Well that road trip sucked.

If it weren't for the Indiana Pacers and their lack of an offensive option, the Blazers might have walked away from it without a win.

In case you didn't already see it, Jason Quick is starting to raise a stink.

Im a big fan of comfort food and I had a couple slices of this after the game.

another scorer would definetetly help though.

We are getting nothing from PG and SF. A PG who could score would help, if Roy was willing to play with him of course.

Won’t happen, obviously, so its a moot point.

I say we get Mo Williams next year

after Lebron leaves Cleveland for NYC.

He ain’t perfect, but he might be the best option that Roy can play alongside. A scoring PG who can hit the 3, but can, obviously, play off the ball when needed.

Ok, I know I'm quite late to the party on this one, but I gotta rant

I just played Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare 1

Gotta say, not impressive for a game that was wildly heralded as console game of the year. It’s not because I’m not a first person shooter type of guy cause I play those all the time.

Some talking points:
The graphics are amazing, but nearly all next-gen games have great graphics. It’s not something that makes a game anymore, but it is something that can ruin a game.

The storyline was a standard “oh no, a breakaway state has some nukes!” affair. It wasn’t compelling. The single player was just a generic shooter overall and it doesn’t even have co-op. Call of Duty has always been a slightly odd franchise. You’re not a near-invincible space marine like in Halo, but it’s also not all that tactical either. You’re under a lot of fire, but you can’t lock in behind cover or a wall. There’s no option for peeking or leaning around corners to see if someone is in the next room without exposing yourself.

The campaign is comically short, 6-8 hours tops even if you take your time. My first thought when the credits starting rolling was, “that’s it!?” It didn’t help that I had heard it had an amazing single player with an enthralling storyline. Maybe those people watch too much reality tv.

I liked the friendly AI. They were useful, unlike in many other games. The enemy AI is a different story. Sometimes they were smart, sometimes they were outrageously dumb. At times they would stay behind cover popping out only to shoot or throw a grenade. Other times they would stand in the open or even rush straight at my position like they had no fear of bullets.

Outside of online multi-player, I don’t see this game having any replay value.

You won.

What did you play? Modern Warfare 2, Call of Duty 4, or Modern Warfare 1? Only the first 2 were regarded as great games.

Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?

by Norsktroll on Dec 13, 2009 2:28 AM PST up reply actions

From your description it's probably Call of Duty 4

I liked the storyline on that, if you didn’t like that it gets even more confusing in MWF2. One thing that is a bit dumb with the AI in that one is that you always have to advance to stop new enemies from coming in. Once you pass a kind of invisible wall you have made that sector and can continue to kill the next guys. Sitting around an sniping doesn’t help.

Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?

yes, it took me a while to realize that

Meet our new backup center

http://www.nba.com/dleague/playerfile/index.jsp?player=john_bryant

I’m not sure about him, but he’s currently the best in the d-league (16 points, 13 rebounds, 2 blocks per game). I would rather think KP pulls off something like this and brings in a guy who nobody has heard of from the DL or Europe or a bought-out player closer to the deadline while cutting Mills, than doing any mayor super monster mega trade.

When talking about potential head coaches, I often wonder who they'd bring in as assistants. With Mike ...

Budenholzer, I could see KP having him retain Monty Williams and Joe Prunty. That’d leave a couple of spots open, however, as Dean Demopolous would likely go with Nate McMillan — with their next step hopefully being college, as that game is much better suited for them — and Maurice Lucas would exit the bench into a liaison type role with the organization. Anyway, as it conerns those spots, I could see Budenholzer bring local Pacific Northwesterner Chad Forcier with him, although that’d still leave a slot open for the lead assistant spot. One possibility for that role is the guy on the right in the following picture, who I don’t have much fondness for and I assume that’s also likely the case with y’all in Portland.

The Kings had Bryant in the Summer League

Nothing really stuck out to them about Bryant, and they were looking for depth at the C position at the time. The Kings signed Sean May instead, but he hasn’t worked out either.

Why wouldn’t the Blazers have looked at Rod Benson?

Rod Benson is more of an athletic 5/4 who's a solid help defender and shot blocker, while Portland is ...

more in need of a pure 5 for depth purposes. There’s a few guys in the NBA like Benson — such as Hilton Armstrong, Sean Williams, and Solomon Jones — but they tend to be shoddy backups or benchwarmers who don’t make too much of an impact.

Dwayne Jones is practically a pure center in spite of being a shade under 7'0" tall. The ...

main thing with Dwayne Jones is that he’s a good rebounder, man-to-man interior defender, and weakside help defender, while John Bryant is too slow to rotate quickly enough on help defense and Rod Benson is too undersized to stop opposing bigs in one-on-one matchups.

Regarding current NBA players, Jones is similar to a guy like Josh Boone. Boone, who’s had unusual trouble with offensive efficiency and defensive +/- numbers thus far this season, has still done a solid job regarding TRB% and BLK%. With Jones, I’d bank on somewhat similar results. That, of course, would be fine for a stopgap at the backup center position.

by AK1984 on Dec 13, 2009 6:16 AM PST up reply actions

Sounds reasonable to me

I don’t think Jones would be an upgrade on Kenny Thomas, and that’s probably why the Kings haven’t really gone after any C out there. That, and the 2010 draft is looming with many big man talents.

Hmm, let me slightly adjust the comparison for Dwayne Jones to Josh Boone on ...

offense and Dan Gadzuric on defense. After reading DraftExpress’ recent write-up on Boone from this past summer, it seems he tends to loaf on defense — which I don’t recall notcing from the few times I’ve watched him — and that certainly isn’t the case with Jones. So, yeah, Jones is Boone on offense and Gadzuric on defense, which is fine for a stopgap backup at the 5.

How did our eyes get so red

And this is where I grew up
I think the present owner fixed it up
I never knew we’d ever went without
The second floor is hard for sneaking out

And this is where I went to school
Most of the time had better things to do
Criminal record says I broke in twice
I must have done it half a dozen times

I wonder if it’s too late
Should i go back and try to graduate

Girl of sixteen, whole life ahead of her
Slashed her wrists, bored with life
Didn’t succeed, thank the Lord
For small mercies

Fighting back the tears, mother reads the note again
Sixteen candles burn in her mind
She takes the blame, it’s always the same
She goes down on her knees and prays

I don’t want to start any blasphemous rumours
But I think that God’s got a sick sense of humor
And when I die I expect to find Him laughing
Girl of eighteen, fell in love with everything
Found new life in Jesus Christ
Hit by a car, ended up
On a life support machine

Summer’s day, as she passed away
Birds were singing in the summer sky
Then came the rain, and once again
A tear fell from her mother’s eye

I don’t want to start any blasphemous rumours
But I think that God’s got a sick sense of humor
And when I die I expect to find Him laughing

(Sorry for the long lyrics--but It's American Pie! What do you expect?)
A long, long time ago I can still remember how that music used to make me smile
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And maybe they’d be happy for a while. 1

But February made me shiver
With every paper I delivered,
Bad news on the door step,
I couldn’t take one more step, 2

I can’t remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride 3
But something touched me deep inside,
The day, the music, died. 4
So…

Refrain:
Bye, bye Miss American Pie 5
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry 6
Them good ol’ boys were drinkin’ whiskey ‘n’ rye 7
Singin this will be the day that I die.
This will be the day that I die. 8

Did you write the book of love 9
And do you have faith in God above,
If the bible tells you so. 10
And do you believe in rock ‘n’ roll?
Can music save your mortal soul? 11
And can you teach me how to dance real slow?

Well I know that you’re in love with him
Cuz I saw you dancin’ in the gym. 12
You both kicked off your shoes 13
And I dig those rhythm and blues. 14

I was a lonely teenage bronkin’ buck
With a pink carnation and a pick up truck 15
But I knew I was out of luck,
The day, the music, died.
I started singin…

Refrain

Now for ten years we’ve been on our own 16
And moss grows fat on a rollin stone 17
But that’s not how it used to be,
When the jester sang for the king and queen
In a coat he borrowed from James Dean 18
And a voice that came from you and me. 19

Oh and while the king was looking down,
The jester stole his thorny crown 20
The courtroom was adjourned;
No verdict was returned. 21

And while Lennon read a book on Marx, 22
The quartet practiced in the park 23
And we sang dirges in the dark, 24
The day, the music, died.
We were singin’…

Refrain

Helter Skelter in a summer swelter 25
The birds flew off with a fallout shelter,
Eight miles high and fallin’ fast. 26
It landed foul on the grass. 27
The players tried for a forward pass 28
With the jester on the sidelines in a cast. 29

Now the half-time air was sweet perfume 30
While the sergeants played a marching tune. 31
We all got up to dance
Oh but we never got the chance. 32

As the players tried to take the field
The marching band refused to yield.
Do you recall what was revealed, 33
the day, the music, died?
We started singin’…

Refrain

Oh and there we were all in one place, 34
A generation lost in space
With no time left to start again. 35
So come on, Jack be nimble, Jack be quick. 36
Jack Flash sat on a candle stick 37
Because fire is the devils only friend.38

Oh and as I watched him on the stage,
My hands were clinched in fists of rage,
No angel born in hell
Could break that Satan’s spell. 39

And as the flames climbed high into the night
To light the sacrificial rite
I saw Satan laughing with delight,40
The day, the music, died.
He was singin’…

Refrain

I met a girl who sang the blues 41
And I asked her for some happy news
But she just smiled and turned away. 42
I went down to the sacred store
Where I’d heard the music years before
But the man there said the music wouldn’t play. 43

And in the streets the children screamed, 44
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed. 45
But not a word was spoken,
The church bells all were broken. 46

And the three men I admire most,
The Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost, 47
They caught the last train for the coast, 48
The day, the music, died.
And they were singin’…

Refrain

They were singin’…

Bye, bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
Them good ol’ boys were drinkin’ whiskey ‘n’ rye
Singin’ this will be the day that I die.

ooh jackie, they’ve lost at sometime

don’t try to tell me that you’re not aware
of what you’re doing and that you don’t care
you say it’s easy, just a nat’ral thing
like playing music but you never sing

ooh-hoo, jackie blue
making wishes that never come true
going places where you’ve never been
ooh jackie, you’re going again
(GUITAR SOLO)

ooh-hoo, jackie blue
likes a dream that can never come true
making love is like siftin’ through sand

ooh jackie, it slips through your hand

ev’ry day, in your indigo eyes
I watch the sun set but I don’t see it rise
moonlight and stars in your strawberry wine

you’d take the world but you won’t take the time

ooh-hoo, jackie blue
lives her life from inside of a room
makes you think that her life is a drag
ooh jackie, what fun you have had

ooh jackie, ooh jackie
ooh jackie, ooh jackie
hey, hey, hey, hey

Ugh, there've recently been some inexplicably harebrained, utterly preposterous trade proposals. One ...

has the Portland Trail Blazers targeting Gilbert Arenas — which is utterly ludicrous from all aspects — while the other has a trade wherein Andre Miller returns to the L.A. Clippers and Sebastian Telfair returns to the Portland Trail Blazers, which’ll never happen in a billion years. It seems people are throwing logic out the window, which I blame on a combination of overall NBA ignorance — as many Portland fans seemingly aren’t well-versed on the needs of other teams, although that’s the case in many cities — and the franchise’s dire straits pertaining to this season being a lost cause clouding their minds.

Who, however, am I to judge other people regarding inane trade proposals? True, it’s like the old adage about “the pot calling the kettle black” and whatnot.

Dear Paul Allen:

Fire Kevin Pritchard & hire Dennis Lindsey.
Fire Nate McMillan & hire Jeff Van Gundy.

Things will settle down

But probably not until January, unless the Blazers have a surprising stretch in December.

Expecting a team to contend for the 2nd seed in the west, and watching them likely fall back under .500 will be pretty shocking. Once the expectations get reset, things should hopefully settle down.

by Timmay! on Dec 13, 2009 10:23 AM PST up reply actions

i see it the same way.

by DrivetheLane on Dec 13, 2009 10:28 AM PST up reply actions

I get the frustration with the PG rotation but even with that

this roster isn’t a top level Western Conference team with all the injuries. Would I like to see Bayless and the Inferno get some of Blake and Howard’s minutes for developmental purposes in a somewhat stalled season – of course. But unless we see 4 or 5 miraculous recoveries, this is not a top tier team. I think they can maybe battle for a 7-8, but even that could be tough.

It seems much more likely he wouldn't jump from being professionally frustrated to calling out teammates by name.

That is weak Quick made that jump, and it makes a lot more sense that Quick just made that jump and not that Bayless casually called out Blake and Miller.

by Mortimer on Dec 13, 2009 2:34 PM PST up reply actions

I wanna hear what Quick says though

Perhaps just before that quote, he and Bayless were specifically discussing Dre and Blake.

Seems much more likely to be about other young PGs, but in a long conversaion, who knows? Bayless is young.

Mountain out of a molehill.

We’ll never know what was really meant by the statement. For all we know, Bayless meant it and regretted it, and Quick will soon state it was a mistake to save face for Bayless, and gain his confidence (as a new source). We’ll really never know for sure, no matter what happens.

And if every Blazer reporter spent all their time calling out each others’ mistakes, nobody would have time to write about the Blazers. Every single Blazer reporter is tossing stones from glass houses with already broken panes.

Not that it wouldn’t necessarily be a positive.

Well, Joel Przybilla would give them a solid backup for the man formerly known as Maybyner Hilario.

Who, however, would Denver give up in return for Przybilla?

Why would Portland trade Przybilla — especially to a team within its own division — when it’s paper thin at center?

What if a third team was added to the trade — which’d allow J.R. Smith to be the guy leaving Denver, but going somewhere other than Portland — to faciliate such a deal?

See, this doesn’t make any sense to me. Though, I’d laugh if Mark Warkentien swindled Kevin Pritchard.

Apparently not when he complained about not being able to scout Jennings

He should have trusted and talked to the scouts Isiah put in place (which are still there). Isiah was a loony when it comes to trading and extending players, but he did have a solid eye for talent and a good scouting process.

Donnie should have known that given that some of the Pacers more solid picks were made during Isiah's time as coach of the Pacers

Donnie Walsh never felt comfortable with Brandon Jennings, and there was no guarantee B-Money blows up in NYC. No guarantee. The kid is a gym rat, but part of the allure with BJ3 has been that so many Bucks fans love him hell or high water. He’s been in the league a month & half, and those fans are fans of the Bucks because of BJ3. Franchises need that despite whatever else they let slip out through the public spectacle.

And it was clear to everyone and their grandmother that Hill just looked a bit like Bosh, but would never play like him

Why draft that guy when you can get the real deal in a year? Why not draft an exciting player who sells tickets this year (Jennings, Lawson, even DeRozan), and maybe helps you to convince LeKing/Wade/Bosh/… to your city? Stupid draft by the Knicks this year. Also by the Cavs, who took a guy who is playing for Badalona’s farm team and about 2 years away from being 2 years away of making the NBA. Now that will convince LeBron to stay!

The funny thing is Jordan Hill measured out to be similar to Drew Gooden and Chris Wilcox, ...

with the latter having failed miserably for the New York Knicks the previous season. Currently, the best move for Donnie Walsh is to package Jordan Hill with Jared Jeffries for an expiring contract like Kenny Thomas of the Sacramento Kings — which he should also do with Wilson Chandler, Toney Douglas, and Eddy Curry by offering them to crazy David Kahn for Mark Blount and Brian Cardinal, who both have expiring contracts — because that way the Knicks can take a stab at two maximum-level free agents next summer.

It's pretty safe to say that they land a top 5 pick next season

As far as I’m concerned, the top 9 in next year’s draft can all be quality NBA starters, with the potential for 2 or 3 superstars. Add to that at the very least a Joe Johnson or Rudy Gay and even somewhat likely a LeBron/Bosh/Amare and that’s a strong team with Harris, Lopez, Lee, CDR and a few role players who are decent. Plus a big arena that will solve most of your financial problems and a potent financier in the background, and you got the next Chelsea London only in basketball. A team not loved by many but feared and secretly admired by a lot.

Understand why someone who doesn't follow the team that doesn't understand that

But at this point, I’d rather have Omri/Donte/Cisco/K-Mart as the 2/3’s for the Kings, along with Beno/Reke at the 1, and JT/Spence (although he’s clearly a 3rd big in a rotation) + whomever they can fill in that rotation.

What I don’t like about Portland, other than Oden’s injury, is that too many guys are probably in a system they aren’t necessarily best suited to play.

Cisco is fairly old, Martin is not much of a defender, and while I like Donte he’s still wildly inconsistent (after last year getting the “bust” label by many observers). That team can reach the playoffs and make some noise every now and then, but I have a hard time labeling that better than OKC, Blazers, or even Memphis in the West. Not to speak of Lakers, Mavs (with huge expiring deals that will be moved), Nuggets, Jazz (with Knicks pick).

Okay.

So was Derrick Rose, and I’m convinced that Tyreke Evans will be better than Rose too. All the right ingredients are in play for this. I know others disagree and that’s fine. Time will bear it out.

Remember though, that I argued with you about the pointlessness of signing another player “just to use the cap room”. You swore up & down Portland needed more assets when they already had 10 or so in play.

You need players who are stars (which Portland has), and you need role players (which Portland also has). But you also need a coaching staff and a players that shame a similar vision, and that ebb & flow is not always there.

The problem with Portland is too much talent, too much similar talent (that does similar things), and foibles of a Brandon Roy who is more comfortable with Steve Blake than Andre Miller. Now, Miller is not perfect and should have not been signed by the Blazers, but that’s a moot point.

Meh. We’ll see how this plays out.

I would throw a lot over board to accommodate him. He could probably also play either the PG or SG with his athleticism. Once he learns to pace himself to get the turnovers down a bit, there is very little he can’t do. Plus some things no PG does, like block shots like a PF.

Hawes, Greene, and Garcia all have below-average PERs. Martin is a nice scorer. Evans has the stats and body of a 2-guard, he’s really Brandon Roy in terms of combo guardness. Casspi could be a nice role player, and Thompson is a good player.

PER is a worthless statistic to me

You don’t watch this team enough to tell me this team has no future when Greene has an up & down statistical year (and I know that which is why his PER sucks).

PER is great for saying LeBron and Kobe are different players. It doesn’t mean jack in evaluation how Donte Greene or Omri Casspi perform within a rotation on a given night.

I'd say Tyreke Evans is more of a small forward, which is fine paired next ...

to a healthy Kevin Martin — especially when they’ve got complementary skill sets — however, the Sacramento Kings still need a true center at the 5 in lieu of the extremely soft Spencer Hawes, who’ll never start for a title contender.

Regarding Donte Greene, he’s basically an average backup at the 3 — which Sacramento has a lot of in him, Omri Casspi, and Andres Nocioni — but his minutes should decrease when Martin and Francisco Garcia return from their respective injuries.

In fact, here’s the rotation that I think the Sacramento Kings should run when Martin and Garcia come off the shelf.

C: Jason Thompson (32)
PF: Omri Casspi (32)
SF: Tyreke Evans (32)
SG: Kevin Martin (32)
PG: Beno Udrih (30)
C: Spencer Hawes (16)
PF: Andres Nocioni (16)
SF: Donte Greene (16)
SG: Francisco Garcia (16)
PG: Sergio Rodriugez (18)

As an up-tempo, run-and-gun team under Paul Westphal, the small lineups are the way to go for the Kings. In the meantime, a trade of Kenny Thomas to the New York Knicks for Jared Jeffries and Jordan Hill would help add some depth on the frontline — especially considering Sean May is a tub of lard who should be out of the league — but in the long run Geoff Petrie will need to land some rebounding and athleticism off the bench.

A guy like Al-Farouq Aminu — who’ll be Josh Smith at best and Tyrus Thomas at worst — would make a good combo forward off the bench to play alongside Donte Greene and replace Andres Nocioni in the rotation.

Oh, and with regards to the center position, I recall that the KIngs were earlier linked to Emeka Okafor. Okafor, who’s a solid post defender and rebounder, is definitely overpaid and has had supposed conflict issues with fellow New Orleans teammates. Yet, rather than move Kenny Thomas’ expiring contract for Okafor, the Kings should consider dumping Nocioni and selling high on Spencer Hawes for him.

As you can see, I dislike Charmin soft 7-footers such as Hawes — who didn’t live up to the hype at the UW — but that’s just me.

That’d give the Kings a three-man frontline rotation of Okafor at the 5, Jason Thompson switching between the 4 and the 5, and Omri Casspi at the 4, with each of them receiving roughly 32 minutes per game. That, along with trading Kenny Thomas for Jared Jeffries and Jordan Hill, would provide the Kings with a much more balanced frontline.

Right now

Portland is the team (out of the three we are discussing) who is best suited to make a title run. Oden and Przy are the combination of interior defenders that a team needs to make a title run. Plus, Portland has the best player out of the 3 teams right now (I take Roy’s playmaking over Durant’s scoring).

The Kings could really use another high lottery pick so they can take Favors or Aldrich or another elite big.

I wouldn't. Rookie Roy already shot well from 2, 3, and the line.

Evans is young, but at this point he looks maybe more athletic (Roy has it, but rarely fully uses it) but not as sophisticated as Roy. Not to speak of Roy’s off-court attractiveness for a franchise.

Miller - Roy - Webster - Aldridge - Przybilla. Is that so hard?

Well

If you noticed, Evans shoots worse from 3, but shoots better overall, and his TS%/eFG% is slightly lower than Roy at this point. Evans also is a slightly better rebounder/assist man than Roy, but Roy is a SG, not a PG like Evans, and doesn’t play that lead G in the same way Evans does.

AST% and TO% are percentages, not affected by pace. They have to do with the overall number of possessions. Roy uses slightly more possessions than Evans.

I don’t see what you are arguing.

get well soon, big guy.

#52

by Cablinasian on Dec 13, 2009 5:52 PM PST up reply actions

I'm arguing....

…that because the Blazers play at very slow pace since Nate Mac has arrived on the shores of PDX, that the Blazers goal is to maximize their possessions with shots. As such, not turning the ball over as much is not a surprise. The goal, or at least what I see, is to slow it down and increase the chances of getting a shot, even a bad shot, rather than speed it up and risk more sloppiness that way.

Evans plays at a much faster pace, handles the ball in ways he’s not always comfortable in (that’s an area of his game that needs to improve if he’s going to take it to the next level), and has only played a few games into his career. Evans TOV% is not that crazy considering.

Look at Steve Nash’s TOV%, Gary Payton’s TOV%, Magic Johnson’s TOV%, and Isiah Thomas’ TOV%. Payton had a similar TOV% to Roy actually. But Magic, Isiah and Nash all have had very high career TOV% in relation. What’s interesting is that the player that reminds me quite a bit, of these 4 I mention, is Gary Payton, and his career TOV% is similar to the one that Tyreke is putting up now.

I don’t think this issue is as clear cut as you’re making it Cab.

Russell Westbrook is a good offensive ...

rebounder for his position, which doesn’t have significant diminishing returns like defensive rebounds.

Jeff Green, however, is a major problem — as he’s got a short standing reach for a 4 and is also a poor fit next to Kevin Durant for defensive reasons — so Sam Presti must soon deal with that roster construction error.

Suffice it to say, I doubt Byron “Bust” Mullens or Serge “Olumide Oyedeji, Jr.” Ibaka are the long-term solution to OKC’s frontline woes.

no team with absolutely zero post scoring and post defense will win a title. The Bulls had Jordan’s post scoring and two of the most dominant defenders of their era for the first threepeat, and Rodman for the second.

OKC has what? A good point guard who hasn’t grown much from last year, a Tracy McGrady clone who passes a little less, a below-average guy who is touted as a star and plays at a position he can’t defend, and a rookie who is pretty nice off the bench.

Nic > Sefolosha
Rudy = Harden

David Lee would give OKC post scoring, but certainly not post defense. I still feel OKC and Orlando ...

should work out a deal of Nick Collison for Marcin Gortat and Brandon Bass. That, however, would need Clay Bennett to open up his wallet — as well as Sam Presti renouncing the cap holds on Robert Swift, Malik Rose, Danny Fortson, and Randy Livingston — to take on extra salary. Right now, I don’t know if OKC is in the financial position to substantially increase its payroll.

playmaking is not overrated. In fact, only one No. 1 star perimeter player has led his team to a title with an AST% even close to as low as Durant’s, with the exception being Rick Barry.

Playmaking out of your primary ballhandler is incredibly important.

That's not fair to Paul Pierce, who was a good defender in his prime. For Ray ...

Allen, it’s unfair to have expected him to be a solid defensive player in light of his limitations athletically. Allen, however, was one of the best pure shooters in NBA history and deserves credit for that. Besides, once Allen got to Boston, he played sound team defense — as he did elsewhere in the past — and had a couple of defensive anchors down low in Kevin Garnett and Kendrick Perkins to hold down the fort.

I think you're not giving Roy enough credit. He has yet to truly show up this year, and think his best ball of this season is not even close to here yet.

When Roy is on he has that intangible “it” that terrifies defenses. Last year his demeanor in the 4th quarter just screamed " I’m gonna win and there’s nothing you can do about it." I haven’t seen that yet from KD. It will come back for Roy, as soon as we get this PG drama figured out, or Nate gets fired.

by dario argento on Dec 13, 2009 5:40 PM PST up reply actions

KD at age 21 is as good as Roy was last year, and way better than Roy is this year.

I think its an absolute no-brainer. I think 30 out of 30 NBA GMs would rather have Durant.

#52

by jksnake99 on Dec 13, 2009 5:41 PM PST up reply actions

Once again, good is relative. Yes, KD scores more, and rebounds more. He shoots more, and is taller.

But I’ve never seen that cool, assertive “I’m going to win and there’s nothing you can do about it” attitude from KD. Yes, he can score and rebound better than Roy. But is he a better overall player? That is open to debate. Roy possesses that intangible “it” that I have yet to see from KD. And yes, I know he scores and rebounds a lot.

This year absolutely I agree. Durant has been better than Roy.

Last year, though, Roy had a quality that I am referring to that KD doesn’t have yet. The “it” I am referring to was Roy’s ability last year to somehow always make the right decision, always get better in the 4th quarter when it matters, and know when the big plays of the game are.

That stuff doesn’t show up in the stats. Few players have it, and KD may never get it.

Greg Oden -- despite his injury woes -- is still more likely to win a ring than Kevin Durant.

For Durant to ever win the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy with his fatally flawed skill set — which includes an inability to make his teammates better or be a defensive anchor — he’ll need to be paired with two low-usage, defensive-minded post players at the 5 and the 4 to have a shot at true glory.

Even then, Durant will be in the fight of his life against vastly superior players who are around his age — such as LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Dwight Howard — thus, I’d aruge that his chances of winning it all are slim to none.

Chad Ford on Oden, "He's definitely a defensive force... I don't think he'll ever put up the big numbers that Shaq did. But he could be the best big man defender in the league... frankly, having a 7 footer that can do that will produce more rings than a 6-11 small forward who can score 30 ppg. That was the thinking all along why GMs preferred Oden to Durant. KD is the sexier player and as an offensive player there is just no comparison. KD is great. Oden is aspiring to average. But defensively, Oden could be dominant. KD ... not so much."

What we need
  • Healthy Roy
  • Healthy Batum
  • Healthy Rudy
  • Jeff and Dante having solid rookie seasons
  • Miller getting used as he should, or a solid PG acquired (wouldn’t know from where, except Sessions/Augustin but Dre should have a leg up over them for the next year or two)
  • Bayless becoming a real backup
  • A defensive effort
  • Some new offensive sets

Rick always had his detractors in the EC (Sac)

So, I understand your point. But, then you have someone like me who hated Rick’s rotations for 6 years, and then suddenly I really appreciated him come his 7th season.

I think it was knowing Rick was dealt a completely crappy situation in 2004-05, and he made it work for the Kings.

Jeff Green should be shooting like seven 3-pointers a game.

Needs to develop his outside shot like Rashard Lewis. He shot the ball well last year. OKC just needs a Dwight Howard in the middle.

I love Kurt Thomas, although you're overrating ...

his trade value by an astronomically absurd amount. Thomas, who’s a nice veteran role player even this late in his career, could probably be had for Travis Outlaw banged up body and cash considerations.

The problem now, though, is that the Portland Trail Blazers are no longer in contention for anything of value this season, so acquiring Thomas wouldn’t be worth it.

I doubt that the Washington Wizards would do it, but I'd offer up Andre Miller and Martell Webster for ...

Mike Miller once he’s healthy. For the Wizards, Miller is a type of veteran pure point guard who’d allow Flip Saunders to slide Gilbert Arenas off the ball — as well as send DeShawn Stevenson to the inactive list — and Webster would be a solid backup 3 behind Caron Butler.

The Wizards would have to release someone to create roster space for such a trade, but a scrub such as Dominic McGuire is expendable.

For the Portland Trail Blazers, Miller is a great offensive fit next to Brandon Roy and has the size and bulk to body up on opposing 3s man-to-man — which is a flaw in Rudy Fernandez’s game — while from a financial standpoint this’d be a good way to cut costs come next year.

Yeah, Dwight Jaynes is decent for a retired journalist doing his thing independently on a blog.

Within the print medium of Portland sports news, John Canzano is the only individual who doesn’t provide anything of real substance — although I’m sure he’s a marketable asset for The Oregonian, which justifies his continued employment from a financial perspective — so I think that folks around here should honestly cut beat reporters like Jason Quick and columnists like Dwight Jaynes some slack. Hell, even Brian T. Smith of The Columbian and his terse one-line paragraphs are of value.

i feel like Quick has started

to get a little too presumptuous with some of his work. This current Bayless stuff that Ben wrote about is a good example. Quick used to just report and give you a general feeling about the team, but now it seems like he’s making a point to draw conclusions about what he’s seeing and leaning towards and maybe sensationalizing a bit too much a la Canzano. He should just get back to reporting and leave the analysis to someone else.

Yes, Jason Quick shouldn't rely on parenthetical quotes to push a story that may ...

Quick does a pretty good job, but he's really emotionally invested in the team

He’s a fan of the Blazers and a fan of several of the players. He does a decent job hiding it a lot of the time, but there are other times when he’s notso impartial.

Canzano sucks, plain and simple. Nothing but ego. Jaynes tends to go in that direction too.

Okay I'm out with this
You see this guy, this guy’s in love with you
Yes I’m in love who looks at you the way I do
When you smile I can tell it know each other very well

How can I show you I’m glad I got to know you ‘cause
I’ve heard some talk they say you think I’m fine
This guy’s in love and what I’d do to make you mine
Tell me now is it so don’t let me be the last to know

My hands are shakin’ don’t let my heart keep breaking ‘cause
I need your love, I want your love
Say you’re in love and you’ll be my guy, if not I’ll just die

Tell me now is it so don’t let me be the last to know
My hands are shakin’ don’t let my heart keep breaking ‘cause
I need your love, I want your love
Say you’re in love and you’ll be my girl, if not I’ll just die

arguments and not enough meat and potatoes. It’s sad that the quality of your posts has recently spiraled downward into an abyss of, well, mediocrity. If nothing else, I really hope this constructive critique helps you step up your game a notch. It’s much more lively when you’re at 100%, so toss aside the gruff disposition, do away with the curt one-liners, and trade in hostility for affability.

Jason Quick, who's a beat reporter, is vastly superior to a hack columnist like John Canzano. If ...

you can’t tell the differences between the two from both a stylistic and substantive standpoint — as beat reporting is more objective and journalistic in nature, while typing up a sports column frequently involves more subjectivity — then I’m sorely disappointed in you.

I expect that Manu Ginobili will either re-sign with the San Antonio Spurs or head back to Europe, for ...

it’s hard to imagine him wearing the unifrom of another NBA team.

Dear Paul Allen:

Fire Kevin Pritchard & hire Dennis Lindsey.
Fire Nate McMillan & hire Jeff Van Gundy.

Sincerely,

Shalom Jewish Blazer fans
The Blazers play the Sacramento Kings at 7 p.m. on the fifth night of the Jewish Festival of Light.

More than 600 people have bought specially priced tickets for the Blazers’ Hanukkah celebration, says Rabbi Chaim Shmaya Wilhelm, who’s organized the event three years in a row. He’s planning a kosher hot dog stand, a menorah lighting in a reserved section of the stands, free T-shirts and maybe a little hora dancing.

Blazer fan mood improving idea

Load up NBA 2k10 or another NBA video game, load up 1 on 1:

Play Bayless vs. Blake as Bayless. Jam in Blake’s face about ten times. I feel much better now and I think you will too.
