Would you trade Jerryd Bayless for Glen Davis 1 on 1 if it was possible?
So, I am an unabashed Celtic fan and am having a conversation with a fellow Celtic fan on Celticsblog.com regarding what the Blazers would do right now if they could. So I am wondering Blazers fans, given the state of injury in Portland and the fact that your first big man off the bench is(gulp) Juwan Howard, if Kevin Pritchard could trade for Glen Davis 1 on 1 in a trade for Jerryd Bayless, right now, with no other strings attached, would he do it?
I understand Bayless has looked okay in the last few games and even just had a career night last night, but would Pritchard trade his current third string PG for a young player that has shown he can play two big man positions, which is something that with Oden out for the year, the Trailblazers could really use? Thanks ahead of the time for all your great thoughts and input.

The Blazers are hammered inside because of injuries. This will pass. Getting rid of Bayless is forever.

You forgot Outlaw
Also not big but long, and his defense was improved this year.

this. Big Baby is the absolute opposite of the 'toughness' we want, and I can't think of a backup PF I am willing to get in exchange for Bayless.
You can measure skill and talent with your eyes, but productivity is shown through statistics.
hmmm. I don't know that I would but that is interesting.
You should use my trade drawer though.

How about you trade us Rondo for Martell Webster?

Blake
They definitely would want Blake over Miller. He’s like a poor man’s Ray Allen (a really, really poor man).

Is this a joke?
Yeah, the team could use a big body inside but I would never give up a player of Bayless’ potential for a guy that will never be better than average like Davis.
Is Davis even average?
He’s great off the bench, but I wouldn’t ever want to start him. Could you call a better-than-average reserve guy “average”?

I'm not necessarily
Completely opposed to moving Bayless for the right piece, but Glen Davis is NOT the right piece. Blech.

LOL
A thousand times no.
Davis isn’t much of an upgrade over… um… anybody.
Personally, I wouldn’t trade Bayless for Rondo one for one. And although others around here would likely disagree, I mean it 100%. Bayless is a much more versatile player. Rondo is great playing with three potential HOFers. On any other team his lack of a jumpshot would be more problematic.
Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.
I respectfully disagree
He had a great game last night, but Rondo is better. He’s an elite defender, better passer, and better rebounder. He would be our point guard for the the next 8-10 years if we made the trade.
16.9 points, 9.7 rebounds and 9.8 assists These are his averages for last year’s postseason.

Rondo is a self-centered buttcrack.

I expect that's the conventional wisdom
And I agree, of course, that Rondo is much better overall right now.
In fact, I’m sure most NBA “experts” would laugh at the suggestion that they have anything close to equal trade value.
I’m not claiming to be objective, but I like Bayless going forward as the perfect compliment to Brandon Roy, I love his intensity, I love his intensity, and I love his work ethic. Rondo is apparently a bit of a headcase even with KG and company to keep his attitude in check. And even though Rondo is years ahead, there are already some aspects of Bayless’ game Rondo can’t touch (scoring, attacking the bucket, and pretty soon, outside shooting).
Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.
I meant compl-e-ment, of course...
Although I’m sure Jerryd compliments Brandon frequently, as well. “Your jumpshot looks great today, Mr. Roy…”
Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.
I agree with that
He and Brandon looked good last night.
I hope this continues and that Bayless sees a lot more playing time. I was only trying to be objective in my comment. In reality I love Bayless and hope he continues to impress.

wow.
Rondo is the 2nd best PG in the league IMO. Amazing defender. Best defensive PG by far.

This is not obvious to me
I know Rondo is miles ahead of Bayless right now. Reasons to hesitate:
1. We don’t know how big the defensive gap between Rondo and Bayless is going to be in two years. Rondo will probably be significantly better still, but that gap should narrow to some extent.
2. Bayless is younger.
3. Bayless is a much better offensive fit because he can shoot. That is very significant in keeping the middle open for Bayless/Rondo (whichever one) to slash, for Roy to slash, and to keep defenses from collapsing on Oden.
4. Bayless, by all accounts, is a much better culture fit.
Today, I’d take Rondo in a heartbeat. But while we might contend next year, our real window is probably two years away.

Those are the exact same reasons people said they wouldn't trade Bayless for Devin Harris.
Rondo for Bayless would be a no brainer.
by Nick Van Excellent on Dec 19, 2009 7:51 AM PST up reply actions
The defensive gap may narrow some
But Rondo’s wingspan will pretty much mean as long as he’s trying hard, he’ll always be a superior defender, given that he’s at least as quick, if not quicker than Bayless.
As far as the offense goes, Rondo’s thrived the last couple years playing alongside one ball-dominant wing (Pierce), one wing whose primary strength is shooting (Allen), one stretch 4 (KG), and one powerful center without a refined offensive game (Perkins). I’m not sure you could pick a team with four guys that better mirrors our own situation here.

Agreed
I’d trade LA for Rondo in a heart beat, although traditional nonsense says never trade big for a small.
52 + 88 = 140% better team.
That's just insane
Basically you are saying you’d rather have Juwan Howard as your starting power forward than LaMarcus Aldrige and a team with 5 point guards, one center, and an half a power forward. Rondo cannot back up Joel and Juwan.
I'm not thinking just this year if I am doing this, obviously.
Unless we are going to win a championship this year, I believe it’s more important to lay the foundation for future contention. Ball-hawking PG with at-the-rim skills that fits in age-wise with rest of our players is a legit championship piece compared to fadeaway and 20’ shooting, average defending, mediocre rebounding PF.
52 + 88 = 140% better team.
Anyway, it's practically undoable due to PP status for both
Just that I think Rondo is superior to LA.
52 + 88 = 140% better team.
Agreed, but I still keep a big. I'm not convinced we need a ball-dominant point--in fact, I suspect a two combo-guard lineup (Roy & Bayless, assuming he gets better) is in our future.
If Rondo doesn't work with Roy, I suspect theere are bigger issues with Roy than Rondo.
Considering that Rondo worked fine with Allen, Pierce, and KG, 3 guys that need the ball, I doubt Rondo will have trouble working with Roy even if he is ball-dominant. Perhaps Roy goes to put more work off-the-ball, especially since he was rated “excellent” when coming off screens for catch-and-shoot. Our perimeter defense is horrid and really, the only one that can really help in this area currently is Batum.
Rondo for Aldridge is practically an impossible move, due to their PP status. I’m just saying if it was possible, I’d do this. Obviously, future moves have to be made (trade Miller and probably Rudy for a big) but my point is that Rondo is a superior player than LA.
52 + 88 = 140% better team.
Sorry, but I really did laugh out loud at this, and I never type that out.
I’m not saying your trade sounds ludicrous (particularly if you line out career stats and all), it’s just really funny considering the timing, i.e. breakout performance on national tv, but unproven over longer stretches.
Kudos to the Jedi mind trick sales pitch, though: “I understand Bayless has looked okay in the last few games and even just had a career night last night, but would Pritchard trade his current third string PG for a young player that has shown he can play two big man positions.”
It’s like the national audience got to see Bayless last night, but thinks we might have missed it, or just don’t understand what kind of potential a performance like last night hints at.
Celt GM: Did you see Bayless last night? He had a heck of game. Looks like some serious upside.
Celt Scout: Yeah, I noticed that. Wonder what it would take to get him. I can tell by that one game that he could be really good in the future. You don’t think Portland’s staff sees it that way after last night do you?
Celt GM: Naw, I think they like point guards that camp out in the corner, and maybe their tape review equipment is broken or something. Just offer them Big Baby and make sure you mention that he can play two positions. Oh, and make sure every time you say “Bayless” you call him “your third string point guard, Bayless.”

I could see Pritchard making this deal
…after having smoked an entire mansion’s worth of Damon’s finest.
I can imgine Nate weighing in his opinion like this:
Kevin: Yo Nate, I just got off the phone with Danny Ainge and he offered Glen ‘Big Baby’ Davis for Jerryd Bayless. What do you think?
Nate: Did they ask for anyone else? Aldridge? Roy? Blake?
Kevin: No just Bayless. So?
Nate: You can trade whoever you want but you gotta let me have Steve Blake. By the way did you get any offers for Andre yet?
Kevin: No still working the phone lines, I just don’t get it.
Nate: Don’t get what?
Kevin: Why we haven’t had a single offer for Andre Miller? I mean I offered him a $7 million dollar a year contract so he must be real good right?
Nate: Well he’s not Blake so he can’t be that good. What kind of offers are we getting for Steve? Nash? Deron Williams? No wait I got it, Chris Paul right?
Kevin: HUMM, yeah sure Nate Chris Paul. Sure.
This would be like buying a candy bar for $1,000,000,000
Instant gratification for a sound investment.
Isn't Glen Davis your mascot or something?
I guess I should put it this way: I wouldn’t want Glen Davis on the Blazers for free, so no, there is no Blazer I would trade for him.
It’s not that I hate him, he just sucks. Like the entire Boston Celtics do after their big four.
In Bayless I trust.

Can someone give a rational explanation of why blake plays 36 minutes a game?
Oh c'mon guys
You thought this was a serious trade proposal? This was a well placed piece of bait.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

I mean, we’re not talking ‘bout Paul Pierce, we’re talking ‘bout Glen Davis. We’re not even talking about Rajon Rondo or Ray Allen, we’re talking about Glen Davis. How can I make my team better by Davis? I mean how silly is that?

We sitting in here, we supposed to be a play-off team and we in here talking bout Glen Davis?
You can measure skill and talent with your eyes, but productivity is shown through statistics.
I think a lot of people here are forgetting about his championship experience
I’d say KP owe Ange because of the Telfair trade, but then he did that Darius junk so they’re even.

If we're looking for championship experience
We should really be after Adam Morrison.
Just because someone played for a champion, doesn’t mean they had anything to do with it.
Not Bayless, who goes out there and dies for us, and plays every game like its his last, not Bayless, we talkin’ bout Glen Davis. Now I know bigs need to be there and lead by example, I know that. I know that. I’m not shovin’ that aside. I know size’s important, I know that, I honestly know that. But were talking about Glen Davis!
That picture reminds me of George from Seinfeld.

Except way different and less disturbing.

Check the recent comments on here over the last few days and you'll realize that most Blazer fans wouldn't trade Bayless for Chris Paul straight up.
Wanted to thank everyone here
I appreciate all the comments and see that some things are truly universal. Fans way over value their young players across all sports and locations I see. We do in Boston too. There are actually probably people over at Celticsblog that wouldn’t trade Lester Hudson for Bayless. That’s a true comment.
I wonder though how many of you might rethink the proposal though given that Juwan Howard is now your starting center for the remaining season and that you have Shavlik Randolph as your backup big. Your a playoff team right now but running out Howard and Randolph as your starting and backup centers is going to fail you soon enough.
Personally, I think Portland should try to get Zydrunas Ilgauskas from Cleveland, maybe in a three way with Jamison going to Cleveland and Portland sending bodies and picks Washington’s way.
Thanks again for the imput guys.
Fans will always overvalue their own players...
Just the way its always been and always will be. That said with the recent explosion by Bayless it’d take an absolutely huge name to make me feel good about trading him. I see absolute superstar potential in him right now.
