goaltending doesn’t count if it’s lebron.

The refs missed the call.

Cavs should have been awarded 2 points for that Lebron goaltend.

We made a strong effort, but it could’ve been won if we hadn’t had some awful coaching blunders – mainly the one everyone keeps complaining about.

Maybe that's it.

Blake’s destiny is not to be our starting point guard—even when his shot is on, he’s marginal.

blake managed to do play 36 minutes, score no points and turn the ball over by stepping out of bounds with the ball.

Over/under on Bayless' minutes in the 4th quarter = 4 minutes

If you had the under, you win.

52 + 88 = 140% better team.

by xedubx on Dec 11, 2009 7:40 PM PST reply actions

same old stories

Roy extremely inefficient, not showing up at all until the 4th quarter.
LMA with a pathetic effort on the glass and on D
Webster extremely inconsistent and bad on balance
Nothing from Blake yet he still leads the PGs in minutes
-

Miller was great and Howard turned back the clock 10 years. Maybe it would have translated into a win if we’d played Blake less. Maybe not. Roy and LMA not being productive enough is still the biggest issue.

by jksnake99 on Dec 11, 2009 7:50 PM PST up reply actions

ok fair enough

but let’s apply some perspective. The team has suffered serious blows due to injuries… mass injuries to key players. Roy and Lamarcus are likely over-compensating which is being counter productive at times. We just took a good Cav’s team with arguably the greatest player on the planet to the wire and nearly pulled it out.

The PTB are hurt and nothing is going to make us as good as we hoped to be at the start of the season. We’ve got to keep our chins up and stay positive.

Dogs have Owners, Cats have Staff.

not sure how to answer this.

1 game does not suddenly prove Miller can hit 3s and Howard can give you 15 point halves.

by gotyourselfastew on Dec 11, 2009 9:50 PM PST up reply actions

The fact that they almost never do that

Means it is something you can’t rely on regularly.

Andre can score a lot, and do it well, but ya can’t rely on him to make several 3’s in a game because he is a 20% three point shooter for his career, and this season.

by Mortimer on Dec 11, 2009 9:54 PM PST up reply actions

i know

i was just joshin with him cause he was getting a bit riled up and not fully thinking about his phrasing. question though: if a made 3 pointer could somehow save your life and you could chose between blake or miller to take the shot, who would you choose? if this happened tomorrow, i would be pretty damn scared choosing blake. which is endlessly depressing

by gotyourselfastew on Dec 13, 2009 1:56 AM PST up reply actions

Well I haven't seen any sign Howard can score consistently all season

Miller could likely put up significantly more points with an expanded role, on the other hand

by Timmay! on Dec 11, 2009 7:51 PM PST up reply actions

I could expect Miller to average 17.

He did it for the past two seasons on a low possession team.

LMA is a weak man-to-man interior defender and inept weakside help defender, although those of ...

whom who wrongly defend his Charmin soft style of play will argue that he’s a solid perimeter defender off of switches. I hate to break it to those folks, but here it goes anyway. When the best defensive quality of a 4 is his work on the perimeter, that means he’s a sieve on that end of the court.

we did not beat a lot of good teams nor did we beat good teams on the road much at all. okc has done all of those things this year. their schedule has been brutal.

So frustrating

There is so much talent on this roster even with the injuries and as a fan I like every single guy on the team. But they go out there and play so darn sloppy on both ends it’s hard to really love them right now.

Those flashes make it seem like they can hang with anyone but then somebody (coughLMAcough) decides not to play defense, or the offense turns into a game of Horse. Sure, Brandon Roy can make difficult shots, but easy buckets win games.

Execution is about the 5 guys on the floor and the coaches preparing them to play, not who’s sitting at home in rehab.

Greg Oden & Brook Lopez would've made an awesome modern-day Twin Tower, for Lopez works ...

best as a face-up 4 — which he was in college — who can both stick it from mid-range along the high-post or over along one of the baselines. Plus, Lopez would be deadly with the high pick-and-roll; thus, Oden could’ve been used as a traditional back-to-the-basket center, with the occasional side screen-roll to vary it up a bit. Alas, the Portland Trail Blazers are stuck with a soft, steaming pile of excrement like LMA at the 4.

Man, I haven't been this down in regards to the Blazers in a long time

We honestly look like a middle of the pack playoff team, BEFORE most of the injuries. Now we look like a bottom tier playoff team at best…

Brandon doesn’t look the same at all, I was hoping for improvement from LA, but he looks like he has regressed to his 2nd year self. We finally sign a great point guard and he hasn’t been integrated into the lineup hardly at all, after almost a third of the season, while Blake has fallen flat in even the things he did very well for us in the past couple years. Martell looks like the exact same player from 2 years ago.

Everything about this team reminds me almost exactly of the 07-08 Blazers… which is a significant regression…

Just really doesn’t feel good as a fan of this team now. I can’t even picture how we could possibly win a playoff series this year, including the injuries. Championship contenders in the next 5 years? Doesn’t even look like a possibility right now. And I don’t know how it is going to be fixed.

Basically, I feel sad.

Kiki Vandeweghe was a horrible defender and never should've been acquired by ...

Portland in the first place during June of 1984. In fact, I’d partly blame his acquisition on the Trail Blazers drafting Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan.

“The main problem with the 1984 off-season was the short-sighted Kiki Vandeweghe trade in which the team decimated its depth for a defensively inept, high-volume shooting small forward.

Instead of trading Wayne Cooper, Calvin Natt, and Fat Lever — along with a couple of draft picks — for Vandeweghe, the Trail Blazers should’ve not made the deal and, moreover, drafted Michael Jordan in lieu of the oft-injured Sam Bowie with the 2nd pick in the ’84 NBA Draft.

Under that scenario, the 1984-1985 Trail Blazers could’ve possibly trotted out the following roster.

C: Mychael Thompson
PF: Calvin Natt
SF: Michael Jordan
SG: Jim Paxson
PG: Darnell Valentine
C: Wayne Cooper
PF: Kenny Carr
SF/SG: Clyde Drexler
PG: Fat Lever
C: Audie Norris
SG: Bernard Thompson
PG: Steve Colter

Now, with that noted, I didn’t include Jerome Kersey on that revised rendition of the ‘84-’85 roster, as he’d’ve had a tough time making the team out of camp as a second-round draft pick with that loaded of a ballclub. Bernard Thompson, who was a low first-round draft pick that very same year, would’ve had an edge over Kersey that fall on making the team."

On a side note, a three-wing rotation of Michael Jordan, Clyde ...

Drexler, and Jim Paxson would’ve been awesome. Drexler likely would’ve developed into a full-time 3 due to his size and dribble-drive/slashing game, while Jordan would’ve become the 2 he did become in Chicago. Jim Paxson, who was entering his late-20s around 1984, would’ve probably soon became a high-scoring sixth man behind those two guys. In hindsight, it’d’ve been good times for Portland had Kiki Vandeweghe never entered the picture.

Brandon Jennings vs. Steve Blake will be fun tonight

I like you Steve, but seriously over long stretches you bring nothing to the game. Not an offensive threat on fast breaks, drives, and barely on outside shots. And how you got a defensive rating of “excellent” on pick and rolls is mesmerizing. Super solid backup, but just not what you want out of your starter on PG. It brings the whole team on another level when Miller plays at least decent.

He was trying very hard on defense, even with vastly overmatched.

But sooooo many minutes for someone who just doesn’t offer much… makes it so hard to love the effort, when the talent level and what he offers the team just isn’t much. It just… ain’t… much.

Because he has been around

And the Oden injury hasn’t helped things, in addition to Nate’s injury, as no one is trying to change things up— just maintain.

Roy also hasn’t been playing well so everyone wants to do what they can to make him play as good as he can, and they may mistakenly (or who knows, might not be a mistake) believe that Blake is a big part of what helps Roy.

Nothing has gone right, and I also see the coaches attempting to just recapture what made LMA and Roy good before at the very least, and with all of the turmoil having even more change might be avoided… for better or worse.

I think a big problem has that we’ve still gone to the Roy-creates-everything-offense with Miller in there, when that just doesn’t make sense. So of course Roy will be more comfortable with a shooter next to him…

and spur is behind us!make the playoff?we should make more efforts now!

by stellera on Dec 11, 2009 8:44 PM PST reply actions

No such thing as a good loss....

…but this is as close as you can get. For the first time this season they consistently pushed the tempo and even when they didn’t get fast break points, they got into the set offense much earlier in the shot clock. The energy and hustle from last year was back in evidence. Miller played a great game. We got contributions from Howard and Webster (at least for a quarter). Its true Blake gave us no points – even a couple of buckets could have made the difference – but he did have 8 assists and actually played surprisingly scrappy defense on Lebron, who he has no business even trying to cover.

The biggest issue was Varejo. Here’s a guy who averages 7.3 points a game goes off for 22, mostly on those screen and rolls to the basket. I don’t know if it was Aldrige who was supposed to stay with him, but if so this is on him. You would think by the 5th time it happened he would have seen it coming and, y’know, maybe roll with Varejao (this happened to Howard a couple of times too). LA was also out rebounded by everyone’s favorite whipping boy Steve Blake – LA had 2 to Blake’s 3. This kills me. LA has the athleticism to be a defensive force and rebounder. If he and Roy become ever get as good at D as they are at O, this team’s ceiling is unlimited. So frustrating to watch that not happen. Hey, one other thing. Would it kill our guards to at least once hit a big rolling of a high screen? Just once? Blake and GO did it a couple times last year (Phoenix game) and it was killer.

Would have loved to seen more Bayless. Has anybody noticed that he’s driving and kicking WAY better than last year? Team energy also ups whenever he’s in. Still a head down scorer most the time, but definitely signs of progress. I agree he should be getting more minutes, especially tomorrow night on the second game of a back to back when fresh legs will be at a premium. And JB’s legs are tragically fresh due to lack of minutes.

Anyway, Cleveland pretty much woke up defensively in the second half and we couldn’t get over the hump. Hard for Roy to finish around the basket with Lebron able to swoop off his man. That call could have gone either way, but it’s 4th quarter in Cleveland and it’s Lebron so Roy isn’t going to get that call. But hey they fought all the to end with 9 guys. If they can carry this effort over on a consistent basis, we should be okay.

OK, that’s it for my first BE post. More as events warrant.

but if I’m him, I’d be demanding a trade. Too much talent to go to waste sitting behind Blake, who’s a joke. I hope he can find a good situation like Channing has found.

I have to agree

If I’m Jerryd Bayless I’m probably just frustrated as hell over the inconsistent minutes. What does he have to do? He’s improved the mid-range game, he gets to the line, he’s an effective spark off the bench. If the Blazers are truly eying some sort of mid-season move to acquire a wing defender as everyone is saying, shouldn’t the team be doing more to see if they can get by with a Miller/Bayless or Blake/Bayless ugh rotation at the point?

In the four games where Bayless has gotten over 15 minutes of PT, he’s averaged 13 points (including an average of seven free throws attempted per game) in 19 minutes, he’s improved (somewhat) as a defender, and he doesn’t turn the ball over (only 9 TOs on the season, on a team that’s had major issues holding onto the ball.) Yes, he’s putting up those stats mostly against second units, but still, he should be getting more of an opportunity.

I’ve given the team the benefit of the doubt thus far; McMillan isn’t an idiot and it’s probably some factor we’re not aware of as fans. But to see Blake get 36 minutes tonight contributing zero points and four turnovers while an athletic youngster like Bayless sits, that’s gotta be driving him nuts. Kevin Pritchard has repeatedly said that Bayless has not asked for a trade; I’m not sure I buy it.

Including his 4-13 shooting this game...

Martell Webster is shooting 36.9% for the season (3pt% of 35.5). In the 5 December games, he is shooting 25%.

…just don’t know what to say.

Didn't see the game, but...

looking at the boxscore it appears
1) Martell played 7 minutes at the ‘4’ in a small ball lineup, therefore:
2) Roy played 20 minutes at the ‘3’, therefore:
3) 28 minutes of playing time at the ‘2’ were up for grabs, therefore:
2) Bayless played 8 minutes total, let’s assume it was all at the ‘2’, therefore:
5) Blake played 20 minutes at the ‘2’ in addition to the 16 minutes he played PG when Miller was out.

Sound about right? In addition, Miller played 32 minutes, Blake played 36 minutes, and Bayless only 8 minutes. Given that Blake was scoreless on 4 shots and had 4 turnovers while Miller had 20/6/3 with only 2 turnovers (8-13 shooting), and Bayless had 2 points, 2 assists and no turnovers in his limited time, can someone please explain to me why on Earth Blake continues to recieve so many minutes? Is there some superhuman feat he accomplished out there that does not show up in the boxscore?

This situation makes me want to scream. How anyone can think Blake playing 20 minutes a game at shooting guard is a good idea is just beyond me.

How did you guys win that?

Why won't the media

flat out ask them what Bayless has to do to earn more playinig time. Or better yet, ask them why Blake get’s so much time. I’m tired of the Blazers organization ignoring the obvious.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.

OK, that should just about wrap up the goaltending discussion.
