Play Bayless vs. Blake as Bayless. Jam in Blake’s face about ten times. I feel much better now and I think you will too.

Canzano's claiming Denver really really wants Joel

I’ll believe it when I see it. I don’t know whom they’d have that we’d want though, especially since Joel=our only center now.

I could see why the Denver Nuggets would use Joel Przybilla strictly as a backup for Nenê; though, ...

it’d have to be a multi-team deal — as my guess is the Nuggets would send out J.R. Smith, who George Karl has had problems with in the past and would be a horrid fit in Portland — while a young, defensive-minded center comes back to the Trail Blazers somehow.

With that said, trading Przybilla would be an extremely short-sighted move unless the Trail Blazers got, oh, Marcin Gortat — while Orlando got Smith using its trade exception from the Hedo Turkoglu sign-and-trade deal — back in return for him. Even then, however, I wouldn’t want to part with Przybilla, who’s still a premium post defender. I’m not entirely sold on Gortat, either.

Dear Paul Allen:

Fire Kevin Pritchard & hire Dennis Lindsey.
Fire Nate McMillan & hire Jeff Van Gundy.

Sincerely,

Winston Churchill was famous for his particularly large vocabulary. He used about 60,000 words in his writing but most educated native speakers use a working vocabulary of about 25,000 words.

For all the discussion about coaching changes, etc.

Most of all I hope the organization comes to an understanding of how to treat the international guys. I get the feeling that there was a big fat disconnect between the French/Spanish teams and the Blazers when it comes to injuries, etc.

by Corvid on Dec 14, 2009 12:07 AM PST up reply actions

We may always have that problem with our Euro dudes

Playing for the national team is always important, which is usually fine, but it seems like they play every dang summer, unlike our Yankee guys who don’t do it yearly.

If Batum and Rudy didn’t already join their teams with nagging injuries that they made worse, we might be happy that they didn’t have any off-season rust… but yeah, some sort of balance has to be found because our Blazers are getting screwed by them playing through injuries on their national teams.

#52

by Mortimer on Dec 14, 2009 12:13 AM PST up reply actions

Rudy missed no time preparing for the Eurobasket due to back problems. He had a small hamstring tear that really should be unrelated which sidelined him for a week or so. No unusual pain, no problems. Played through the entire tournament.

Nic is a different story. That they ordered him home with what the French doctors deemed a minor injury seemed puny at that time. That they didn’t see what was really going on and the Blazers then happily sent him back was the big fat FAIL.

Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?

Rudy mighta' missed no time

But if he was still hurting from the Ariza hit, shouldn’t he have rested his back or sought other treatments?

He never complained about back pain/leg pain until recently. Nic always said his shoulder was sore. And I pretty much think all pro athletes have minor pain all the time. Pain killers aren’t on doping lists for a reason.

by Norsktroll on Dec 14, 2009 12:44 AM PST up reply actions

E.g. Rudy and LaMarcus are always wearing shooting sleeves over their elbows. Jerryd has started that now too. I wouldn’t have been surprised if Rudy had said he needed surgery on the elbow.

Back injuries are funny

The pain comes and goes. You think everything’s cured, then WHAM.

He still was moving like his back hurt at the beginning of the season. Maybe during the summer too? Can’t really remember. When it comes to back stuff, it’s really easy to get conflicting advice.

by Corvid on Dec 14, 2009 12:46 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah, that's the "great" thing about the injury

And while I hoped it wouldn’t be something that may limit him in the long run, when he fell and was writhing in pain, I thought it could be REAL bad.

But, it ain’t an injury that’ll affect him long term, and he’ll have enough time to get ready for next season.

The injury sure isn’t a good thing, but as long as it’s only development time lost, he’ll be okay.

you are the quintessential realistic optimist.

I dunno, Mort. The two Blazers I most like watching are both hurt. I want to bang my head into a wall because I feel so bad for Greg.

The thing that hurts second to Oden is watching this team play. Watching Steve Blake. Watching Brandon not be Brandon.

I was glad to see him make a cameo in the fourth quarter. Made me really smile. Most of all, I really just miss Brandon and wish that he was good again. I wish he had his preternatural ability to get to the rim, his soft touch at the basket.

Don't get me wrong

This season SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKS.

Good lord this season sucks. In every way, shape, and form. The one positive broke his stupid patella.

But all I’m saying is, what we loved about this team before is still there, and will be there again. It’s likely going to be a lost season. Steve Blake should not be playing for a team that is primed for a lost season.

If Brandon gets going again, we can still be a good team this year, but not much better than decent-good. It’s just one of those years, but thankfully we’re really young and can easily bounce back.

This many injuries to nearly everyone on the roster… no one can overcome what we’re going through. It’s just a poop year.

this season has sucked.

the one thing that is just killing me is that we aren’t playing Bayless. This is the time to see what we have. Heck, Westbrook’s statistics are still not as good as Bayless’ offensively. Bayless is a better shooter and scorer, turns it over less, but dishes out fewer assists. Give the kid time.

Give me some hope to hang onto… please Nate…

"If ya feel good about Oden, you should feel good about the future"

I do feel good about a healthy Oden. He could still be an All-Star from 24-3×. However I’m not sure if I we should feel a healthy Oden in our future. I’m a bit in the “we have to be able to win big games even without him – if he’s there great if not others need to carry us” camp at the moment. Step 1: Get a reliable second scorer next to Roy (LaMarcus or someone else). Step 2: Have offensive sets that not every high school coach and his team can defend. Step 3: Play inspired.

Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?

by Norsktroll on Dec 14, 2009 12:03 AM PST up reply actions

While it is obviously a concern

I still gotta say his injuries have been of the bad luck variety, like Nene went through for a while.

And bad luck will run out.

I plan for having Oden; all in. Until it is proven that his body can’t do it. Going halfway won’t accomplish anything good or bad, and ya won’t be able to replace Oden anyways. Not with trying to still be good without Oden.

I didn't notice

Durant is and always will be an amazing scorer who rebounds well for a SF, but he’s STILL a guy who has more turnovers than assists and if you run your offense through a dude like that, it won’t work long term.

Never has except with the Rick Barry exception, and won’t likely work in the future.

Playmaking is why Roy was better than Durant, not raw overall stats. Roy is in a big time slump, though.

#52

by Cablinasian on Dec 14, 2009 12:26 AM PST up reply actions

wah? not really....link or it didn't happen ;p

here’s what I remember saying…

It seemed like we were getting better all year long, but as Cablin mentioned, we were still getting torched by quick point guards.

as far as the houston series went, it was a nightmare having to deal with Yao, as we ended up doubling and that left Houston perimeter shooters even MORE open.

Ultimately, I’d like to see

1) Lamarcus playing better help defense
2) Nic continuing his growth into a lock-down defender
3) Joel keep barking out orders on defense
4) Roy take more of a leadership role on defense like he does on offense, especially when Przy isn’t on the court
5) Oden to not foul away from the ball as much. He needs to pick his spots better.
6) Have Rudy add to his quick hands that get in the passing lanes some quick feet. Less "herding" of players into the middle and more staying in front of them.
7) Outlaw work his butt off on defense 100% of the time instead of playing just enough to not end up on the pine.
8) Bayless to tone down his aggressiveness just a hair. He seems to pick up too many fouls while attacking other PGs when he’s in.

As for Blake, I’m really not sure how much he’s going to change. He’s an older guy and I think his defense is just what you’re always going to see from him. If you don’t like it, find someone else. Steve will always be Steve. WYSIWYG

Sergio has lackluster defense, and after hearing Quick/reading online articles from Marca (the Spanish website he talks to), I honestly don’t know if he’s even going to be around.

For Webster, it will be nice just to have him back in uniform. Hard to evaluate what he can do when we haven’t seen him play in so long.

As far as team defense goes, we basically just need to see more execution. I think Nate and the coaching staff comes up with relatively solid defensive schemes, although it does seem we rely on our zone too much on the road. I could be crazy, but it seems like we pull it out and the home team shoots the lights out on us. There’s nothing that gets the home crowd pumping like a three pointer, as we all know from seeing Rudy at the Rose Garden. You can’t play a loose zone on the road and give up those threes. I’d like to see Nate make the guys play man as much as possible and keep those shooters covered.

Overall though, I liked what I saw this season. I’m trusting that our team will continue its development and we’ll see even more of a matador-style D next year.

acta est fabula plaudite — Thanks for a great season.

I've commented about Tyreke Evans previously, which I've stated ...

that he should be a wing player next to Kevin Martin instead of being forced into the unnatural role of a point guard. Evans is so long and athletic that he’d be perfect as a slashing 3, but the Sacramento Kings have an overabundance of wings and combo forwards.

Also, I made my thoughts known on how Spencer Hawes is garbage both defensively and regarding offensive efficiency. For Sacramento to improve further, it’ll need to acquire a decent post defender — such as Emeka Okafor, who was rumored to go there earlier this season — to provide stability inside.

Honestly I think he is improving step by step, but his team won't be more than a low playoff team unless Petrie can spend on a great big guy or wins one in the lottery

Points: 20 → 25 → 28
TRB: 4.4 → 6.5 → 7.2
As: 2.4 → 2.8 → 3.2
To: 2.9 → 3.0 → 3.4
Stl: 1 → 1.3 → 1.7
WS: 2.3 → 7.9 → 3.6 (already)
PER: 15.8 → 20.8 → 24.7

I had the statistical post about his comparisons, but at this age you are really starting to run out of them.
Anthony is still close (age 21, 3rd season). So is Bosh and Garnett. But that’s it. For “bustish” players like Marbury and Ricky Davis you have to look at PERs below 21 at that age.

He’ll be a very special talent, so unless Greg is super-healthy in the future we will be considered to have picked the wrong guy. There is no way around that. Greg can probably only become great for us, but not better than him.

To me, Durant will always have the better “brute” and over time maybe even advanced stats than Oden and Greg will only be an impact player if he can stay healthy. Which he has yet to prove. That’s about it. That a healthy Greg is a great fit for our team is on an entirely different page. Since seeing Durant featured in TIME I always thought both would be great players and didn’t believe in the theory one must be a bust so the other can be great. But there is little denying that Durant is delivering on his side of the deal. Look at the players we are comparing him to. Even the worse performers in that category are star names: McGrady, Melo, Gervin, …

Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?

by Norsktroll on Dec 14, 2009 12:27 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah, it's not about one being good and the other not

Both are good players, but I will always argue that a dominant two way physically imposing center is better than a smooth jump shooting amazing scoring perimeter player. Always.

Durant is amazing at what he does but history suggests that players who are great in his way do not win titles. The ways Oden is great, do.

#52

by Mortimer on Dec 14, 2009 12:30 AM PST up reply actions

Durant is in his third season… the biggest jumps occur in the first three years.

Why would his advanced stats continue to grow at a faster rate than Oden even though he is obviously more of a finished product?

raw, raw Oden’s WARP in 24 minutes per game was already higher than Durant’s in gonzo minutes per game. Oden will have the advanced stat categories.

#52

by Cablinasian on Dec 14, 2009 12:30 AM PST up reply actions

Oden also had a big time PER

Which, as we all know, is mainly an offensive stat.

His defense isn’t even accounted for, truly, with PER.

#52

by Mortimer on Dec 14, 2009 12:31 AM PST up reply actions

a guy that gets defensive stats (as Oden does with blocks) gets credit for D

Not fully because of all the shots he challenges— but the guys PER really miss on are the Bowen’s and Battiers who don’t load up on blocks and steals.

#52

by jksnake99 on Dec 14, 2009 1:26 AM PST up reply actions

but they clue PER into the fact that he's a defensive beast

I don’t think you can really say PER underrates Oden much. Maybe a bit (indeed, David Berri would tell you it does— Oden was #7 in the league in WP48), but not by much.

#52

by jksnake99 on Dec 14, 2009 1:31 AM PST up reply actions

I dunno if it underrates him since he had a great PER

But it isn’t set up to really reflect defensive impact, as it’s largely an offensive stat. At least from my limited understanding of it.

He did great on offense, rebounding, and blocked shots, all efficiently, so he had a great PER, but it can’t reflect how much it made teams shoot outside more, or changed shots, kept guys off the block, etc.

I’m not complaining about it, just pointing out that an offensive player like Durant will be more accurately represented by PER because he accounts for everything he does.

#52

by Mortimer on Dec 14, 2009 1:34 AM PST up reply actions

Whereas I can rightfully compare Greg to players the average even avid NBA follower has never heard of since his minutes and games are low. Only on a per-minute basis his potential gets revealed, but not “realized potential”. That is the sad thing.

Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?

by Norsktroll on Dec 14, 2009 12:31 AM PST up reply actions

If Oden is healthy

He is the right choice. Health concerns was the only thing that prevents him from showing it right now.

There is no way a good scoring perimeter player matters more than a dominant two way center.

If Oden is always injured, especially for the playoffs, then yes— we picked the wrong dude.

And the right dude would then maybe be Al Horford, who plays two ways and scores inside.

We’ve seen further evidence that he can’t incorporate a post up Center, teach his team to run a pick and roll, or defend one, or adjust a PG situation for new personnel, a player being terrible and a player improving.

When option 1 doesn’t work, he’s got no backup plan. We’re running the same stuff as last year with a worse Roy a much worse Blake a new guy in Miller that we are wasting, Bayless rotting on the bench, etc.

Of course silly, I was referencing you with my silliness

While I agree for the most part, a true center would be better than Juwan Howard, I don’t think it is anywhere close to the reason this season is failing.

We are failing because of massive injuries to extremely key players, and that isn’t anywhere close to a lame excuse. We lost our best player to a season ending injury, and he also happened to be a two-way center. THAT is why we have a debacle on our hands… but it’s only a temporary debacle.

You factor in our guard’s inability to integrate Oden, losing our best perimeter defender in Batum, Roy seemingly regressing a bit, Miller starting out very slow and making rookie mistakes, Blake sucking, and we got problems even before the injury but all likely temp problems.

KP coulda’ got more than Dre with RLEC, but it woulda’ been of the VC variety.

Ignoring Kirk Hinrich for one second, how the roster was constructed isn’t the problem unless one feels that the players we rely on are fundamentally physically flawed.

Meh, he's been subtle in his criticism. While as11osu ...

will acknowledge Kevin Pritchard’s recent shortcomings, he doesn’t recognize that the dude has always overvalued his own assets, doesn’t follow in roster balance, lacks synergy with the coaching staff, and is ultraconservative apropos of mid-season trades.

With that noted, KP doesn’t seem capable of ever buidling a championship roster.

the playoffs gave evidence that he wasn't the right man

This has been a crazy strange season

He might not be the right guy, but it becoming clear based off of the playoffs and THIS season is weird to me.

It all depends on who else we can get. I still Blame Roy for not integrating Oden more.

Unless we snag a far superior coach who can reach the players even better than Nate does, I guarantee it won’t help things as much as you’re making it out to be.

JVG aside, of course.

I am 100% convinced there are numerous coaches out there that could improve our defense

and numerous coaches out there that would be more creative on offense.

Ideally, we’d find someone who could do both, or at least a defensive head coach and an offensive lead assistant.

Its just really clear that Nate isn’t a great x’s and o’s guy. He was awesome at motivating our young guys and getting them to play hard. He’s not the guy to take the next step.

If Jonathan Bender can make a full comeback, that would be nice news for Greg's future

Bender’s knees were pretty much shot when he retired. He was always listed with “sore knees” after patella damage, and probably also unreported bone on bone issues.

He’s trying to find a diamond in the rough since he knows he can spend no cap on anyone this year. Without a draft pick, he doesn’t even have an incentive to let the team play poorly. He needs to convince a future big-time free agent that this team can be competitive around said star. Which it currently doesn’t look like at all. He really screwed up the last draft, and while Gallinari is nice it’s not exactly a huge pull either.

As I've said before, Donnie Walsh must get on the ball and dismantle this roster demolition style.
“Right now, Donnie Walsh should be looking to move Eddy Curry and Jared Jeffries for expiring contracts — even if it costs Jordan Hill and Wilson Chandler, who are overrated — and look to add someone overhyped by casual fans like Tracy McGrady as a short-term boon in ticket sales.

Step #1: http://www.realgm.com/src_checktrade.php?tradeid=5308699
Step #2: http://www.realgm.com/src_checktrade.php?tradeid=5308691
Step #3: http://www.realgm.com/src_checktrade.php?tradeid=5308684

1. David Kahn may soon get desperate and drop his patient approach, with a young wing scorer — albeit an inefficient one — like Wilson Chandler filling a major hole.
2. Geoff Petrie could want a young guy with size like Jordan Hill, even if he’s the nothing more than the next Drew Gooden/Chris Wilcox.
3. Daryl Morey may get tired of Tracy McGrady pushing to come back from microfracture surgery, so moving him at all costs — with insurance $ being a big as reason as on-court chemistry — might become a priority like Cabby predicted awhile ago.

Oh, and if New York Knicks CEO James Dolan needs to include cash considerations to sweeten any of those trade proposals — or even if Donnie Walsh must add youngster Toney Douglas to the Eddy Curry/Wilson Chandler for Mark Blount/Brian Cardinal deal to help satisfy David Kahn’s batty point guard fetish — then so be it. Dolan and Walsh must start clearing the books for the summer of 2010, pronto!"

http://www.blazersedge.com/2009/12/4/1185237/around-the-nba-volume-2#26546753

Ugh, I’m just sickened by how Walsh is sitting on his hands. Hell, rather than sign freakin’ Jonathan Bender, he should be working on slashing future salary obligations. Shoot, releasing that moronic malcontent Nate Robinson for insubordination would be more productive than signing Bender.

Spurs ensured with De Colo to always have a French guard for the foreseeable future. Add Tiago Splitter next summer, and that team isn’t even badly set up for a time after Duncan. Give or take a year without making the playoffs.

If he was real, maybe he'd be good

We all know he is just an actor hired to play the part of an elusive “Euro” big man who gets drafted like 5 times each year and never comes to play in the NBA.

I saw him in an Australian soap opera

He’s an actor named Chet Westerly, from just outside Sydney.

Well cast for the role of Tiago Splitter, and a great actor… but just an actor.

I've only caught a couple of games of his team

and what I saw didn’t really impress me. Some good things though, he’s the captain of the team (only 21 years old) and his team is currently tied for 3rd place.

How often do you get snow?

As a naive American, I always thought Madrid was sunny and warm. At least it was sunny and warm when I was there, in August.

Spain does have mountains, even the Sierra Nevada from where you can see Africa ;)

Same on the other side of the ocean in Morocco.

it's sunny and warm from April to November

In winter it gets cold and dry (usually 0-5ºC), but snow is not really common due to Madrid’s altitude. We still get a few days like today, though. It’s a nice contrast.

Can I be a diva for a second and stir up controversy where there should be none?

Did anyone catch Roy leaving the court with 3 seconds still left on the clock? He heads straight for the locker room, no handshakes, no fist bumps, no hugs for Jennings or any of the bucks.

LeBron got roasted when he did that.

yep. Shaking hands after a hard-fought playoff series is a big deal. Shaking hands after a pretty inconsequential game, meh.

get well soon, big guy.

It’s always cool to have good sportsmanship, I’d rather he shake hands. But I am not too worried about Broy in this context. He’s never been a poor sport.
