Yeah, a year's rust can be hard to shake off
and the opponents aren’t going to give you any breaks.
If Nic had been healthy, we could have been using Martell in places where (to use Nate’s words about Bayless) he would have been likely to succeed, which probably would have helped quite a bit.
He can obviously still stroke it, but it sure would be nice if he could get some consistency. Hopefully this will come.

Um
Martell Webster has been inconsistent for about 4 years now, this is nothing new.
Thanks for not minusing last year....
Technically this is his 4th year….you sir just proved my point.

I think the frustration
comes from his draft position and our NEED for him to play well this year. Przybilla could come in for Oden in case of injury or foul trouble, and Sergio was always our 2nd/3rd PG. Right now Martell is our only healthy SF. Him playing poorly/inconsistently/unfocused forces us to play gimmick lineups for extended periods, which KILLS our team. Roy at the 3 and Miller/Bayless at the 2 means we gie up a LOT of size on defense. Zones that help mask this make rebounding extremely difficult, also killing our defense. As a result, Martell has a much thinner margin for error than many oft-defended former Blazers.
Much like Blake getting played 30+ minutes a game, the main reason fans may be more down on Martell is his draft position. Instead of haing an Olympian and/or All-Star at PG like we could hae, we hae a 3-point specialist who can’t consistently hit the 3, a runner and leaper who lacks the handle to slash… despite being a 5th (I’ll concede 4th…) year veteran. Not to say he won’t figure it out, as many prep-to-pro players take a while to develop… But teams who drafted around us aren’t still waiting.
Incomplete thought to start 2nd paragraph
I didn’t finish my Martell/Blake comparison. Basically, the idea that just like it’s not Blake’s fault the coaches start him and play him extended minutes regardless of how well he plays; it’s not Martell’s fault that we passed on 2 of the 5 best PGs in the NBA to draft him.

This is the season to figure out what Martell has to offer – then move someone based on what we know. – Elgin
