Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Open Threading through the Early Games - 11/06

On this fine anniversary of Brandon Roy's excellence, we have a sweet slate of NBA games.

Particular games of interest:

Phoenix @ Boston. Looks like a Phoenix loss with the interior advantage Boston has. Nash has played at a high level this season, though, so it should still be a fun matchup of offense vs. defense.

OKC @ Houston. This is a game I'll be viewing quite intently. The starless, tough Houston team against the star-driven, soft OKC Pseudosonics. Fun times. I like Houston to win this... defense is enough to beat the lower echelon of the conference, especially at home.

Cleveland @ NY. James in NY. Everyone freak out.

Denver @ Miami. Denver's early-season play has been fantastic, even with their sharpshooter suspended. I think they win this, despite being on the road. Wade and Melo is a fun matchup.

Toronto @ New Orleans. Are either of these teams for real? New Orleans' core three players have been excellent in the early season but suffer from Byron Scott stubbornly playing Bobby Brown. Chris Paul this year: 30 ppg, >75 TS%, 42 AST%, 54 shots made, 30 shots missed.

Let's get this Friday night of hoops started.

lol I'm not sure what Frank is doing

seems to me they would be much better off going small and having a lineup of Harris (or Alston in this case), Lee, CDR, Williams, and Lopez.

that’s a young team that has the potential to be pretty exciting. they’d have to really try to push the ball to make up for the size difference (starting a 6’6" Williams at the 4).

he still has more turnovers than assists. He has to improve upon that or he is just a super Kevin Martin. Nice player, not a cornerstone.

free bayless

by Cablinasian on Nov 6, 2009 4:26 PM PST up reply actions

he has more assists than turnovers thus far this year.

and his rebounding is very valuable for an SF.

He’s not really making shots so far this year though.

by jksnake99 on Nov 6, 2009 4:29 PM PST up reply actions

isn’t it you who tells me that a player improves the most in the first three years? I see no difference in Durant, except him turning the ball over less. His AST% has gone down.

free bayless

by Cablinasian on Nov 6, 2009 4:31 PM PST up reply actions

Rereading that first sentence, didn’t mean it quite that way. Just saying that we should be seeing more improvement from Durant in his third year.

free bayless

by Cablinasian on Nov 6, 2009 4:32 PM PST up reply actions

well, he's rebounding more but there's no improvement in his playmaking ability

The key is really his defense though. We need to track all the defensive metrics.

He’s not going to be LeBron, that’s for sure.

by jksnake99 on Nov 6, 2009 4:35 PM PST up reply actions

I’m not sure the key is defense. As Mort has said, playmaking is just crucial from the guy that has the ball in his hands.

Defense is important, though.

free bayless

by Cablinasian on Nov 6, 2009 4:37 PM PST up reply actions

I don't really agree with you and Mort on this one

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having a super efficient scorer like that. He’s not going to be a guy who can solely carry them like LeBron— they need some post guys and we don’t know how good Westbrook will be.

by jksnake99 on Nov 6, 2009 4:40 PM PST up reply actions

what separates Durant from Martin at this point? He’s a better rebounder, but he is also a SF who plays with Nenad Krstic.

He has to become a playmaker. Teams that win titles are led by playmakers at the wing.

I’m not saying Durant isn’t an incredible scorer. I just think he’s gotta focus a bit more on passing to be a really great player.

free bayless

by Cablinasian on Nov 6, 2009 4:42 PM PST up reply actions

I think rebounds and blocks are about it, right now.

Kevin Martin with rebounds and blocks would be a stud though.

by jksnake99 on Nov 6, 2009 4:45 PM PST up reply actions

I think blocks are really overrated. A lot of statistical analysis showed Camby to be a poor defender for the years that he led the league in blocks… that’s why the Nugs traded him. Dean Oliver is not dumb.

free bayless

by Cablinasian on Nov 6, 2009 4:50 PM PST up reply actions

yeah, I'm familiar with that analysis.

You have to admit that Durant has a lot more defensive tools than Martin though. We need to track his defensive metrics this season closely, but the possibility exists that he’s improved. His early season APM is a good start. We’ll see if its a fluke or not.

by jksnake99 on Nov 6, 2009 4:52 PM PST up reply actions

Durant has the potential to be an excellent help defender. He is a little slow laterally and very wispy, though.

I am a big APM fan, but even I admit that a full season can be too small a sample size at times. We’ll see how it turns out.

Even if he doesn’t improve, if OKC could just get someone in the middle… they’d be good.

I feel your frustration

I’m just a little surprised that Chicago doesn’t have a copyright on moving guys out of their best positions in order to force some convoluted lineup out on the floor. I think Nate owes us royalties.

You guys need to Blake to pull a Nocioni and go tell the coach he thinks the team would be better with him coming off the bench – absolve any guilt/loyalty issues Nate may be having with demoting him.

I also thought Nate was insane for this. But it worked. No one can dispute that. He found a combination that worked, at least for this game. And they found Oden in the post, which no other combination was doing, enough to provide some interior offense.

So good for you, Nate. You are crazy, and I don’t think it will work often, but you threw Pops off his game plan and they never fully recovered.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
