Junk 12/10 --Light my Fire
My best friend's birthday was two days ago. As it happens this is the same birthday of Jim Morrison. I grew up on the Doors, and today, I still declare them my all time favorite band, even though I now rarely listen to them. No matter what, though, I can put on LA Woman and listen through the whole album. It got me thinking:
In this day of singles, iTunes and youtube, do you still listen to albums, all the way through? If so, what albums can you always rely upon, for a listen from beginning to end? And, since we live in the NW, what is the best album for the rain? What is your favorite album from a local (NW) band?

When I was in college, I used to sneak away to my girlfriend’s room to put on some LP’s—she was the only one I knew of on campus with a record player. I would either listen to Dave Brubeck’s Time Out, or Fleetwoodmac’s Rumors, over and over. I sometimes wish I was cool enough to own a record player and listen to LP’s. I can’t remember, other than being out at a bar, the last time I sat down at a record player, after college.
i never can get myself into Fleetwood Mac

As good as he is as a
singer, songwriter and guitar player (and he is pretty good on the guitar), his greatest strength is as a producer. I am amazed more acts don’t try to get him to produce them

I'll play your game
Fave Local of the moment: Ascetic Junkies
Albums I come back to over and over again: Neon Bible and Funeral by Arcade Fire, Come on feel the Illinoise by Sufjan Stevens, Elephant and Destijl by The White Stripes, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot by Wilco, Vampure Weekend by Vampire Weekend, Shockvalue by Timbaland, Volume One by She & Him, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix by Phoenix, Stankonia by Outkast
Fave Album of All time (right now): Let Go by Nada Surf
I listen to a lot of Hip Hop as well, but good complete albums are harder to come by in that genre
Nice list. You gonna check Phoenix when they come next month? I’ve been listening to a lot of Lucky by Nada Surf lately.

Is “I Never Promised You a Rose Garden” especially this line, “I beg your pardon,

So serious question
I just ended a season in “MY player” mode on NBA 2k10 and was offered contracts by the Knicks (team I started with), Clips, Lakers and Celtics. My instinct is to go with Boston (I’m a PG with a rating of 76) but what do you all think?

The ones that I still can and sometimes do:
Wolfmother by Wolfmother
College Dropout by Kanye West
Food & Liquor by Lupe Fiasco
Elephant by The White Stripes
Franz Ferdinand by Franz Ferdinand
The Moon and Antarctica by Modest Mouse
I would put 2001, The Chronic, and Life After Death, but I usually just pick out the songs I like and skip the other ones…
What do all of you think about “Greatest Hits” Albums? I got this pretty sweet greatest hits album of The Jimi Hendrix Experience that I listen to all the time.

Hello. How are you?
Have you been alright, through all those lonely lonely lonely lonely lonely nights
That’s what I’d say. I’d tell you everything
If you’d pick up that telephone yeah yeah yeah
Hey. How you feelin?
Are you still the same?
Don’t you realize the things we did, we did, were all for real, not a dream?
I just can’t believe
They’ve all faded out of view yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Doowop dooby doo doowop doowah doolang
Blue days black nights doowah doolang
I look into the sky, the love you need ain’t gonna see you through
And I wonder why the little things you planned ain’t coming true
Oh oh Telephone Line, give me some time, I’m living in twilight
Oh oh Telephone Line, give me some time, I’m living in twilight
Ok. So no one’s answering
Well can’t you just let it ring a little longer longer longer oh oh ooohhhhh
I’ll just sit tight through shadows of the night
And let it ring for evermore oh oh ooohhhhh yeah yeah yeah
Doowop dooby doo doowop doowah doolang
Blue days black nights doowah doolang
When I look into the sky, the love you need ain’t gonna see you through
And I wonder why the little things you planned ain’t coming true

The album was nominated for Grammy Award for Album of the Year, and won Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song for “Jesus Walks” in 2005. It was voted as the best album of the year by Rolling Stone magazine and in The Village Voice Pazz & Jop critics poll, was ranked #1 in Spin magazine’s “40 Best Albums of the Year”, and received a near-perfect 4.5 mic rating from The Source. Comedian Chris Rock has attested to listening to The College Dropout while writing his material.53 In 2005, Pitchfork Media named it #50 in their best albums of 2000–2004. In 2006, the album was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 best albums of all time.54 In its July 4, 2008 issue, Entertainment Weekly listed College Dropout as the fourth best album of the past 25 years.55 The magazine later listed the album as the best album of the decade.56

I admit to liking Scream by Michael and Janet Jackson
I think it might be his best together with his live performances (e.g. the Billy Jean), at least the video has a creative concept. I don’t believe him to be a big bad guy like in Bad one second, that’s just ridiculous. But I do believe him to be in a bad mood about people not leaving him alone or what he wants to be and getting so angry about it that it makes him wanna scream.
that was really cool video

being at work really makes me fall behind on my junking.
albums: i pretty much exclusively listen to full albums these days as I listen mostly in my car. Although i always have my Ipod on shuffle when I listen.
Favorite album by a local band: Hazards of Love by The Decemberists.
Best album for the rain: Endless Numbered Days by Iron and Wine—-i guess.
I've had a couple of those discs in my car for well over a month now.
Creek Drank the Cradle and the 2 disc set of Around the Well. I can’t stop listening to them.

Per Hollinger:
Jeff (Portland)
Why do Steve Blake play SO MANY minutes for the Blazers when they have better players on the bench?
John Hollinger
(12:36 PM)
Brandon Roy loves playing with Blake and McMillan has given Roy a lot of rope, but they need to look really hard at this. Blake is a backup. Period. If Blazers are going anywhere this year, and I’m not necessarily sure they are, it will be with either Miller or Bayless running point
I'd give Bayless a lot of OJT this year
Let him go out there and screw up. If his confidence begins to flag, get him out – but otherwise let him play through his mistakes, until they begin to lessen. – Elgin

I just got word from the front office that during the blazers first time out mike barrett asked for steve blakes hand in marriage. Persionally i think mike barrett needs to can it about how great he thinks steve blake is, whitch i dont understand because he SUCK!!!! Steve blake is the worst blazer ever, he has no defensive ability and even though he has a good shot he cant pass for crap. not to mention how ugly he is, i mean holy crap he has viens popping out of his head. Him and mike barrett are two horible people. I am officially starting the I Hate Steve Blake fanclub

more:
John, do the Blazers have to make a deal this year? KP has struggled to complete in season trades so far, but with only 9 healthy players and really only 6 healthy rotation playres left he has to make something happen right? Would Orlando give up Bass? Or Washington give up Miller for what the Blazers can offer?
John Hollinger
(12:58 PM)
Blazers will look really hard at any deal for a stretch 4 who can replace what Outlaw was giving them. That’s the big priority right now. I also think they wouldn’t mind dealing for a true 3, and it’s my sneaking suspicion that if Caron Butler came available they’d say yes in a nanosecond.

She's Got Issues is hillarious
I’m seeing this girl and she just might be out of her mind
Well she’s got baggage and it’s all the emotional kind
She talks about closure and that validation bit
I don’t mean to be insensitive, but I really hate that sh*t
And I said yeah, yeah
Oh man she’s got issues
And I’m gonna pay
Yeah, yeah
She thinks she’s the victim
Yeah
Now I know she’ll feel abandoned
If I don’t stay over late
And I know she’s afraid to commit
But it’s only our second date
And I said yeah, yeah
Oh man she’s got issues
And I’m gonna pay
Yeah, yeah
She says she’s the victim
But she takes it all out on me
I don’t know why you’re messed up
I don’t know why your whole life is a chore
Just do me a favour
And check your baggage at the door
Now she talks about her ex nonstop, but I don’t mind
But when she calls out his name in bed
That’s where I draw the line
You told me a hundred times how your father left and he’s gone
But I wish you wouldn’t call me daddy
When we’re gettin’ it on
And I said yeah, yeah
Oh man she’s got issues
And I’m gonna pay
Yeah, yeah
She’s playing the victim
And taking it all out on me
Yeah, yeah
My god she’s got issues
And I’m gonna pay
Gonna pay
Gonna pay
Gonna pay
Gonna pay
Gonna pay
Wooh….Yeah
If you think I’m controlling
Then why do you follow me around
If you’re not co-dependent
Then why do you let others drag you down
I don’t know why you’re messed up
I don’t know why your whole life is a chore
Just do me a favour
And check your baggage at the door

In terms of Classic Rock
The album I listen through the most these days is probably Sticky Fingers by the Stones. I don’t think anyone has mentioned the Stones, so I thought i’d give them there due. I also like to listen through let it bleed, starting w/ give me shelter and ending w/ you can’t always get what you want.

Here is an eclectic mix of the albums I listen to all the way through...
Drive-By Truckers – Brighter Than Creation’s Dark
Jackson Browne – Running on Empty
Mary Chapin-Carpenter – Come on, Come on
Todd Snider – Peace, Love and Anarchy
ZZ Top – Live from Texas
The Pulsators – Here’s to You
John Hiatt – Perfectly Good Guitar
Def Leppard – Hysteria
Journey – Escape (favorite album cover of all time)
BoDeans – Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams
Chumbawumba – Tub Thumping
Yes, it’s a strange list….but I AM rather strange….

ZZ Top
ZZ TOP´S First Album
They were getting their act together quick. Nice moments.
RIO GRANDE MUD
Some very nice moments including Just Got Paid
TRES HOMBRES
Here’s where they hit their stride. There are no clinkers on this record.
FANDANGO!
Great half-live, half-studio album recorded before they got famous!
TEJAS
They begin to spend money in big studios. Throws ’em off a little but not too bad. Arrested For Driving While Blind.
THE BEST OF ZZ TOP
Catches you up on the above albums.
DEGÜELLO
Serious radio airplay. This one makes them as big as Aerosmith. Fool for Your Stockings and Cheap Sunglasses.
EL LOCO
Deguello, Part 2. Excellent tunes all the way through.
ELIMINATOR
After a short break they come back and make a stripped down rock album. Hot stuff. Sharp Dressed Man and Legs.
AFTERBURNER
The Amazing MTV Videos record. Sleeping Bag, Stages, Woke Up with Wood, Velcro Fly.
3CD THE ZZ TOP SIXPACK
Six of the above records in their entirety on three CDs.
RECYCLER
A cut below their earlier stuff.
GREATEST HITS
Revamped to include their MTV salad days.
ANTENNA
Better than Recycler – not as good as Afterburner.
ONE FOOT IN THE BLUES
A retrospective that shows their bluesier side. They love the blues!
RHYTHMEEN
Overlooked and very snappy.
XXX
All the way back to upper level stuff. No clinkers on this one either.
CHROME, SMOKE & BBQ
An updated version of the ZZ Top Six Pack – four disks from all eras.
MESCALERO
More high quality stuff.
RANCHO TEXICANO
A nice 2-disk overview of their entire career.
- Elgin
Travis Outlaw, the Funnel Cake of the Blazers
Totally agree about Recycler....
Yet that year they had a freaking amazing concert tour……The set was something else. They pretty much brought a junk yard with them to each venue.

I was thinking about putting on a Nofx album (White Trash, Two Heebs and a Bean) but I usually skip around there
I had a friend who was so much into Nofx, Bad Religion, etc. in high school it was comical. He would have driven anywhere in Europe to see them.
nice choices on the Miles

Those All-Star votes are such a sad joke it's not even funny
http://www.nba.com/2009/news/12/10/allstar.vote.update.1/index.html
All-Star voting should go by “what have you done for me lately”, and not by “is a Chinese player on your team” and “where you once good”.
They should put Michael Jordan on the ballot, just to see what would happen.
I get the paper, so I don't care!
I sorta have a cockeye'd theory on Mclady
I think that many fans wanted “their” guard to get voted on. So, the fan would vote once for their player, then vote once for McLady. The reason to do this is if you vote for your guard, plus the conferences other best guard (prolly Kobe in the west), then you run the risk of your player not getting in, so you fit that by voting for a player that couldn’t possibly make it. Unfortunately, everyone plus China voted for Tracy McGrady.
I get the paper, so I don't care!
I keep voting for Scola as my “other” forward… is that bad?

The Williamette Weeks is not a big fan of believing in Oden. See Fanshots. I can only imagine the outrage if Canzano had written that.
it’s time for all of us to admit something: The best thing we can do for Oden is to stop believing in him.
It’s time to stop the ridiculous pretense that drafting Oden first over Kevin Durant was anything but a mistake. Oden has one leg longer than the other. His kneecap splinters without touching anything. When this season ends, he will have spent nearly twice as much of his NBA career in rehab as on the court. Quite simply, he is probably not built to play basketball

"Those guys are a playoff team and are one of the top teams in the West," Durant said. "Without him they wouldn’t be there. So I guess I’m living in his shadow. He was the No. 1 pick. I was the No. 2. And his team is doing better. I’m just trying to fight toward that with my team. So I wouldn’t say he’s in my shadow."
He also said in an Oklahoman interview that he is still not happy he wasn’t the #1 pick. I’m not sure if he just meant that in terms of being the #1 instead of the #2, or also meant he would have preferred going to Portland :)
I am so far out of the mainstream music scene that
i dont recognize half of the names, once in a while I hear some rap that I like but pay so little attention to it I have no idea who the artist is. +92 for Back In Black
I also feel about the same in regards to Highway To Hell. What a pair of book-end albums! “Highway” was Bon Scott’s last before he passed away….and “Back” is Brian Johnson’s first album with the band…both are brilliant.
BTW have you ever heard the Back In Black demo with Bon Scott on vocals…..a different arraignment but an interesting look at how things might have been different if he hadn’t died

my parabolics are 183's, I have to say I love the new shaped ski's, so much easier turning those shorty's
but the wide shovel really washes out when I’m bombing a run, you have to stay on edge constantly, which is the opposite of how I used to ski my skinnies.

by Tyler Durrden on Dec 10, 2009 4:19 PM PST up reply actions
I got a pair of parabolics that were a little skinnier up front… Atomics FTW… so I don’t have that wash-out problem… they are also a few years old, so they are not quite as deeply cut as some of the newer ones seem to be ( I think they are ’04’s) They are actually faster in a straight line than my old Rossignals I used to ski
by The Arkitect on Dec 10, 2009 4:28 PM PST up reply actions
Nice. I took a long hiatus from skiing and picked up snowboarding instead
but after doing that for about twelve years I really started jonesin for some skiing again, so I went and got some Head’s a couple years ago, and just kind of trusted the shop with picking them out for me. They are really fast, and it’s not a huge deal, I just have to change my style a little. Heck it’s probably all for the best since I’m not a crazy teenager anymore. I used to be quite reckless on my skis, but I don’t think my knees could handle that stuff anymore.

yeah, i tried snowboarding a few times a couple of years ago, but I learned to ski at age 3, so it was frustrating being stuck on the beginner runs again, so i quit and went back to skiing… The older I get, the more interested I am in the technical runs rather than tucking Blues like I used to do… i abuse my knees like nobodies business when i ski… I figure what doesn’t kill them makes them stronger
by The Arkitect on Dec 10, 2009 4:37 PM PST up reply actions
Oh those beginner runs suck on a snowboard
I’ve taught a few people to do it, and I pretty much get them off the flats as soon as possible. I found snowboarding’s learning curve to be much more rapid than skiing really. I don’t think it takes as much coordination, but it does take some getting used to going down sideways.

He doesn't say, just that fouls and injuries are limiting him
Oden is a more effective player than several of the ones ahead of him on this list, but the fact that he’s played only one-third of his possible career games forces me to drop him to 10th. Before fracturing his patella this past weekend, Oden, 21, was enjoying a breakout season, averaging nearly a point every two minutes on 60.5 percent shooting and ranking third in rebound rate. Despite missing the past three games, he’s still second in blocks (2.3 per game), which is pretty impressive considering his limited minutes (23.9 a game).
What holds down his minutes, however, is that Oden still has issues with committing fouls. Thus, his problems staying on the court exist on two levels — staying healthy enough to put on the uniform and preventing the clumsy fouls that have plagued his career thus far. But when he plays extended minutes, he can dominate.
Jefferson is too high on that list IMO, should be down below Horford
I would also consider taking Lopez or M. Gasol over Bynum.

Plus/minus might become the most misleading advanced statistic in pro sports :)
But yeah, if Kevin gets his defense of pick and rolls together and doesn’t take as many contested shots as he used to, and maybe adds a few assists per game and limits his turnovers to < 5 every game, he’ll be off the charts. And excuses for passing on him will be few and far between.
Lists, lists everywhere!
Honestly, reading JD’s sometimes just helps reminds me of my huge list-making deficiencies. I just rarely make them… and certainly can’t produce lists like this on demand and so thorough. I guess I’m just listless :p

i said almost.
not that i did. there was just a lot of cussing and flailing about.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 10, 2009 5:45 PM PST up reply actions
Would I bungee jump?
I think I would sky dive before I would bungee jump. Jumping out of a plane is more surreal. Unfortunately, heights arent really my thing. The funny thing about that is I conquered my fear of jumping off cliffs into water, and now I can’t enough of it. Maybe I just need to try bungee and skydiving….
RUDY > MJ
#52
you know what's weird about skydiving?
it doesn’t feel like falling and the heights thing doesn’t really come in to play. strange. my brother went and he’s scared of heights. the fear of heights is much more in play in bungee jumping.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 10, 2009 5:46 PM PST up reply actions
Thats what I always thought. too...
Something about seeing the rocks/water/ground that my face would splatter on if something went wrong bungee jumping seems to bother me more than looking out a plane window and seeing what looks like a giant landscape painting…
RUDY > MJ
#52
that's exactly how it was for me. and i'm not that scared of heights.
after you’re out of the plane in skydiving, it feels like floating. it’s really loud, then the cord is pulled and it get silent instantly. absolutely incredible feeling. then you look all around you…..it’s great.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 10, 2009 5:58 PM PST up reply actions
I can't decide what I would rather do.
I’m not scared of heights at all but both might freak me out. I want to do both though.
#52
you should sky dive. for sure.
do that first at least.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 10, 2009 5:50 PM PST up reply actions
Yeah, bungee jumping is scarier because you always have relation to other objects
And it really just catches you when your mind thinks “that’s it, I’m dying now”.
plus it feels like falling to your death.
and you have to actually jump. with skydiving the first time, you’re strapped to an expert and they more or less push you out of the plane.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 10, 2009 6:02 PM PST up reply actions
I have always wondered if somebody ever puked during their first skydive...
Or actually pooped themselves, it would really suck to be the expert riding tandem if either took place…

Seattle is overrated in my opinion.
I’ve been living here for almost 10 years. It wants to be considered a top tier city, but San Fran, LA, Chicago, NYC, DC, and Boston will all laugh at Seattle.
"I'm at the thingamajig talking the yakety-yak" - Kenny Smith
yeah.
seattle : biggest cities in US :: Portland : seattle.
Seattle really is just Portland on roids. More stuff to do, more sports teams. but pretty much the same culture.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 10, 2009 6:48 PM PST up reply actions
In terms of living there, I would take Seattle definitely over DC and LA, probably over NYC too. Chicago is nice but the climate is a bit tough. Boston is pretty European, but all in all enjoyable. San Francisco is mostly very nice unless you get hit by earthquakes ;) But so is Seattle and Portland.
yeah.
because then all the Portlanders can look down on the people not giving it respect, saying they just don’t know and wouldn’t understand why pdx is so awesome anyway. all the Portlanders understand because they’re better. haha.

they work for you, you pay them to provide you service, but if you’re not careful they’ll get all greedy on ya, and that’s when you gotta drop the hammer!! They will always hook you up, you just gotta ask.
I was blinded to that by sick alley-oops and facials

I'm glad Sandra Bullock is back on top
She gets too much flack for her box office bombs. Most classy leading lady in Hollywood.

No yet.
I need to finish the book first.
"I'm at the thingamajig talking the yakety-yak" - Kenny Smith
who reads books?

Odenized
WHAT!!!!??????
smh…..
MacBeth is one of the best things ever written.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 10, 2009 7:44 PM PST up reply actions
what do you need?
i won’t do the thing for you but i can give some advice. first piece of advice: get The New Folger Library edition of the play. They break down each act by scene and have really helpful liner notes.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 10, 2009 7:47 PM PST up reply actions
MacBeth is an incredibly awesome play-- bloody, spooky, exciting, thought provoking
It has inspired about 1000 film versions including “Throne of Blood,” by Kurosawa, “Men of Respect,” which is a mafia version and “Scotland, PA” which is set at a burger joint.

I suppose MW2 might qualify too as a version of the betrayal elements in the play
Maybe even Jersey Shore.
And odd Italian-sounding names
Angelina “Jolie”
Jenni “J-Woww” Farley (I like the second W. As if I new someone with just one)
Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino (according to Simmons and his buddy he could become a major “star”)
Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi
Paul “DJ Pauly D” Delvecchio
Ronnie
Sammi “Sweetheart” Giancola
Vinny
Here you can create your own Jersey Shore style Guido/Guidette name http://rumandmonkey.com/widgets/toys/namegen/13021/
You know too much about that show
You watch American football, and know all about Jersey Shore.
I just can’t trust any Euro who does both of those things, Norsk… one of them? Okay, room for “different” types like that around here.
But both?
Man…

I like Othello myself.
Mostly because of Iago.
"I'm at the thingamajig talking the yakety-yak" - Kenny Smith
same here.
that’s my second favorite after Hamlet. but MacBeth is really really close.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 10, 2009 7:54 PM PST up reply actions
Othello is another incredible play.
King Lear is also incredible and of course Hamlet. Julius Caesar is also pretty great.
Among the comedies, its hard to top A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
#52
i thought Romeo and Juliet was hilarious.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 10, 2009 7:56 PM PST up reply actions
I wonder which Shakespeare's have inspired the most film adaptations
If I had to guess, I’d say it would be:
1) Hamlet
2) MacBeth
3) Romeo and Juliet
Othello, King Lear, The Taming of the Shrew also come to mind and I’m sure there are a few I am forgetting.
#52
i wouldn't have any idea.
that’s a good question.
my favorite adaptation, though, is the Zeffelini version of Romeo and Juliet with Olivia Hussey. Incredible soundtrack in that movie.
by DrivetheLane on Dec 10, 2009 7:59 PM PST up reply actions
Uh, there's no nudity in that one though.
I like that one, but I really really really don’t like Danes. And I think the energy of the film overall peters out after the nice start.

You don't like movies where DiCaprio has his shirt off half the time?!?
AK1984.
Mortimer.
Norsktroll.
how's there a book & a movie after he was just picked in the draft? dang
by portlandgiirl91 on Dec 10, 2009 7:47 PM PST up reply actions
The book came first.
Micheal Lewis wrote it. He’s the guy who wrote Moneyball that basically popularized this stat oriented analysis in sports.
"I'm at the thingamajig talking the yakety-yak" - Kenny Smith
yeah but i'm saying isn't he from this previous draft class
by portlandgiirl91 on Dec 10, 2009 7:53 PM PST up reply actions
Yea...but isn't the story in his high school to college days?
I don’t think his draft was that recent. I haven’t started the book to be honest. It’s sitting on a pile of books I need to read.
"I'm at the thingamajig talking the yakety-yak" - Kenny Smith
mainly HS but very little college cuz that was towards the end
but i’m pretty sure he’s a rookie right now? not 100% sure tho.

I saw it. I am not ashamed to say I am a heterosexual man who loved it and cried in the movie theater.

Foye = Roy
If you look at the per minute stats, it’s pretty close in 2006.
"I'm at the thingamajig talking the yakety-yak" - Kenny Smith
The West is so incredibly "meh" this year.
OKC could finish as high as 3rd or 4th. That’s how unimpressed I am with all these teams. The Lakers are going to absolutely cruise to the finals.
#52
I think the entire NBA is down this year.
The level of play is weak. Lakers can steamrolled to the finals.
"I'm at the thingamajig talking the yakety-yak" - Kenny Smith

Its one of the best ways to get fouled, and thus get to the FT line for ez points, and score in the paint.
