Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

JD 11-7-2k9: R.A.M.B.O=AWESOME

More after the jump

Star-divide

Fact: Prior to the season, the consensus for preferred starting lineup for the 'Zers was R.A.M.B.O. After Batum's surgery they resorted to R.A.W.B.O and went 2-3. By inserting Andre Miller into the lineup for Friday's game Nate created another R.A.M.B.O. combination and the Blazers won by their largest margin of the year.

Fact: Jerryd Bayless saw his first action of the year. The Blazers are 1-0 when Bayless plays. Thus the solution to all of the Blazers problems is more Baylessness (or less Baylesslessness if you prefer)

Based on the facts at hand, it is clear to see that if Nate will start Roy, Aldridge, Bayless, Miller and Oden, the Blazers will never loss a game again. It is so simple.

I just had a horrible zaching night. It was almost comedic how one bad thing kept happening to me after another.

Of course I’m still blessed to be in a warm house and have food in my fridge, so I really shouldn’t be complaining.

And I feel pretty smart for not freaking out over the ’Dre/Blake/Roy lineup.

Love.

Morti, you briefly mentioned Petteri in passing in the game-day thread

He has upped his minutes from 14 to 19, his points from 2.8 to 6.3, his TS% from 43 to 65%, his assists from 0.8 to 2.0, his rebounds from 1.1 to 2.0, and his TOs just by 0.1 to 1 in the first 3 games this season. That brings his PER from 5 to 17.5.

He still has a long ways to go to ever make it into the NBA, but as usual for young players with more minutes and experience his production and thus his trade value certainly is on the upswing :)

But slowly things happen that they cannot help and the Blazers Fellowship of the Ring begins to break apart

by Norsktroll on Nov 7, 2009 12:49 AM PST reply actions

Nice!

He clearly needed more time after we watched him in summer league, and after his one shooting game to start the league off he really seemed to get overrated even though he played pretty badly the rest of the way.

I liked it when we drafted him, I like his size, he moves well, but he just didn’t seem very good… at least not yet.

More time and more experience sounds great to me. I’m glad he’s getting more time and showing he can take advantage of it! I wouldn’t say I am down on his potential, but I won’t count on him being a NBA rotation player just yet like I think we can with Freeland.

Or Beno Udrih. But the tools to be something interesting are there, able to play both guard spots and also defend at least 1 position.

by Norsktroll on Nov 7, 2009 1:29 AM PST up reply actions

Speaking of Euro guards

Kevin Martin going down might be great for Sergio… it means they can move Tyreke to the SG spot, which is more his style anyways, and start Beno with Sergio off the bench for good minutes.

And then maybe Sergio gets the chance to outplay Beno and snag that starting role… would be sweet.

He put both of his hands on Jefferson's waist as he raised up for the dunk

Bad idea. Coulda’ got called for a cheapie foul.

The better Oden played, the more good blocks he got, the more the refs let him play and the more they will continue to play. Over time, Oden making the small adjustments needed to not get 1 or 2 dumb fouls called on him, and the refs respecting his rep more, will mean the foul problems aren’t such a problem no mo’.

The bump on Ginobli (no matter how slight it really was, that will usually get called a foul), the non-call with putting his hands on Jefferson on the dunk… Oden needs to be more aware. Go sideways and let Manu past and play at the rim. If smartly giving up on a play and letting a guy have the bucket, just get out of the way faster. Etc.

He is the only Trail Blazer who has been good every game.

That’s pretty cool.

Of course, the fouls, oh lordy me oh my, the fouls… if only they’d be under control, he’s an allstar. This year.

by Mortimer on Nov 7, 2009 1:43 AM PST up reply actions

not to be a downer here, but Oden has been statistically the 4th best 2nd year center this year.

and that’s per minute. Considering how much the fouls limit PT, that’s not ideal.

Today he played very well though.

Ah, Hibbert

One more, I can’t think of anyone…

by Mortimer on Nov 7, 2009 1:47 AM PST up reply actions

Marc has been the best of the 4, by the numbers

He’s not been the shotblocker that the other 3 (especially Oden) have been in the early going, though.

by jksnake99 on Nov 7, 2009 1:49 AM PST up reply actions

I'm glad Marc is getting touches and not being forgotten on that team

Yeah, his defense isn’t as good as the others… though Hibbert is a shotblocker, I’d say Marc is likely a better actual defender.

by Mortimer on Nov 7, 2009 1:50 AM PST up reply actions

haven't seen enough of Hibbert to judge that

To be fair to Oden, those 3 I mentioned have all been really good— so its not like he’s getting outplayed by some chumps.

It just happens to be a really good class— even though Oden and Marc weren’t part of the draft class— for Centers.

by jksnake99 on Nov 7, 2009 1:52 AM PST up reply actions

Hibbert just super slow and can be beat easy

His super height and length makes him a good shotblocker though.

He is a very stiff guy who, if he can be taught the basics, will be a good big. He is getting taught the basics, and will always be useful but very slow and stiff.

I’m just kidding, they don’t all suck. Curry will have some big scoring nights when he gets hot, Psycho T will be solid, when Griffin gets healthy and gets a chance to run he’ll have some awesome dunks and stuff, Tyreke will do some cool stuff… it isn’t all bad.

Just a sorta weak rookie class with no clear leader for ROY aside from Jennings right now. That’d be pretty surprising if he won, but it’d be cool.

by Mortimer on Nov 7, 2009 2:03 AM PST up reply actions

Marc can move and use his body

But he doesn’t really play other bigs as tough as he could, doesn’t challenge a lot of shots, and is still more like a Euro big on defense.

He knows what to do though, and I think he’ll be a good smart defender, but not like the others in actual defensive impact.

by Mortimer on Nov 7, 2009 1:56 AM PST up reply actions

Oh, Marcy Gasoline

Well that’s fine I guess.

Kaman statistically would deserve to be the backup center in the allstar game obviously, but I doubt he goes since the Clippers will suck.

It is all moot since I don’t see Oden getting the fouls under control that quickly, but if he does, his namebrandness and EASY double double and blocks and our subsequent good record if he does get his minutes under control would = allstar though.

by Mortimer on Nov 7, 2009 1:49 AM PST up reply actions

Was looking this up after hearing how well they all went tonight (Oden, Hibbert, Lopez)

The numbers aren’t in Oden’s favour but there is very little difference between these three plus Bynum if you look at per minute numbers.

Major difference is Oden is getting about half the shot attempts of the other three (justified – NJ and IND stink so need the offense and Bynum deserves the touches). Oden leads (?) in fouls and turnovers, not so great, but also has the best shooting percentages, defensive and total rebound rates and block rate.

Personally I think we are putting Oden in a tougher situation than last year – I haven’t seen any easy dunks this year from others driving and making the pass when doubled (perhaps because we aren’t driving!) and he doesn’t seem to be getting many tip ins which accounted for about a third of his points last year. I think things will improve for him as the team builds chemistry and starts playing more aggressive so long as he can reduce those fouls and turnovers and stay on the court.

BTW – I’m 100% sure he is the best post defensive guy in that bunch – D rating backs this up although I don’t like that stat much. Still pretty confident in his ability to lock down the paint – Not so much for the others

He’s only averaging a couple more mpg than Greg.

by jksnake99 on Nov 7, 2009 1:53 AM PST up reply actions

Hibbert also has big foul problems

He did last year anyways, so maybe that argument doesn’t hold water.

I do agree, oden will do better if he isn’t pulling himself out of the game with foul probs.

by Mortimer on Nov 7, 2009 1:53 AM PST up reply actions

I just looked at Hibberts numbers again

Hibbert has actually dropped his fouls/36 from 7.7 to 4.9, so that does’t explain why he’s only getting 26 mpg.

Would be nice to see Oden drop his foul rate down below 5 per 36.

The fear he would get very frustrated with his 6th DNP-CD in series? Probably not. That he knew how to play against George Hill from summer league? Not sure, as Ben pointed out Bayless wasn’t playing very good against him and had 7 TOs. A strong focus on 3-guard lineups?

If we had a superstar point guard I wouldn’t mind him guarding the gatorade, but since that’s not the case he should get some chances this season. No point guard looks good if he only gets thrown into blowouts, and I’m sure you could find games where any young player got outplayed by the vets. I also hate the “if he was any good he would get minutes from the veterans argument”. But that narrative, Nelson is right to play Moore over Randolph, VDN to play Hinrich over Rose, and the Cavs could have played Ricky Davis over a young LeBron.

by Mortimer on Nov 7, 2009 2:11 AM PST up reply actions

Boston and LA have much more claim to being a Mecca

Both for talent, championships, relevance, everything.

Even when the Knicks were getting beat by the Bulls in the ECF every year, they haven’t mattered in forever.

And I even LIKE the Knicks… but geez, who made them the Mecca?

by Mortimer on Nov 7, 2009 2:13 AM PST up reply actions

the Knicks are not the reason people consider NY the mecca

Its just the insane amount of players it has produced and the passion for bball there. And the fact that it is a large market.

by jksnake99 on Nov 7, 2009 2:14 AM PST up reply actions

But they call Madison Square Garden the Mecca

Yeah, lots of good players come from NY and California due to their size.

But it seems like they call MSG the mecca, not that the city has produced a lot of talent…

And really, the idea that LeBron has to be in NY to make the most out of his marketing opportunities is pretty 1980s.

I like this:
In the closing seconds of a game against Utah, Davis was one rebound short of his first career triple-double. In an effort to record that rebound, Davis deliberately missed a shot at his team’s own basket. Afterwards, he was fouled by Utah’s DeShawn Stevenson in retaliation for his perceived unsportsmanlike behavior, and was later fined by his own team.
