Steve Blake's moment has come and gone

I have dreaded seeing Blake in the game so much because he's outplayed by almost everyone in his inability to play solid defense. Defense creates Offense... so let's see more of Bayless. Bayless should be starting. We need Miller to work with the bench (or do we have any bench left?) and his excellent experience can lead them. The team really really misses Batum and his defensive abilities so let's wish him a speedy recovery! No one has stepped up to fill his shoes. I've also noticed that when Roy scores over 30 points, we usually lose. Love that Rudy and his grit and smile! Of course LA is awesome!

Ugh..

They had him guarding LBJ in crunch time. I realize the guy is almost unstoppable, but jeez, it seems Roy or Webster would be better suited to at least try.

I think those were switches.

And he did as good as anyone else in making James shoot tough shots.

Yeah

I was surprised that Blake handled LBJ as well as he did.

"Rudy is not everyday a shooter," Fernandez said. "He's defense. He's passes. He's assists."

After the injuries we've had...

Steve Blake is the closest thing we have to a defensive stopper on the wing.

Are we watching

the same Steve Blake? Stopper? I think my pork roast just flew off the table…

Sure he tried real hard but

it still didn’t stop James from just backing him down and shooting over him. Really bad decision to switch when playing with 2 PGs.

I came away from last night's game with the opposite reaction.

Last night I finally saw why Blake gets the minutes he does. Sure, his shot’s not falling, sure he’s not the greatest defender, but he was one of the few people still trying out there at the end of the game. I cringed when he got switched over to LeBron James, but danged if he didn’t try and pressure James into tougher shots. LeBron made them. But they were not easy shots, more like, “wow, if that’s going in, we can’t stop them” kind of shots.

Bayless tries too. But Bayless is a lot less consistent at it. He’s still trying to find that balance between trying too hard, and fouling everyone, and not trying hard enough, and losing his man. I don’t mind people calling for him to start. Blake’s shot has been struggling all year. And that’s an important part of his being on the floor.

Still, I understand why Blake is starting. And everyone else should too. Because it’s been drilled into us since Kevin Pritchard became the GM. Culture. Culture means that you don’t just give up on a guy because he’s in a slump. To have culture, they have to give the guy who shot lights out from 3 the last two years running a legitimate chance to break that slump. And not just a handful of games.

So if you want to blame Blake, also blame the culture that thinks loyalty for past success is a good thing.

What the Steve-haters need to keep in mind…Blake’s in Portland because of KP, he starts because of Nate and the coaching staff, and he’s in there at the end of the games because of Brandon.

Now, everybody that wants a Blazer team without KP, Nate and Brandon please raise your hand

Bayless should not be starting

He should play more, but he’s done absolutely nothing to suggest that he should be starting.

Um, except play better than the other 2 PGs?

2 things concern me

1) the amount of Minutes given to Blake
2) Roy’s shooting percentage.

put those two things together and no mater what Roy says Blake and Roy are not as effective together as he thinks.

Blake's game is bad

I dont know why he get the minutes he does. I hope that come contract time we let him go. He hurts us more then helps us in my opinion. The road trip he had a zero point game and had the most minutes for point guards, go figure. I would think scoring points would be a good way to win. However I do realize Blake is “scrappy” so lets give him as much minutes as we can while the team struggles. Blake was great last year but this year, his play is bad, defense is mediocre and his vaunted 3 point shooting is bad. I dont say we should start Bayless however we should give him more minutes or trade him. I would rather us trade him then for us to keep him if were not going to give him minutes. Also I am not in love with Nate this year, he has been wishy washy this year and he isnt making the tough calls like he should be. I almost raise my hand on Nate. I am very close to it. Make the tough calls coach, be a coach.

that's terrible.

I can understand your reasoning, but wishing injury on a player is blasphemy.

You obviously haven’t been through a major injury or you would not say something like that. Especially about our own team.

BOO. That sucks. No one wins when a player is injured, perhaps trade him, but why wish for someone to have pain and suffering? Blake does not deserve that. No one does.

maybe he is playing so much

because we are trying to show him off to the league in hopes of trading him.

by NDREXLERDRIVE on Dec 13, 2009 9:25 AM PST reply actions

Showcasing Blake is not working. I doubt we could get Sergio back for him as he is playing lately.

Bayless needs to play. with the injuries we have it;s time to bite the bullet and ignore the mistakes to let him develop on the floor. It;s not going to cost you alot of games .We are already going to lose games as players get worn out from being short handed.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
