the worst part though was the next to last day we were there

we went to the waterpark they had where I got to swim with some dolphins, but my feet got sunburned. that ish sucked!!!

by Starvin' Marvin on Nov 9, 2009 9:53 PM PST up reply actions

I went on a rafting trip once, wearing sandals for the first day. I used a ton of waterproof sunscreen.

It washed off.

That night at camp, in the dark, I stepped on a fire ant mound.

The next day I crammed my feet into the only pair of sneakers I had, and we set off to finish the river trip. I wouldn’t get home for another 18 hours. I was too terrified to take my shoes off, for fear that I wouldn’t be able to put shoes back on.

When I finally got home, and took my shoes off, the tops of my feet were solid blisters in between where the straps of my sandals were. I had to miss a week of work, because I couldn’t wear shoes, and I can’t wear sandals at my job. By boss thought I was being a wuss, so I put on my sandals one day and went into the shop.

My boss almost puked.

I feel ya

I went innertubing on the Salt River outside Phoenix… didnt take enough sunscreen.. 6 hours on the water.. we drank so much we didnt even notice the pain.. the car ride home and the next few days were awful..
however not as bad as..

my buddies and I did a vegas trip. stay out all night drinking. Well one guy got WAY too wasted and barely made it back to his hotel around 5 am. Unfortunately he didnt have the key. This was in April so it was still hot at night, so he decided to sleep/pass out by the pool in a pool chair.. it was hot so he didnt wear a shirt. We woke him up around 12 when we got up. He had been sitting there for 6 hours of sunlight with no sunscreen in 105 degree weather passed out. He had to move like frankenstein with his arms up so they didnt touch anything, and couldnt lay down. So he had to sit straight up, not touching anything and watching TV for the next two days till we went home. We brought him food, and on the last night he tried to go out, we went to that club in the wynn and he got bumped a bunch and was almost tearing up so we dragged him out and sent him home.

He is fantasy trouble from inconsistency

At Kansas he was the best player in the country the night KU beat #1 Florida (returning champions) in Las Vegas. All year he was so good in many games then do something so immature you would be amazed he is even in college.

I remember a terrific steal and a breakaway at Nebraska on national TV when he tried to do a windmill and lost the ball backwards on the way up. He then proceeded to lie on the floor pretending to be hurt. The ref looked at Bill Self and the coach just shrugged and waited until he got up by himself and came back to the bench. The rest of the team was dying with laughter because his act fooled nobody!

He has the tools to do anything he wants. He just is not consistent.

Sure, the Wolves are awful on O, but the Warriors have really been getting after it on D, playing very hard. With Minny on a road b-2-b and the Dubs coming off two embarrassing losses, this one was ripe for a blowout… but this is ridiculous. 140 puts is very much in play.

Right click on the page where you choose a game or on the game

page itself, choose settings, then click on the display icon and disable the radio button for “Enable Hardware Acceleration”. I have no idea what hardware acceleration is. It does seem better but I don’t think that’s the complete fix for us. We’re considering looking into a cable connection because Hubby hates slow connections even more than I do. We’re fairly rural here so I don’t know what our options will be but I doubt wifi is one of them.

If I was Donnie Walsh, I’d try to pair that with a mid-season trade of Chris Duhon to Memphis for Allen Iverson and Steven Hunter — as well as Jared Jeffries and Wilson Chandler to Sacramento for Kenny Thomas — and, in turn, head into the off-season looking to sign LeBron James, do a sign-and-trade with Phoenix whereby Eddy Curry, Jordan Hill, and Toney Douglas are dealt for Amar’e Stoudemire, and finally acquire the draft rights of Ricky Rubio for future unprotected first-round draft picks in 2012, 2014, and 2016.

It’s got some interesting places, and there’s a big university life (three unis downtown), but overall it’s a bit depressing, they’re trying the whole reinvent-the-city from industrial center to vibrant, modern architecture city but they’re halfway there. And the weather is a wee bit horrible.

Where have you lived that you would like to go back to visit or live? Banff, BC. Too many other places all over Europe. Buenos Aires is pretty nice.

Where have you lived or been that you never want to see again? Lagos, Nigeria. I think their tourism division has designed their Wikipedia page. Completely fake/wrong. Google Images paints a more accurate picture. I don’t think I would want to live in Taipeh again either. Or other cities with that much humidity and smog.

Where do you still want to go: New Zealand

What NBA city is the least desirable place to live? Detroit (center), Houston (crime), LA (much of it), Cleveland (at least we’re not Detroit), …

What NBA city[besides Portland] would be the most desirable? Vancouver. What, no NBA city? You fail, David Stern. Then maybe Toronto.

Meh, ULC wanted terribly to get his point across that Jerryd Bayless is making some kind of impact.

Regarding accuracy, ULC is known for stretching the truth — or flat-out lying — to get across his biased viewpoints concerning Bayless.

Heck, here’s an example of that.

http://www.blazersedge.com/2009/5/8/869091/the-season-in-review-jerryd-bayless#15453090

As I’ve openly mentioned before here, I’m a Bayless hater. I dislike his style of play, pure and simple. I, however, admit my bias, which is the biggest difference between ULC and myself. Remember, honesty is the best policy.

Until ULC comes to terms and openly admits that he’s a giddy Bayless fan boy, I suggest that everyone ignores his comments on this topic.

Yeah, 768k is fine. a 20k photo should be a flash.

It’s especially weird that a bandwidth test site (which does a file upload as a test) works and regular sites don’t. If one works, the other should, and vice versa.

I’m half asleep so I’m stumped, at least not without looking at it directly. All I’ve got tonight is a reminder to try a few other files (perhaps the 20k file is corrupt?) or try a few other sites.

If the dog lets me sleep tonight, I’ll see if I’m thinking clearer in the morning.

Who wants to read a sad story?

The state budget here is junk so they got furlough Fridays where there is no school two Friday’s a month. On the first furlough Friday, a lady from my wife’s work took her 9 year old son to work. They told her she can’t do that, but she did it the next furlough Friday, so they put a note in her record but did not write her up.

Last Friday, was another furlough Friday and the lady had to come into work for a couple of hours, so she left her son at home alone. When she got home, she found him in the bathroom. He committed suicide by hanging himself with his karate gi belt.

How does a state gov't prudently cutting budget costs directly coincide with a kid committing suicide?

At best, someone could string together an indirect correlation between the two — which you did do here in a twisted, convoluted manner — yet, truth be told, the wholly separate acts have nothing to do with each other from a substantive standpoint.

I guess that, well, it irks me greatly whenever people use someone’s death — whether it was brought about on purpose (e.g., suicide) or caused by accident — as a means to try and prove a point. It’s unethical, really.

Something was obviously going on with the kid. It just created an unfortunate set of circumstances where the mother was left leaving her 9 year old at home alone on a Friday, when he should have been in school. He could have just as easily done something when she went to get the mail on Saturday.

Graphically I think it works well on either....just the online experience Microsoft gives you is way better

You pay 40 bucks a year for the online service vs. free for PS3, but it’s well worth it.

PS3 suffers from disconnections, unintuitive ways to play with friends/chat/“party up”, etc…..

I’ve played on both….PS3 just isn’t quite up to par with 360 right now.

I've played a few...mostly LAN though.

I just always liked flopping down on the couch with a controller more than sitting at a desk (whether it be mouse/keyboard or joystick/controller)…plus you can buy a 300 dollar console that plays insane games…versus paying $1000+ for a good gaming computer

My life has a superb cast, but I can't figure out the plot. --Woody Paige

by prezofdeath on Nov 10, 2009 10:01 AM PST up reply actions

The cost angle is a good one—The industry as a whole is shifting away from computers towards consoles and phones. Piracy is a lot harder via consoles, but it can be done.

The ability to hit hot keys, control your mouse sensitivity, etc is a real advantage with computers.

by EvilKaramazov on Nov 10, 2009 10:04 AM PST up reply actions

The hot keys/mouse sensitivity/etc is what I actually hate

I am such a…crybaby….when it comes to having things totally fair. I want a level playing field…on a console, everyone has the SAME controller, there’s no hot keys and geeks who cheat (with the exception of a few modders)….it’s just you and your machine gun vs. the other guy and his machine gun.

That’s also why I love LAN parties—when “lag” is taken out of the equation, it really is a true test of one players’ skill and cunning vs. another’s.

Where have you lived or been that you never want to see again? Toppenish, WA. It’s only a couple of thousand people, but has a big DEA office. You do the math. (or maybe the meth)

What NBA city is the least desirable place to live? Detroit, with OKC coming in a close second.

What NBA city[besides Portland] would be the most desirable? SLC is cool, and I could enjoy Miami, but I’ll go with San Antonio. Vancouver would win instantly if it had not been screwed by Mr. Stern.

Four criminals are caught and are to be punished. The Judge allows them to be freed if they can solve a puzzle. If they do not, they will be hung. They agreed.

The four criminals are lined up on some steps (shown in picture). They are all facing in the same direction. A wall separates the fourth man from the other three.

To summarize:
Man 1 can see men 2 and 3.
Man 2 can see man 3.
Man 3 can see none of the others.
Man 4 can see none of the others.

The criminals are wearing hats. They are told that there are two white hats and two black hats. The men initially don’t know what color is the hat they are wearing. They are told to shout out the color of the hat that they are wearing as soon as they know for certain what color it is.

They are not allowed to turn round or move.
They are not allowed to talk to each other.
They are not allowed to take their hats off.

Who is the first person to shout out and why?

Another Hat Riddle

The three wisest sages in the land were brought before the king to see which of them were worthy to become the king’s advisor. After passing many tests of cunning and invention, they were pitted against each other in a final battle of the wits. Led blind-folded into a small room, the sages were seated around a small wooden table as the king described the test for them.

“Upon each of your heads I have placed a hat. Now you are either wearing a blue hat or a white hat. All I will tell you is this- at least one of you is wearing a blue hat. There may be only one blue hat and two white hats, there may be two blue hats and one white hat, or there may be three blue hats. But you may be certain that there are not three white hats.”

“I will shortly remove your blind folds, and the test will begin. The first to correctly announce the color of his hat shall be my advisor. Be warned however, he who guesses wrongly shall be beheaded. If not one of you answers within the hour, you will be sent home and I will seek elsewhere for wisdom.” With that, the king uncovered the sages’ eyes and sat in the corner and waited. One sage looked around and saw that his competitors each were wearing blue hats. He could also tell that his opponents were just as confused as he was, and for several long minutes no one spoke.

Finally he stood up and said, “The color of the hat I am wearing is . . .”
What color was the sage’s hat and how was he able to determine this?

by EvilKaramazov on Nov 10, 2009 12:59 PM PST up reply actions

blue

there’s two blue hats, once they figure it’s not 3 cuz of the white hat, then it’s two. so each one would figure out that it’s blue cuz no one spoke. two people see blue, one see white.

i think that’s the only possibility to this weird riddle since you would only sit around in silence if there were 3 blue hats

by broyposse on Nov 10, 2009 12:59 PM PST up reply actions

Very good. You can reinforce this logic with the second qualifier—No all white hats. If you saw one white and one blue, you would have no idea as to your hat—but one of the others would see your hat and the presumably one of the white ones. Which leads to the obvious—If you saw two white, you would know instantly that yours was blue. So the only way for everyone to be stumped, is for everyone to be blue.

by EvilKaramazov on Nov 10, 2009 1:04 PM PST up reply actions

ya that last sentence was a big key

but at the same time i am not 100% confident

Senior Asian ambassador of Blazers Edge

by Philthyanimal on Nov 10, 2009 1:08 PM PST up reply actions

you could have confusion with two blues and one white but the logic still stands:

Suppose you were looking at 1 white, 1 blue. The guy in the blue hat would either see two whites or white and blue. If he saw two whites, he would declare himself blue. Since he doesn’t you know you are blue. In this situation, the guy in white doesn’t know anything.

by EvilKaramazov on Nov 10, 2009 1:11 PM PST up reply actions

I like this one better than the other riddle, cause in that only #2 had a chance. In this riddle, everyone is on equal footing, which makes the premise of the riddle that much better. The other riddle was founded on a biased judge.

by The Arkitect on Nov 10, 2009 2:46 PM PST up reply actions

I didn't read any one else's answer

He’s wearing a blue hat.

Because no other sage shouts out an answer quickly we immediately know there is either 1 or 0 white hats. If there were 2 white hats the sage who could see those hats would instantly know the answer.

Let’s assume the sage in question is wearing a white hat. From the point of view of another sage, there would be 1 white hat and 1 blue hat. That other sage would know that initial silence means he’s not wearing a white hate (see point above) meaning he is wearing a blue hat. Any sage seeing 1 white hat and 1 blue hat (and no immediate declaration from another sage who saw 2 white hats and knew he must be wearing blue) would know he is wearing a blue hat, therefore, he would be able to answer within a short time.

The Sage in question must be wearing a blue hat because no other sage has enough evidence to conclude his hat color in a short amount of time. The long silence and confusion lets us know.

This is a joke, but that’s nothing new for gold glove voting, which is a far bigger joke than e.g. NBA all-star voting. Its been clearly shown that hitting more helps someone in winning a gold glove. Yadier Molina, generally accepted to be the league’s best defensive catcher, didn’t start winning gold gloves until he started hitting.

Check out Portland’s own Rob Neyer’s take on the subject.

If he’s on the radio, he’ll always make a controversial statement. They’ll even sometimes be accurate.

by Timmay! on Nov 10, 2009 1:29 PM PST up reply actions

I think Quick is a good beat writer

He’s bad at predicting front office moves and things like that, but let’s remember that he turned out to be pretty correct to talk about Oden’s mood— Oden wasn’t seeing a sports psychologist for nothing. I think its highly likely Brandon is showing signs of displeasure. Quick is often wrong when analyzing e.g. front office moves, but he doesn’t just make things up like Canzano sometimes seems to.

by jksnake99 on Nov 10, 2009 1:30 PM PST up reply actions

I do agree that Quick has a Canseco-esque quality of being obnoxious while having a high correct %.

However, this statement about Brandon is useless without some detail or perspective. It’s just a way to create angst as a standalone statement.

Bumper list of Windows 7 secrets

Maximum PC’s Windows Tweaks and tips. There’s some repeats in here (and multiple pages, argh), but it’s got some good stuff. The calibration of text rendering is great.

Random note: If you use codec packs for videos, you largely don’t need them in Windows 7. It plays most video files by default, which is a huge improvement from Microsoft (I’m used to running FFDShow and Haali splitter). The major exceptions are Blu-Ray (it still needs 3rd party software) and MKV (you can install the free Divx MKV splitter to fix that). If you have good video card, it’ll even use hardware acceleration to play some newer (h.264) files and Blu-Ray.

Today would be a good day to scrap the 3 guard lineup

I agree with Dwight’s latest post.

Miller guarding Conley/Mayo? potential trouble.
Blake guarding Conley/Mayo? trouble.
Roy guarding Gay? Potential trouble. Roy might actually have to try on defense.

This would be a good time to bench Blake and start Webster, or Rudy if Nate insists on staying small.

She's the next

Shania Twain or Faith Hill…

more talented them both of these artist combined

by broyposse on Nov 10, 2009 2:43 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah but talent doesn't equal success

Leanne Rimes never reached the level of success everyone predicted. A fair part of the reason Twain and Hill were so successful was unrelated to their innate talent.

I like the Debbie Gibson example. She’s very, very talented, shone bright for a short time in the mainstream music industry, then as she faded she became successful in areas like Broadway instead.

It’s so hard to predict where Taylor will go.

She needs a few more successful albums under her belt

It’s so early to see where her career path is going. The aforementioned personal stuff is a good example of what can happen.

It feels like yesterday she was on SNL for the first time, performing while holding a guitar but not playing it. It seemed to be there to keep her hands distracted, so she wouldn’t chew her nails due to nerves. She did so at the end anyway.

It made her much more human than a lot of rising stars.

and she really does sing her heart out. But if you were to compare her to Christina Aguillera, or Jessica Simpson she is not in the same league. I do think she is better than Britney, or Ashley Simpson in singing, but her talent is probably more in songwriting than in singing itself. It’s okay, that’s true for the majority of singer/songwriters who have had popular success. That said, I do not really listen to any of those mentioned on a regular basis, so this observation is based on what I have heard when I have happened to hear it. Maybe the sample size is too small, idk…

I'm a bit worried Marc will use a series of craft pump fakes to get him in foul trouble.

If Oden plays as poised on offense as he did the last two games, and the Grizz guards ignore Marc, he should have a very good game.

by GreatOden'sRaven on Nov 10, 2009 2:17 PM PST up reply actions

i agree but the best pump faker is Al Jefferson and

it looked like GO watched some game tape.

i also think he plays better when he has a better opponent.

LMA needs to watch out for the 2nd best pump faker, Ztat Bo

by broyposse on Nov 10, 2009 2:14 PM PST up reply actions

Al Jeff made Anthony Randolph look silly on pump fakes twice last night

Not that it mattered since Minny gave up 146, of course. GO did a nice job staying down on the pump fakes for sure.

by jksnake99 on Nov 10, 2009 2:15 PM PST up reply actions

GO's handling of both Duncan and Jefferson was a big surprise

He got in foul trouble early on TD but worked out of it.

I still think Oden will get more slack on defense when he scores more on offense. Seems like a ref tradition.

by Timmay! on Nov 10, 2009 2:16 PM PST up reply actions

and he'll never make all-defense until he scores more

Have now played through the single-player mission in Modern Warfare 2

All in all I didn’t like it better than COD4, but about the same. I didn’t feel like the missions were as long or strategic (on the second-highest level), though the enemy AI seems smarter going after you. Very good graphics, and nice terrain, and a few vehicle specials that were nice but easy. Haven’t really played a lot of the arcade “bonus” stuff yet. And no multiplayer so far, will get to that maybe on the weekend or a bit later.

Anyone know if the xbox 360 version is better than the Windows version?

I prefer mouse and keyboard over game controller on FPS, but some games are specifically made for controllers so the keyboard isn’t as useful.

by Timmay! on Nov 10, 2009 2:31 PM PST up reply actions

Agreed; I don’t believe in FPS for console.

by EvilKaramazov on Nov 10, 2009 2:32 PM PST up reply actions

I think it's definitely worth it, especially if you are into the multiplayer stuff for "replayability"

I usually focus more on the single player missions with most games, but I think I will play that game quite a lot online when I have more time. COD quickly dominated that.

From the trailers, I thought the Russian separatist/terrorist would play a larger role than he did, and sometimes it gets a bit confusing with who does what, but all in all the story is solid and the scenarios are interesting.

For the 2nd question (for those that actually read the post)

I am tempted to say that I never wish to see Everett, WA again but that is mainly because of the crappy apartment I had while I was there. When my wife and I looked at apartments last we stumbled onto a complex that had the exact same floorplan as my Everett pad; I almost turned right around and said “Thanks, but no thanks” just because of that.

I doubt there is a rift and that is a really stupid example to prove that there is not

I doubt any of the players are mad at each other. They all just want to know their role.

agreed. It’s annoying that Barrett feels that it is his job to make sure the fans know that EVERYTHING IS OKAY DO NOT PANIC.

I thought Jake was making a Malik Sealy joke in the open thread then I realized he was talking about Gerald Wallace

Did you know Gerald Wallace was the inspiration for the character Elijah Price, in the movie Unbreakable?

Injuries are impossible to predict

Last week I would have sworn on Tayshaun Prince, now he has a ruptured disk. T.J. Ford or Wallace might be paralyzed in a month, or have a longer career than Steve Blake who could step on a foot and break his ankle despite playing it safe any minute.

But slowly things happen that they cannot help and the Blazers Fellowship of the Ring begins to break apart
