The Dontonio Wingcast Episode 014
Basketball Prospectus's Kevin Pelton and I are back with a full-length (50 minutes) episode of The Dontonio Wingcast, this time with no musical interruptions. We take up the only topic anyone cares about: What's wrong with the Blazers and what are some possible fixes?
- We react to Dave's excellent piece.
- KP2 looks at pace, Nate McMillan's previous relationships with star like Ray Allen, establishing an offensive pecking order, and the role of role players.
- I discuss some general locker room observations, changes in Brandon Roy's demeanor from last year, the impact of Nic Batum's injury, a first look at Dante Cunningham and a few little tidbits about the 2010 NBA draft.
You can subscribe to our iTunes feed or stream/download the mp3 here: Download The Dontonio Wingcast 014. The mp3 is 46 megabytes.

wingcast
Love that you’re wingcasting regularly. Lemme know when there’s ZERO cussing and I’ll listen again.
I don't agree with your primnes, but I really admire the way you took yourself out of the equation
rather than telling Ben he should adjust for you. If we could get everyone to think that way, there’d be far fewer arguments.

Can someone give BlazerABE a bleeped remix?

My entry for the book of books:
Starting 5
Jose Barea of the Mavs—with 24 minutes per game, 8.8 points, 4.1 assists, he can play alongside Jason Kidd or wreak havoc himself as Kidd’s mini-me. Easily overlooked with Jason Terry and the pterodactyl Beaubois, Barea is a fire hydrant with legs.
A 2nd undersized guard Ty Lawson. Again on a successful team like Barea, there are no worries when Billups leaves the game. This will pay off for both the Mavs and the Nuggets for the playoffs. 21 minutes as a rookie, 8.7 points and with seriously strong shooting stats, Lawson brings quiet stability and strength to a team with more than enough dramatic egos.
With the Hawks, Jamal Crawford is off the bench and in the scoring column. Though his 3’s are down (%), his FG% and FT% are strong and almost 17 ppg as a 6th man can take over a game by himself.
Two big men get the nod—both on bad teams. Marc Gasol and Brook Lopez. They’re worth watching just to see how a big man should play using the skills and smarts that he has and instead of uber athleticism. They also bear watching to see how long they’ll put up with being on such sub-par teams.
I have to pick a 6th man—Omri Casspi. His numbers are good, he’s a worker, and he’s blazing a trail.
Players to watch "Europe Rising" vs "They could be awesome"
Marc Gasol, Jonas Jerebko, Ersan Ilyasova, Rodrigue Beaubois, Omri Casspi
OR
Anthony Randolph, Thad Young, Johnny Flynn, Joakim Noah, Marcus Thornton

I know Israel isn't part of Europe,
fine, “Internationals rising” then

israel
The Israeli league is affiliated with the EuroLeague, so it’s a part of Europe in terms of sports. http://www.euroleague.net/uleb/domestic-leagues/domestic-leagues-2007-2008/israel
That "Europe Rising" team is pretty much what I had suggested under the last wingcast :)
Only with Sefolosha at SG, and either Jerebko as the lesser-known or Casspi at SF.
Ceterum censeo Lakers esse delendam
I agree that Sergio Rodriguez's game is better suited for Europe.
I, however, also think that Jerryd Bayless’ game is better suited for Rucker Park.
Dear Paul Allen:
Fire Nate McMillan & hire Jeff Van Gundy.
Sincerely,

Here's some Benspeak to turn green...
Here’s my one suggestion…
Play hard. Play with pride. Play for the city of Portland.
That’s all we ask.
If you guys suck, but you played hard, no one’s going to hold it against you. You know what I mean? That’s been a trait of the Blazers going back 40 years — if you’re a hard-working player you will get your name up like Lloyd Neal, you’ll get your name raised in the rafters with your jersey retired. All you have to do is wreck your knee from playing hard and you will be an all-time legend here as a Blazer. But people do not EVER put up with players loafing.
The Blazers’ fans were booing last week, they were booing the team’s effort — you heard it during the Memphis game. * * *
The one thing that needs to happen, from the top down, Brandon Roy included — YOU NEED TO BRING SOLID EFFORT. Getting booed off your home court in November is not a good look. Blazer fans do not stand for that.
Amen.

Martell Fernandez...
Classic, but now I wouldn’t be surprised to hear an ESPN reporter erroneously state that in a game recap or box score.
Keep the Wingcasts coming, I dig them and it gives me something to listen to at work. Thank you KP and Ben.
Trout's the missing chem piece
He’s the reason Brandon never went a little haywire before. Just guessing here, but I’d love it if we could get Trout back in the locker room.

Ben's draft board revelation
At the 45 minute of the podcast, Ben said that “a source close to the draft board team allowed me access to the Blazers’ preliminary draft board for 2010 and more than half the names on the top of the draft board were power forwards. So, call it a coincidence…but i would suspect that’s the most-convincing information I’ve seen yet that makes me believe that Travis Outlaw will be done as a Blazer at the end of this year. Because of the injury he’s not going to be tradeable and they’re going to et him walk at the end of the year.”And they’ll replace him with a combination of Dante, Pendergraph and another cheap rookie 4."
This is one prediction that I hope Ben gets wrong. Because to let an asset like TO just “walk away” at the end of his 6 year Blazer career would be a travesty. It’s no way to run a ballclub
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
It's really flimsy evidence that Outlaw is on his way out
I don’t expect him back but saying a draft board filled with power forwards in a draft filled with power forwards is a sign that Outlaw will walk is a gigantic leap.

I'm sick of all these Dean Demopolis fanboys screaming for Nates's head
better evidence, to me
was KP’s pursuit of Hedo and Millsap last July. If either had been signed, Travis was gonzo

True. DraftExpress has about 18 guys in the top 30 who while not pure PFs can play the position decently.

Oh and players to watch.
1. Oden
2. Oden
3. Oden
4. Sergio
5. Oden
Roy’s still the best player on the Blazers, but I’d love for that to change without Roy getting worse.

Swell podcast
I sent my list to blazersedge @ gmail
I also liked Martell Fernandez
What Timbo pointed out was nice as well.
I think after listening to this podcast and reading Dave’s post, that maybe Miller should start. He’s a whiner who is willing to go to the national media if he doesn’t start and with Dave’s idea of getting Oden going first, Miller starting kind of makes sense for once.
"This isn’t making staples, where you’re just making staples." - KP
My 5:
Russell Westbook – insanely fun to watch, one of the best young PGs in the league.
Monta Ellis – threat to go for 40 on any given night. Steal machine, 5rbs, 5asts to go along with it.
Josh Smith – thank you for helping me wrap up blocks every week
Marc Gasol – thank you for helping Josh Smith help me wrap up blocks every week.
Gerald Wallace – cleans the glass, always has a knack for being around the ball, but could stand to shoot a little higher percentage.
I go to law school. Therefore, I have no life.
I'm gonna go the intriguing route
1. Lamar Odom – any dude who ties the knot after 3 weeks to a woman who is only famous for being the sister who is famous for being a daughter and having a large and shapely derriere is definitely intriguing. My money says that he will be the subject of many more tabloids in the upcoming season. Due to the fact that they got married so soon, I will speculate that Odom has some All Star level shower presence, and that being married to Khloe has gotten him to not whine about his role on the team.
2. Ron Artest – I hate to add another Laker to the list, but right now he is the most relevant colorful personality that could blow up at any second. His dynamic on the team will surely be tested when the season is nearing a close.
3. Marko Jaric – how can this guy
nab Adrianna Lima? I mean c’mon…hes not even an elite talent at the NBA level and has crooked face with beedy eyes. That porno stache is so 80s.
As far as surprises go
4. Brandon Jennings
5. Joakim Noah
Cloudy is Sergio. Makes other people look good, can’t score himself. -Cablinasian
Greg Postertag is probably wielding a jack hammer of a Wenis - AK1984
The 5
C: The new Nazr Mohammed – Great looking jumper, effective on the boards and blocking shots. A quintessential Larry Brown player.
PF: Craig Smith – The oft overlooked power 6’6"er, that thrives underneath the hoop on pure hustle.
SF: Smart Jason Richardson – Not to be confused with the Jason Richardson of old. This guy gives the ball up when he doesn’t have a wide open look or hasn’t gotten himself in an easy position to finish. He even attempts defense on occasion.
SG: Ronnie Brewer – Always the last guy you think of when you talk about the Jazz. Great defender solid finishing ability, interesting and rare fit in the Jerry Sloan system.
PG: Darren Collison – In Paul’s absence Collison has played admirably. A great defensive player and complete if basic offensive player, He’s can be a flash, but doesn’t live off that speed like most guys of his type do.
RSS or XML feed for the podcast?
Ben — Any chance there is a non-Itunes method of subscribing, such as an RSS or XML feed. Casey has this setup with the trailblazers.com podcasts and it’s nice, because I don’t have to start up Itunes everytime a new episode is released. Keep up the good work :)
