NOV 9 JD - WHAT CAME FIRST???

There are 9032 eggs in a basket taken from 843 chickens over a period of 12 years. One chicken has 8 feathers, four other chickens have 20 feathers, while the rest have 2190 feathers. 2 of the chickens are also missing their right leg while four others are missing their left. The weather outside was frightful at a freezing temperature, with chill factor, of negative 23 degrees Fahrenheit. The time of the day was 2:13 pm in West Philly. You take 236 eggs out of the basket. 66 of the eggs you took were purple, 53 were green, 24 were orange, and 93 were pink. Jonny's favorite food is pancakes. If he had the chance he would eat pancakes every single morning before he went to school. In fact, Jonny feeds his dog waffles when his mom makes those instead cause he hate waffles and his mom won't listen to him every time he asks her to make pancakes. If Sally takes 280 eggs and smashes them, then Ramone takes 112 eggs and throws them at a house, and Jonny takes 55 and cooks them, how many eggs do the chickens lay each day?

Application for Taco Bell marketing position

The first thing I’d do if I had a job as a marketer for TB, is to replace that lame generic guy with Jack Black. It’s genius. He’s funny to some, its supposed to be a Black Jack taco and hes Jack Black, and he can do some kinda lame Nacho Libre character.

Thanks Tom! I'm being selective in the threads I open. It 'tis a gem!

The world would be simpler if everybody thought like me. The world would also suck and soon crumble from its lack of vision. I don’t understand how anyone can talk to people for any length of time and not get that. You lose the joy of discovery, wonder, learning, and real companionship. But apparently each of us being grand king of our own little world is more important. The sad thing is, the way we’ve set the kingdom up nobody will care. When facts are simple and they’re all about me, who’s left that matters?

I'm thinking we need to all take turns

Or make our own RSS feed.
I bet there is about a dozen of us who would do it. We can have one person a day, take one for the team, and read all the fanposts and tell us if anything is worth reading.
Jake and Mortimer are always mixing things up, we can ask them to point out good stuff. Norks kind of does that with fanposts.

Hahaha

I did a fantasy league on Yahoo before the Bedge one just to practice drafting…haven’t touched my guy all year, I’m in 9th of 10th place.

Guess who’s in 10th? The guy who’s scored the MOST points out of anyone in our league. I went through and looked at the matchups, and he’s been consistently scoring 100, but every week someone scores 105 on him. The week I played him, my team put up 107 points and I don’t even have a defense or kicker.

The 2nd place guy has 735 and is 6-2. This guy in dead last with 799 points and a 1-7 record.

From wiki

The Times once published an unintentionally humorous description of a Peter Ustinov documentary, noting that “highlights of his global tour include encounters with Nelson Mandela, an 800-year-old demigod and a dildo collector”.17 This is ambiguous as it stands, and would still be ambiguous if a serial comma were added, as Mandela could then be mistaken for a demigod.

Iverson is allegedly thinking about retirement

That would be a nice retirement package, $1 million for each game he played for the Grizzlies. Though I would suppose the NBA would demand some of it back, and/or the Grizzlies would trade him as an expiring contract after December 15th.

The owner allowed him to leave

But potentially he might get suspended for the rest of the season if he doesn’t return, a la Jason Williams last year. So no team could then pick him up for the playoffs.

Could be what his Wizards stint did to "improve" MJ's legacy

He should have probably signed with the Bobcats. Getting into the playoffs with his old coach could work in the East. And it’s not like Felton and Augustin are playing all-world at the moment.

I continually cycle between 6 and 7 since early summer when I first moved into stage 6.

I think. I think I’m more likely to regress to 6 than step up to 8 when I get tired. But maybe it’d be worth getting 8 over so I can enter the terminal stage.

I “met” someone in an entirely different kind of on-line forum (for a music band) who started making comments in the off-topic discussion area of that site about being excited for the NBA season to start so she could finally see her favorite basketball player, Rudy Fernandez, play for her new favorite NBA team.

Of course, I had only just joined BE myself and didn’t know enough not to say ‘come on down to BE’. So i did. Since then there have been a couple of other people who I will point to stories on BE if I know they are trying to understand more about something, but no other BEdgers were created to my knowledge.

Has anyone went over to Canus Poopus and read their game recap??

Ol Stop ‘n’ Poop implied that he was hoping one of our guys would get injured and then accuses the Blazers of piling on

I’ll never hope an injury on anyone but this was one of those games where you were kind of hoping Jawai or Brian Cardinal would have put someone trying a 3 while up by nearly 30 on their back. Perhaps the Wolves aren’t even at that level of play. Maybe there’s nothing long term for the majority of these guys to protect. Whatever the case, here’s hoping someone remembers what kind of crap was put out there last night and does something to change it when they get the chance with a better surrounding cast somewhere way, way, way down the line…

And a perception that the Blazers were trying to embarass them is pretty wrong, as Timbo points out with the game flow

http://popcornmachine.net/cgi-bin/gameflow.cgi?date=20091108&game=MINPOR

No starter but Blake (who didn’t score again) played after the 3rd quarter. And as Dave pointed out in his recap, of course all the guys not getting regular minutes finally did try to take the chance and show the coach that they should play more.

We definitely weren't running up the score

I’ve seen us run up the score, against the Grizz, Bulls, Nuggets, Thunder… we don’t let up.

We let up big time. It’s just that (not to sound cocky) our backups are better than most of their starters. It’s kinda hard to ask players trying to get playing time to not play— and they didn’t do much anyways.

He saw what he wanted to see and already decided what he was going to get mad about— us being poor sports as fans and as a team if we win.

Dante Cunnighman is still a 4/3 to me, with no ability to play the 3 in the high/low zone offense.

Yet, if Cunningham can mix his Brandon Bass/Antonio McDyess pick-and-pop offense with Luc Richard Mbah a Moute defense, then I support him getting backup 4 minutes this season over Travis Outlaw and Juwan Howard — with the former being a good-for-nothing defender/rebounder and the latter being an over-the-hill, washed-up has-been — until a much-needed upgrade is acquired at that spot.

I would agree that a super-high-end starting 4 players is better than 2 great starters and then 8 mediocre guys

Problem is, every team in the league thinks that way and doesn’t let its stars go for nothing. Of course having a Paul or Parker or Granger or Wallace or Butler would be nice, but teams don’t do that for our rotation guys that we want to consolidate. The Wizards and Suns couldn’t even agree if an Amare for Jamison + pieces would be fair, and talks broke down when Kerr defined pieces as “Butler”. And even if free agency, the only guys deserving of a superstar label to change teams in recent years were Nash, Shaq, and T-Mac.

Exactly

I think we got two A-players in Oden and Roy (with Oden being a potentially A-player), and a good B in LMA.

If we can move a few of the C-players for a B, shoot, sign me up.

If we trade a C for another C with the same problems, or causes us to lose some depth… what’s the point?

I don't know about far better. A little better.

Those Suns teams were about average on D. So far this year, we’re a little above average. We need a lot more on D from LMA and Roy.

by jksnake99 on Nov 9, 2009 10:33 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I think those Suns teams numbers are a lil' skewed

I got NO evidence to back this up, and I know the defensive efficiency ratings have them as a strong middle of the pack type team defensively during the D’Antoni era.

But I see that as other teams struggling when trying to play the Suns style of basketball, and then missing shots or having bad turnovers, in an attempt to keep up with the Suns. In a way, their fastbreak up tempo style forced the other team’s offense to break down to match it. Their offense was their defense.

Because they really didn’t seem like good defenders at all… Nash and Amare well deserve their defensive reps, Raja was good but sorta overrated… I dunno.

by Mortimer on Nov 9, 2009 10:42 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Do yo see us struggling playing teams with uptempo styles? We struggled against GS last year when we played their pace. Do you think we’d have a hard time with this Suns team? —They stretch the floor really well (frye on the arc) in addition to playing quick.

by EvilKaramazov on Nov 9, 2009 10:49 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

in a perfect world

Portland would be able to change their playing style depending on who they play.

Against the Spurs they would play an up-tempo style, but against the Suns they would slow it down, get the ball to Oden or LMA and force Frye to guard one of them.

Who knows if they will be able to do that though.

It doesn't REALLY matter in the end

But the Suns can’t really be said to be a good defensive squad with 2 good-to-great defenders, when I think their style caused the defensive efficiency to be decent.

It really doesn’t matter though, it’s just a curious thought I had.

They were built to win in the playoffs as long as they didn’t face an inside threat. The Mavs didn’t have that, only the Spurs did.

With Batum we handle the perimeter dudes better, and we can only hope in the future Roy keeps his focus defensively and that we have a team defense to handle the quick dudes.

I don’t worry about us handling post presences, which is what usually wins in the playoffs.

I watched a suns game recently

I was goofing off in the JD a lot, but the Suns could do nothing but foul D Howard. Frye never came below the 3 point line on offense. They lost that game. The Blazers, Lakers, Cavs, Spurs, Jazz, Nugs, and Celtics would all beat the Suns in 7 games.

by tominhawaii on Nov 9, 2009 12:22 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

And that's the thing

The bad teams get beat bad and can’t keep up with the Suns and make the defensive efficiency look okay, but the good teams don’t give in to the Suns style and beat them up inside.

ANYONE with a post presence will beat them.

Oden isn’t a consistent, dominant post presence yet, so maybe they beat us still if they’re hot.

Sort of

Assuming things stay the way they are, the PTB seems to be enjoying the faster pace. Defense wins championships, but the PTB’s painfully methodical style of play wasn’t enough either. I think the guys appreciate the reigns being loosened and it will pay dividends.

Is tempo really that important?

To me is seems that teams that are successful in the playoffs and beyond do a couple of things well:
- Rebound (check)
- Protect the rim on defense (check?)
- Score near the rim (check?)
- Are efficient on offense (check)

The last two are pretty similar, but being able to score near the rim gets you foul shots (good) and enables you to not play drive and kick offense all night long.

Question:

I light of some of the above comments about our team, and in keeping with Darkstar’s post I like to put out the following:

In basketball, the team that can consistently score more easy buckets than the opponent leads to the greatest and most consistent success (championship).

I’m phrasing this different than what I would normally suggest: Defense leads to the greatest and most consistent success.

by EvilKaramazov on Nov 9, 2009 11:09 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

I think that it matters how you define "easy buckets"

Is that layups in transition? Or is a dunk off an offensive rebound also an easy bucket?

by tingeyga on Nov 9, 2009 11:11 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, exactly, this is the sticking point in my statement. Layup in transition, dunk off an offensive rebound, points in the paint, free throws—I would classify those as all easy buckets.

by EvilKaramazov on Nov 9, 2009 11:17 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Gray areas, I’d say, no, based upon FG% alone.

by EvilKaramazov on Nov 9, 2009 11:19 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I think that there is a lot of truth to how you put it

It seems clear that the “defense wins championships” statement is incomplete as you need to be able to score as well.

Here is what I have said about winning championships (this is basically the same as I said a couple of comments above, but I like channeling AK:

Here is my take on what it takes to win a championship
Rebounding, defense and being able to get some scoring from the post.

If you look at the Bulls titles and most (all?) of the so called exceptions to the "dominant post player" rule, they had those things. The Bulls were a good rebounding team and played excellent defense, and were able to get post scoring out of Jordan (Tex Winter often said that Jordan was in essence the premier post weapon of his time)

So perhaps the Jordan teams weren’t exceptions to the championship formula in that they had all of the ingredients, they simply got them from different positions than is/was typical.

Yes, I think that ’s right.

I’m looking for what I would call a first principle—something from which we could explain all forms of consistent winning. It would also be something we could call true, and build on. I think the above statement, and the statement “Defense wins” both would fall under what I suggested about easy buckets. I think the second question, from my first statement would be: given any roster, what is the best avenue for first principle (this would highlight coaching philosophy’s—I think this years suns and last years suns would be a great case study).

what is better to try and score more easy buckets or try to prevent easy buckets?

by tingeyga on Nov 9, 2009 11:51 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly, the first principle would be have more easy buckets than opponents. One could then argue give no easy buckets (Spurs, Detroit); or simple get more easy bukets (Suns, this season’s Denver)

by EvilKaramazov on Nov 9, 2009 11:54 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I think the Suns would be an interesting case

because my impression is that part of the reason they are so successful is because they shoot a lot of 3s. Hollinger wrote an article last season about how the number of 3s attempted correlated more strongly with win% than did 3pt%, which was odd.

So the question is, do the Suns shoot more 3s than typical because they shoot them instead of 15-footers or because teams try and stop their easy buckets, thus opening them up for the 3 ball.

by tingeyga on Nov 9, 2009 12:15 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Interesting. I was thinking more along the lines of how the Shaq and change in philosophy didn’t work given their personal. You could be on to something with them though.

Here is the Hollinger article

Link

It is interesting in light of D’Antoni’s default response when adversity struck was to play faster, to shoot more threes. But when Kerr came in they brought in Grant Hill (noted more for his mid-range game than his 3 point shooting) and Shaq, to try and be more like the other teams instead of trying to be more different

In light of the success of the three-guard system, I am advocating a move to the four-guard system. I base this on the observation that not too long ago, most razors had two blades, but now it is impossible to buy one with fewer than eight. Therefore, more guards, improved play, bigs are just in the way, and the ultimate destination of the NBA is that there will fail to be a player over the height of 6’6" by December 12th, 2012.
