Junk Drawer 12/16 - Worst Andre Miller Day Ever
Someone else should have made today's Junk Drawer. Because I came up with a lame topic.
I think we need to come up with a ranking system for trade rumors. In the past week all three Blazers point guard's names came up. The Bayless rumor was probably the worst. Andre Miller Day was a bust, and the Blake speculation that Ben linked on the front page looks like it was written to be a "Start Miller" FanPost on Blazers Edge.
I think the ranking should be something like this:
Mindless Speculation
Spectulation
Researched Speculation
Made Up Rumor
Rumor
Official Rumor
I think Andre Miller Day was Mindless Speculation, the Bayless Rumor was Made Up, and the Blake stuff was Researched Speculation. I'm not sure if "ranking" is the correct term since something made up is probably worse than something someone came up with while playing with the trade machine.
If you don't like this topic, then what is your favorite John Cusack movie?

I like this topic. Both of them actually.
I think your rankings and categories seem pretty reasonable. I still don’t think any trade will happen this year unless it’s a big trade that no one sees coming. Just doesn’t seem to make enough sense to me with the injury situation what it is. But what do I know.
My favorite John Cusack movie is High Fidelity. Followed by Say Anything and then Grosse Point Blank. I fear to say that I’ve never seen Better Off Dead. Don’t hate me, Tom.
Heck yeah. My fav as well.

One Crazy Summer
Is kind of a sequel to it. Here is how Wiki describes it.
Sometimes described as “Better Off Dead Goes to the Beach”, due to the same director and several returning cast members (Cusack, Armstrong, Negron, Waterbury) from the classic 1985 comedy. Additionally, the characters Hoops and Lane Meyer are both cartoonists.
Saw both last year.
Better Off Dead is definitely, um, better.
Hit it. Yes he did. Ohhhh yeah.

I signed in to say that High Fidelity is one of the my most hated movies.
I found John Cusack’s character to be repulsive. He was an selfish whiner with no redeeming qualities. I began actively rooting against him and hoped he would he get his comeuppance. Unfortunately, I couldn’t finish the movie both times I tried watching.

part of the reason i liked it so much is because he realizes all the stuff he’s doing wrong in a more realistic way rather than “rom-com” way.

Even if he turned it around by the end of the film, I would just hate the script instead.

they are well written, but they do tend to be about damaged people figuring things out

I consider Cusack's character to be a selfish jerk
The film didn’t establish any reason to give him the benefit of the doubt of being a damaged person. He began the film as an self-important know-it-all and the movie didn’t give me a reason to care if he changed.

I get really down on myself when I read a trade post
I always look at it and ask myself if I should read it or not. Then I cave and check it out. Then I feel depressed for having read it knowing I shouldn’t have bothered. I can’t recall one trade proposal I’ve ever read that seemed realistic or doable. Like those old “What If?” Comics. Well, frankly Spiderman is never going to battle Hulk. Just not going to happen so don’t bother.
"In order to keep a true perspective of one's importance, everyone should have a dog that will worship him and a cat that will ignore him."
High Fidelity. Love that movie. Those guys standing around debating music for hours is exactly what my friends used to and sometimes still do.
Bayless will definitely shave his head before Manu.. Manu’s hair loss seems to have plateaued, where as Jarryd is very young and still losing it. I’m surprised Williams hasn’t shaved it yet.

Better Off Dead
I was at the game last night. It was fun. Tyreke Evans is going to be solid, no doubt.
I sat behind the “old season ticket holder with a radio who doesn’t understand that you don’t have to yell when you are wearing headphones” guy. He was pretty funny. Every time Sergio got the ball, he’d yell, “Let ‘im shoot. He ain’t gunna make it. He is the worst shooter in the NBA!”
After Blake made a play in the 2nd quarter (I think) Bayless got so pumped up and excited he slapped Blake’s butt super hard. It musta hurt. It was a full windup. You could tell Blake thought it was a little awkward.
Anyone know why BRoy went back into the locker room in the second quarter? I saw that and got a little scared.
I get the paper, so I don't care!
I remember that
Blake had just hit a three to make it 75-74 and Bayless smacked him really hard on the gluteus.

I just saw the replay. Bayless hit Blake on that one, but the one I am referring to was earlier in the game. It was in the first half. Bayless really slapped him hard. I think tominhawaii was looking for Bayless pumping his teammates evidence, but I can’t find it.
I get the paper, so I don't care!
Bayless is exterting physical dominance over Blake by doing so
Treating him like the lil’ brother who did somethng good when he makes a shot. Subverting the previous established relationship. Bayless probably thought it out in his head, too.
#52
That is exactly what it looked like. It was awkward. Seeing the younger guy going silverback on the veteran.
I get the paper, so I don't care!
It is what he is doing
I have no doubts, and it is awesome.
Bayless is alpha male. It’s why Oden and Jennings love him so much. They want him to slap their bottom approvingly as well!
#52
that is awesome
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"

#52
But Blake kinda reacted like, “why is turtle boy hitting me so hard?”
I get the paper, so I don't care!
I saw it as him knowing what just took place
And a warm shadow of acceptance passed over his face.
He might have been confused at first, because it was ouchie, but then it dawned on him… he was passed.

I'm about to watch the 2nd half
I’ll look for it.

Dwyer with some nice comments
All sorts of impressive from LaMarcus Aldridge(notes) in this win.
He scored 29 points, 19 of them in the second half, on a number of different moves and feints. Used to that. Fantastic offensive player.
It was the drive, though, that had him putting it down in the second half that had me happy. Better? Five assists, for one of the least-willing post passers in the game (that isn’t to say he’s selfish, so stop it, that’s just to say he thinks himself out of passing or handing the ball off quite a bit), and nine rebounds in what was a pretty slow (85 possessions) game.
Then there was Brandon Roy(notes) dropping 25 with 10 assists (five boards, five turnovers), and that’s about all Portland had.
OK, that’s too easy. Jerryd Bayless(notes) had another good, quick game with 14 points in 24 minutes off the bench,
Also, I’d like to only briefly mention LMA’s sore ankle, if I could. The thought of another Blazer going down, for any stretch, is just numbing at this point.

really?
i can’t imagine politics mattering at all for me in a relationship.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 16, 2009 12:52 PM PST up reply actions
It depends on how strongly they feel about the 'politics'.
If they are a birther, it’s a no go.
If they think Palin is a reasonable lady who would make a great VP, I’d love to hear the explanation but if it doesn’t “win me over”, then it’s a no go.
SORRY LADIES.
#52
i could care less what they think about politcal things.
i just don’t get why it’s important i guess. unless they insist on discussing them all the time. then that’d be a problem for me.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 16, 2009 12:57 PM PST up reply actions
To me it all depends on the reasons for their beliefs, how they express them, and how strongly they feel
If someone thinks Bush is behind every bad thing that ever happened to America, I’d have a hard time being with them as well.
It’s a matter of INTELLIGENCE, dtl!!!!
#52
intelligence?
i’ve never found that important. i go for the dummies.
seriously though, there are some political points I guess I would feel strongly about, but not so strongly that I’d want it to affect a relationship with someone I care about. If it’s something that needs to remain unspoken, then so be it. some stuff is more important that if you think Palin is a moronn.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 16, 2009 1:01 PM PST up reply actions
It;s the "I care about" thing that's the hurdle. There are some ideas that
would set the “I care about” bar way too high for me to get over in the first place.
that makes sense.
i just can’t imagine myself in that position.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 16, 2009 1:03 PM PST up reply actions
Without getting into particulars, there are certain political points of view
that I view as forms of contagion. I’d rather sleep with lepers.
Me too
It all depends on the person. There is no set line I have, or even thought about, with what a lady-friend is “allowed” to think, and it’s like I am with the Blazers… as long as they ain’t gonna give me a hard time about being a Blazer fan and watching each game…
But somethings, if they believe in it firmly enough, it sets off a warning bell.
#52
I think because with politics
It’s not so much that the person doesn’t believe the same thing as you, it’s when it’s “I CAN’T F-WORDING BELIEVE HE/SHE BELIEVES THAT CRAP!”
I don’t even know what my wife thinks politically and I’m not sure what she thinks about god.
see this is where I stand too, I think.
as long as they don’t get all indignant and what not, i don’t care about their politics. heck, i’m not even registered to vote.

I don't think it'd be appropriate for me to say.
Let’s just say that he lived up to his claim for making bold and amazing bets, and I cannot believe that she would have agreed to make a bet like that. Although I understand now why she wouldn’t tell anyone the conditions of the bet until someone one.. it’s pretty easy to imagine collusion when the wager involves banned bedgers.

by The Arkitect on Dec 16, 2009 11:42 AM PST up reply actions
it really was.
they shoot about 3 or 4 times before making the layup. then one guy put his key in the middle, and the other put it right beside, not in the corner. Then they each made 1 out of another 3-5 shots and ended up not blocking one another so they each needed the same square to win. The ensuing lay up shooting contest was one of the better nail biting displays of ineptitude i’ve seen in a while.

ESPN Rumor Central Reports (Insider Only)
Blake to Heat?
There has been talk that Andre Miller doesn’t fit with the Blazers and that he could be dealt. However, ESPN.com’s Chad Ford writes that Steve Blake is the one most likely to be traded.
Ford writes: “Two general managers told me they’ve called the Blazers to inquire about Miller’s availability and been told that Miller isn’t available right now. Rather, those two GMs have reason to believe that Portland GM Kevin Pritichard is shopping Blake. Why Blake? One reason is that he’s struggled to get the offense going smoothly … Two, Blake is easier to move and may have more trade value. … Three, in the opinion of one GM, the Blazers won’t be quick to give up on Miller.”
Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel writes that one possible destination for Blake is Miami.
“Keep in mind, as well, that the trade exception the Heat holds from last February’s Shawn Marion-Jermaine O’Neal trade also would accommodate Blazers point guard Steve Blake, a player who long has interested the Heat. The trade exception would allow the Heat to then include Daequan Cook or another lower-priced player in such a deal with Portland.”
The trade exception is worth $4.26 million and was generated from Marcus Banks’ contract.

Isn't the entire point of todays JD to banish all trade speculation forever
"In order to keep a true perspective of one's importance, everyone should have a dog that will worship him and a cat that will ignore him."
Haslem would be a perfect backup 4
Can rebound, fits Nate’s system if our backup 4 HAS to be able to hit a jumper, works hard, definitely not as talented as LMA so no “battle for minutes”… etc.
I doubt Miami does that UNLESS they wanna bolster their PG rotation with Blake and get Beasley more minutes at PF.
#52
How is that a rumor?
If Mortimer has 20 bucks and I got 20 bucks of poop with a mail in rebate, it doesn’t mean Mortimer wants to buy my poop.
There is no source to Miami. Ford read BE and wrote that. Ira Winderman read it, got on the trade machine and decided to trade Blake to a few teams. He got to Blake, saw the two trade exceptions at the bottom and wrote what he wrote. ESPN just made it a rumor by adding the two together.
Basically what we got here is a Speculation + Speculation = Rumor
It’s a whole new level of Trade Rumor.
by tominhawaii on Dec 16, 2009 12:19 PM PST up reply actions
I don't think you get it
Blake is from Miami, a fact that may or prolly isn’t known by the Miami heat front office.
Therefore, since they are a small town like Portland is, they lust and crave after every NBA player who once rented an apartment as a child in the Miami metropolitan area.
It is a fact. Local kids always do well in their hometown team, like Lebron is doing for Cleveland.

for some its the same thing
i like my blazers bc they are class acts on and off the court…during the KP era it seems like every returning blazer to the RG gets an applause in one shape or form.
i dont like separating the personal and the professional side of athletes. that is also why all of tigers major sponsors are dumping him too….people are buying the image as well as the athlete. (nike has too much invested in him to cut him loose tho)
I'm going on a Dave boycott until AK1984 is brought back.
by Philthyanimal on Dec 16, 2009 4:15 PM PST up reply actions
i have to seperate the personal and professional on some level.
or else i’d have a hard time cheering for anyone. some people do worse stuff than others, but their lives are their lives and I probably wouldn’t agree with a lot of what they do. Infidelity, for instance, probably runs rampant in all pro sports.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 16, 2009 4:17 PM PST up reply actions
i dont agree
the reason certain athletes are paid the way they are thru endorsements are bc of their images. Peyton Manning = tons of endorsements bc he is squeeky clean. Compare him to Vick when both were at the top of their games. It wasn’t even close.
High profile athletes are more than just athletes, they are role models. Just like teachers do more than teach…they counsel, they give advice, they tutor kids after class, and are role models as well.
I'm going on a Dave boycott until AK1984 is brought back.
by Philthyanimal on Dec 16, 2009 4:20 PM PST up reply actions
this is probably an agree to disagree situation.
i wouldn’t think of athletes as role models. I get that a better image means more endorsements, but the image of pro athletes can be so swayed, that nearly doesn’t matter. Unless they do something really really horrendous images can get repaired pretty easily with enough time. Like with Tiger, some of those endorsements will probably come back after this blows over.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 16, 2009 4:22 PM PST up reply actions
a lot of kids do look up to athletes
by portlandgiirl91 on Dec 16, 2009 4:26 PM PST up reply actions
then society needs to stop paying them so much money
the money they are being paid to endorse a product has more to do with their image and marketability than it does their athletic performance.

If someone is endorsing products and makes a lot of money from it
They should be mindful of their reputation, but relying on every athlete to be a role model isn’t really fair.
Yeah, they gotta be mindful that they are being watched and be smart about it…
#52
agreed
not every athlete is a role model…just the superstar ones.
i dunno i also notice that ever since britney, lindsay, and paris became pop culture icons back a few years ago…a lot of women in general have become more openly promiscuous than before.

i guess i don't have a good answer for you, Phil.
personally, I wouldn’t have dumped Tiger or Kobe. What they did is wrong, flat out, no excuses, wrong. And I don’t like it. But they will still be profitable, marketable people. You just have to ride out the storm. I don’t think people are gonna decide to go with a company just because they drop someone so why not just put them on the back burner, wait for something to blow over, and then bring them back.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 16, 2009 4:31 PM PST up reply actions
they will
look at that show Jersey Shore…sponsors are pulling their ads left and right because they don’t want to be associated with that show. how can you blame them?
if you don’t think that people are gonna buy something bc a certain person has their name on the box, then i doubt those companies would spend their millions of advertising dollars uneffectively to Tiger and other athletes when they dont need the money.
everything is about branding these days.

And not to bring this up for a lengthy debate, but I think the evidence suggests the girl had serious mental issues and it was consensual, but she regretted it, and things spiraled out of control.

Kobe likely did the pseudo-strangle thing that a girl in NYC let’s him do, according to his statements.
That is enough gross details.
And then when he admitted he slept with the girl and others, he tells the police WELL SHAQ IS TOO.
That made it to the public quickly.

It's fun being negative
The only reason the Blazers won last night was because of Joel’s defense and Roy and LaMarcus. I don’t care how good Tyreke Evans is, he’s still a rookie and none of the Blazers guards could guard him. Bayless is getting all the credit for not screwing up and then making a hockey assist from Roy with 17 seconds left. Miller pretty much only played with Joel in the game, Joel was playing great, and somehow Miller had a negative +/-.
I watched the game focusing on Miller and Bayless while making a mental note of their mistakes and misses. We should have an essay contest where we all watch a different player during the game, focus on their mistakes, and then write an essay about it. We’d have to have people at the game to watch all the injured players.

The game on it’s own wasn’t a big deal, but that he played nice and smart in crunch time minutes was big, and that he kept up his strong efficient play in big minutes and not in 10 minutes total.
Not a breakout game, but a game he can easily duplicate regularly, and it can really help us.

sure, his passing isn’t highlight-reel sweet… but the key is really him passing enough that he isn’t an endpoint, he needs to be both a conduit and an endpoint playing with so many options. he’s not killing offensive flow, so that’s good enough.

Always remember The Bayless Theory
It isn’t a pure PG we’re looking for, in theory.
It is a combo-guard who can guard PGs, which is usually what combo guards CAN’T do.
The ability to set up the offense in a basic way, create either his own shot or a simple pass off (Bayless can do that now), and have a good enough jumper to not be left open regularly.
Good offense + the ability to defend PGs. That’s all!
#52
yes i get that.
i suppose that’s just not a type of PG i particularly care for so i’m probably more critical than I should be.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 16, 2009 2:53 PM PST up reply actions
I ain't trying to be snarky
What sort of PG would you like?
I think it begins with someone who can guard PGs and hit a jumper, and then we’d hope for someone who can also create.
#52
to me, PG defense is overrated.
you just have to be able to make a guy work to get around you, but with no hand-checking, any NBA PG can get around any other NBA PG. Rondo and Paul are the best defensive PG’s I think, and they’re miles ahead of most.
Passing is the most important thing in a PG to me. Making easy passes and hard ones. Simple entry passes and pick and roll passes as well as backdoor passes, touch passes. The thing I most want in a PG is great passing skills.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 16, 2009 3:03 PM PST up reply actions
Any PG can get around anyone
But having a guy so easy to get around (like Blake, though it isn’t his fault) just makes the rest of our defense have to work that much harder. And gets Oden into foul trouble.
Bayless needs to show he can keep up the smart passing ability, but we’re a different case because of Roy… ya want Bayless to hopefully be a good passer, but being able to create his own offense (like we saw in the playoffs, ya shut down Roy’s playmaking and no one else can do anything) and hit a jumper means that teams have to pick their poison on the perimeter (like Norskie Pie sez).
I agree, passing is important, but defense and efficient offense next to Roy may help more.
He’s GOTTA be able to be an offensive conduit and have the ability to set up the offense so Roy doesn’t have to do it all, though.
#52
yes, i agree with you here.
i wasn’t saying what PG i’d like best for the system the Blazers run, just what I want in a PG overall.
for the Blazers, I actually think Blake fits the system, he’s just playing like crap right now. Last year’s Blake was perfect for what the Blazers do.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 16, 2009 3:15 PM PST up reply actions
I think Blake was "good enough"
Because he was hitting 3’s every night, BUT his lack of ability to create offense for himself or anyone else really hurt us.
He knows what to do on defense and tries hard but is just athletically not capable against even 2nd string guards. That was a problem too.
If he isn’t hitting 3’s at a high percentage, his lack of being able to do PG stuff like create offense hurts us, like in the playoffs. I think a version of Blake that is just able to create a lil’ more and play a lil’ better defense would be perfect.
That is The Hinrich Theory, of course.

If Bayless continues to score at a 62% TS and doesn’t hurt the team by not passing, that is a ridiculous weapon next to Brandon.

I think there are enough playmakers on the Blazers
(when healthy) that the PG doesn’t need to create offense for himself, just get the ball to the right people at the right spots effectively.
As the team is right now, Bayless is way the better option because we do need people that can create offense for themselves.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 16, 2009 3:19 PM PST up reply actions
as people who can create for themselves?
Outlaw can. Rudy can (but doesn’t very much). Batum did in Euro league.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 16, 2009 3:22 PM PST up reply actions
I don't know about Rudy
to me, he settles for that wild turn around fadeaway or the stepback 3, neither of which are very high percentage shots.
It’s different when he’s running the P and R with LMA/Greg because of his passing ability, but creating purely by himself? nah.

i thin Rudy can. I mean, he has the ability.
but he either doesn’t know how to utilize it or just doesn’t want to. It’s frustrating. I think some more weight/muscle would help. He’s probably just afraid of contact.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 16, 2009 3:35 PM PST up reply actions
I say it's a combo of a bad first step
(lack of explosiveness, even though he is quick) and poor ballhandling for a guard.
#52
Yeah, but they are end points for the most part
I think Batum definitely has point forward potential, but it’s still just potential.
Rudy is a good passer but bad creator on his own, and Outlaw is definitely just an end point.
Ya stop Roy last year, and you got nothing but guys who can only score for themselves. Thi year we have Dre as well, but he’s been up and down AND is only a stop-gap.
We’d like Bayless and Batum to be able to create for themselves AND others, but it’s still just potential. Otherwise, we’re weak offensively when another good team prevents Roy from playmaking.
#52
That's how I see it
I’d like two guys on the perimeter who can be relied upon to create, and 3 would be awesome as long as they don’t NEED to be creating to be useful.
The offense will be able to run through Oden otherwise, because he’s a great passer.
We will be fine, but need at least 2 perimeter creators…
#52
I think we potentially could have 3
depending on Batum’s development.

it's like you guys keep switching conversatios on me.
haha. or else i dont’ get what you’re talking about. I thought were were talking about guys that can create their own offense (ie get shots, which I guess would mean they would be endpoints).
i’m starting to feel like a dunce for real, not just because Roybot implies i’m stupid.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 16, 2009 3:36 PM PST up reply actions
"Create offense"
Has different meanings… for THIS conversation—
We don’t only mean “create for themselves”, even though that is something our PGs have not been able to do until now with Dre and Bayless.
We mean, by “creating offense”, we mean offense for all. Doesn’t have to be great at creating for others to be our PG, as long as they can play defense.
Outlaw can only create for himself, and Rudy needs others to creatr for him except in specific scenarios.
#52

Uh, YEAH.
I’m gonna start saying that when I get TOTALLY THRASHED in an important debate as well.

#52
I think the three keys of Bayless, in order of necessity are:
(1) hitting three point shots at a 37+% clip.
(2) defending the opposing point guards.
(3) being a successful conduit in the offense and not being a Juan Dixon-esque endpoint.
get well soon, big guy.
#52
(4) Bringing the ball up court without turning it over
Those were always the criteria for any guard playing alongside Roy at the 1.
Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?
please feel free to give me a lesson,
but doesn’t your 3rd point kind of go against your 1st one? If you think him hitting 37% of threes is most important, doesn’t that mean he has to be an endpoint on offense quite a bit of the time?
I’d say continuing to attack the rim is the most important, then not turning the ball over, defense, then hitting shots.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 16, 2009 2:58 PM PST up reply actions
the key in offense is efficiency. If he is hitting threes at a 37+% clip, then it is an effective shot that should be taken.
The endpoint/conduit discussion is someone who kills the offense by taking inefficient shots and forgetting about their teammates. Bayless should try to score, he’s the most efficient guard on the roster… but in that, he needs to use his scoring abilities to both score and collapse the defense.
get well soon, big guy.
#52
Ideally its both. If Roy gets covered (often double-teamed), someone else needs to be able to make things happen on offense. Either create his own shot, or stand on the perimeter and get a kickout from Roy for the catch and shot. Blake can do the later, but not create his own shots. Bayless can, and also draws fouls at an ungodly rate. If he also could shoot it welll, advantage B-Rex. And it helps disrupt opposing defenses if they have to pick their poison which guard/wing to cover.
In a three guard lineup like yesterday, there is almost no SF who can stay in front of Bayless and his very quick first step even though that’s an odd lineup.
Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?

truly though, the stats say that he has been the same playmaker as Bayless with twice the turnovers. So that’s not great.

he’s shooting 37% from three with an awful three point shot selection from what I’ve seen.

He may not be a great position defender, but his steal rate of 2.7% is certainly nice (and inflated in GS). Steals are fantastic because they result in offensive efficiency and don’t allow offensive rebounds.

I'll give you a great example of why I hate assists
If you want the longer version, just read something I wrote earlier this season.
Basically what I hate about assists is the kind of play I’ll describe. Jason Thompson gets the ball in the post against David West (or some Hornets post man). He then passes out to Omri Casspi on the 3 point line who in turn drives to the basket and scores.
Now, I love the play, but I hate the fact that JT got an assist on it. What did he really do for Omri other than pass him the ball? Omri made a great play, as did JT, but the assist itself was pointless. JT"s pass didn’t lead to Omri’s basket directly, and Omri really made the play because it was head’s up.
Assists, to quote TZ, are so problematic.

What if JT waited to draw the double team, and then he passed it to the open man (Omri) for an open shot. Then you could say that JT did something.
I get the paper, so I don't care!
I agree
But that’s not what happened. The play was made because Omri drove to the cup. I’m not saying JT didn’t make a good play. What I’m saying is that Omri took an opportunity to make a great play on his own.
The pass was scored as an assist. Really passing is the one area that is completely unquantified by numbers, and that’s why so many teams have an advantage over fans.

See, assists are subjective, but are especially useful for comparing players within the context of a team. AKA comparing Tyreke’s playmaking to Speed’s, you can get a really good idea.

#52
There's no point in doing that.

the point is that the stats absolutely back up Tyreke as a far superior distributor.
Assists may be inflated, but they also are valuable data.
get well soon, big guy.
#52
The question I have is what value do they really illuminate?
I think comparing assists from era to era is difficult given how different every era is.
I also think comparing assists from team to team doesn’t mean much.
Maybe in the team dynamic it does, but I’m skeptical depending on the “quality” of the assist.
Meh, I hate assists. LOL

#52
Here's what I hate about them
They’re all lumped under one category even though we all know assists are not completely the same.
Points are broken down differently, rebounds too, and what not.
I just wish we had a completely better way to quantify passing. What I hate is assists are judged and what not.
And by doing that, it creates a very different standard for how John Hollinger would create PER. Creating a new standard would be a huge paradigm shift for a lot of people.
Probably why I dislike assists so much.

you can say the same about interceptions and turnovers
there are so many interceptions that are not the fault of the qb….and there are other bad balls that shoud have been intercepted.
all in all its a flawed system, and if you are looking at 1 game as a sample size, you are going to get skewed results. however if you look at the season or a career as a whole it’ll all pan out.

Assists ain't perfect
But there is clearly a super strong relationship between the best playmakers, and the number of asists they get.
There isn’t anyone who regularly gets a lot of assists who isn’t a good playmaker.
It isn’t perfect, but it’s a very good way to know who is a good passer and playmaker.

That's what I thought
But the active, running offense just makes more chances for a guard to get assists, I mean.
More chance for turnovers, more chance for assists, with an offense built for quick shots (even if they are bad ones), meaning more assists— raw, and percentage wise.
GOR is right, Nelly also has lots of iso play, which hurts assist rates…

i think you have to give him some slack on the turnovers though. Part of that is where he plays and that system of run and throw it ahead. Nobody on that team that handles the ball and plays serious minutes averages less than 2 turnovers a game, outside of Anthony Morrow

i think that it should be a good game
both teams are actually rated pretty high defensively, the mavs may steal it just because dirk is that clutch, and no one, especially on the thunder can stop him, but you never know.
14736251
I don’t see that comparison. Durant seems much more like Melo to my eyes.
get well soon, big guy.
#52
Inverse Melo
When Durant came into the league I said he could be an athletic Dirk, but I don’t think he’s all that much more athletic.
I think it’s a fair comparison, and he’d maybe get as many boards as Dirk if he was a PF, but he’s just too skinny to do what Dirk does I guess.
#52
Dirk is a 4/5, Durant is a 3/4.
Durant’s game just isn’t post-up oriented like Dirk’s is.
get well soon, big guy.
#52
but he gets the ball by posting at the elbow a lot of the time. Durant gets the ball out top like Melo.
get well soon, big guy.
#52
yes.
plus, Dirk has so many post moves and moves on top of other moves it’s insane.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 16, 2009 3:16 PM PST up reply actions
Yup
An argument could be made that Durant is a cross between T-Mac, Melo, and Dirk. But he’s not really Dirk. There is nobody quite like him, and it’s certainly not Durant who has superior handles but not the same style of creating his offense.
Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?
that is a fair point..they're both big, they both face up a lot, both are very capable of driving the lane and putting in crazy shots.
but you’re right. next time I’ll say, “Boy, Kevin Durant sure has some similar characteristics to Dirk, even though he’s not a 100% port replica of him*”
*also, I realize that Dirk plays the 4/5 while Durant plays 3/4, even though both face up a lot. This is not a directly analogous comparison, and my views do not necessarily represent those of Blazer Sedge or Blazersedge.com No rights reserved or implied.
I just don’t think they are THAT similar. Very different types of perimeter play, ya know? Durant is the quintessential get the ball at the top of the key and create. The reason Dirk is so, so deadly is his mid-post ability and the way that he is able to pass out of it.
There definitely are some similarities, they’re both very efficient and primarily perimeter dudes.
get well soon, big guy.
#52
word
Durant doesn’t use his athleticism like Melo does…at least not yet.
Bear in mind, I’ve seen approximately one half of one OKC game this year.
Durant scores from outside, Melo from inside. Statistically, though, Kevin Martin is probably Durant’s closest comp at this point (other than the rebounding due to different positions, natch)
get well soon, big guy.
#52
That's how I see it too
K-Mart, with more defensive potential due to his extreme length… less explosive than a healthy K-Mart as well, but as good of a shooter and gets to the line.
Even though I predicted he’d be like Dirk, I agree, he is like a Melo who shoots outside a lot more.
#52
Melo has gotten better on 2 ends as he's gotten older
Maturity, and not just the stupid off the court crap, has helped Melo a lot too. Can’t really discount that.

Blazers have received a hardship exception from the NBA
http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindblazersbeat/2009/12/nba_awards_trail_blazers_a_har.html
A la Golden State. Essentially they can sign a 16th player from the DL or available free agents for games and/or practices for two weeks at a time, until the next long-term injured guy returns. Not sure if that would be Jeff, or if it would be valid until Rudy comes back. We discussed this briefly, now Tom Penn made it happen.

# Unusual scenes both before and after the game for Shavlik Randolph, who was making his first return to the Rose City since signing with the Miami Heat. Before the game, Randolph was greeted like a Prom King, shaking hands with Blazers players, coaches, media members, fans, ushers, folding chairs, you name it. Had Randolph been so appreciated last year perhaps he would still be in a Blazers uniform, but I digress. He wasn’t in anyone’s uniform tonight, though, as he was on Miami’s inactive list. He made the most of it by wearing an awesome cream suit.
#After the game, things got truly weird as I finally caught up to Randolph while he was boarding the Heat bus for the airport. He had just finished taking off his shoes and enduring a mandatory pat-down and magic wand wave, the Sebastian Telfair Security Screening, I believe it’s called. The purpose, of course, is to ensure that no explosives or weapons find their way onto the team bus and plane. As soon as I got Randolph’s attention he immediately broke into his typical ear-to-ear smile, his spirits particularly high thanks to what he called the Heat’s “huge win” to start a tough road trip. Anyway, the hijinks really started when we attempted to shake hands. A security officer informed Randolph in a grave voice, “you can’t touch him.” After checking to make sure the officer was serious — he was, the penalty for a handshake would have been going through the entire security process again — Randolph hilariously signaled that we might settle for an “Air High Five.” Which we did. I kid you not. All in all: a minor moment over the course of a long trip but a happy one for one of the happiest-go-luckiest guys in the NBA. Add Randolph’s name to the list of recent former Blazers who find themselves in better situations once they’ve left town: Frye, Jack, Rodriguez, etc.

Both a combo of other team’s just missing shots at an unsustainable rate, and having a combo of two great defensive centers in Oden and Joel.

Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?
Zone defense should be abolished
If only to stop coaches from using them. Nothing good comes out of zones and if I were a Mavs fan, I would be concerned with how much the Mavs are relying on it.

Harden doesn’t have a right hand so that’s holding him back. While he was the ASU top scorer, he wasn’t the dominant offensive force.

the more I watch the Thunder, the more I wonder why they are everyone’s hot young team. This style of play is doomed to fail in the playoffs.
Westbrook hasn’t improved offensively, Green still isn’t very good, and Harden isn’t really a third overall pick.

He explained during a break that initially he played SF and his first coach(es) let him shoot those even though at that time he wasn’t a good outside shooter. And played handball and tennis which helped his speed and lateral moves. He has amazing balance and flexibility for such a big player.
Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?
smh I knew he did, he was a SF in nba 2k2. I remember seeing a lot of weird positions in that game, players evolve a lot over the years.
get well soon, big guy.
#52
I'm just saying your argument for dirk being a 4/5 unlike durant a 4/3
is true, but just wanted to give a friendly reminder that a lot is influenced by
1) age and stage in your development as a player
2) who you’re playing with
I meant more that Dirk operates from the post (mid-post, face-up game) and Durant operates from the top of the key. Durant’s game favors the 3, Dirk’s style has always been a bit different. He’s an odd player that shoots turnaround fadeaway one-legged shots with hands in his face.

Durant with an off night
He occasionally has those where he shoots just around 20 to 30 percent. That would likely cost you dearly in the playoffs. The Mavs didn’t even do anything special to stop him, just put some fairly long defenders on him.

by Roybot on Nov 11, 2009 1:41 AM PST
Not as lopsided anymore with how Marc Gasol is coming along. People also underappreciate his qualities - and he's much cheaper and younger.
Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?
but that's revisionist history
at the time of the trade it was nearly collusion. Ok, I kid, but it was terrible.
You won.
by Roybot on Nov 11, 2009 1:41 AM PST
exactly
a prospect and some picks for Pau Gasol
that wasn’t a good trade. One of the best centers playing the game is dealt for cap relief and draft picks/rights. Just because one of them panned out into an above average center 2 years later doesn’t make it a good trade at the time.
You won.
by Roybot on Nov 11, 2009 1:41 AM PST
they were going nowhere with the team they had
its the equivalent of a non-contending baseball team trading an Ace pitcher for prospects. It often makes sense to do so and sometimes ends up looking great.
#52
but a package of
Kwame Brown, Javaris Crittenton, Aaron McKie, the draft rights to Marc Gasol and first round picks in 2008 and 2010 is trash.
Brown sucks. I don’t even know if Crittenton or Mckie have logged NBA minutes since then and the Lakers’ ’08 and ’10 picks were/will be at the bottom of the first round.
So, basically, they traded Pau Gasol for Marc Gasol and cap relief, only they didn’t know Marc would pan out. Terrible trade for Memphis.
You won.
by Roybot on Nov 11, 2009 1:41 AM PST
I totally disagree.
They were going nowhere and a star who was going to leave for nothing, and they got a great prospect, 3 picks, tons of cap relief and a better pick (because Pau left and made them worse).
By your logic no MLB team should ever trade major league talent for minor league talent.
#52
I don't remember Marc Gasol being called a "great prospect"
I remember people being worried he was a fatter, slower, less talented version of his brother that might make it or might not. Luckily, Marc is a good NBA player.
The picks they got were complete trash. End of the 1st round. Trash. They didn’t get a top 5 pick; they got nothing.
They got cap relief and a Euro prospect. They could have gotten a better deal for Pau.
You won.
by Roybot on Nov 11, 2009 1:41 AM PST
oh and I don't follow baseball, so I can't address your point there
(baseball sux)
You won.
by Roybot on Nov 11, 2009 1:41 AM PST
Well, perhaps they could have done better, but we don't know that.
They were right to trade and they got a good package.
Where Marc was drafted is irrelevant. At the time of the trade he was putting up great numbers in Spain. Maybe they had an idea of how good he would be. Maybe they just got lucky. Hard to know.
If that package was they best they were offered, then they made the right decision to make the move.
#52
I've been suspicious of that trade since it was announced
Lakers get great player who fits a huge need without giving up anything substantial.
Grizzles send off said great player without attempting to get a better offer.
Assuming no other decent offers were coming in (hard to believe)….why give a conference rival a gift like that? Why not just wait until the off season? Pau wasn’t going to be a FA.
It’s hard to believe they did it just to save money. And it’s even harder to believe now that they acquired Z-Bo and his terrible contract.
You won.
by Roybot on Nov 11, 2009 1:41 AM PST
And they got their first round pick back from Washington from the Navarro trade by trading them Crittenton
That they proceeded to draft Thabeet can’t be blamed on the trade. And they saved a ton of cap space with the expirings of McKie and Kwame. And tanked enough to draft Mayo.
Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?
Of course you could construct it that instead of paying Pau Gasol they are now paying Z-Bo and Marc Gasol
Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?
Yeah, they trade away Gasol and then end up with Z-Bo 2 seasons later
That’s bad long term planning.
You won.
by Roybot on Nov 11, 2009 1:41 AM PST
Marc Gasol disagrees
Looks like a good trade for both teams to me. The Lakers were going to be awesome regardless of which Gasol was in their front line. Plus Memphis got a couple draft picks.

Not anymore. Last year he was leading all player in points produced in those situations according to 82games.

Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?
But he is UNSTOPPABLE!!!!!

Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?
yeah, that's what I was remembering
of course he’s gonna get enough shots in clutch situations to have a good point total, but he doesn’t hit them as often as people think, especially game winners. Does anyone know where you can look up stats on game winning attempts?
You won.

Seriously though, this isn't a Laker blog
There’s a whole blog of people who’d like to talk about Kobe.
I give you the benefit of the doubt that you’re not intentionally trying to rile people up, because that’s dangerously close to troll territory, and I’ve never considered you a troll.
i don't care if it's not a laker blog.
we can talk about ANY players. i’m sure if it weren’t kobe i wasn’t talking about it’d be just fine.

That’s exactly correct. There are other places to talk about Kobe who’d love to discuss him.
Technically, people would react similarly if you were talking about LBJ, KD, and a number of other playes too.
Point still applies though.
i don't think people would have nearly the problem if she was talking about
another player. Kobe just hits the Bedge crowd wrong, and that’s fine. but I think if someone was on here and would say every once in a while they really liked Dwight Howard or something, they wouldn’t get as much flack.

There's certainly something to be said for knowing your audience.
This isn’t really the place to repeatedly heap praise upon a small subset of players that are disliked. Off the top of my head:
- Kobe
- Shaq
- LBJ
- KG
- KD
There are other sites available where they love to talk about those players.
I think we’re okay with people talking good about Durant. He is a great player at what he is good at.

by DrivetheLane on Dec 16, 2009 8:45 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Click the date/time, which is a link. At that point, the web address at the top of the browser has added a pound sign and some numbers to the end of the address. Highlight the whole address, and make it into a link. For example, here’s a link to Magnum’s “kids today” comment below.
If you’re linking to a comment in the same post, do not choose to open it in a new window. It will simply move you to the post on the same page, and Z and C will still work.
To save time, you can right click the date, and choose "copy link location" in Firefox.
Then use that for the link.
ah. thanks for the info.

I don't understand this at all.
What’s anti about it? Those gingers are lucky to have Santa’s love.

Sensitive to light
I am guessing the only thing worse than a ginger is a British ginger. Either way, when they get all covered in freckles, I feel itchy just looking at them.
At least that article indicates that the Commission for Racial Equality feels that “gingerism” is “not something for us”. That sum it all up nicely.

I hated when so many teams had "cartoony" jerseys
The Hawks, Sonics, Raptors, Grizzlies, Rockets, who else…
They were awful then and awful now.

In practice, or on the court?
I’m still stuck with Thomas not coming back, should have picked up Speights
Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?
still not sure why he was dropped, but cool!
BRP also dropped Rudolfo, weeee we have a Blazer.
get well soon, big guy.
#52
Idol and Galactic are Spinner Tops, right?
They dropped Michael Redd as well…
They love just giving away fantasy players.
#52
they just dropped someone that was promptly picked up, forgot who it was.
get well soon, big guy.

'Tis the season for GIVING, Ebenezer Mortimer!!
You are more selfish than Brandon Roy!!
"oh dear god. Please be more irresponsible". - Claire
the team was weak in threes and steals, so Rudy should be golden when he gets back. Speights, Rudy, and hopefully T-Mac will boost the raw point total.
boom.
get well soon, big guy.

bahaha shoulda done it, I was talking it over with Tim and I was hoping that no one would swoop in.
get well soon, big guy.

I had planned it, but not as soon as you
Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?
I dreamt tonight I was in a hospital/rehab center, and one morning we learnt Roybot was there and had died over night. Sad.
First BEdger to die in my dreams ;)
Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?
I'm sorry. Just one of the other patients said one morning "Roybot" had died last night and we were all devastated.
Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?
One source said teams including Portland, Miami and Cleveland were hoping that McGrady’s tenure in Houston would end with a buyout, and he would be free to sign with the team of his choice provided he cleared waivers by March 1.
uh yeah, that ain’t happening.
#52
That was dumb
And even though ESPN agreed he traveled, 2 seconds later they say we underrate how good he is.
Yeesh.
#52
by the way, this brings up a pet peeve of mine relating to Mike Barrett and his “travels with the ball, gets away with it” call.
Isn’t that redundant? I’m pretty sure that traveling implies that you already are in possession of the ball. Sounds silly.

Cab
Mike Barrett sucks. The end.

I instantly said it looked like 4 steps, at least 3 but I didn't saw another replay
Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?
@AndrewMBogut: If I am completely honest about certain things that pertain to tonight’s events, someone will steal $$ from me.
Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?
honestly as many times as i read that i still don't know what he means by that

The league fines players if they complain about the officiating
Bogut probably thinks it was a stupid call going in Kobe’s favor ;)

yeah superstar call for sure

Kobe travelled and barreled over a clearly set defender
but was rewarded an and 1. He states the obvious, he gets fined…

yeah but doesn't do no good complaining after the game
by portlandgiirl91 on Dec 17, 2009 3:17 AM PST up reply actions
it was a horrible call, why can't he say it?
if he complains during the game he gets a technical, which at that moment of the game is even worse than a fine.
he does = gets fined. Can’t the NBA or the refs accept criticism? I don’t support this whole “shut up or we’ll hit you in the wallet” method.
i definitely agree
although it’s like just play ball n don’t complain cuz ain’t nuttin u gunna be able to do. but that’s also pocket change to em too.

How is Amare looking this year?
I see his scoring is down, which I didn’t expect because they are “back” to running and he should be healthy.

We watched the Orlando game, there he got some good rebounds including a major offensive one that he dunked in with 1 step

Scott Schroeder of Ridiculous Upside (and a real d-league exec) supports that the Blazers pick up Benson or Jones

Advice: The reigning Defensive Player of the Year proved why he earned that title, setting a new season high in blocked shots. Some of Howard’s swats went so far, so fast that teammates started to ask their center to catch the ball or tap it in-bounds. Howard said he’s working on that but, he admits, big-time rejections are much more fun.
smh Dwight, smh.

Ridiculous Upside really likes Tolliver. They had him ranked #2 to receive a call-up this season yesterday
Anthony Tolliver has got to be the next person to get a call-up (Note: If the NBA keeps going the Jonathan Bender route, replace AT with Chocolate Thunder Darryl Dawkins). The 6’9" Tolliver continued to be a sniper, hitting 6-of-10 from beyond the arc to finish with 28 points on the day. He picked up seven boards as well, but that was kind of negated by his five turnovers (which are more a result of the Idaho offense than anything). He can play inside and outside on offense, does the little things on defense and generally seems to care – which isn’t, unfortunately, a given in the D-League.
Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?

I wish there was something I could do to make you smile again
I said I appreciate that and would you please trade Miller, mayne
I can suggest about fifty ways
KP said why don’t we both just sleep on it tonight
And I believe in the morning you’ll begin to see the light
And then KP kissed me and I realized Nate probably was right
