Homer junk 11/7/8

This has been educational getting used to other teams homer announcers

Star-divide

For example I got the Utah feed for the beat down at home by the mighty Kings, hahahah. So far the Boston mouthpieces seem to be overall the worst but its still not a complete sample.

Who do you think has it together as an announcer and who is your least favorite[hate is such a strong word]?

The Grizz homers[have no shame?] are very delicatly dancing around the Iverson tumor and the fact that they are up by 5 on the road at half with out HIM

I like the Suns and and Mavs guys, love Clyde but  he is pretty poor as a talking head,as far as the net work guys Hubie and Van Gundy are pretty good most of the other ones are repeating the same obvious thing that they said before.Feel free to discuss the local homers

When I lived in Phx, I remember strongly disliking Boston's announcers.

The Phx crew is okay (well, Majerle is okay), and the Bulls guys are good. Golden State also.

So, I probably missed the boat on this conversation

but what happens when Greg stops getting in foul trouble? 14, 8 and 4 blocks going against Duncan is more than okay.

by Magnum on Nov 7, 2009 9:26 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

i'm sure someone knows actual projections and stuff

but if he played without foul trouble I’d imagine 15-10 3 blocks isn’t unreasonable.

Yes, and that is for this season

He is still very raw and will be a much better Oden in the future.

If he can just get them dag blasted fouls under control, he could do 15/10+/2 purty easy.

why do you hate AI so much?

I love watching him play.

But yes, he’s a terrible fit for the Grizz, who have enough scorers— including several who are more efficient than Iverson at this stage of his career.

by jksnake99 on Nov 7, 2009 9:33 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I can see where you are coming from, for sure, but I've always appreciated his effort on the court and his desire to win.

I wouldn’t say he didn’t play D— he always played his heart out and got a lot of steals. However, he was always overrated as a player since he wasn’t all that efficient and gambled way too much on D.

only if the original shooter gets it back for the garbage putback. It’s a more specialized Iverson assist.

The game is listed twice with a H and an A next to it.

by tominhawaii on Nov 7, 2009 11:58 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

It's an option on the full League Pass.

On one of the empty channels, there are games listed twice, once with (H), once with (A). Not all games, they don’t have enough channels (on my system at least).

If the game you’re watching does have two channels, that’s your choice of Home and Away broadcasts.

Like Jake, I don’t know if BB has that option.

In the SportCenter recap of the Spurs game the only showing of Oden was him getting posterised by Jefferson.

The dialogue hasn’t shifted from disappointing to up and coming yet.

I remember that

It was nice to hear and pretty much all justified.

Just wish that SportsCenter had shown the 3 blocks in the 4th or one of the two great moves he made on Duncan rather than just the one instance where RJ got an open lane and threw it down on him (I was actually happy GO didn’t try to challenge the dunk – already had 4 fouls).

Favourite quote’s from Hubie Brown in the 4th Q – “Oden is playing great defense, not good defense, great defense” and when he mention Greg was playing intelligent D – that was music to my ears.

Some of the plays people are saying were really LMA...

…Hubie was talking about the Oden intimidation factor, that guys didn’t wanna challenge him. For one, at the same time Jefferson didn’t challenge because Oden was there, LMA stripped the ball.

I loved that Hubie was so gushing about Oden. I’ve always liked Hubie and he’s a very smart announcer, so that was cool.

I was happy when I saw who was announcing the game… so glad we weren’t subjected to an idiotic former player.

The Knicks have Mike Breen (ESPN play by play guy) along with Clyde Frazier (who not everyone likes but I really like); The Nets sometimes have Marv Albert and Mike Fratello— which is basically a dream team for a local broadcast. Even their #2 team of Ian Eagle and Jim Spanarkel is really good.

  1. rule for Female Waits: Don’t be a biatch and card the male when drinks are ordered and not the female.

I happen to look much younger than my age so this has happened on more than a few occasions. Ladies, you know damned well it’s very insulting to another woman to purposely indicate that she looks older than the man she is with so stop doing that. If you run into me and pull that crap something like the following is what will happen:

ME (not loudly): “I want an experienced waitress instead of you. I do not want an apology, a manager, or a discount, just have someone else start taking care of us immediately”

Have fun explaining to your manager why someone else needs to service our table. Do your catty crap on your own time, not mine.

Yeah, he is.

He’s demolished everyone he’s ever fought.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueria, who currently fights in the UFC, lost to Fedor 3 times. Crocop got beat by him. He’s also beaten guys 150 lbs heavier than him. He beat Andre Arlovski in 1 minute, same with Tim Sylvia. He submitted Matt Lindland. He’s just a freak.

What’s funny is that he looks like L-Train’s big brother that just woke up from a nap.

but teams really need to get better about handling concussions, and if they don’t, the NCAA/NFL/etc. need to step up. Now Best would have been hurt on that play regardless, but he had suffered a concussion the week before. I’m sure he was cleared, but with brain injuries I’d like to see more caution. by tominhawaii on Nov 8, 2009 2:14 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Sounds like I agree with that Entine guy

Some people would say that there are no fast, good white running backs because they just don’t care about football as much as black people.

Which I think is MUCH more racist than just admitting that some groups of people are genetically gifted. It’s also dumb.

To me, there is no discrimination conspiracy going on against whites in the NBA or NFL or anywhere… especially in the NBA, the league would love a real marketable white American star. And a white GOOD running back would be very popular… yes, based on their race, because even just subconsciously people are a lil’ racist with whom they like to root for… in my opinion.

Some of it is “rooting for the underdog” (which, in a way, is admitting that a white athlete is usually not equal to their black counterparts, because they are the underdog), some of it is they just stand out. It’s not necessarily because someone is a racist jerk and hates black athletes…

There is a reason that the majority of athletes of the sports that require explosive speed and athleticism are one specific ethnicity. And like I always say, there is nothing wrong with that. Making fake excuses for why that is the way it is is sooo much worse to me.

Entine authored the book “Taboo: Why Black Athletes Dominate Sports And Why We’re Afraid To Talk About It.” In the book, Entine makes the link between genetics, geography and sports dominance.
He suggests athletes with West African ancestors — which would encompass a large percentage of African-Americans — dominate sports requiring speed and jumping because of the body types and other physical characteristics that are typical of people from that region.
“Once the population designations were set,” Entine said, “there are real differences in the gene frequencies in the east and west African population, which is quite different from populations around the world.”
“I don’t think it’s anything to bemoan because that doesn’t discredit the efforts of the African-Americans who have become great tailbacks, or great sprinters,” he said. “They’re all individuals. They’re competing with a vast number of others and they’re succeeding because of their hard work, their intelligence, all of the things that make great athletes. All their genetic endowment does is give them an opportunity to compete at a high level. As long as we don’t lose sight of the individual and try to understand the pattern then I think we’re OK about this stuff. The danger is when we try to suggest that somehow great tailbacks run out of the womb, just because of their West African ancestry they’re destined for greatness.”

I think who it was coming from, and how unscientific and unverifiable it is to say that, made people angry

Chris Rock has said the exact same thing over and over, both as a joke and a serious statement, but it’s a better person to present that.

I think it would be silly to think that some slave owners, seeing the black slaves as a form of livestock, would not “breed” the biggest strongest people together. Or encourage it. Or buy slave children based upon their parents size and strength.

Though, I do not think it was happening a lot on purpose, and I don’t think African-Americans are so much better at sports because they were inadvertantly bred for it when they were slaves. I think they are just genetically more capable of creating that Uber-Athleticism that does best in NBA and NFL, for whatever the reasons are each region has created the physical differences in us hu-mans.

by Mortimer on Nov 8, 2009 2:37 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Well said

I think there is truth to it, I just don’t want to touch it because like you said, who knows what the percentages are.

by tominhawaii on Nov 8, 2009 2:41 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I have said that for years, and it’s really obvious from a physical perspective. Even among African people there is a difference. Nigeria has a ton of people well suited to be sprinters, Kenya has the same for endurance athletes. At some time, it just developed like that. The genetics, food, landscape, social values, etc. all have an influence on it, but in the end one group is muscular and the other is lean. And most black people in the Caribbean and the US came from the West African coastal states since that was the closest route. Blame slavery for it, but it’s just how it is.

The genetic difference for skin color and body types is tiny, but it exists.

But slowly things happen that they cannot help and the Blazers Fellowship of the Ring begins to break apart

"It's just how it is"

Yup, that’s my take on it.

It doesn’t mean ALL black people are good athletes, and no white person can be as good as a black athlete. Just gonna be a lot more common with one group, and a lot more rare for the other.

by Mortimer on Nov 8, 2009 2:39 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

That's a good question

Strawberry lemonade, grape soda, sweet tea, too much sugar in the kool aid… it’s just what they like. Super sweet and sugary crap that gives them diabetes.

I’ve noticed many Mexicans love the super sweet crap too.

Could be a cultural/socio-economical thing… super sweet sugary crap is cheap. Your young taste buds get used to it, and love it.

I dunno. From my experience as a waiter for a few years and with my former in-laws, yes— American blacks love overly sugary drinks in general.

by Mortimer on Nov 8, 2009 2:45 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Asians aren't so big on Americanish sweets

Their sweet are made with ginger and sesame seeds etc.

by tominhawaii on Nov 8, 2009 2:46 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

For example

There isn’t meant to be a negative statement… does anyone really think there will be an Asian athlete as big, strong, powerful, and quick as Lebron? Ever?

Some certainly as tall and big as him, but as quick/fast/strong/skilled?

I think most would have trouble picturing that happening. And would feel comfortable with that belief.

But, people get uncomfortable relinquishing the thought that black people from West Africa just might be better suited for sports that heavily rely on size and athleticism. Especially when it makes it so whites are genetically not as commonly capable for it.

Some just want everyone to be equal in every way, which is a noble belief but, as far as physicality goes, obviously untrue.

by Mortimer on Nov 8, 2009 2:42 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I am positive they are trying

Back when I did ROTC for a bit, an older intelligence officer swore to me he’s seen warehouses in China where government scientists genetically engineer Chinese people to be bigger and stronger. He adamantly swore to it.

And of course that old rumor that the Chinese government heavily encouraged the tallest dude on the boys team and the girls get married and have a boy who became Yao Ming…

China is shady that way, so I wouldn’t put it past them.

by Mortimer on Nov 8, 2009 2:48 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, it could happen

But their genetic dispositions make it super unlikely.

I don’t think it’s likely there will be another good Chinese player for a while, with Yao being successful for his true freak nature… so big and skilled. That isn’t common.

And it ain’t like there aren’t hundreds of millions of Chinese people playing and loving basketball. Doesn’t matter how secluded their region is, if a 6’8" super naturally buff 40 inch vertical athletic marvel exists, we will know about him soon.

by Mortimer on Nov 8, 2009 2:53 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I could pretty easily find you a Travis clone (in the US or Africa), long, lanky, big vert. If he would be more naturally skilled or eager to learn basketball is the million dollar question.

What makes LeBron pretty special is that he is bulky yet also super quick and pretty skilled. Finding a bulky white guy or a quick white guy is pretty easy, but all of it in one package is tough.

But slowly things happen that they cannot help and the Blazers Fellowship of the Ring begins to break apart

by Norsktroll on Nov 8, 2009 2:57 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly

That entire package is the key.

Everyone has tall people, big people, but the combination of that size and athleticism isn’t very common. Plus skill and all that.

ALL groups can learn the skills/naturally be good at the skills, and be eager to learn the game and love it, but most just don’t have the physical foundation to build upon.

Outlaw is a relatively common body type, and Lebron is a one of a kind body type. It’s just the perfect combo of size and fluid powerful athleticism.

Recently, according to Gerhart, one of his friends was playing an NCAA video game and created a player with Gerhart’s speed and dimensions (6-foot-2, 230 pounds, 4.43 in the 40-yard dash). When his friend made the player white, the game automatically described the video version of Gerhart as “power back.” When his friend changed the skin color to black, he became an “all-purpose back.”

Yet one has to say that it is on a re-branded secondary network station showing not much original content and that is brand new. Think TBS to TNT, and just launched. And I’m also not sure the humor would translate well, it’s very focused on US culture so a number of jokes will be hard to understand if you don’t know a lot about the US.

I record the show

I think it’s entertaining but I don’t think it’s must see TV.

Last season it was my favorite half hour sitcom-type comedy

Now that I watch It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, I like that more. And the new season of 30 Rock hasn’t had a good episode yet, sadly… especially a bummer because last season was really good.

I would think it wouldn’t translate well. Popular American comedian from a late night show not really watched overseas, starring in a show that is based on the backstage shenanigans of producing that late night show, with lots of pop culture American references and social commentary… I would think most wouldn’t like it outside America.

It just won the most Emmy’s ever for a comedy, though, so it’s done really well here.
