He loves the city and his wife is from here, hopefully he replaces Mike Rice when he’s through playing

repost from first half thread-- typical Blazer '09-'10 half

- LMA and Roy with horrendous defense
- Roy underwhelming on offense
- LMA afraid of contact
- Blake leads the PGs in minutes for no apparent reason
- A center with 2 fouls plays limited minutes for no apparent reason

Rondo was obviously a much better bargain than LMA, but we already knew that.

The way I see it, LMA was overpaid by 5-10 mil or so and Rondo was a steal for the Celtics.

there is also not a lot of trust that our guys have in this depleted team

they don’t trust themselves and so they hesitate, and second guess themselves. This doesn’t allow them to take advantage of any mismatches, and playing late in the clock against a fast team, has allowed the Suns to get set on almost every one of our possessions.

by Hipster Olympic Team! on Dec 17, 2009 9:47 PM PST up reply actions

That isn't the biggest problem

The biggest problem is we have no direction. No identity. That equals to us being a bad offensive team and crappy defensive team. Zero ability by the coaching staff to develop players as well. That’s on Nate.

things we need in order to contend

- Roy ‘08-’09
- LMA ‘08-’09
- A healthy Oden playing like he did this year, but for 35 mpg

- healthy role players better than Blake and Webster (ie an improved Rudy and Batum)

The Dre/Blake thing?

It is mostly Nate’s fault from my POV, but goodness… if Oden and Friend are healthy and (most of all) if Roy is good, it doesn’t matter so much.

With so much having gone wrong, the ‘littler’ stuff becomes major.

#52

by Mortimer on Dec 17, 2009 10:00 PM PST up reply actions

I think the rotation problems

That are mostly Nate, are pretty much caused by the real problems.

It’s an impossible situation when Roy plays bad and our team gets gutted.

#52

by Mortimer on Dec 17, 2009 10:01 PM PST up reply actions

the handling of the PG situation has been pathetic.

A championship coach would have started Andre from day 1 in training camp. A good coach wouldn’t have needed 25 games to figure out that Blake wasn’t deserving of a starting spot.

A championship coach wouldn’t be changing the rotations every game, and not even based on who’s playing well.

A championship coach would have handled Oden’s minutes better.

Fairness dictates Nate should get another year. This isn’t about fairness. Its about figuring out that Nate’s career history— his teams don’t defend well, never run, he doesn’t adjust well to new personnel, etc— dictate that he’s not the guy to take us all the way. To me, its incredibly clear.

What's great about the Suns offense is that they rely on execution rather than individual isolations.

Those V-cuts by Nash creates opportunity. They run out to seek mismatches then exploit them. Screeners are cutting fast to the hoop or to the 3-point line The Blazers are the plodding bunch that rely on superior individual talent to win games.

You think Roy embraced Miller? Roy is still not that experienced to know how to use a monster like Oden. But first Oden should be on the floor.

And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.

by RipCity on Dec 17, 2009 10:09 PM PST up reply actions

They might be overblown but if I were Roy I would come out and say, that Miller is a veteran and we will learn how to play together.

But Roy was saying something like, oh I dont know how to play with Miller I love Blake.

And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.

personal pet peeve: complaining about fts when its not merited

we are a 78.5% shooting team. That means, on average, we’d make 22.8 fts out of 29. Today we’ve made 21. That is not choking at the line.

Also, Roy is not a bad FT shooter. He’s 80%. That means he will miss roughly one out of every 5 he takes. We shouldn’t be shocked or pissed when it happens.

End rant.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
