to be worth a shot though. It’s a pretty fair bet Thursday was a loss if Bayless stayed on the bench. Though Brandon’s role in the comeback (and Phoenix falling apart) is underestimated.

by Timmay! on Dec 19, 2009 11:04 AM PST up reply actions

I don't think anything we do at the PG position will make a TRUE difference

It’s alllll having Oden, and Roy and LMA playing at a higher level. The PG will help but no matter who we got there it ain’t gonna be the TRUE answer.

I do hope and have a preference for Bayless being the long term answer at PG, of course, but I don’t think anything we do this year will help us win a LOT more games this year. So, might as well develop Bayless.

I think it was more of a matter of fit. He’s another ball controller and he was already dealing with Miller and Roy.

by tominhawaii on Dec 19, 2009 11:04 AM PST up reply actions

I remember when everyone assumed Nate had a mancrush on Bayless

I actually really do think Nate would prefer Bayless to be the answer, because of his physique, his aggressiveness, and his defensive potential.

But before, we never had a problem scoring, and if Bayless ain’t scoring you couldn’t say he was offering us enough… not more than Rudy, Dre, or Blake perhaps. Hopefully that keeps changing.

forget the 3 ball. Who cares. Jerryd has been money from 18 and can get to the line.

He’s better than Blake— and a better fit— even if he never improves his 3 ball. This is a jump shooting team— what we need is someone WHO ISN’T A JUMP SHOOTER. Sorry for the emphasis, I just think its important. People think 3 point shooting is what we need from our 1, as if we don’t have enough jump shooters on this team.

If Bayless learns to shoot the 3 as well as Blake, great. It makes him a lot more dangerous. To help this team, he doesn’t even need that. He just needs to keep hitting from midrange enough for the D to respect him so that he has drivinglanes.

by timbo on Dec 19, 2009 2:42 PM PST up reply actions

They were not that extreme at all

They spend the first 6 minutes praising him, saying he could be a superstar, that he plays good defense, then Casey said he hopes he doesn’t press and expect to play like the last two days every game. They wanted to know how he could contribute if he only scores 8 points instead of 28 or if he’s playing against a better defense than the last 2 opponents. Can he still rebound and drive and dish if his shot isn’t falling? Will he stay aggressive if his shot’s not falling?

Dave said both Roy and Bayless have the same strengths and Bayless had a good game last night because also Blake and Webster were hitting their shots. Then they both said something about not wanting to make Roy a spot up shooter but it’s nice to take some load off him with Bayless. And they said Roy’s shot is dialed in and Bayless maybe not so much.

by tominhawaii on Dec 19, 2009 2:17 AM PST up reply actions

The part the bugs me is that they talk about Bayless needing to do other things to be on the floor

I was wondering what Blake does if he isn’t scoring.

They definitely did openly question the Roy/Bayless fit.

I do admit to overblowing it though.

by jksnake99 on Dec 19, 2009 2:20 AM PST up reply actions

They have a point

Bayless may have been good in short stints this season and had two breakout games, but will he still play as hard if Nate keeps him in while he’s bricking shots? Will he maintain his intensity if he’s cold and another player has the hot hand?

They say it around the 19 minute point

Basically Dave said that Blake should be the better fit for Oden because Oden could kick out to the open jump shooter and then he said but now Miller is the best point guard to fit with Oden right now, but he is not idea.

Dave was talking about how the current point guards fit with the roster, not just with Roy.

by tominhawaii on Dec 19, 2009 2:26 AM PST up reply actions

Well, what I'd like to see

Is the point guard and other run to the other basket as soon as they get the ball, if they don’t got a fast break shot off, dump it to Oden and let him go to work by either scoring, drawing a foul, or kicking the ball out of a double team to an open shooter.

Blake has trouble with the first part, Miller has trouble with the second part, and they’re not convinced Bayless will keep up his hot shooting. Bayless also has a strength of attacking the basket and they wonder how effective he can be if Oden is clogging up the paint.

I think Bayless can fit, I just can also see their point.

by tominhawaii on Dec 19, 2009 2:35 AM PST up reply actions

Miller worked beautifully with Oden-- passing and then cutting for layups. He should have been starting at PG from day 1.

Dave bases way too much of his analysis on the 3 ball.

Why can’t Bayless attack the rim and then lob to Oden when his man comes over.

I just think they are looking for ways for it not to work, when all the potential is there for it to work.

(Probably not under Nate though.)

#52

by jksnake99 on Dec 19, 2009 2:39 AM PST up reply actions

I think Oden's style of play is similar to Howard's...

Given that Oden is not nearly as good as Dwight yet, but they play similar styles. Do you think Miller works on the Magic? They seem to be obsessed with surrounding him with shooters, and it has worked very well for them. Add a Roy onto the Magic team, and you absolutely need to have guys that spread the floor at all other positions…

RUDY > MJ
#52

by Rudiculous on Dec 19, 2009 2:52 AM PST up reply actions

That's their strategy. It works for them. That's the way the chose to build around Dwight.

The idea that its the only way to play winning basketball seems absurd to me.

If you have two players who are not primarily 3 pt shooters, you need all 3 other guys to be 3 pt shooters? That just seems crazy to me.

I don’t get it.

#52

by jksnake99 on Dec 19, 2009 3:01 AM PST up reply actions

Oden is arguably a better post player and an inferior pick and roll player.

I don’t think they are that similar stylistically. Greg can hit cutters, Dwight doesn’t very well.

China has put the US in its place at the climate summit in Copenhagen. European observers see the failure of the summit as a failure for Obama.

China not only dominated the results by influencing the voting of a number of states especially in Africa (foremost Sudan, that is dependent on Chinese foreign aid), it also dominated symbolism. President Wen Jiabao was the only state leader who resided outside of the conference center in another hotel. Obama twice had to leave and travel to him to talk with Wen, the second time Wen led him wait over half an hour. He also didn’t participate in the meeting of the 25 biggest/most influential states. The minimial-compromise result of the climate summit can only be described as a disaster, almost close to worst case.

Observers say China is acting like the US and Soviet Union in the 70s and 80s, surrounding itself with vassal states (mainly a group of 70 developing countries). I’m not a politics major, but I also would see a lot of similarities to the self-conscious and ultimately arrogant behavior of fascist Germany and Japan using its massive industry and financial as well as political and military power at the beginning of the last century. Not good.

I might be a malcontent but I’m no dummy so I hopped an airplane like Ted Striker did for his girl and got in to town at 9, just in time to spiffy up, get some clean socks, and hit the clubs.

I saw her where they said she’d be. I tell you boy, she was a chest freezer: my heart stopped, the hype was unbelievably real. I sauntered up, gave her a look, doing my best not to look like a big dumb moose. We got to gabbin and I did my best and she smiled and I smiled so I said, “how bout we blow this clubhouse.” She said, “let’s do it” and we rolled. We hung out for hours and then she said, “i gotta go.” I said, “I might not be no Mr. Belvedere, but stay and I’ll do my best to serve ya.” She paused and blinked, then laughed and said, “i’m gonna take you over the rainbow, my man.”

I woke up with triangles dancin in my eyes.

Here is my proposal for the next trade drawer

You better watch out!
You better not cry!
Here’s the man who’s gonna tell you why!

I just got back from a lovely trip
along Wheeler Way!
I stopped off at the RG
to spend a holiday!

I called on dear old KP
to see what I could see,
he took me in his office
an’ told his plans to me!

So! You better watch out, better not cry
better not pout, I’m tellin’ you why
KP is Movin’ em out!

He’s makin’ a list an’ checkin’ it twice
gonna find out who’s naughty an’ nice
KP is Movin’ em out!

He sees Them when they’re sleepin’ ( he sees you! )
he knows when they’re awake ( he knows! )
he knows if they’ve been bad or good
so be good for goodness sake!

So, you better watch out, you better not cry
better not pout, I’m tellin’ you why
KP is Movin’ em out!

With pick n rolls and give n goes,
pushing it up an’ ally oops!
KP is Movin’ em out!

and 31 team to move them to,
point guards, centers and PF’s too!
KP, ……KP,
KP is Movin’…..
… Movin’ em out!

The kids in Blazer’s Edge land
will have a jubilee!
They’re gonna build a fantasy roster
all around the Christmas tree!

So! You better watch out, better not cry
better not pout, I’m tellin’ you why;
KP is Movin’ . . .
…is Movin’ em out!

The Wall hype should be tempered a bit. He’s playing in a schoolyard system, is extremely prone to dumb turnovers, and fails to finish layups at the basket after making incredible moves to get there.

Sure, he will be tremendous, but the announcers fawn over him and ignore the fact that Kentucky is good not only because of Wall, but because of their tremendous rebounding and inside play that can erase his mistakes.

I really liked what I saw

He way passes my “like how he moves” test and has great natural ability.

It is annoying to watch him with announcers, though, because they marvel at the stupidest stuff… an elbow jumper going in and whatnot.

My first impression watching him a little bit is that he’ll be a star, but he’s wild… like Wade. Not as big, muscle wise, as Wade though.

#52

by Mortimer on Dec 19, 2009 3:00 PM PST up reply actions

he will be a terrific NBA player, maybe like an Evans in being better in the pros than in college.

Blogabull pins the blame on him deciding before the play whether he’ll pass or score, and not being able to think fluidly during the play.

I can't explain it

But before he was drafted, I just didn’t like his eyes. They seemed unintelligent to me.

Just something about the eyes… kinda dead inside to me. I dunno.

This proves or means nothing, of course. I did mention it on here before the draft, so if he ends up a dummy, I called it.

#52

by Mortimer on Dec 19, 2009 3:05 PM PST up reply actions

that’s a good way of putting it. My “unfocused” comment is better explained as his eyes just seeming dead. There are a few players I associate with that look, but I’m having trouble placing it right now.

Dear Steve Blake

When the game is tied with 6 minutest left in the 4th Quarter, and you have a 3-on-1 fast break, DO NOT TRY AND ALLEY OOP IT TO YOUR 6’3" TEAMMATE FROM HALF COURT. Make a solid bounce pass, let him collect the ball and get the easy dunk.

Dear Nate McMillan,

A blind monkey could have seen that a lineup featuring 3 point guards — all under 6’4" — and a shooting guard was not going to have success against a team featuring the most dominant big man in the league. Yet you decided to force all of your loyal fans to sit through nearly an entire 4th quarter with that lineup on the floor. Death by Tubby, I mean Anthony Johnson, and JJ REdick is one of the worst possible ways to lose, believe me.

Best Regards,

Ya know I just happened to re-read this

And D-Ho didn’t hurt us much at all, and we were trying to get SOME sort of offense where someone could hit a jumper. With LMA playing like turds, the 4 guard lineup made some sense to me— against this team, with Rashard at PF.

I didn’t think it hurt us, aside from no one being able to hit a shot. Dwight Howard certainly didn’t win the game, he got PRZYBILLIZED.

That's weak sauce

I just finished watching the game.

Your “Dear Steve Blake” should be “Dear Jerryd Bayless.”

When there is only 1.6 to go in the 3rd quarter and you are up by three, keep between J.J. Redick and the inbound pass and when you do a stutter step to catch an alley oop from Blake with 6 minutes left in the 4th and you can’t make the shot, at least come down with the ball.

I’m all about hating on Bayless, and I’m not hating on him now for fun, those were big time bad plays by Jerryd.

by tominhawaii on Dec 20, 2009 12:10 PM PST up reply actions

I got video of it too but it is poor quality

If I need to make a better one, I will.

Bayless adjusts his stride at the 3 point line for an alley oop. If Blake would have turned around at the top of the key and waited for everyone else, fans would be pissed that he missed a “Wide Open Bayless for a Jam.”

In the East we would be 5th. In the West we are clinging to 8th place as the worst "above .500" team.

If we’re lucky OKC, Clippers, Hornets, Kings stay at around where they are now. We get Batum and Rudy back. And maybe manage to avoid the Lakers in the first round. Or maybe we shouldn’t, and try to pull off an upset that would be at least a big moral victory.

Petteri is much improved in his scoring and in the minutes he gets. Not that much in assists though.

He has added 20% to his 3 point shooting! Now at just under 45%, while increasing the number of attempts to 3 per game. Almost Rudy-esque. Also added 10% to his 2 point shots. Draws 4 times as many fouls, and added 4% there too. And only gets 2 fouls per game with very good defense. PER only around 15 though, which isn’t amazing and a bit surprising considering his shooting stats. Probably would have to increase his assists and rebounds to get higher. He’s averaging as many steals as assists (1.4).

by Norsktroll on Dec 19, 2009 9:06 PM PST reply actions

Do you think him or Joel will ever actually come over?

Or are they bound to be trade fodder or simply released?

by Timmay! on Dec 19, 2009 9:08 PM PST up reply actions

None of them will come over unless he gets "guaranteed" playing time

I could see one Joel replacing the other if Joel P. decides to move on. Or come on board if they pretty much make him the backup to LaMarcus. They would probably have to use a part of the MLE though, he’s unlikely to go for his rookie scale deal that is much worse than his current contract. Claver would probably want to see Martell or Travis gone before he comes, and I wouldn’t expect him for at least 2 more years. Petteri is a borderline NBA player. His defense and ability to play both guard spots might keep him in the Blazers’ plans. He brings something different to the table than what we currently have.

by Norsktroll on Dec 19, 2009 9:12 PM PST up reply actions

Hmmm. Two years for Claver? Ouch.

In retrospect, is he good enough to justify that wait, when alternative draft options were Casspi, Beaubois, Blair, or even Budinger?

by Timmay! on Dec 19, 2009 9:17 PM PST up reply actions

I think KP drafted him precisely because he could stash him away for later. Casspi wanted to play right now, and with Nic, Travis and Martell and finding more time for Rudy that would have been nearly impossible.

by Norsktroll on Dec 19, 2009 9:19 PM PST up reply actions

That's a tough one. Patty Mills is in the 15th spot instead.

But Casspi wouldn’t have sniffed playing time if injuries hadn’t come up, so at least we have a player who can develop overseas. I see your point.

by Timmay! on Dec 19, 2009 9:22 PM PST up reply actions

Last in the first, very similar to where Petteri got picked (+/- 1)

But since we already have him for 3 seasons without signing, that opens a loophole in the current CBA to sign him for more than the rookie scale deal with either cap space or according to reports from the Rubio negotiations the MLE. They would have to give him a guaranteed 3-year deal though.

The first team to try that will likely be the Spurs next summer, with Tiago Splitter to play alongside Duncan and eventually replace him. Magic, Wolves, Blazers, Spurs, Pacers (?) all have an interest to keep that rule in place in the next CBA. And Wolves owner Taylor heads the committee for that.

by Norsktroll on Dec 19, 2009 9:27 PM PST up reply actions

They would have to give him a guaranteed 3-year deal though.

Freeland is not yet good enough to justify that commitment yet, correct?

by Timmay! on Dec 19, 2009 9:30 PM PST up reply actions

Depends. It's only 1 year more than he would get in any case as a first round pick.

I think he has a lot of potential. Think David Lee, only 6’11" tall. That’s pretty interesting to at least continue to observe. I wouldn’t throw him lightly into trades unless it brings a certified stud back.

by Norsktroll on Dec 19, 2009 9:31 PM PST up reply actions

Mentioning that he “regressed” a bit above is relative. He’s still posting a PER around 21 in both the ACB and the Euroleague. Last season he still played Eurocup against inferior competition, and less minutes. He could be ready for the NBA in a year or two.

by Norsktroll on Dec 19, 2009 9:34 PM PST up reply actions

Ouch, Claver is Omri Casspi light this year. Better 2P% (60%) than FT% (59%). And regressed in 3P%.

He’s playing more minutes than ever though, so maybe he has to get used to his playing time.

by Norsktroll on Dec 19, 2009 9:18 PM PST up reply actions

I think the Euro perception that Rudy,Sergio and to a lesser extent Nic

Have been getting the short end of the stick as far as minutes from Nate would have to enter into equation for our Euros and a new coach would change the equation

by southern oregon on Dec 19, 2009 9:17 PM PST up reply actions

Hrm. That could be interesting if true.

Both Rudy and Sergio have expressed feelings of discontent already, but for various reasons (Rudy due to recruiting Hedo, Sergio for playing time/system issues)

I’ve already used up my quota of coaching conversation (for the week probably!), but I would not like to be in a situation where we need to decide between having either our current coaching staff or European players, but not both. I’m not placing fault on either side, just wondering if they could become mutually exclusive.

by Timmay! on Dec 19, 2009 9:29 PM PST up reply actions

A healthy Rudy could do good things for us if his back kept him from being as mobile as he was last year. He definitely is another threat from deep who would be nice to use alongside Miller or Bayless. It’s funny that instead of an overflow of talent at SF we now seem to have too many guards.

by Timmay! on Dec 19, 2009 11:31 PM PST reply actions

I didn’t feel like this loss was as bad as some make it out to be.

For one, I thought the effort was there. If you look at this game from a different angle , if not for that 2 minute stretch Orlando had we’re even with a team sporting the 3rd best record in the league on their court. And to be even with a team who’s beating us 54-35 on the boards is unlikely. I don’t think anybody wins much with just that one stat in disparity.

So time verses score we’re in it the whole way except for those two minutes. I guess what I take from this, is that if anything else at all would have been going right for the Blazers we likely pull out a tough win on the road. Somewhere in all that ugliness is a silver lining.

Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."

2 minutes? You mean the 5:22 we were scoreless in the 4th?

we played them a really good three quarters, dwight didn’t have a great night though was allowed to hammer our guys repeatedly, and Vince played horribly. We should’ve taken advantage more. Definitely not the worst game, but I think it’s disappointing to let a winnable game go.

Naw, probably a bit better than that.

I think we would have lost at Cleveland. I could be wrong, but I think they could have elevated higher. I don’t think Travis or Nic would mean enough to slowing LeBron down the stretch. Then, again, who knows if Nate would still be playing 3-4 guard lineups. I’d hope not and that the loss of Travis is why we are seeing more lineups like this.

Winning at Milwaukee seems likely. Plus, Memphis or Miami at home. I can see why 20-8 is a good guess.

meh, I can justify it only in that I don’t put any effort into it, and I find it amusing… I always root for the Blazers regardless of what I predict

I dont know if I have ever actually predicted a blazers loss, even when I expect one...

I just dont have the heart to do it, which probably explains why I dont really enter that often…

I figure if I predict a loss… and they win, I’m happy… if I predict a win, and they lose I’m not happy… I’d rather be happy than not happy

No junk for you......one year.

Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."

The fricken game on my NBA TV recording has no audio

The jerks in the beginning have sound and then it goes away about a minutes before the game starts. I stopped at half time and might watch the second half tomorrow.

Do ya know what would be funny?

What if ATF looks just like Palin? What would maybe be a blessing before is now a curse for poor ATF.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
