Jerryd Bayless - Where Do We Go From Here?

Oh what a difference a game makes Blazer fans!  Until last night, Jerryd Bayless was somewhat of an enigma - a young player with obvious talent that hadn't seen enough time or opportunities to really define where he was as a player and what his NBA potential could really be.  We had read the articles about his work ethic, focus, intense competitive nature - the side work he did with coaches brought in specifically to work with him on shooting and ball-handling skills...and we had seen moments, or spurts if you will, where Jerryd gave us a glimpse of the potential star-player qualities he possessed.  But until last night, outside of the circles of intense Blazer fans, he was widely regarded as just that, an emerging talent that was largely unproven.

Now I'm not saying a single game warrants elevating him to a new pedestal, but it's also important not to underestimate the effect that a performance like his, on national television against a legitimate Western Conference contender, can make on his fledgling career.  While I am not surprised that Nate claimed he hasn't considered changing Rex's position in the rotation, I do believe his play against Phoenix is going to light a bit of a fire under a couple of angles in regards to Bayless and his future...

1)  How do the Blazers NOT give him more minutes now?

As Dave eluded in his post-game summary, what Bayless gave this team was something that seemed to be leaving us more and more on a daily basis - hope and excitement.  In a young season that has already seen us lose 2 starters and our 2 top reserves to injury for long periods of time, coupled with a somewhat disappointing and lackluster start  by our players that are healthy, Bayless provided the spark and "tingle" that we needed so desperately.  Which leads to my point above, how does this team, management, and coaching staff not give him more time on the floor right now?  With a fan base that now will be rabidly demanding to see him more, the uninspiring play of Andre Miller and Steve Blake so far, and the relative lack of another option, I just don't see how they can not play him more moving forward.  Not to mention, he seems to be a smashing compliment to Brandon Roy - even more so than Blake- a guy who can stroke the deep jumper when the defense collapses on Roy, attack when it is out of position or slow to recover (keeping some wear an tear of Brandon), and that CAN ACTUALLY DEFEND AND STAY IN FRONT OF other point guards...

2)  If they don't end up giving him more minutes - he now has even more clout to want to play elsewhere

There recently have been rumors circulating that Bayless had asked to be traded, even though those ave largely been proven to be untrue.  But now the question becomes: If the Blazers stick to Miller and Blake getting the most run, with Rudy seeing a lot of minutes when he comes back, is Jerryd wrong to want to play elsewhere?  The guy has worked hard and done - at least from what we can see, pretty much everything the team has asked of him.  And compounding that, he has now shown on a national stage, that he is capable of being a big-time NBA player.  Once again, I'm not saying that one game changes everything, but at the same time it sort of does.  He showed the ability to push tempo, attack the basket, hit the open jumper from deep, and play great defense.  Those skills are not flukish, but more of a sign of things to come.  If the Blazers are not willing to let him fully showcase them here, I can't blame the guy for wanting to go somewhere where he can, which leads to my next point...

3)  The rest of the league has now seen what he can do - confirming what they already knew

Remember, Jerryd was the 11th pick in the draft, but leading up to the draft was rated as a top-5 prospect.  Derrick Rose and Michael Beasley were the consensus 1-2, but after that, Bayless was rated right next to Russell Westbrook and OJ Mayo in that next tier.  He "slipped" to Indiana, and the only reason they traded him was because they were loaded at the point and coveted a wing stopper in Brandon Rush.  But the league in general knows how good this guy really is, and you have to think that several teams have been sitting back and scheming on how to pluck him from the abundantly-talented Blazers roster when the time is right.  Last night's game only made that even more of a reality.  While most GMs and team personnel would base their evaluation off of his entire body of work, including his time at Arizona, you just can't underestimate the effect and resulting hype of a huge performance on a national stage can have.  Now fans in other NBA cities will start the "How do we get Bayless", "If we got Jerryd Bayless we would be that much better" proclamations, as they know very well that he is not, as of now, a featured member of our rotation, and more of a luxury chip we have waiting for us on the bench if we need him.  In short, if GMs and personnel people around the league had forgotten about him at all, they were reminded last night.

So we either to get this guy on the floor A LOT more, or realize the possibility that he could take his talents elsewhere if we don't.

I was at the Sacto game

And I could see this game coming. Something went “click” for Jerryd against the Kings during the 4th quarter, and he took that and ran with it.

I know less than half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Been waiting for a performance like last night ever since we drafted the guy, and loved it.

What I think this means for us is that we could have a POTENT 3 guard rotation next year ( and coming years for that matter ) of Roy, Rudy, and Jarryd. That would be a nightmare back court for almost any team to match up against. All 3 can make plays, set up other players, drive, and shoot. Management has to see that this is the future, don’t they? I like Blake and all, and he hit some big shots last night, but I see great things coming from Roy, Rudy, and Jarryd.

Agreed

Patty Mills would work well with both roy and rudy. He wont get any burn any time soon though. I’m hoping Blake will get traded soon (great guy, but gotta open up time) and Mills will get some decent time at 3rd point guard.

Portland could coast along with their superior talent and stay right with us. Now that Portland woke up, the hammer cometh down.

Not to make this a trade thread but

This game showed us that we can safely trade Steve Blake. We should start Rex alongside Roy and have Miller, with his considerable skills but lack of synergy with Roy, lead the second unit.

Yeah

but I don’t think anyone is going to offer us a “can’t wait, too good to turn down” deal for Blake.

Blake just is in a deep rut, and he's not getting out of it soon

I know the 3-point shooting will be lacked, but seriously, he’s not that important, especially if they get a legit big or a decent combo forward in return (I don’t see Outlaw staying in the Rose Garden)

Miller has shown that he is not a good backup

If you want Bayless to start, you have to trade Miller.

Nice post, however I want to vigorously disagree with one point....

…..you and others have talked about this as some kind of a breakout or career changing game. I don’t think so.

Here is the reason, and why it matters:

1) Bayless didn’t do anything last night, or the game before, that he hasn’t done all season. He has been scoring, and scoring efficiently, all season. Go back and look at the game splits. His per minute production has been amazingly consistent for a young guy who has seen his PT bounce around like a ping pong ball.

2) If last night had truly been “something completely different,” we would have to ask if it was a fluke or if he could do it again. The fact that he has been scoring in bunches and highly efficiently means we simply need to put him on the floor. Of coarse, he isn’t going to shoot that well every game, and other teams are going to start scheming to stop him, but there is every reason to believe that he will continue to be effective.

The strength, speed, and athleticism have been there from the beginning. Most defenders struggle to stay in front of him. What has changed is that his decision making has gotten much better. Last year you could often see the gears grinding and that bit of hesitation really hurt his game. Of coarse the other thing that has changed is that his retooled shot is starting to fall. Bayless has a history of being an extremely good shooter. Last year he was trying too hard, and then when he started missing his confidence wavered and hesitation seeped into his shot. We see the same thing with Blake this season. He is thinking too much “should I take this shot, or should I pas it up.” Thinking too much is the enemy of muscle memory.

Regarding the possibility of trading Bayless? Let me put this delicately, ARE YOU NUTS? KP would have to be certifiably insane to trade Bayless at this point. You do not trade away the guy who looks like he is a good bet to fill your biggest long term roster whole.

If I were KP, once Rudy came back, I would trade Blake and his expiring contract. Blake can be combined with a wide variety of other assets to acquire a stellar 4-5 back-up. I don’t begin to understand Nate’s Stevophilia.

What I do see is that by next season, we should be shooting to start Bayless (maybe sooner). Miller is a much better fit with the shooters in the second unit than is Blake. Webster and Rudy are most effective as three point shooters just like Steve. The second unit needs a penetrating playmaker, whether that is Miller of Bayless remains to be seen, but penetrating playmaker is certainly not a description that fits Blake.

in response to your "vigorous disagreement"

first, I am not nuts (and I don’t like your tone there dude!) and I never once suggested that we trade him. What I said was that if anyone around the league had lost sight of him, they were reminded big time last night. Also, Jerryd now has more clout in demanding playing time, since he showed he can produce on the big stage, and if he DOESN’T get it, he has more leverage in looking to get it elsewhere, and more interested parties in obtaining his services

Second, I never used the words “breakout game” or “career changing game”….in fact several times I specifically state that one game doesn’t warrant changes or for him to be elevated to any kind of pedestal. What I said was that that game put him at the forefront a little more, and that other teams and fans, including our own, are now much more aware of him and his potential, and has them eying his future more than they were before that game, which is totally true

Sorry if I got a little carried away with my rhetorical flourishes.

I thought I was being funny. Need to sign up for the Tom in Hawaii, Summer Camp for Basketball Humor.

It was clear from your post that you are supportive of Bayless getting more time. You did not say so explicitly, but I assumed you were not really advocating that he be traded just bringing up the issue of him needing minutes or possibly running out of patience. I think we are pretty much in agreement.

I will stick with my point that Bayless didn’t do anything last night that he hasn’t been doing in much smaller doses all season.

scheming to stop Bayless

keeps the double off Roy and LMA, no?

Also, loved, loved, LOVED the look-away ally oop to LMA!

I have to disagree

Bayless has been mostly one dimensional in the past. This game he made the mid-range consistently, and hit both catch and shoot threes. Most importantly though, he wasn’t just driving with his head down, he was actually making plays. I was amazed at the end of the game that he only had 4 assists.

At defense he was solid, but I was very impressed by his ability to draw the offensive foul. He must have drawn 3-4 by himself at least, and thats basically the same as a steal.

Portland could coast along with their superior talent and stay right with us. Now that Portland woke up, the hammer cometh down.

by Batumshakalaka on Dec 19, 2009 5:27 AM PST up reply actions

Bayless has hit .435 of his jumpers for the season

That isn’t phenomenal, but it is solid. If you took out his 3 pt attempts his percentage on midrange jumpers has been even better. Go look at the game splits over at ESPN. He has been consistently efficient all season, and particularly so in the last 7-8 games.

by upper left corner on Dec 19, 2009 9:28 AM PST up reply actions

The rotation looks dece.

Keep starting Miller, he can get the traditional line-up flowing. Let Blake back him up, let Bayless back up Roy and when the time is right put in the attack line-up of Roy, Rex, Martell, Blake (Rudy when he returns) and Pryz/Aldridge. 2 scorers 2 shooters and a big. Loving the attack line-up, Go Blazers!

by hellablazed on Dec 18, 2009 1:28 PM PST reply actions

At some point you have to ask why not start your best line-up

If Bayless continues to play well over the next month, why not start him. Let Miller be the playmaking penetrator on the second unit matched with shooters like Rudy. Blake is an expiring contract and the team should trade him after Rudy comes back if they are not going to resign him next summer.

Bayless needs a lot of time on the floor to gain experience and maturity. Given that this season is a bit of a lost cause, why not after the break if he continues to play well.

by upper left corner on Dec 18, 2009 1:46 PM PST up reply actions

I dunno Bayless reminds me a lot of the Jet.

I think it would be tougher to establish LMA and Roy early in the game with Bayless starting. For now I think we stick with him as an off the bench, change of pace guy… at least for now.

by Escrote on Dec 18, 2009 2:07 PM PST up reply actions

Don't disagree

My comment is more about what to do when Rudy comes back if Bayless has continued to shine.

If we are not going to resign Blake next summer, why not trade his expiring contract at the deadline. We are not going to contend this year anyway. The marginal utility of Blake is rapidly falling. Eventually, Miller would be a much better fit with the second unit than Blake.

by upper left corner on Dec 18, 2009 2:51 PM PST up reply actions

I agree

At least this year I think we should keep starting Miller. Play him the first and third for easy buckets and stability, and Bayless the second for change of pace intensity, and the fourth to play with Roy as he takes over

Portland could coast along with their superior talent and stay right with us. Now that Portland woke up, the hammer cometh down.

by Batumshakalaka on Dec 19, 2009 5:29 AM PST up reply actions

Let's not get ahead of ourselves

I really like Bayless, but he just had a couple good performances against defenses with no inside presence. At home.

Yeah, his energy is great, athleticism is great, I hope he helps transform our team into the attacking group it could be (I can dream anyhow). But let’s wait & see how he does on a nightly basis against teams who actually defend the paint before anointing him…

by dulcamara on Dec 18, 2009 1:32 PM PST reply actions

that would be no fun

and after all we have been saying for a year an a half to let him play and then when he plays he wins the game for us, is fun to watch and pretty much does everyting we could possibly ask for. Lets let him play and enjoy the highlights

by The Thinker on Dec 18, 2009 3:50 PM PST up reply actions

Where do we go from here?

Orlando

Miami

Dallas

San Antonio

Home vs. Denver

Let’s see how he does in longer minutes against teams that A) have perimeter defenders and B) have shot blockers lurking in the paint. I think he’ll do fine, even if he doesn’t run wild like last night. He’ll probably have a couple games that aren’t so good at all this month, and several good ones.

Going forward, even if he struggles at times, he’ll now probably always get enough PT to find out if he’s having one of those nights.

True, he's still going to have "rookie" games for a while

But I think he’s gonna get inside regardless who is guarding him, and he is by far the best guy we have to charge at the Dwight Howards of the league for fouls problems.

the joy is back

That’s really all I care about at this point—the joy in watching this team hustle and feed off each other was just pouring out of the Garden after the game last night. It wasn’t just the win—there weren’t whoops of joy after beating Jersey—but there’s a sense of hope and excitement around things, a reason to look forward and not dwell on the past or sulk in self-pity.

I would disagree somewhat with the diarist and agree with Dave—what was different last night was that Bayless showed he could handle the greater responsibilities of his position besides just scoring. His positioning, floor awareness and defensive hustle are the equivalent in football of an RB knowing how to block a blitz, or a baseball player knowing how to hit to the right side and advance the runner with an out, and run hard all the way to first despite the fact that the out is surely going to be you when you get there. Phenoms don’t really earn the trust of their coach until they can do those unheralded things that are nonetheless very important. That’s the test that JayBay passed last night, and that’s why there’s joy in Stumptown again. IMO.

I specifically mention, in all caps nonetheless, that his defense is what really sets him apart and was the key to hos success last night…..i love all these people disagreeing with me on things I never wrote or even suggested or implied

I apologize, but step back

It was an error for me to say “diarist,” when I meant "commenter. I was referring back to what upper left corner said, above, that it wasn’t anything we hadn’t already seen a lot of before from him.

It was a mistake, I’m sorry. But unclench your jaw from around my neck! :)

I disagree with you on point 3

If B-Rex was that highly-rated around the league, he would have been drafted where he was predicted. As it was, he fell to Indiana, who drafted him not to keep, but to trade.

That said, I think he is a good fit with Roy, who can do a lot of the traditional point guard things which Bayless is still developing. I would like to see him kept and developed, and hopefully get some burn

well, then again

GM’s aren’t always good prognosticators. I mean, Joe Alexander went before Bayless and Brook Lopez.

not true at all

everyone knew Rose-Beasley were going 1-2…and he was strongly considered at #4 by OKC, everything i read was that it was essentially a tossup between he and Westbrook, and they went with Westbrook for defense since they already had Durant.

Mayo and Love were essentially picked for the other’s team (they were traded for each other on draft day), the Knicks had a love-affair with Gallinari and were taking him there no matter what, LAC already had a PG, ditto for the Nets who had Devin Harris and took Lopez.

The Bobcats didn’t expect him to fall that far, and were totally shocked when he was available. They hadn’t scouted him very much and went with DJ Augustin because they had done more checking on him and were more comfortable. The Blazers had been targeting Augustin, expecting him to be available in their draft range, and were equally surprised by Charlotte’s move to take Augustin. When they saw him drop to #11 with Indiana, they made the call and made the trade, taking Rush for them at our spot. Indiana had Tinsley, and had just added Jarrett Jack and TJ Ford and didn’t need a PG..it’s not like they just dropped him

The other thing was that many scouts didn’t consider him a “pure PG”, and more of a tweener, which says nothing to his abilities but probably did effect decisions by drafting teams.

In short, his draft position was not indicative at all of his value around the league, as that was a very need-based draft. Chad Ford and those guys get their info from NBA front offices and such, and he had him ranked top 5 all the way until draft day – in the same tier as OJ Mayo (Westbrook was actually in tier 3), so his value around the league definitely was much higher than his draft position.
