I LOVE THRILLA!

He was absolutely the MVP tonight.

Blake hit two nice shots

Which in the time he plays is crucial. If he hits it works.

Miller got 29 minutes

going 2-10 in those 29 minutes doesn’t make you “missed” when you aren’t on the court

by blacknoiseNW on Dec 15, 2009 9:52 PM PST up reply actions

Bayless and Roy

Take care of everything Miller has to offer. Blake can hit that open 3 (hopefully), and he knows spacing, so I think Miller is the odd man out right now.
Trade bait?
Pops is having “fit” issues with a certain rookie PF we fans coveted. Miller isn’t a good piece for them right now, but an injury to Parker or Hill and that deal might get done. Or I could be dreaming (most probably).

He has an ankle contusion

Its what kept him out vs. Miami, painful but not surgery. Its a bad bruise basically, basketball equivalent of turf toe.

Wow

Roy with 25pts. 10 assists, and 5 rebs while shooting 50%. GREAT game by the leader.

My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

It's why we drafted him

I say let it play out- it’s set up for Bayless to be a starter as soon as next year, but for sure the year after. All it’ll take is some more Roy lovin’ in interviews and he’s set.

by TheThinWhiteDuke on Dec 15, 2009 10:52 PM PST up reply actions

That's what we need from him every night to have a chance.

The stats are nice

But what we need is him going to the hoop, the way he did tonight. I’ll take whatever stats we get if he does that.

by TheThinWhiteDuke on Dec 15, 2009 10:53 PM PST up reply actions

Nice win by the Blazers.

Solid effort in the 4th. Przybilla is the MVP.

Also, the other Blazer personalities need his energy. His tenacity is a perfect yang to the laid back cool of Roy and the confidence bordering on nonchalance of LMA.

I can't remember any other games that Przybilla means so much to us

tonight his +/- is whopping +27 !!!!!

it’s crazy number considering we won by only 7 and was down by around double digits for a long stretch.

next is Roy’s +12 and no other guys had more than +6

As awful as that is

He was playing out of position at the 5.

Still on the Rex bandwagon.

by dan_the_man on Dec 15, 2009 9:41 PM PST up reply actions

It ain't Howard's fault

He is not a 5 even when a youngster, and because of injuries he has to play it, and he will usually fail at it because he is not an interior defender or rebounder. And without a Joel or Oden down low on defense, we’ll always do bad unless the other team just isn’t attacking and shooting bad shots.

I can’t blame Howard, it’s just what it is now because of injuries.

Everybody is loving Bayless right now.

Which deserves for playing well, but it seems to be lost that the starts to both halfs are what gave us the chance to win this game. Although his stat line doesn’t look good, it was obvious we were a much better starting unit with Miller being the floor general.

I say he is a SG/wing as well

And that’s fine, it isn’t an insult. He’s too Wade-ish to be a PG.

#52

by Mortimer on Dec 15, 2009 9:46 PM PST up reply actions

I think he should exist with Evans perfectly.

Evans is a great spot up shooter. Should work a lot like Billups and Rip.

by Nick Van Excellent on Dec 15, 2009 9:49 PM PST up reply actions

They either have to put Sergio/Udrih with them for more ball movement a la Nate, or Green/Garcia to have a true 3.

It’s not perfect, but I think they can make it work well enough to win a lot of games at home and a number on the road.

Then I would try to make that rumored move for Okafor and ship Hawes and expirings out. I don’t see a big future for that guy. I just don’t.

Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?

by Norsktroll on Dec 15, 2009 9:54 PM PST up reply actions

I'm pretty sure that's the only time

that playing Sergio has been referenced as something “a la Nate”.

#52

by Royster on Dec 15, 2009 9:56 PM PST up reply actions

Sell high on Hawes while he is a 7 footer with a lot of potential on a rookie deal

And not a 7 footer who doesn’t rebound, play strong interior defense, and jacks 3s.

#52

by Mortimer on Dec 15, 2009 9:57 PM PST up reply actions

He is a skilled big, but Kings fans keep saying things like “he needs to add 20 pounds”. Even if he can, then he’s not the same player. At the moment he looks like the next Brad Miller at best, and Miller rebounded very well in his prime.

Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?

by Norsktroll on Dec 15, 2009 9:59 PM PST up reply actions

He'd be better as a PF

But even then, he’s just sorta soft… and on this particular Kings team, their PF spot is filled very nicely by J-Down Thompson.

They could get a lot by moving Hawes, I bet.

#52

by Mortimer on Dec 15, 2009 10:02 PM PST up reply actions

Admittedly, there are worse problems to have

I’d like to welcome StR into a decade of whether their elite wing should be playing the PG or not. We can commiserate with them and offer them counseling based on our experience here.

Dang

*a decade of ARGUING whether their elite wing should be playing the PG.

#52

by Royster on Dec 15, 2009 9:57 PM PST up reply actions

At this point I don't think it matters.

Maybe in a couple years the Kings get tired of Evans at the 1, but right now it’s not like their winning a championship or anything. It works well enough right now.

Get a bunch of good players and figure it out later.

by Nick Van Excellent on Dec 15, 2009 9:55 PM PST up reply actions

Please explain why you don't think he's a PG...

I believe such a notion is a media created illusion without strong factual basis. Geoff Petrie, Paul Westphal and John Calipari know a whole lot more about basketball than I and they have all said Evans is predominantly a point on offense with the physical ability to defend the 1, 2, and occasionally the 3.

If you’re interested, please read this post from Tom Ziller at STR addressing such and whether Martin and Evans can co-exist.

by sroufe on Dec 16, 2009 12:06 AM PST up reply actions

Sorry,

not trying to be argumentative, just trying to add to your discussion…;)

Thought Roy was incredibly tonight, Webster showed some nice flashes of promise, and Bayless is dynamite with the ball in his hands…

by sroufe on Dec 16, 2009 12:11 AM PST up reply actions

I'll take a shot at this.

It’s really the same reason why we say Roy is a combo guard while someone like Dre Miller is a pure point. It really is how they see the floor and how they decide to attack the opposing D. Guys like Roy, Derek Rose, and Evans, the main emphasis for them is to probe the defense and score. When they turn the corner or get past a guy, they only see the conical area between them and the basket. Given such, they can make the passes around such area if a defender comes to help. In a football analogy, they are more like a RB.

Meanwhile, PGs actively look to exploit the defense as a whole and seek out the imbalance on the floor. They see more of the floor and has the ability to make all the passes and get others involved. Now, a pure point is more likely to attack the opposing defense through creating and passing to others as opposed to scoring points that are more likely to attack themselves. Generally, a pure point is more valued by purists but scoring points have been more abundant over last decade or so. To use the football analogy again, he’s the QB.

General guideline to determine if a player is a PG or not (at least for me) is following: does he see the most or all of the court well? Can he make all the passes? Does he have good enough handles to break presses? Is his A/TO above 2.0? Can he get the ball to where his teammates like it at the right time? Can he read the defense as a whole and react accordingly? I admit, it’s more of a subjective measure than a clear statistical measure, but PG by its nature is the most subjective position out of everyone the floor.

Based on what I saw out of Memphis and couple games as a King, Evans is likely a combo guard because he has trouble seeing the whole floor and reading and reacting to D. I’m also not confident that he can make all the passes. For similar (albeit slightly different deficiencies) reasons, Roy and Bayless is also a combo guard while Rose is a combo guard that looks like he can become a scoring PG. A combo guard like Evans and a straight 2 like Martin can work together, but it’ll likely need an extended adjustment period due to their high usage rate. Also, to be successful as a team, Kings would likely have to field some low-usage rate players along side Evans and Martin. A play-making 3 should be helpful as well since you have to worry about the guards not involving the rest of the team on offense and ball movement when you run a combo guard and a SG.

52 + 88 = 140% better team.

by xedubx on Dec 16, 2009 2:14 AM PST up reply actions

Also, the system is important in PG's role as well.

In Calipari’s system, someone like Evans is perfectly fine since his system is based on trapping defense triggering offense, spreading the floor, and utilizing superior quickness. He’d also be fine in a triangle offense, where the responsibilities of balancing the floor and passing is a distributed task. Kings have traditionally ran more of a Princeton offense, (unless it changed under Westphal) so Evans should be fine as well.

52 + 88 = 140% better team.

Casspi wanted to play immediately. So even if Casspi might be a bit more "ready" that's not what we were looking for.

Having seen Nic play him, I’m pretty confident to say that at that time Nic was > Casspi, and that was before he made the jump in his game that he showed later in the season and during the Eurobasket.

Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?

Casspi is tough and shoots 3s

But Claver looks like the whole deal, and he’s got some more size at the 3 over Casspi. Doesn’t mean I wouldn’t have loved to have Casspi (even at the time), but Claver is going to be the back-up 3/4 for years to come (sorry Martell).

We went behind in the second

by Timmay! on Dec 15, 2009 9:44 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, the second one

Rice thought was objectionable, but it looked pretty legit. Joel moved his right foot and caught Casspi with his hip. Of course, Rice was still ranting about Casspi diving on a previous call, so it carried over.

Martin is a nice player and a great guy to have a your 2nd or 3rd best player. Evans is a potential franchise cornerstone.

I don’t think that they will have any trouble playing together. Martin has a way of quietly getting his on offense while not needing to dominate the ball. Last night, for example, he would have been a huge option for the KIngs when the Blazers turned their focus to shutting down Evans late in the game.

Saw the game from section 301 tonight. Ugly game. great win. I think it was a must win, really.

Joel gets the game ball. When he sat in the second quarter, that’s when the Kings feasted on our missing interior defense. We couldn’t buy a rebound, and they were just getting EASY buckets. When Joel was allowed to stay in the game he really controlled the middle well.

Lamarcus had a poor first half but an inspiring second. 9 boards in the second half after just 1 in the first. He also missed very few shots after the break. Hope he can continue this good play. Hawes is a better defender this year it appeared. He’s good about denying his man the post and keeping a body on him. LMA did just fine, though.

Brandon was Brandon again, thank god. He looked more comfortable with Bayless tonight than Dre. 10 assists is awesome.

BAAAAAYYYLESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!

Blake made 2 big shots. Good for him. He didn’t really do much else. I hope he thrives on the bench.

Does anyone else think we should at least TRY a big line-up with Dante at the 3?

It would have to be match-up dependent, but I think he could do it vs bigger 3’s.

by dario argento on Dec 15, 2009 10:39 PM PST reply actions

Well, Dante doesn't play very "big" right now

so I’m not sure how much of an advantage we’d gain there. With the right matchup he can probably soak up some minutes there, but I’m not sure how much upside there is to him at that position right now.

by Royster on Dec 15, 2009 10:41 PM PST up reply actions

Even without a quick sf on the opposing team

He’d end up guarding pgs and sgs a lot. It would be hard to watch. I like Dante a lot, but the kid doesn’t seem very quick.

Still on the Rex bandwagon.

by dan_the_man on Dec 15, 2009 10:41 PM PST up reply actions

Hmm, he tries for them definitely

But I just don’t think he’s a natural rebounder. Martell has grabbed some big ones in traffic as well.

I like Dante, I just don’t think he offers as much at the SF spot as Martell does. And they have similar size as well.

Dante is definitely less of a spazz who makes mistakes like Martell is, though.

#52

by Mortimer on Dec 15, 2009 10:49 PM PST up reply actions

He does try to hit the boards..

It’s really his size that is limiting him. Hard to block out 6’10" 250lb guys when you are Dante. Filling out a bit more should help him, since his most effective position is and will be at 4.

52 + 88 = 140% better team.

by xedubx on Dec 15, 2009 10:52 PM PST up reply actions

Martell does love to rip down some big rebounds

when he gets the chance. I completely agree, though, Dante, while looking okay in stretches is still only slightly better than Marty on one of his very worst days. 10 times out of 10, I’d rather have Martell playing the 3 than Dante.

What a "I told you so" moment for many fans

Bayless, after a slightly shaky start, had much the effect that so many B.E. denizens have been insisting he would have for the last 2+ weeks.

The really great thing is that his energy seemed to spread to his teammates. That’s as fired up as I’ve seen Pryzbilla this year.

I watched the point guards interact and it was all good teammate stuff out there: Bayless hugging Blake after a big 3, Miller quickly off the bench with high 5’s in every timeout.

I felt better about the Blazers tonight than I have since Chicago, at least.

by Corwin71 on Dec 15, 2009 10:42 PM PST reply actions

Me too. I agree completely about his energy spreading. He came in and fired everyone up.

Right now he is the only player outside of Roy that consistently puts pressure on the D.

Not to nay say or anything

But Bayless and Roy didn’t exactly play the 1 and 2 together at the end of the game. Blake was most definitely in the game. Meaning Roy was playing the 3, Bayless was playing the 2, and Blake was playing the 1.

Bayless plays well when he is at the 2… this is no surprise. The problem is, when Rudy/Outlaw/Batum come back. (The future, our window, etc.) There isn’t going to be free time at the 2 or 3. Bayless has to be able to play the point guard position with success on this time.

As of now. Roy doesn’t fit with Miller (according to everyone and their moms.) Bayless is a younger version of Miller without the passing ability. When Bayless is actually playing the 1, why do we think Roy will play with him any better?

by BoatRockinBatum on Dec 15, 2009 11:08 PM PST reply actions

Bayless played point; Roy played point; Blake played some point

“Point” is an action – not a condition. Bayless made some excellent decisions with the basketball that directly contributed to easier scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates – and he did it while playing off Roy very effectively.

by blacknoiseNW on Dec 15, 2009 11:11 PM PST up reply actions

With Blake in the game or not?

Because if we trade Blake, he won’t be.

Let’s look back a couple of weeks.

“Miller can’t play with Roy”
::Insert 3 guard starting lineup::
::Blazers absolutely wreck horrible teams::
“OMG Miller at 2 and Roy at 3 is Godlike”
::Insert real teams::
“Trade Miller!”

by BoatRockinBatum on Dec 15, 2009 11:13 PM PST up reply actions

I've tried to be positive about Miller (maybe without a lot of effort in that "try")

but Bayless needs to be the starting PG over both. Blake has his uses if he can shoot open shots in rhythm with the offense. Ditto Miller. Neither are very dynamic at this point in their careers.

Enter Bayless. Dynamo incarnate.

by blacknoiseNW on Dec 15, 2009 11:16 PM PST up reply actions

BoatRock

is being needlessly negative here, but one good quarter against one of the 5 worst defensive teams in the league isn’t exactly definitive proof. We were something like -13 with Bayless in the game in the first half.

He played well late tonight, but as has been stated above, Joel was the clear difference maker tonight.

#52

by Royster on Dec 15, 2009 11:18 PM PST up reply actions

Needlessly negative?

Or just looking rationally at the game when everyone has decided that a good 3 minute stretch means our savior has arrived?

by BoatRockinBatum on Dec 15, 2009 11:19 PM PST up reply actions

You seem stuck on last season like a few other dead enders around here.

Bayless has as high of Assist % as Blake while having the ball in his hands far less. His TO% is much lower than Blake. The whole “Bayless will never be a PG” meme is really, really getting old.

The kid is young, raw, and inexperienced. He is going to make a lot of mistakes on both ends, but he is improving rapidly and has a ton of talent.

I don’t understand why folks are willing to live with mistakes from Batum and Oden but seem unwilling to cut Bayless any slack. What gives?

by upper left corner on Dec 15, 2009 11:32 PM PST up reply actions

Right now Bayless just needs to play.

It doesn’t matter if he is the primary PG or not. He needs to play significant minutes to get confidence and a better feel of game situations. He started tonight with a bad pass turn-over, committing a foul on a 3 point shot, etc. But he got better the longer he played. By the end of the game he was making good decisions and looked confident. He just needs to keep that up for a few weeks and he will be ready to step in and play extended minutes with Roy (as a PG/SG pair) after The Trade.

by BlazerFanSince1970 on Dec 15, 2009 11:20 PM PST up reply actions

I agree he needs to get minutes

But he also needs to learn a position that he can find 30+ mpg at. Right now SG works because we have 1SG and 2SFs injured. Soon it won’t.

by BoatRockinBatum on Dec 15, 2009 11:21 PM PST up reply actions

One step at a time. First he needs to get some confidence and get a better feel of the game.

When he gets his shot down, plays smarter defense, and makes good decisions as a SG, he can then get regular minutes sharing the PG responsibilities with Roy. He’ll probably never be a true PG, but it won’t matter. When he can play with Roy (without another PG, i.e. without a 3-guard lineup) he’ll be able to get all the minutes he could possibly want.

anyone else curious how this woulda gone with Rudy available?

Most likely, he woulda been in there for Bayless – not Blake/Miller. I’m very curious how he would have done against Evans. More length than Bayless, but less strength. I think the strength and leverage bothered Evans more than length did, tonight.

by blacknoiseNW on Dec 15, 2009 11:13 PM PST reply actions

Really though

19/7/3 vs his 20/5/5 season averages. 7/9 shooting. 2 steals and 1 turnover?
