One Win = No Trade Drawer???? 12/18/09
What we win one game and the endless amount of trade drawers and trade posts suddenly stop? Don't get my wrong it was a great win last night but there are still some weaknesses on the Blazers team. Most notably as was pointed out by the great (and angry) Sir Charles himself is the lack of a deep post scoring threat. Let's face it folks, LMA is a good player but it is painfully obvious that the guy would rather fade away than get to the hoop. The up and under worked well for him last night but he went away from it for no real reason that was apparent to me. So my proposed trade to get the trade discussion started on this slow Friday afternoon is this. Trade LMA, Steve Blake, and Travis Outlaw to Toronto for Chris Bosh.
Why the Blazers do it: The Blazers badly need a reliable low post presence. Oden is coming along fine but to have him be the only player on the team that can score near the bucket is the definition of putting all your eggs in one basket. I won't call Oden a fragile basket but we are really not sure what kind of a basket we have right now (sorry for the metaphor). Blake is expendable if Bayless can find consistency as Rudy has many of the same skills which Blake possesses. If we were to lose LMA it would be nice to keep Outlaw as a stretch 4 but I wasn't sure if there was another way to work the trade and getting rid of both Miller and Blake seems risky. The risk in this whole trade is would Bosh sign up with Portland. We would have the Bird rights and I believe (not sure on this) be able to offer him more than other teams. One question I am not sure of is how Oden and Bosh would fit together on the court together?
Why Toronto doe is: Besides Euros no one wants to play in Toronto the taxes there are bad I hear. Toronto cannot be very confident in Bosh staying based on the play so far. If they got LMA he would be stuck there for 4 years. Outlaw and Blake would come off the books and might help them over the summer to save some money or sign a free agent. Although I really don't know much about their financial situation.
Anyway I am not trying to throw LMA under the bus. He is a great young player and I am sure his post game will continue to improve. I was just throwing out an idea to get some discussion going. Please don't hate on me if this post makes me look like a complete fool. I really like Bosh's game and think he is more physical than LMA which would be huge come playoff time. I don't think Bosh would get dominated (okay that might be a slight stretch, sorry LMA) by Scola in the playoffs. Let me know if this works and what your thoughts are. Also I am curious about the usual trades involving either Miller or Blake. Any and all ideas are fun to discuss.

just because someone is under a long contract doesn't mean it's going to work out (Stephen Jackson)
Toronto would be better off getting guys on their rookie contracts rather than starting their first big contract. It seems like Toronto could do better than a point guard they don’t need, an injured SF they don’t need and one solid player.
Also Bosh might just leave Portland next summer in that situation leaving the Blazers without anyone. It would be like just giving LMA away to rent Bosh for a half of a season. He wouldn’t have any time to play with Greg to gel and everybody is going to be throwing big money him.
I like Bosh but no deal.
Could the Blazers get Toronto to sign Bosh to an extension before the trade?
as part of the trade? As far as gelling, Greg hasn’t had time to gel with anyone really. He is still finding his own game. My question was more as to whether two dominant post players could coexist on the floor together not so much that they would immediately have chemistry.
No. The deadline for extensions has passed. If we acquired Bosh before the deadline he would be an UFA at the end of the season.
The only safe way to acquire Bosh would be through a sign and trade in this off-season, which is unlikely, being that he has been pretty vocal about wanting to play either next to Wade or Lebron.

oh okay...
I think my idea has been thoroughly shot down. I really think that we should make some big sacrifices to birng in a legit post presence like Bosh though even if it means sacrificing LMA.
Bosh is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
If we make this trade we are giving away LMA, Blake, and Outlaw to have Bosh play half a season for us.

Also LMA is very difficult to trade. He has a poison pill provision ( as does Roy ) after signing the extension.

according to the Trade Machine
the trade works and it factors in the Poison Pill Provision.
I am sure the Blazers will want to know he will resign if they were to do it. If Bosh ends up hooking up with Wade or LeBron what does that do our championship window?
Bosh and Wade would be pretty formidable. I'm more worried about a Wade / Lebron combo. That could be devastating.

If we did do my crazy trade...
what are the chances in your opinion Bosh would resign? I believe the team that holds the Bird rights can offer more money but I am not sure.
I think the team that holds Bird rights can offer more salary.
Who knows if he would stay. Maybe he loves the culture, and playing next to Roy and our guard rotation. Maybe he hates Portland. Maybe he stays for more money.

I can't get the trade machine link to work, but it worked on the machine, so here's my idea. Everyone loves a 3 way.
Portland gets Emeka Okafor and Devean George ( from Golden State ), while sending out Outlaw and Miller.
New Orleans gets Ronny Turiaf and Outlaw, while sending out Okafor. ( and our extra second round pick this year, and first round pick next year )
Golden State gets Andre Miller while sending out Turiaf.
Portland does this trade to strengthen our front court with Okafor, get more points in the paint, and more insurance in case of another Oden injury. George was added just to make salaries match. Yeah it would hurt to trade Miller ( especially so soon ), but this is a chance to get a quality big, and he would be locked up for 5 years at 10 miilion / yr, a pretty good salary for someone who averages 11 and 10, and 2 blks.
New Orleans does this trade to get rid of Okafors contract, as they have been shopping him this season ( according to multiple NBA rumors sites ). They are WAY over the cap and struggling financially. They need to cut salary, especially while their record is less than stellar. They get a decent young big in Turiaf, an expiring contract, and draft picks. Not too terrible.
Golden State does it to get Andre Miller, who would more than likely flourish under a true run and gun system like Golden State, and it would free up more minutes for their other young up-and-coming big Anthony Randolph.

Respectfully disagree on these interesting suggestions
While we can definitely use a low post player, it doesn’t need to be a back to the post player. A hustler and fighter like Ronny Turiaff would be enough. We can get him without shaking out the whole team when they are in a fragile state. We can probably deal for Brandon Bass for the same kind of physical play around the rim and get him reasonably. Now, who wouldn’t like Bosh? Really, he’s a great player but is he the answer. I’d rather trade for Carl Landry or Shane Battier. All my choices are fighters, rebounders, block-out specialists who control their space or lock down their opponent. The Blazers need some guts not more scoring.
