NOV 9 JD - WHAT CAME FIRST???
There are 9032 eggs in a basket taken from 843 chickens over a period of 12 years. One chicken has 8 feathers, four other chickens have 20 feathers, while the rest have 2190 feathers. 2 of the chickens are also missing their right leg while four others are missing their left. The weather outside was frightful at a freezing temperature, with chill factor, of negative 23 degrees Fahrenheit. The time of the day was 2:13 pm in West Philly. You take 236 eggs out of the basket. 66 of the eggs you took were purple, 53 were green, 24 were orange, and 93 were pink. Jonny's favorite food is pancakes. If he had the chance he would eat pancakes every single morning before he went to school. In fact, Jonny feeds his dog waffles when his mom makes those instead cause he hate waffles and his mom won't listen to him every time he asks her to make pancakes. If Sally takes 280 eggs and smashes them, then Ramone takes 112 eggs and throws them at a house, and Jonny takes 55 and cooks them, how many eggs do the chickens lay each day?

The world would be simpler if everybody thought like me. The world would also suck and soon crumble from its lack of vision. I don’t understand how anyone can talk to people for any length of time and not get that. You lose the joy of discovery, wonder, learning, and real companionship. But apparently each of us being grand king of our own little world is more important. The sad thing is, the way we’ve set the kingdom up nobody will care. When facts are simple and they’re all about me, who’s left that matters?

So, the moral of the story is that I’m always right?
I'm thinking we need to all take turns
Or make our own RSS feed.
I bet there is about a dozen of us who would do it. We can have one person a day, take one for the team, and read all the fanposts and tell us if anything is worth reading.
Jake and Mortimer are always mixing things up, we can ask them to point out good stuff. Norks kind of does that with fanposts.
I just checked the sidebar
Two fanposts have 2 recs, nothing but JD’s with more recs than that. That’s not counting the top 5.
we should just get 7 people and some alternates
assign a person a day
alternates swoop in if the designated person is AWOL
You have an extra space before Miller and one after Outlaw
You also have a question in the beginning without a question mark.

I did a fantasy league on Yahoo before the Bedge one just to practice drafting…haven’t touched my guy all year, I’m in 9th of 10th place.
Guess who’s in 10th? The guy who’s scored the MOST points out of anyone in our league. I went through and looked at the matchups, and he’s been consistently scoring 100, but every week someone scores 105 on him. The week I played him, my team put up 107 points and I don’t even have a defense or kicker.
The 2nd place guy has 735 and is 6-2. This guy in dead last with 799 points and a 1-7 record.

From wiki
The Times once published an unintentionally humorous description of a Peter Ustinov documentary, noting that “highlights of his global tour include encounters with Nelson Mandela, an 800-year-old demigod and a dildo collector”.17 This is ambiguous as it stands, and would still be ambiguous if a serial comma were added, as Mandela could then be mistaken for a demigod.

Iverson is allegedly thinking about retirement
That would be a nice retirement package, $1 million for each game he played for the Grizzlies. Though I would suppose the NBA would demand some of it back, and/or the Grizzlies would trade him as an expiring contract after December 15th.
But slowly things happen that they cannot help and the Blazers Fellowship of the Ring begins to break apart
The owner allowed him to leave
But potentially he might get suspended for the rest of the season if he doesn’t return, a la Jason Williams last year. So no team could then pick him up for the playoffs.
But slowly things happen that they cannot help and the Blazers Fellowship of the Ring begins to break apart
Could be what his Wizards stint did to "improve" MJ's legacy
He should have probably signed with the Bobcats. Getting into the playoffs with his old coach could work in the East. And it’s not like Felton and Augustin are playing all-world at the moment.

I don’t think it would keep him out of the hall of fame if he is going to go in it, I just don’t like his last two stops. I think he turned off a lot of people. MJ, just looked old, Iverson looks like a baby.

""..Sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own . . . "
Stages of Blazers Edge
The following are the normal stages of Blazers Edge. However, there are always anomalies such as the "Join, never comment, but post lots of FanPosts" and trolls. My research department worked for two years compiling data and studying the behavior of so called "BEdgers." The stages are not all encompassing and many people chose to stay on one step and never proceed to the next one. Others skip may skip a step or two.
Stage 1: Discovery
Normally a person finds Blazers Edge from a link or referral from friends. Others have found their way to Blazers Edge through web searches and through radio referrals.
Stage 2: Lurking
Upon discovering Blazers Edge, the person does not know if he or she should comment. Some dive right in, but most wait until a subject touches them or a comment pisses them off. (There is a small contingency of people who chose to write an introductory FanPost in this stage and do not lurk at all. They often go from Stage 1 to Stage 4 in a matter of hours.)
Stage 3: Finding a Comfort Zone
In this stage the reader tries to find his or her strengths and weaknesses. Are they a stat person, a homer, a ref blamer, a coach hater, a joker, a homer hater, a naysayer, a contrarian, a Ben or Dave wannabe, etc.
Stage 4: Wow, People Respond to Me
This stage is characterized by posters responding just about every mainpage post and FanPost. Some stick to the mainpage and respond to just about every comment in that post. This stage normally only lasts a short period of time because the poster either grows tired of repeating him or herself and having their words manipulated or they turn into a troll and get banned.
Stage 5: Settling In
In this stage other posters become familiar with the new poster. Depending on their status, other may or may not look forward to reading their response to a post or comment. They might post a few FanPosts or FanShots. Posting FanPosts can actually happen at any stage. Some posters like to be the first to break new, others want to share their opinion, and some feel they have been a member long enough to try to calm folks down.
Stage 6: Scaling Back
In this stage, some people retreat to the Junk Drawer, others lurk, and others take a BEdgecation. The end of the season naturally created a BEdgecation for many. Sometimes folks retreat to just mainpage posts, take a week off or weekend off, or take a month long hiatus where they may or may not lurk.
Stage 7: Reemergence
Posters in this stage get the itch again and feel the need to scratch it on Blazers Edge. They might be timid at first, or jump right back in like they never left.
Stage 8: Screw This Place!
In this stage the poster gets fed up, sometimes with Dave, Ben, or the moderators but most often with the other posters. Most folks take another BEdgecation, some write angry e-mail to Dave, Ben, & the moderators and others write a "Screw This Place!" Fanpost which results in their post getting deleted, followed by them getting banned.
Stage 9: I got Nowhere Else to Go
In this stage the poster realized that every other option for Blazers news and camaraderie sucks, so they suck it up and rejoin Blazers Edge.

That was just off the top off my head at work. It’s mostly my stages but I was trying to be inclusive.
I continually cycle between 6 and 7 since early summer when I first moved into stage 6.
I think. I think I’m more likely to regress to 6 than step up to 8 when I get tired. But maybe it’d be worth getting 8 over so I can enter the terminal stage.

Just over a year ago
I “met” someone in an entirely different kind of on-line forum (for a music band) who started making comments in the off-topic discussion area of that site about being excited for the NBA season to start so she could finally see her favorite basketball player, Rudy Fernandez, play for her new favorite NBA team.
Of course, I had only just joined BE myself and didn’t know enough not to say ‘come on down to BE’. So i did. Since then there have been a couple of other people who I will point to stories on BE if I know they are trying to understand more about something, but no other BEdgers were created to my knowledge.

Ol Stop ‘n’ Poop implied that he was hoping one of our guys would get injured and then accuses the Blazers of piling on
I’ll never hope an injury on anyone but this was one of those games where you were kind of hoping Jawai or Brian Cardinal would have put someone trying a 3 while up by nearly 30 on their back. Perhaps the Wolves aren’t even at that level of play. Maybe there’s nothing long term for the majority of these guys to protect. Whatever the case, here’s hoping someone remembers what kind of crap was put out there last night and does something to change it when they get the chance with a better surrounding cast somewhere way, way, way down the line…

Bill Simmons, who's an imbecile, probably likes Al Jefferson because he was once a Celtic.

We definitely weren't running up the score
I’ve seen us run up the score, against the Grizz, Bulls, Nuggets, Thunder… we don’t let up.
We let up big time. It’s just that (not to sound cocky) our backups are better than most of their starters. It’s kinda hard to ask players trying to get playing time to not play— and they didn’t do much anyways.
He saw what he wanted to see and already decided what he was going to get mad about— us being poor sports as fans and as a team if we win.

Dante Cunnighman is still a 4/3 to me, with no ability to play the 3 in the high/low zone offense.
Yet, if Cunningham can mix his Brandon Bass/Antonio McDyess pick-and-pop offense with Luc Richard Mbah a Moute defense, then I support him getting backup 4 minutes this season over Travis Outlaw and Juwan Howard — with the former being a good-for-nothing defender/rebounder and the latter being an over-the-hill, washed-up has-been — until a much-needed upgrade is acquired at that spot.

I would agree that a super-high-end starting 4 players is better than 2 great starters and then 8 mediocre guys
Problem is, every team in the league thinks that way and doesn’t let its stars go for nothing. Of course having a Paul or Parker or Granger or Wallace or Butler would be nice, but teams don’t do that for our rotation guys that we want to consolidate. The Wizards and Suns couldn’t even agree if an Amare for Jamison + pieces would be fair, and talks broke down when Kerr defined pieces as “Butler”. And even if free agency, the only guys deserving of a superstar label to change teams in recent years were Nash, Shaq, and T-Mac.
But slowly things happen that they cannot help and the Blazers Fellowship of the Ring begins to break apart
Exactly
I think we got two A-players in Oden and Roy (with Oden being a potentially A-player), and a good B in LMA.
If we can move a few of the C-players for a B, shoot, sign me up.
If we trade a C for another C with the same problems, or causes us to lose some depth… what’s the point?
Except for your favorite C or B player on another team

and that’s where we have the 00s Suns beat. Portland’s interior D is far better than any of those teams
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
2008 Civil War: Oregon 65 - Oregon State 38
I don't know about far better. A little better.
Those Suns teams were about average on D. So far this year, we’re a little above average. We need a lot more on D from LMA and Roy.
I think those Suns teams numbers are a lil' skewed
I got NO evidence to back this up, and I know the defensive efficiency ratings have them as a strong middle of the pack type team defensively during the D’Antoni era.
But I see that as other teams struggling when trying to play the Suns style of basketball, and then missing shots or having bad turnovers, in an attempt to keep up with the Suns. In a way, their fastbreak up tempo style forced the other team’s offense to break down to match it. Their offense was their defense.
Because they really didn’t seem like good defenders at all… Nash and Amare well deserve their defensive reps, Raja was good but sorta overrated… I dunno.
Do yo see us struggling playing teams with uptempo styles? We struggled against GS last year when we played their pace. Do you think we’d have a hard time with this Suns team? —They stretch the floor really well (frye on the arc) in addition to playing quick.
by EvilKaramazov on Nov 9, 2009 10:49 AM PST up reply actions
in a perfect world
Portland would be able to change their playing style depending on who they play.
Against the Spurs they would play an up-tempo style, but against the Suns they would slow it down, get the ball to Oden or LMA and force Frye to guard one of them.
Who knows if they will be able to do that though.
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"

Our struggles in Dubland aside
We’ve often, with this current Roy-led team, made the fast team play our pace. I hope we can do that again.
Marion was a tremendous 3/4 defender and Bell was excellent also
but in the end, even if you are right, does it matter what caused other teams to miss shots?
That Suns team was built to win in the playoffs… except against the Spurs.
who played D on Duncan during those series?
Marion or Stoudemire?

2008 Civil War: Oregon 65 - Oregon State 38
I don't really remember
The Suns couldn’t stop him to save their lives. He was their nightmare matchup. The year they had Kurt Thomas was the year they came the closest.
It doesn't REALLY matter in the end
But the Suns can’t really be said to be a good defensive squad with 2 good-to-great defenders, when I think their style caused the defensive efficiency to be decent.
It really doesn’t matter though, it’s just a curious thought I had.
They were built to win in the playoffs as long as they didn’t face an inside threat. The Mavs didn’t have that, only the Spurs did.
but Portland, hypothetically, could handle both
teams with an inside threat, or teams without one…
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
2008 Civil War: Oregon 65 - Oregon State 38
I agree
With Batum we handle the perimeter dudes better, and we can only hope in the future Roy keeps his focus defensively and that we have a team defense to handle the quick dudes.
I don’t worry about us handling post presences, which is what usually wins in the playoffs.
yeah we have enough interior D, just with Oden and Przy now
and Oden still has a ton of room to grow, both on offense and defense
"Your best?!?!! Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and &^%@ the prom queen"
2008 Civil War: Oregon 65 - Oregon State 38

That Suns team was built to win in the playoffs… except against the Spurs.
I watched a suns game recently
I was goofing off in the JD a lot, but the Suns could do nothing but foul D Howard. Frye never came below the 3 point line on offense. They lost that game. The Blazers, Lakers, Cavs, Spurs, Jazz, Nugs, and Celtics would all beat the Suns in 7 games.
And that's the thing
The bad teams get beat bad and can’t keep up with the Suns and make the defensive efficiency look okay, but the good teams don’t give in to the Suns style and beat them up inside.
ANYONE with a post presence will beat them.
Oden isn’t a consistent, dominant post presence yet, so maybe they beat us still if they’re hot.
Sort of
Assuming things stay the way they are, the PTB seems to be enjoying the faster pace. Defense wins championships, but the PTB’s painfully methodical style of play wasn’t enough either. I think the guys appreciate the reigns being loosened and it will pay dividends.
" Well...Game is ugly and Dave from BlazersEdge is not all that funny."-- saudagg of cAnus hoopis
Is tempo really that important?
To me is seems that teams that are successful in the playoffs and beyond do a couple of things well:
- Rebound (check)
- Protect the rim on defense (check?)
- Score near the rim (check?)
- Are efficient on offense (check)
The last two are pretty similar, but being able to score near the rim gets you foul shots (good) and enables you to not play drive and kick offense all night long.
that's funny.

Question:
I light of some of the above comments about our team, and in keeping with Darkstar’s post I like to put out the following:
In basketball, the team that can consistently score more easy buckets than the opponent leads to the greatest and most consistent success (championship).
I’m phrasing this different than what I would normally suggest: Defense leads to the greatest and most consistent success.
I think that it matters how you define "easy buckets"
Is that layups in transition? Or is a dunk off an offensive rebound also an easy bucket?
Yes, exactly, this is the sticking point in my statement. Layup in transition, dunk off an offensive rebound, points in the paint, free throws—I would classify those as all easy buckets.
by EvilKaramazov on Nov 9, 2009 11:17 AM PST up reply actions
Gray areas, I’d say, no, based upon FG% alone.
by EvilKaramazov on Nov 9, 2009 11:19 AM PST up reply actions
I think that there is a lot of truth to how you put it
It seems clear that the “defense wins championships” statement is incomplete as you need to be able to score as well.
Here is what I have said about winning championships (this is basically the same as I said a couple of comments above, but I like channeling AK:
Here is my take on what it takes to win a championship
Rebounding, defense and being able to get some scoring from the post.
If you look at the Bulls titles and most (all?) of the so called exceptions to the "dominant post player" rule, they had those things. The Bulls were a good rebounding team and played excellent defense, and were able to get post scoring out of Jordan (Tex Winter often said that Jordan was in essence the premier post weapon of his time)
So perhaps the Jordan teams weren’t exceptions to the championship formula in that they had all of the ingredients, they simply got them from different positions than is/was typical.
Yes, I think that ’s right.
I’m looking for what I would call a first principle—something from which we could explain all forms of consistent winning. It would also be something we could call true, and build on. I think the above statement, and the statement “Defense wins” both would fall under what I suggested about easy buckets. I think the second question, from my first statement would be: given any roster, what is the best avenue for first principle (this would highlight coaching philosophy’s—I think this years suns and last years suns would be a great case study).
by EvilKaramazov on Nov 9, 2009 11:49 AM PST up reply actions
Exactly, the first principle would be have more easy buckets than opponents. One could then argue give no easy buckets (Spurs, Detroit); or simple get more easy bukets (Suns, this season’s Denver)
by EvilKaramazov on Nov 9, 2009 11:54 AM PST up reply actions
I think the Suns would be an interesting case
because my impression is that part of the reason they are so successful is because they shoot a lot of 3s. Hollinger wrote an article last season about how the number of 3s attempted correlated more strongly with win% than did 3pt%, which was odd.
So the question is, do the Suns shoot more 3s than typical because they shoot them instead of 15-footers or because teams try and stop their easy buckets, thus opening them up for the 3 ball.
Interesting. I was thinking more along the lines of how the Shaq and change in philosophy didn’t work given their personal. You could be on to something with them though.
by EvilKaramazov on Nov 9, 2009 12:18 PM PST up reply actions
Here is the Hollinger article
It is interesting in light of D’Antoni’s default response when adversity struck was to play faster, to shoot more threes. But when Kerr came in they brought in Grant Hill (noted more for his mid-range game than his 3 point shooting) and Shaq, to try and be more like the other teams instead of trying to be more different
i think it works bc it goes against convential wisdom
kinda like whoever posted that link here about the football team that never punts on 4th down. they get an extra down to try to get the 1st down, and that the net field position gained is roughly 20 yards at that age level.

In light of the success of the three-guard system, I am advocating a move to the four-guard system. I base this on the observation that not too long ago, most razors had two blades, but now it is impossible to buy one with fewer than eight. Therefore, more guards, improved play, bigs are just in the way, and the ultimate destination of the NBA is that there will fail to be a player over the height of 6’6" by December 12th, 2012.

They only lay 0.00245 eggs per day on average.
(12 years)(365 days/yr)=4380 days total
9032 total eggs/4380 days=2.062 eggs/day
2.062 eggs/day/843 chickens=0.00245 eggs/day/chicken

I think I think I know why Blake and Miller start together
It’s not for Nate to prove he was right to start Blake, it’s not to make the transition to a backup easier for Blake, it’s a little of the ball handling and a lot of Blake getting used to playing like Miller so Blake can do with the second unit what Miller was too pouty to do with the second unit. I think it’s training for Blake.
I hear you but I still think its crazy for Blake to play twice as many minutes as Rudy.
by southern oregon on Nov 9, 2009 2:23 PM PST up reply actions
I'm not
Rudy has been playing like $%#tard. It’s like he came back and said, “Ah, so the coach trusts me now, I must impress him with my ability to be a half-A$$ed Brandon Roy, and take the most difficult fade away jumper possible.”
The whole point of having a deep team is having players earn their minutes. The only guy I think is getting squeezed is Martell.

Recommendation: McGrady told Yahoo! Sports that he plans on returning to the Rockets’ lineup against the Timberwolves on Nov. 18. His return should hurt Trevor Ariza and Aaron Brooks’ fantasy stock some, but McGrady’s injury history begs the question of how long his return will last this time.

San Antonio, for example, may sign Tracy McGrady next summer to replace Michael ...
Finley, who’s on his last legs and might retire after this season. McGrady would be suited for a role player gig on the ever-contending Spurs, since he can start at shooting guard — for Manu Ginobili will almost assuredly be re-signed in 2010 to continue filling the team’s sixth man spot — and, moreover, “T-Mac” could earn himself some backup small forward minutes behind Richard Jefferson.

For one thing, I don’t see Daryl Morey wanting an inefficient wing player like Wilson Chandler — especially since the Rockets would most likely need to absorb Jared Jeffries and Larry Hughes, too, although releasing Brian Cook and waiving Pops Mensah-Bonsu beforehand wouldn’t hurt the team — thus, I’d scratch that idea.
Dear Paul Allen:
Fire Nate McMillan & hire Jeff Van Gundy.
Sincerely,

So I’ve had this recurring problem with my lower legs. After I really pivot and run around a lot, I start to get shooting pain in my lower calf/ankle area. It is generally on my left leg, but if I battle through it it will eventually end up affecting both legs.

I took a month off from running to hopefully have it heal up, but today was the second day of playing again and the darn thing is coming back.
At eleven or twelve, I had heel problems and the doc said that I had short calf tendons that were causing problems. That’s the only past history I have with my lower legs.
Any ideas of what is going on? Any help is really appreciated.

which is really failure of the gastrocs (calf mm) and underlying mm (soleus) to fire properly and act like a shock absorber for the impact of running…deep massage in the calf is needed…painful but helpful….also responds well to increase in potassium, vitamin C and pantothenic acid (B5)

It is interesting to see
how LMA’s stats improve over the course of the season….every year.
"I'm a man, but I can change.....if I have to......I guess." - Red Green
yeah, those two have blocked every available shot
There have been no situations where LMA failed to rotate and challenge a shot.
In some situations
I’d rather have LMA bolting for his basket as soon as he sees a player going in to challenge Greg or Joel. That way he can be the recipient of a long Miller outlet.
I get the paper, so I don't care!
that's fair
Its just annoying to see a list of some truly terrible interior defenders ahead of him in this category— including some who play on teams that love to have their big men run the floor.
exactly, jksnake, exactly
Oden and Joel are just too good at blocking shots. They should stop being so selfish and let Aldridge get a few.

being fined if you don't have insurance
i’ll admit i don’t read up on this much, but here is my understanding of the issue.
they are requiring that all people must be insured, and that if you aren’t insured that you will be fined. they are also requiring that insurance companies cannot deny people coverage for past issues.
as long as the fine isnt large, wouldnt it be best to not have insurance, and say when you have cancer then sign up…and pay the fine and get treated then cancel insurance again?
the equivilant would be waiting till you got in a car accident until you bought car insurance.

depends on how far he falls.
If he falls to ~33-35%, no. He is now a career 35% shooter, by the way.
They look like a team with staying power to me, at least for the regular season. I think they get at least the 7 seed, possibly a couple spots higher.
And they are going to get Lopez back which gives them a a solid big rotation
by southern oregon on Nov 9, 2009 4:40 PM PST up reply actions
yeah, I'm interested in how well Lopez will do
He can rebound and defend as well as his brother, at least he could in college. He isn’t a great fit for them, though, because he can’t shoot and he’s a little bit of a “lumberer.” I like him and want him to do well though.
how much longer will lopez be out?

Channing will start even when Lopez returns.
which should be soon.
I’m not even sure Lopez will be ahead of Amundson in the rotation.
Sixers open up a 9 point lead.
Suns at worst will have a 3-2 Eastern road trip with impressive wins over Washington, Miami and Boston, the only loss to Orlando. A great trip. A win vs. Philly would make it phenomenal.
i wonder if Kerr gets a lot of heat
for trying to turn the Suns into a defensive team and running Dantoni out of town, and then going back to SSOL 1/2 a season later.

i'm not sure if it was this story

Do you even know what a cancer is, DTL?
Cancer (medical term: malignant neoplasm) is a class of diseases in which a group of cells display uncontrolled growth (division beyond the normal limits), invasion (intrusion on and destruction of adjacent tissues), and sometimes metastasis (spread to other locations in the body via lymph or blood.)
So, what this means is that, DTL, is that I love you; I just think you are dividing beyond normal limits and that you may metastasize if we do not excise you.

Thank you for your cooperation.
Just remember: it’s not you, it’s us. I’m actually preparing an interview.
First of all, DTL is a great kid and we appreciate everything he has done. He’s been an amazing part of this turnaround, so I want to compliment him and honor that. That’s the biggest thing. But I felt like, and we all felt like, it was DTL’s time. He struggled with his role. I don’t think there’s a doubt about that. We never faulted DTL for wanting to comment more, we want guys to comment. We had a lot of conversations, Arkitect and I had conversations with him at the end of the year. It was just his time.
"oh dear god. Please be more irresponsible". - Claire
Yeah, I mean, I hate to go. They just said I didn’t fit well with the team, that I “struggled with my role”. I never felt that way. I came to comment every day. And I did my best to comment to the best of my ability and try and improve in the ways they wanted me to improve. Every day I was there, willing to do what they needed me to do. Every day. But, I guess they just felt it wasn’t enough. It’s disappointing, but it’s a business, what can I do? I’ll just have to move on and comment the best I can somewhere else.
Blazers make the Fans, Fans don't make the Blazers--broyposse
