12-18-09 Junk RRRROOOOOWWWRRRRR

I have never been on the Bayless bandwagon. Not after his stellar summer league debut, not ever. Just because a guy RRROOOOOOOWWWWWRRRRRRRR’s after every play doesn’t make me a fan. To know full well I can pass the ball better than he can doesn’t help either.

Star-divide

But I’m also not averse to letting my feminine side come out and change my mind.

My problem with Bayless is I don’t think he’ll ever make a great passer. Although  I do believe he can become good at dishing the ball.

But then, maybe he doesn’t have to be a great passer to fit well into the Blazer system. Maybe the things a "Steve Nash" does can be compensated for with a guy who is tenacious about getting to the hoop. When Oden comes back, a gritty unrelenting force driving through the paint that can’t be deterred may be the perfect blend with the big guy down low. If he gets doubled up on the drive, there’s Greg’s big soft hands just waiting, and to be sure in a situation like that, Greg will be getting it very close to the basket – excuse me for drooling.

Well not only that, his reputation will certainly spread "STOP this guy from getting to the hole." And there’s where you don’t have to be a Steve Nash, teams will have at least 3 players they will have to collapse on, Oden, Roy, Bayless. With a triple threat in the paint Martell, Rudy, Blake, et al will have time to fire up some BBQ, read War and Peace, wax a little, whatever, before they take that 3-pointer. And that’s just the beginning of havoc wrecking scenarios that open up when you have one more guy on the floor that can take it to the hole.

Hmmmm, I just might change my mind about Bayless after all – go ahead, twist my arm.

I haven't been on the Bayless bandwagon either.

After last night, I at least have my hand on the grip bar to pull myself up on the step.

I only hope he continues to have performances like last night: efficient, not a lot of turnovers, aggressive (not just driving but taking the shots when they’re there).

by DrivetheLane on Dec 18, 2009 7:39 AM PST reply actions

He was so hesitant at even the no brainer passes last year I just thought he could never make it.

He seems to be doing far better this year, doesn’t look intimidated. And I really don’t think he has to be great at passing, but last year was pretty ugly in that department.

I like that he scored a point per minute.

That means by extrapolation, we can count on him for up to 48 points a game in regulation. I did the math it checks out

Whoa, your math is way off. He’s somewhere around 12 minutes a game with just under 7 points.

Tonight he played 29 minutes and scored 29 points. I’m sure nonlinear math should be used so without getting a calculator…80 points or so in 48 minutes.

Well ok, I’ll accept 48 points a game – IF I HAVE TOO.

I don't know what fits Toronto.

Given our injuries, I suppose he would replace Outlaw better than our current options from a scoring P.O.V. But I cannot imagine how/why we would ever have tried to run the ball through him in a way to fully maximize what he used to be good at doing.

I love how the coaching staff have put Bayless in a situation where he can succeed in.

Its nice to see him play to his strengths rather than having the burden of setting up the offense in which he has not been comfortable doing up til now. I’ve always been frustrated that the staff has tried to convert players into things they arent. That’s why its refreshing to see Bayless just do what he does best. His jump shot falling now is quite surprising. Congrats to all your hard work.

his jumper. It looked really nice last night. Same with his ball handling. It’s a real testament to his hard work. I still want to see that kind of show more consistently (not necessarily lots of points, but efficient scoring and not many turnovers) before I’m fully in the “Bayless will work” but last night was the first time I thought there was a legit shot him working on the Blazers could happen.

I liked it better when people thought Nate had an irrational love of Bayless for physical or racial reasons

I think Nate is just a risk adverse guy in general, and Bayless has been the risky option… especially for a team trying to win. Hard to develop a PG on the fly, AND win, if the guy isn’t Chris Paul or sumthin’… and we’re developing Oden and Friends as well.

Now is the perfect opportunity though, because we’ve been decimated by injuries, and we’re no longer a viable option to go deep in the playoffs— if we make it at all. It becomes less risky, so a dude like Nate is more open to it.

Things suck bad this year, but if we come out of it with a for-sure starting PG, huzzah.

As a charter member of team Bayless

All I can say is….duh..

only Roy rivals him for talent on this team..

He has the tools to be dominant in the league – - amazing that now the Blazers are forced to use him, taking the pressure off — and poof – - as soon as he can stop looking over his shoulder waiting to get pulled at the first sign of inexperience he shows, he relaxes and performs…

to those who thought the experience could be gained by sitting and watching – - or in practice – - it doesn’t work that way…it’s only getting out and swimming in it – - the flow and intensity of the competition, that allows the guys to grow into the players they become

why this team signed another point guard instead of an experienced backup PF is beyond me..

but the behavior around personnell issues inside this organization has always been perplexing to me

I’m very happy for Bayless right now.

I’m sure the coaches and players have seen this from Bayless probably everyday in practice. It does make you wonder why it took our team to get decimated before we got to see it. Not that I expected to see a lot of Bayless earlier this year, but there did seem to be some matchups and situations where I thought Bayless would get a chance.
That performance tonight should have earned him some minutes in everybody’s eyes.

The personnel decision-making can be strange.

However, I don’t think the Mills decision was bad… ASSUMING they are not bringing Blake back (which definitely is something that I will need to see to believe), they have to have a 3rd PG in the hopper.

The decision pissed me off at first, but since at least Dante has shown himself a capable backup 4, and since KP picked up Juwan, I think the glaring need has been rectified.

by tominhawaii on Dec 18, 2009 8:55 AM PST up reply actions

Food for thought

I sometimes think about what it would’ve been like living in the time of the dinosaurs. Scary? Sure. But I wonder what kinds of sounds these creatures made. Since there seems to be evidence that dinosaurs were similar in ways to modern birds, I like to imagine that each of these ancient species had characteristic songs that they would sing, just like modern song birds, but more in the tenor and bass range, and very much louder! How cool would that be!

From a Wikipedia article on the origin of birds (emphasis is mine):

Fossil evidence also demonstrates that birds and dinosaurs shared features such as hollow, pneumatized skeletons, gastroliths in the digestive system, and nest-building and brooding behaviors, with birds. The ground-breaking discovery of fossilized Tyrannosaurus rex soft tissue allowed a molecular comparison of cellular anatomy and protein sequencing of collagen tissue, both of which demonstrated that T. rex and birds are more closely related than either is to Alligator.

I'm not surprised he is a top ten pick

I always thought he was a huge steal. He has raw talent, real enough skill to put up huge numbers as a freshman at Arizona and he has a work ethic.

His game reminded me of the Hawks version of Jason Terry with more explosiveness and less jumpshot. I figured the jumpshot would start to fall.

Another thing if a player can collapse the defense like Bayless he doesn’t have to be a great passer just unselfish or heady enough to look. The fact that he was just now starting to grumble should let you know he isn’t unselfish and playing behind Rodriguez, Miller and Fernandez has taught him the value of keeping his head up.

I've been working some algorithms in my head, shifting variables here and there, and

I think, there is room to expand blake’s minutes; Last night, I think i realized, if we play andre miller at the four, we can then play blake at the 3, which is like an untapped raw set of new minutes for blake. We wouldn’t even have to start blake—we could let them tip the ball at the start of the game, call time out on our first possession, sub blake for miller, and then never sit him by rotating him through out the various number positions on our team.

they engineer it, must take forever. For example, high frequencies don’t travel far, so if they make the highs super loud, your ears think they are right next to you. If they hear more low than mid/high, they automatically assume the object is farther away.

well, i’d often wear wool socks to help absorb sweat, so sometimes. One of my favorite places to hike, requires you to cross through a stream about 4 times as you switch back up a mountain, so you end up pretty wet.

One of my favorite qutoes from last night, if true
It’s Brandon Roy (27 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists), who Bayless said had talked to him about developing into a Mo Williams-type secondary scoring threat.

Roy knows what he’s doing.

with that starting lineup

we’ll need shooters off the bench, e.g. Travis, Rudy.

I expect Roy, Bayless, and Batum to shoot a combined ~37% from 3 on average, maybe a little better if they are getting wide open looks and Oden outlet passes, but I figure 37% would be pretty good.

I think of Roy/Bayless/Batum and LMA in the corner 3 spot hover around 37%

Then it’s good enough… and I think one of ’em can become a 40%-er.

3’s at a good percentage are efficient, but I like how much that team would get to the line more.

In order to get Anthony Randolph, teams will have to take on Maggette as well
Golden State’s Anthony Randolph is indeed available via trade, as numerous reports suggested this week, but NBA front-office sources indicate that the Warriors are trying much harder to move Corey Maggette.

A sure way to snag Randolph, then, would be taking Maggette in the same deal. That’s clearly the Warriors’ hope.

The issue there, though, is that Maggette has three years left on his contract after this season at $30.8 million, courtesy of one of Chris Mullin’s last acts as Warriors GM. A team would have to really like Randolph and believe it can finally reach him to take on Maggette as well, especially in this economy.

Obviously no one is untouchable on a 7-18 team, but sources with knowledge of the Warriors’ thinking say that their willingness to move guards Monta Ellis, Stephen Curry and Anthony Morrow has been overstated. None of them are being “shopped,” sources said Friday, although it seems safe to suggest that the Warriors would eventually have to part with at least one of them to land the bruising power forward — such as Carlos Boozer or David West — they lack and covet.

but wouldn’t move any of the Big 3 (Greg, Brandon, LMA) and if Golden State wants a bruising PF in a deal, we don’t have that chip to begin with (LMA is essentialy what I think they hope Randolph could be next season)

Randolph is a much different player than LMA— he’s a significantly better rebounder and shot-blocker and can put the ball on the floor. He can’t shoot as well as LMA and doesn’t have LMA’s post game, but he’s an extremely interesting player. A potential star.

I might be open to a trade for some more efficient guys if you have any. With all the injuries I have to win the FG%, FT%, and TO categories every week, and hope I steal the Steals category and maybe Blocks or Rebounds

the strategy that has been gold for us is building around a few star guards and then having a host of big men that win FG% and rebounding. Having the guards gets you guardy categories, but you have more average big men, so we’re one of hte top rebounding teams in the league.

I think Miller sucks and he is getting more credit than what he deserves and he probably deserves criticism. I also think Bayless is irritating.

by tominhawaii on Dec 18, 2009 1:28 PM PST up reply actions

Miller is doing his best – obviously not the straw the broke the championship camel’s back, but it was not like the Blazers had a ton of other options.

Bayless – yes, he is a little irritating (er something, not sure the word for it). Give him time. Whenever a new, good, hyper kid joins the gang, there is always awkward moments as he is adjusting to the culture. It is clear he has always been deep inside his own head for a year and a half now, but he is getting better. I think next year, he might seem a little more Blazerish.

I get the paper, so I don't care!

by Name's Ash on Dec 18, 2009 1:34 PM PST up reply actions

irritating (er something, not sure the word for it).

I think what it is is that Bayless, by a looooong ways, has the most swagger on the team. He’s a bit cocky, maybe a little arrogant. I can see how that could rub some people the wrong way being as this current team, sans Bayless, has no other player like that.

by DrivetheLane on Dec 18, 2009 1:43 PM PST up reply actions

I would say Brandon has the most swagger, but Bayless has something similar to cockiness/arrogance. I am still not sure what the correct word/phrase would be.

I get the paper, so I don't care!

by Name's Ash on Dec 18, 2009 1:50 PM PST up reply actions

to me, Brandon doesn't emit that

“i’m awesome and I know it” attitude that Bayless does. When Bayless steps on the court, you can tell he means business. Even that he thinks he’s one of the best out there. Which is a great trait to have, in my opinion. To me, Bayless just appears more demonstrative about that than others on the team.

by DrivetheLane on Dec 18, 2009 1:51 PM PST up reply actions

I guess we have different definitions of swagger then. I think of it as more confidence, not cockiness. The Brandon is on the floor, it is assumed good things will naturally happen.

Are we maybe having different conversations?

I get the paper, so I don't care!

by Name's Ash on Dec 18, 2009 1:57 PM PST up reply actions

hahahahaha

no, these aren’t different conversations. to me, swagger is a noticeable attitude above and beyond confidence. I think the difference between Brandon and Bayless, perhaps, is that Brandon has a quieter swagger whereas Jerryd is more demonstrative/emotional. To me, there’s a difference between confidence and swagger. Brandon exudes confidence, but not in a showy way. Bayless does both. does that make sense? it seems rambling to me as i write it. haha

by DrivetheLane on Dec 18, 2009 2:00 PM PST up reply actions

Makes perfect sense

Who would you rather have as your leader? For me, it would be a guy like Brandon. I prefer quiet confidence. Others might like the demonstrative/emotional type, but that tends to wear out over time.

I guess it does not even have to be leader. Who would you rather have as your team mate. The steady very good performer with even keel perspective, or the very good performer with off the charts emotion.

I think the emotional guy would have a shorter half life than the even keel guy.

I get the paper, so I don't care!

by Name's Ash on Dec 18, 2009 2:04 PM PST up reply actions

i'm with you. i'd rather have the quiet, steady guy.

especially as a leader. but i love love love the fiery guys too. They can be very important to a team. Rudy has a little bit of it too, but he warms up to it as he performs well. Bayless comes out with the “i’m gonna stifle some folks and people are gonna know it” attitude. i love it.

but, to me, it’s more important to have that quiet leader who can reign the emotional guy in and calm stuff down when necessary.

by DrivetheLane on Dec 18, 2009 2:07 PM PST up reply actions

Rudy’s fire is different than Bayless’s hyper emotion. I would love to be Rudy’s teammate for ever, but I think Bayless would have to take it down a notch for me to want to hang out with him long term.

But Bayless knows everyone who has ever lived or been to PHX. He is UNIVERSAL (in Pheonix).

#52

by Mortimer on Dec 18, 2009 2:37 PM PST up reply actions

Why?

His career resume says he starts slow and the Blazers were already replacing two starting from a team that won 54 games. He, according to Nate, was told he would run the second unit. I also remember Mike B. saying when Miller met him in Vegas that he said he could help Rudy, who is not a starter.

I’m not saying it was the right decision, just that I can see why it was done. I don’t think Miller has done anything to warrant a start over Blake. Blake’s poor play is the only reason, not because Miller won the job, which is another of Nate’s principles.

When I read comments here, I’d swear Blake is the only guy on the team playing bad.

by tominhawaii on Dec 18, 2009 1:46 PM PST up reply actions

In m view, Miller has consistently outplayed Blake.

Blake currently has the lowest PER on the team and has played the 3rd most minutes. PER, admittedly, is a far from perfect stat. However, that’s a pretty good start as to why people think Blake should play less.

#52

by jksnake99 on Dec 18, 2009 1:48 PM PST up reply actions

Personally I'd like to see Miller start with Roy, Bayless as backup, Blake for spot minutes

And let the person playing the best get the crunch time minutes (if any).

Miller tends to improve as the season continues, Bayless would get plenty of playing time (and he’s hitting three’s now!), and Blake’s trade value either won’t change or might improve.

by Timmay! on Dec 18, 2009 1:53 PM PST up reply actions

this is what i think they should do too.

it makes too much sense right now. The only caveat may be waiting to see if Bayless’ three point shot will fall at a decent enough clip (meaning at least as well as Blake’s, which shouldn’t be tough right now) to warrant the full time backup role.

by DrivetheLane on Dec 18, 2009 1:56 PM PST up reply actions

now that Bayless has broke out maybe.

at this point, i still expect Bayless to get relegated to spot minutes upon Rudy’s return. I hope that doesn’t happen, at least if Bayless continues to play like he did last night.

by DrivetheLane on Dec 18, 2009 2:01 PM PST up reply actions

Yep, though I'd like to see Bayless get some minutes per game, even when struggling

If he’s stinking up the court, then he’ll only get 5 minutes and Blake gets an expanded role that game. But if Blake plays 30 minutes with 5/1/0 or something, there’s bound to be questions of whether Blake brought much to the game.

You could argue he does bring more (stability, experience, knowledge of the offense, veteran craftiness on defense), but it’ll definitely be a strong debate against long term growth of a young energetic PG during a season where it makes sense to at least grow him a bit.

If Bayless is relegated to 10 or less minutes at the end of the year, regardless of his performance on the court, I think he’ll quietly request a trade. He’s a year away from negotiating his post-rookie contract, and he won’t want to take a chance on another year on the bench and get a Channing Frye contract.

Not that Phoenix would be a bad location for Bayless either.

by Timmay! on Dec 18, 2009 2:07 PM PST up reply actions

i think the best way for Bayless to continue to see court time is simple.

it is: don’t turn the ball over.

personally, I think this is Nate’s reason for not playing Bayless more often. Which is dumb. But i’ve not seen evidence yet to believe that Nate will change his methods upon the injured guy’s coming back.

and, yes, Jake, if Bayless continues to perform like last night and Blake continues to suck and rotations don’t change after injured guys come back, Nate should probably be let go.

by DrivetheLane on Dec 18, 2009 2:11 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

Even if Bayless doesn't keep performing like last night.

Bayless is still a young player and is going to struggle at times. However, his play over this whole season (not just last night) dictates that he’s probably worth developing. Blake really shouldn’t be playing at all when Rudy gets back (unless Miller is traded). If he’s in the rotation and Bayless isn’t…

I don’t even want to think about it.

by southern oregon on Dec 18, 2009 2:17 PM PST up reply actions

Well, last season, even a Bayless supporter like me has to say Bayless wasn't good

That poor play, at least the memory of it, simply will carry over to the next year, and adding a PG like Miller just made it harder for Bayless to snag minutes as a PG.

I think from here on out, we won’t see Bayless getting docked minutes. Even if I don’t agree with it, I could see Nate still playing Blake (because of his 3 point shot) over Miller, and still playing Bayless as well. More 3 guard shenanigans.

I don’t see Bayless getting the shaft right now. If his play suddenly dips for an extended period, maybe, but I figure Miller will get the shaft… since he’s gotten it this whole time more than anyone.

by Timmay! on Dec 18, 2009 2:33 PM PST up reply actions

Brandon has gone through 3 or 4 cycles of battling the scouting adjustments

I remember in, I think early season 2, Brandon was struggling after teams made more adjustments. Folks were doing the "Oh, Brandon has peaked, teams have figured him out), then he averaged some insane number of points with great efficiency within weeks.

It’ll be interesting to see how Bayless does long-term adjustments to scouting. He really struggled with it last season.

by Timmay! on Dec 18, 2009 2:43 PM PST up reply actions

I just thought of something

I watch the games looking for Miller to make a mistake. I don’t know if you do that with Blake, but I’m sure others do that watching Blake, because that means he’s probably playing instead of a player they want to watch like Miller or Bayless.

I’m 100% serious here, I think Miller is good for a couple of alley oops and that is is. When I watch him play, his defense is no better than Blakes, he takes and misses bad shots, and he doesn’t seem, to me, as committed as the rest of the team.

I think if someone asked you to name the top 5-10 plays you remember from each player, I bet I could remember more bad plays by Miller and Bayless than anyone else on BE and just about everyone else could name more bad Blake plays than me. I even got pissed at Andre when he got hit in the eye.

In conclusion, I think although we are watching the same game, we are actually watching two different things. It’s like the movie Airplane. Someone could watch the main characters and someone could watch the background and they both would remember the movie differently.

I do think Miller plays not up to what he can, for whatever reason (motivation, coach, not in full shape, …). I also do think Miller is better at running a team than Blake (and Bayless for a long time), and it’s not close. You don’t get more assists than Drexler and Pippen by being a dud.

by Norsktroll on Dec 18, 2009 5:23 PM PST up reply actions

Miller if nothing else must find it hard to learn who does what..

he started running sets with batuum & travis …and greg & Rudy….all thats new..and now has shifted again..

to run a team well you have to know where everyone is going to be “next” what there favorite areas are and how quickly the move from place to place…

no one has a clear-enough defined role on the floor that stays consistent – from the onset it would have been difficult with Martell returning and Miller showing up – - but with all the injury shuffling, the difficulty level has increased in terms of developing a comfort zone…

then the dynamics of who should be playin when has added tension – - you get a performance anxiety effect if you feel you are being overly scrutinized or criticized..

tricky times – - wish I had gotten to watch Jerryd go off for the 29 :-)

It's not an act

Some people have commented like me pert near every game this season except the last two.

by tominhawaii on Dec 18, 2009 1:26 PM PST up reply actions

My problem with all of this

Is that Bayless has had two good games and they were both wins. That is it. A large majority has been angry and negative after almost every game this year regardless of the outcome. They get their wish to start Miller and for Bayless to play more and all of a sudden everything is perfect except for Blake.

Not to mention how many times I’ve read the term “sample size”, and now some folks after two are (exaggeration) practically ready to trade Roy and build the team around Bayless.

I'm personally ok with folks who are still concerned about Bayless, as well as folks who are ecstatic about him

But the over-the-top praise is a little early (how about a few weeks of consistency first? I may only be two weeks away!), and the attitude of “I KNEW IT! See haters, I told you he was great!” is unnecessary and doesn’t really help anything. We’re all Blazer fans here, we all want the Blazers to succeed. Turning on each other does nothing.

I’m not intending to point this at anyone btw, there was no one comment that inspired the rant, just felt that way after reading the recap threads etc. This isn’t aimed at you two in particular. (Though I do think it’s early to start calling Bayless one of the Big Three, that’s at least a topic that can be reasonably discussed)

by Timmay! on Dec 18, 2009 1:48 PM PST up reply actions

I lost a reply

I’m not even sure if I was replying to this comment. I’m happy a KP draft pick/trade is doing well and the Blazers are winning. I just wish Bayless was more Tim Duncan and less Birdman.

by tominhawaii on Dec 18, 2009 2:18 PM PST up reply actions

It's not about Bayless and Blake

The defense is still crappy, Miller is still playing crappy, other players have improved, yet it still seems to be about Bayless=good and Blake=bad. Thank goodness some of the Nate hate went away.

Well, it definitely isn't different than child abuse.

But, personally, I consider it different to talk about a serious topic like abuse (of any kind) as opposed to an entirely different kind of serious topic like poverty. Just because of the extreme emotions and personal history involved… you have a greater possibility of coming off as insensitive to an issue that can hurt people when the topic is more hurtful.

Although, again, I’m not really qualified to argue a point that I was just expanding the logic on but I don’t necessarily agree with.

the problem is that with the amount of readers the site gets, any serious topic that is brought up is going to have people with personal experience and emotions involved… should we refrain from talking about anything? Poverty for example… what if someone grew up homeless… look at the emotions involved in the MLU topic.. shoot, look at how bent out of shape people get about Blake vs. Bayless… My point is this: We can’t avoid every topic because someone out there might have negative personal history and emotions attached to it. Sure, I don’t want to judge what someone thinks is important enough to be bent out of shape about. I think anything goes for player talk as long as people are not overly hostile about name calling (credit: ATF). And people can be sensitive to various topics. Calling poor people all lazy might hurt people who have struggled so hard to barely survive is cruel and insensitive. Would sarcastically mentioning poverty in any effect have the same impact as bringing up abuse? I don’t know again.

I can't help but agree with this.

I think it’s nice to be in solidarity with those who may feel pain due to another’s ignorance or meanness, so I might stand up and not entirely ignore someone just to make sure those people were not feeling alone. I would just hate to make the assumption that anyone would assume that ignoring them is being used as a solution as opposed to merely looking the other way.

Clearly, there are going to be situations with repeat offenders within a community like this where everyone is going to get the need for mutual ignoring with the intention of reprimand. But it is just important to note that we don’t just discuss issues like this with the parties involved for their sake but make it a community discussion because of the impact it could have on those not saying anything but just following along.

Worse commercial?

The “I can only show you I care by giving you jewelry” commercials?

The “Look, I got you a luxury car with a bow on it!” commercials?

Or the “I shop at store x and bought product y, and it fixed all the problems in our family, and our life is absolutely perfect!” (Walmart is notorious for it this season)

I think Tone told Bayless about my fist pump comment because Bayless did it a lot in last nights game, just to get my goat. I’m pretty sure being a Bayless homer doesn’t help anything but haters probably motivate Bayless. By that logic, I’m the only Blazers fan that cares about the team.

TV’s the bogeyman, IMO. It’s a symptom of other problems.

For example, like I said to someone here a while back, people were always superficial. It’s just easier to see when youtube exists. In reality, youtube exposure is just the symptom.

They would be surprised about how much people respect good old fashioned classic news get in some countries

I know two “shows” in Germany that US executives laugh about how old and dodgy it looks and is presented – until they see the ratings for both the prime time news (8 pm) and the late night edition (10:30). There is a slightly hipper version using a studio with 3D animations and such on another channel at 7 and 9:45 that deliberately goes out of the way of the old classic, and is still very classic by US standards. All other much hipper news presentations don’t stand a chance, and nobody tries to put on another serious newscast at 8 pm.
