this game shows what has been missing for bayless to be successful: Confidence.

Not self confidence. Not like Martell.
Not from the crowd/media. Not like Oden.
He just needed the confidence of his coach and Roy and lo and behold impossible is nothing.

He couldn't shoot last year

"I could almost fall asleep when he's got the ball," Demopoulos said of Roy. "That's how comfortable I feel with him. He always comes through."

by lee3022 on Dec 17, 2009 10:46 PM PST up reply actions

He's been there the whole time,

just waiting to grow up a little;

Maybe its confidence, his or coach per nima,

and,

finding a good stroke and consistent shot from range;
playing D with court awareness enough to switch and take charges;
showing that he can make smart and accurate passes;
and using his leaping advantage for rebounding.

In other words, lots of serious and hard work.

Great night for Bayless.

Over last 4 minutes, yeah...

He got picked off screens too much, though. I know that for the first 3 quarter, we were switching by design. (why?) But we played them straight in the 4th and Blake still got picked off too many times.

Still, he did hit some 3’s out there.

Which has been: Just a pure shooter and nothing more… who doesnt shoot all that great. He has really developed in so many areas of his game, especially rebounding. He’s still a pretty decent shooter, and I think with consistent time he can develop into a good, solid player. Not to forget, he’s only 22.

Nash is such a heady player

I think it is likely too risky with him.

An extremely aware player, who is an awesome shooter… it could very well work to foul him right off, but I just don’t trust it with Nash.

#52

by Mortimer on Dec 17, 2009 10:49 PM PST up reply actions

I hear ya. I would foul him if he catches it with his back to the hoop, otherwise maybe not.

Maybe Nate feels like its too fine a line, which I guess I would understand. The Blazers got a good contest on the shot, so its hard to be too upset.

#52

by jksnake99 on Dec 17, 2009 10:53 PM PST up reply actions

It's equal parts, me no trust Nash to NOT be smart there

And me no trust whoever we got doing the fouling to do it 100% correctly.

VERY fine line, tonight giving a strong challenge was the right call, and I think it usually is.

I still laugh

at posters here who insisted that they’d never want Nash here because he doesn’t fit or play defense or something. He’s one of the few guys in the league that still terrifies me even taking an off-balance horrible three to tie it.

ESPECIALLY after Frye caught the ball, held it on his hip and telegraphed that he was going to hand it off to Nash. Very very little risk in fouling when he did that. no way he could turn that into a shot attempt

You guys are right, it makes sense

Just hard to trust us to make the read correctly, and to know that Frye was going to be in that position with his back to the basket.

You gotta either decide to trust our players to make the correct read and foul nicely (I don’t), or play it straight up and tough.

i can't fault them for playing it straight

the bigger sin was on the previous Suns possession (up for with 8 seconds left) and is something we always do late – let the other team (in this case Nash), walk right in for not only an uncontested layup, but one which only took four seconds to occur. Why do we do this over and over again?

Simple...he came in at the 8 minute mark in both 1st and 3rd quarter...

which I hate..trust Marty for a bit, Nate.

Then he played all of the 4th.

Just because Blake is out of the starting lineup, it doesn’t mean Nate won’t give him a ton of minutes. Nate is nothing if not predictable.

by CleBlazer on Dec 17, 2009 10:37 PM PST reply actions

I might start calling Bayless "mini-Wallace"

He rebounds on defense, scores inside, draws fouls, hits big-time shots, and at least tries to play perimeter defense.

My favorite scene of the night might have been him hitting that corner 3 and then hugging Roy, and how he tried to box out Amare quite ably on an outside shot (that went in, so it didn’t result in anything).

Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?

They can get out and run when it’s all loosy goosy in the early quarters, but when it gets tight and everything is pressurized in the late fourth, let’s just say Jared Dudley and Channing Frye aren’t quite as confident stepping into the wing treys. Also, teams can crank up the defense a little and shut ’em down. Orlando almost stole their game last week after being down HUGE in the first half.

Honestly

If Oden’s there, he doesn’t have the space to drive.
Oden is going to be a weak side rebounder and dunker when his man leaves to challenge Roy and Bayless. At least for the next few seasons.

by TheThinWhiteDuke on Dec 17, 2009 11:05 PM PST up reply actions

I don't agree with the space to drive thang

If anything, having Joel in there makes it tougher because his man doesn’t have to guard him and is almost always free to double the driver when they come down the lane.

by Mortimer on Dec 17, 2009 11:07 PM PST up reply actions

Agreed, never understood this either

Even if Joel is sets up a few feet farther away, it’s not like he’s pulling his man out of the middle
.

#52

by Royster on Dec 17, 2009 11:10 PM PST up reply actions

That's exactly it

Joel is always on the weak side. Oden is always posting up strong side, where his man can stop the drive. It’s tough for Joel’s man to get across the lane to the driver.

by TheThinWhiteDuke on Dec 17, 2009 11:10 PM PST up reply actions

I don't really drink :-(

But seriously, Oden isn’t camped on the strong side every play, it’s as much LMA as him, and Joel and LMA are not totally out of the play on either side.

I think the Oden-clogs-the-lane was an excuse because Roy wasn’t getting good separation from his defender most of this season. And, was rusty.

We'll find out soon enough

how the Blazers do against the elite on the road.

They’ve still got talent like a typical club, but they have four quality NBA players sitting and how well we do is going to depend on their return quality and meshing with the team again. That’s a lot of stuff to happen late season and be tuned up for the playoffs.

That said, I’m not caring much about position in standings since I think it would be great to face LA in the first round and give them hell.
And, the injuries give other players a chance to develop and be available for big games.

May not go over big, but if Nate has helped prepare Bayless to be able to do what he did tonight, I don’t have a problem with his program. Nice selection, player development, and utilization.

I don't see it.

We’re not getting a top 4 seed. The only chance would be to finish 5th and draw 4th seeded Phoenix. No way we knock off LAL, Den, DAL, who are a near lock to be the top 3.

by jigglyai on Dec 17, 2009 11:56 PM PST up reply actions

Well, it's all about degrees

we’re going to pull out some wins like this throughout the year (although as Charles noted, the Suns are like 2-6 against div leaders), but in terms of being able to go into games against top teams and expect to win or have a good shot at winning, inuries have somewhat killed that dream.

It’s really not that different from your rockets. With a healthy Yao, you could be thinking about a potential title. Now, you guys are a team that’s a tough out and will beat some good teams, but isn’t a realistic threat to win more than a playoff series, no offense.

#52

by Royster on Dec 17, 2009 10:52 PM PST up reply actions

None taken.

Yao is the key to the current team. I don’t see this squad as a title contender, unless we somehow get a return to TMac of 04-05.

But by making noise I guess I mean, say making it to the WCF. I think getting hurt guys back, Portland can do that.

by Xiane on Dec 17, 2009 11:08 PM PST up reply actions

I really don't see a way that we could

win a playoff series against a healthy nuggets, Lakers or Mavs team as a lower seed right now. If we can sneak into that 5th seed, I could see us doing something like Atlanta and making the 2nd round, but I think that’s our ceiling, which is a big let down from a potential finals team (a little wishful thinking, admittedly).

#52

by Royster on Dec 17, 2009 11:25 PM PST up reply actions

we'd have everyone but Greg

and basically Greg was nothing more than 6 fouls in last year’s playoffs, so I think we’d be better than last year. The trick will be making it to the playoffs at all. I’m rooting for a San Antonio matchup

If Roy returns to something close to how he played last season

by Mortimer on Dec 17, 2009 11:30 PM PST up reply actions

I just wouldn't count on it or hope for it

Making it to the playoffs with the team so depleted, and Roy being so off, would be a big achievement for this roster.

Anything further, we need Oden and Roy playing well.

#52

by Mortimer on Dec 17, 2009 11:33 PM PST up reply actions

Right, but our injuries have basically taken us out of

firm members of that top tier of WC contenders and thrown us in with the rest of the riff raff like Phoenix, Houston, NO, Utah, etc. I’d put us at even money against of those teams in a playoff series, but huge dogs against any of the three I originally mentioned.

Don’t forget we still needed to come back from 13 down in the 4th at home to beat Phoenix.

by Corwin71 on Dec 17, 2009 10:50 PM PST up reply actions

If we trade Miller, ....

I care more about getting expiring contracts rather than usable players…

Why? If Joel opts, that means we have enough room for a max contract as long as salary cap stays around the same next year.

52 + 88 = 140% better team.

by xedubx on Dec 17, 2009 10:57 PM PST up reply actions

...I don't think so.

Now that we’ve signed Roy and LMA to their deals, I think we’re over the cap for a long time. If anything, we should be trading OUR expirings to retain our ability to have a higher payroll.

by Free Bayless on Dec 17, 2009 11:00 PM PST up reply actions

Well, considering that I actually did the math...

If the cap stays at $57.7 million, if we trade Andre for expiring contracts and Joel opts out, our total committed salary can be as low as $41,323,259.00. Max contract will be $16,224,600 but our cap space is $16,376,741.00.

52 + 88 = 140% better team.

by xedubx on Dec 17, 2009 11:07 PM PST up reply actions

whose contracts are not guaranteed next year.

by xedubx on Dec 17, 2009 11:07 PM PST up reply actions

You're right, technically.

Unfortunately, with all the players you’d have to dump, you’d be left with an 8-man roster, including your new max contract guy.

by Free Bayless on Dec 17, 2009 11:13 PM PST up reply actions

Yes, but I'd rather try to add a LeBron or Wade to this roster

Than go 12 deep.

Also, we can use our MLE next year. We can fill the rest using MLE and veteran’s minimum, which is allowed even if you are over the cap.

52 + 88 = 140% better team.

by xedubx on Dec 17, 2009 11:16 PM PST up reply actions

So...

PG – Bayless
SG – Roy, Rudy
SF – LeBron, Martell
PF – LaMarcus, Dante
C – Greg

And the rest MLE and vet minimum guys? I really like the starting lineup, obviously, but I don’t see it as plausible at all, especially since Nate thought we needed an extra guy when we got down to 9.

by Free Bayless on Dec 17, 2009 11:19 PM PST up reply actions

You forgot Nic

That’s 9 deep, which is plenty good for NBA.

I’d go throw a 4 year deal at Joel starting at the MLE. If not, try to sign Collison and fill the rest with Vet. Min. guys and rookies.

52 + 88 = 140% better team.

by xedubx on Dec 17, 2009 11:23 PM PST up reply actions

I'm all for it.

I just don’t see these things happening:

a) find someone to take Miller for expiring deals
b) have Joel reject the 7.5M option, but re-up for 5.5M per year
c) convince LeBron or Wade to come live in Portland
d) convince the coach that he’s ok going with Bayless and a scrub at the point

by Free Bayless on Dec 17, 2009 11:26 PM PST up reply actions

I admit, it's not a foolproof plan, but not improbable

a) it’d pretty much have to be a straight salary dump
b) My guess is that Joel will opt out anyway, due to likelihood of lockout in 2011 and this is likely Joel’s last big payday. it’s most likely Joel is gone.
c) While Lebron or Wade would be fantastic, practically any max guy in 2010 like Joe Johnson would still drastically improve this team. While only their own team can give the extra year, the current trend is for the max contract guys to sign for less years to pressure the organization into keeping the team good. Let’s say if you are LeBron…would you like your teammates to be over the hill Shaq and Mo Williams, or Roy, Aldridge, and Oden, given same yearly pay?
d) I am sure Nate is more than happy to run Blake at point for rest of the year

52 + 88 = 140% better team.

by xedubx on Dec 17, 2009 11:33 PM PST up reply actions

?

that is technically true, but we definitely won’t be under the cap if we signed a max contract guy in 2010. Plus, if we’re under the cap, we wouldn’t need to use the MLE anyway….so, I’m not really sure what you are arguing.

52 + 88 = 140% better team.

by xedubx on Dec 17, 2009 11:26 PM PST up reply actions

Hmm..my understanding of the rules is that

1. you can’t use the MLE more than once per every two years
2. You have to be over the cap

It does leave us bit thin at C, but Bayless – Roy -max free agent – Aldridge is probably good enough even if Oden goes down and we throw in an NBDL center.

All of his comments about Bayless’ playing time rubbed me the wrong way. He didn’t deserve more playing time until this month. He was a mistake machine. Now he’s putting it together and it’s a beautiful thing (and has given me hope for the season).

Martell with several huge plays down the stretch was nearly as big. Man, it would great if we could count on him for consistent production.

TNT and Barkley suck

After a great win by the Blazers in which they showed poise and hustle, including a stellar performance by Bayless, all Barkley could do was criticize the Blazers for not playing him more. Martell had a great game, Aldridge played big, Roy was good, Pryzbilla dominated, yet he said nothing positive about the blazers. Somebody said, the Suns let one slip, how about the Blazers beat the Suns? Then after the game the majority of the highlights were of the Suns. the Blazers had plenty of great plays. TNT: you suck.

by davebball on Dec 17, 2009 11:06 PM PST up reply actions

You are mistaken, sir

This is probably going to tick at least a few people off, but some times you just gotta sy that the Emperor is bare a$$ nekid.

Bayless had a PER of over 15 during Blake’s injury last year. Then when Blake came back, Bayless got inconsistent garbage time minutes and DNP-CDs for ten games. Then he was given the back-up minutes for three games and then sent back to garbage time. Nate never showed any real confidence in Bayless last year and Bayless was clearly pressing too hard in limited minutes trying to impress.

None of us will ever know if Bayless would have done better given consistent minutes last season. We do know that Nate did absolutely nothing to smooth his transition to the pros.

Bayless has been consistent all this season. Look back through the game splits, you can count the number of games where he didn’t score and score efficiently on one hand.

A lot of the hold out doubters made up their minds last season and have refused to open their eyes to his obviously improved play this fall. It is bad enough that these folks were wrong. It is inexcusable to try to rewrite history to try to justify their mistaken assessments.

Don't put words in my mouth. My point is not to say he is better than Manu in his prime...

My point is that you need to open your eyes and see what he has accomplished at this tender age with the very limited opportunities he has been given. He is improving rapidly. Who knows were he will end up?

My objection is that the same people who said he flat out sucked last year, now seem to be fighting a rear guard action to say that he will never be a PG or a starter. That is just plain stupid at this point in his career.

I cited his standing among his fellow NBA PGs to illustrate just how good and consistent he has been this season. People who compare him to mediocre back-up PGs should be spanked hard.

by upper left corner on Dec 18, 2009 12:55 AM PST up reply actions

Did I compare him to mediocre back-ups?

I meant that asserting Boykins et al as crappy comparisons makes sense and Manu didn’t. Saying that Manu’s better than him isn’t an insult anymore than saying Wade is better than Roy, or Dirk is better than LaMarcus.

I’ve never said I didn’t think Bayless had a chance to be good or that he’ll never be a starter, so those criticisms are off-base. Bayless did NOT play especially well last year, outside of about 3 games. That’s the facts, no revisionist history. I don’t know the reason why (pressing, rebuilt shot, who knows?), but does that really matter now? I’ve been pretty consistent here, as I said back in your post after the Wolves game:

If, over the course of the next couple weeks he continues to play well, I’ll adjust my stance accordingly, just like if we were still getting killed with Miller in the lineup in December I’d re-evaluate whether playing him more is the best option. It’s premature, in my eyes.

I don’t think I’ve ever stated that I think Jerryd couldn’t be good. There do happen to be more nuanced views out there than those that decided “BAYLESS: FUTURE ALL-NBA” or “BAYLESS, TINY BALL-HOG SG” after seeing him go through 4 layup lines during warmups of one game.

I hate it when people ridicule me as a Fanboy when in fact I have said repeatedly that I think the odds of Bayless becoming a starting quality PG were somewhere between 50-65% (I also said that he had an 85% chance of becoming a solid scorer). I apologize if I oversimplified your views.

At a minimum, I think we can agree that it is going to be very interesting to watch Bayless’ development and particularly fun to watch him play with Roy.

The hoopla over the performance from Bayless.

Not to take away from anything he did, but he did this against the Kings and Suns. Two teams with poor perimeter defense and no shot blocking. I’m glad to see him finally be used the way he was supposed to be used. Bayless is a scorer, that’s what he should be asked to do. A player like him is a sparkplug off the bench.

The coaching staff tried to turn him into Steve Blake. Now Bedge needs to figure out how to make the coaches use Oden properly and reduce Blake’s role on the team. We got to keep the pressure on the coaching staff.

The fact that you don't find his dribble asthetically pleasing means nothing

The fact that he can dribble through traffic and get to the hoop and he can be out on the break in the open floor, and he still has the lowest TOV% of our five guards means a heck of a lot more.

Seriously, a lot of your complaints and observations come across as a rear guard action on behalf of the doubters. Of all that Bayless has achieved so far this season, by far the most impressive has been his consistent efficiency. Go check out the game splits. You can count the number of times he has not scored and scored efficiently on one hand.

He is a scoring PG a la Tony Parker. He is already nearly equal to Blake in Assist %. He is going to need a season or two to practice his decision making and distribution skills, but don’t bet against a kid with his physical skills, work ethic, and will to win.

by upper left corner on Dec 18, 2009 12:48 AM PST up reply actions

Sorry ulc, we disagree on this and it has nothing to do with asthetics

Bayless does not handle ball pressure well when he is pressed up the court. I’ve seen it many times in regular season games as well as the summer league. I don’t speak on behalf of any rear guard action, I speak with my own observations. So please don’t marginalize my opinion as if I’m doing it with an agenda.

I said nothing ill of Bayless’ efficiency this year as a scorer. In fact, I’ve been a proponent of Bayless to be used as a scorer.

Unlike last season, he has proven he is definitely an NBA talent.

I haven’t noticed him having as many problems dribbling under pressure, and I think I remember him handling the press well, but it obviously hasn’t been enough to know for sure.

I think he’s done it better than Blake has, with his speed.

While I have been goofy with my love of Bayless tonight, I’m glad he is simply playing as well as he was in limited minutes… but he’s got a lot more to show every night. I hope we stick with him through the mistakes he will undoubtedly make as well.

Bayless hasn't been the guy bringing up the ball while being ball pressed.

When I watch the Blazers, I watch for specific things on the court. One of the biggest questions for Bayless is to be that guy who can take the pressure off Roy and handle the point guard duties. Part of that duty is dribbling against pressure and setting up the offense. Those aren’t his roles right now because he is usually on the court with Blake/Roy/Miller. The times he is bringing up the ball is when there is no pressure on him.

by blzrfan on Dec 18, 2009 1:05 AM PST up reply actions

They got him a dribbling coach this offseason

I think he has and will continue to improve in that regard. There is no doubt that he can handle the ball with both hands (unlike say Martell and Travis), dribble between his legs, has a quick first step (unlike Rudy), can change directions instantly, etc.

Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?

But I feel like he has just generally been more comfortable with his dribble in every scenario… but, like with everything, more needs to be seen.

I will definitely watch it more closely now.

by Mortimer on Dec 18, 2009 1:18 AM PST up reply actions

I'll start focusing on his reaction to pressure,

and see if he does pick it up too soon,
but I’m thinking that he generally has good control of that ball
and he’s the one to dribble past the pressure to bring the ball up;
are you talking in the half court?
When he’s got free rein to drive he’s not giving up that dribble easy.
So I’m not recalling the problem and other folks say the numbers prefer him.

As to all the hating on Miller/Blake/Bayless [choose one, or more], Blazers will need them all this year.
They know it, Nate knows, KP knows it; don’t expect a trade.
KP thought they were deep this year… so he’s is not going to give up depth.

When I refer to medicore ball handling...

I say it in the context of a PG model. I’m not talking about catching a pass and taking the ball to the rim. I’m not talking about using a screen and dribbling towards the hoop. I’m talking about being force to turn his back near half-court protecting the ball while trying to initiate the offense. I’m talking about timidly dribbling up the court against a ball hawk. These are PG responsibilities that are necessary.

It is a weakness. Acknowledging a weakness doesn’t take away from Bayless as scorer or potential playmaker. To me, it demonstrates a unfinished equation. Whether Bayless can complete that equation is up in the air, I tend to have my doubts since ball handling is a skill not easily learned at his stage as a player. It’s a mechanic skill that is much harder to master than shooting a jumpshot.

"I'm at the thingamajig talking the yakety-yak" - Kenny Smith

by blzrfan on Dec 18, 2009 1:16 AM PST up reply actions

I guess my point is that I think those who want to stick Bayless in a box and label him at 21

are being extremely hasty. If I were going to characterize his game at this point I would say he is a combo guard who is primarily a scorer, but who is rapidly learning to use his penetration skills to create opportunities for his teammates.

That basically says he isn’t ready to run the team by himself yet. But those who go further and say he is only a sixth man type who will never be a PG or a starter strike me as incredibly stupid. I have exactly the same reaction to all the folks who say Oden is a defensive center and will never be a consistent offensive threat, or the folks who characterize Batum as a defensive specialist.

These guys are 21 and 22 fricking year old. They each have a lot of physical tools and their games are undergoing a phase of rapid expansion. We don’t know where any of these guys will end up at age 25. If Bayless hasn’t learned to distribute the ball by age twenty five, then talk to me about Jason Terry. Until then, I think there is a lot of reason to believe that he can be more. Especially when paired with SGs like Brandon and Rudy who are good passers.

Sorry if I lumped you in with the doubters, that really isn’t fair and I hate it when people do that sort of thing to me. I respect your knowledge and your commenting skills.

by upper left corner on Dec 18, 2009 1:10 AM PST up reply actions

We disagree on the trajectory

I don’t think it’s stupid to say if Bayless will never be a PG or will only be a sixth man. These are decisions GMs must make every year when they evaluate their roster. The Lakers made a good decision to give up on Javaris Crittenton as a PG in his rookie season. He certainly didn’t get the chance to prove himself with consistent minutes in his time in LA.

We are all making decisions on partial knowledge and forecast. Just because one of us does not share the same forecast in evaluating the trajectory of a young player doesn’t make it invalid or less informed. I think it’s great to debate it. I don’t see it as a open and shut case until the age of 25.

"I'm at the thingamajig talking the yakety-yak" - Kenny Smith

by blzrfan on Dec 18, 2009 1:24 AM PST up reply actions

Yes, we do.

In my mind, the equation looks something like this

Outstanding physical skills + HoF Work Ethic + Brains + Burning desire to succeed =
High probability of success.

Does the fact that he is has the 2nd highest TS% and 4th highest PER of all the PGs in the league at the tender age of 21 mean nothing to you? You cite his high dribble, isn’t that something that can be fixed pretty easily?

Now if you said he didn’t have the size, or the speed, or the stroke, or the basic handle (like say Martell, or even Rudy), then I would understand you projecting a pretty low ceiling. I actually think Rudy will turn out to have the least long term impact of our four sophomores. He is the most skilled currently, but I see him as the closest to his ceiling and the most physically limited of the four.

On what factors do you base your projection of Bayless?

by upper left corner on Dec 18, 2009 1:58 AM PST up reply actions

I agree that he needs to tighten up his handle a little

if he is to become the full time starter, because right now he seems to slightly struggle with full court pressure when he is bringing the ball up and also the double team up top in the half court.

He is not given the chance...

Constantly is the shooting guard in a three-guard lineup. He is perfecting it, but he dished some quality dimes tonight. Given that time to develop, he can get his assists. He always relegates to his teammates, but nothing was working tonight for anyone else so he took on that offensive burden. Even as a 2, he dishes and looks for the open man more than Blake when he gets stagnant. Blake sees a double-team and tenses up, turns it over. Bayless is quick and can split it or dish it. It’s Blake’s reluctancy that gets him, Bayless has URGENCY, and that’s great, in a 2 or a 1. If he is destined to be a 2 guard, he will be a passing 2 guard. His assist numbers will only improve.

I would take Rondo over DWill

Top PGs

1) Paul
2) Rondo
3) Nash
4) DWill

.
5) Bayless heh heh

DWill will finally be an allstar, which he’s long deserved. Calling him the best in the NBA is an epic failure to understand advanced/pace adjusted stats.

Deron is better on the offensive end, but rondo is just a nightmare on the defensive end.

What?

Paul might not be a traditonal lock-down guy, but he’s an excellent team defender that generates 2+ steals per game. Plus, points per 100 possession for whoever CP3 has been guarding disputes your theory.

52 + 88 = 140% better team.

Deron benefits from always looking good when playing directly vs. Paul

Apart from that it’s not particularly close. Deron’s best season is barely better than Paul’s worst.

Bayless played what, 29 minutes? Charles Barkley basically called Nate out on TNT. “If they can’t find playing time for this kid even before the injuries, I don’t know what to say..” Man, Jerryd is just a straight up in your face baller. This team needs that toughness and grit on offense. Great lob pass for an Aldridge dunk earlier in the game. Great decision-making late. Very impressed.

Question is going forward can Nate seriously justify giving Blake or Miller more minutes than Jerryd? I’m not calling for Jerryd to start at PG just yet. But I gotta think he’s the 6th man for this team now. I see 25+ minutes in his future every night from now until Rudy returns. That’s when the real drama unfolds and Nate is forced to make more tough decisions.

Why is Randolph on that list?

Because we really did get nothing for him.Francis + Frye isn’t exactly a great haul, especially when Richard Jefferson was available.

52 + 88 = 140% better team.

by xedubx on Dec 18, 2009 12:00 AM PST up reply actions

Well, dodging RJeff

was a good thing, although I don’t really subscribe to the theory that he only reason we got Rudy was because of the trade exception.

I know

look how good Richard Jefferson has been for SA. Putting them over the top.

BAYLESS

What’s going to happen when Rudy comes back?

by BlazerKoolAid on Dec 17, 2009 11:40 PM PST reply actions

Rudy will have to play more 3

alongside two other guards

Get well Greg! Rip City is still behind you!

by axel360 on Dec 17, 2009 11:41 PM PST up reply actions

We trade one guard, or there will be not much playing time going around and 2 guys sitting a lot (Mills and ...)

But as we have seen on the SF position, depth can vanish in a hurry, so not sure KP feels like fixing this.

Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?

5 Guard Line-up

You can never have too many points.

They might even run the Oden-Oops play and run out 6 Guards when Patty is ready…

That was like a poem
It was beautiful, man.

What’s going to happen when Rudy comes back?

by blacknoiseNW on Dec 17, 2009 11:47 PM PST up reply actions

Hopefully he's gone by that time

1 of 2 things:

The right thing – Rudy will absorb most of the minutes currently going to Blake, who almost always plays with either Miller or Bayless on the floor now.
OR
The wrong thing – Rudy and Bayless split 25-30 minutes per game while we continue to play Blake 25 minutes a game as the shooting guard.

How did you guys win that?

When's the last time someone has seen two guards just take over a game like that, for any team?

It’s been a while for me. They put the team on their back, with a little help from folks like Martell in key moments.

One note on the opponents: Dragic is mighty fast, and the old Amare could be back soon

I have better hopes for Phoenix than before the season.

Yeah, Phoenix is solid

If not for Amare missing a bunch of makeable shots (that we made him work for, though), we probably lose this game.

Not so fast

It seemed to me that Nash was running right past him. Blake hit some good shots tonight though.

by Jeremazing on Dec 18, 2009 12:05 AM PST via mobile up reply actions

Doubt Magic would do that.

Bass has more trade value than Blake (even with Blake’s expiring contract) and Pietrus has WAY more trade value than Outlaw, plus Outlaw is injured and they are competing for a title. If we trade Blake and Outlaw it will be to a team that is ONLY looking for extra caproom

Get well Greg! Rip City is still behind you!

Here's to hoping

Bayless doesn’t get lost in the shuffle when Rudy, Batum, and Outlaw come back.

Payless

I was a sceptic of bayless at first but he proved to me he could get it done. I was really impressed.

Also I am coining the nickname Payless because we get more for our money when it comes to bayless.

One thing I was very impressed with tonight was Bayless’ playmaking. Before the scoring burst in the fourth, he was doing an excellent job of keeping offensive flow. He made several nice passes to open jump shooters.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside.
