Open Threading through the Early Games - 11/06
On this fine anniversary of Brandon Roy's excellence, we have a sweet slate of NBA games.
Particular games of interest:
Phoenix @ Boston. Looks like a Phoenix loss with the interior advantage Boston has. Nash has played at a high level this season, though, so it should still be a fun matchup of offense vs. defense.
OKC @ Houston. This is a game I'll be viewing quite intently. The starless, tough Houston team against the star-driven, soft OKC Pseudosonics. Fun times. I like Houston to win this... defense is enough to beat the lower echelon of the conference, especially at home.
Cleveland @ NY. James in NY. Everyone freak out.
Denver @ Miami. Denver's early-season play has been fantastic, even with their sharpshooter suspended. I think they win this, despite being on the road. Wade and Melo is a fun matchup.
Toronto @ New Orleans. Are either of these teams for real? New Orleans' core three players have been excellent in the early season but suffer from Byron Scott stubbornly playing Bobby Brown. Chris Paul this year: 30 ppg, >75 TS%, 42 AST%, 54 shots made, 30 shots missed.
Let's get this Friday night of hoops started.

what are we talking about here?
I wish people would stop saying "don't worry about it" as if I'm losing sleep over it
go blazers
bayless leaves over my dead body
START MILLER
B-Roy is selfish (that's not a joke anymore)
Just put on my new Roy jersey for the first time
(I lost weight so had to get a smaller size) in preparation for attending my first reg. season game of the year.
LETS MAKE IT 4 of 5 against SAS!
See you at the RG, bring the noise,

lol I'm not sure what Frank is doing
seems to me they would be much better off going small and having a lineup of Harris (or Alston in this case), Lee, CDR, Williams, and Lopez.
that’s a young team that has the potential to be pretty exciting. they’d have to really try to push the ball to make up for the size difference (starting a 6’6" Williams at the 4).

yes, yes, they did.
I am still torn on Anderson vs. Lee. I know that Anderson fits their system perfectly… but Lee was a tremendous glue guy for them. I loved their big lineup with him at point.

Gerald Wallace has...
Zero assists on the season. I’m watching the Bobcats just to see when that streak ends.
I'm torn on Young
Is he good or can he just make spectacular plays? His production is not very consistent.
Green’s production has been consistently mediocre, though.
Iggy is such a wonderful defender and playmaker… He is fantastic.

everything Durant is not
Iggy is ;)

its way, way too early to know if it constitutes real improvement, but Durant's adjusted plus/minus is stellar so far this year.
he still has more turnovers than assists. He has to improve upon that or he is just a super Kevin Martin. Nice player, not a cornerstone.
free bayless
he has more assists than turnovers thus far this year.
and his rebounding is very valuable for an SF.
He’s not really making shots so far this year though.
isn’t it you who tells me that a player improves the most in the first three years? I see no difference in Durant, except him turning the ball over less. His AST% has gone down.
free bayless
Rereading that first sentence, didn’t mean it quite that way. Just saying that we should be seeing more improvement from Durant in his third year.
free bayless
well, he's rebounding more but there's no improvement in his playmaking ability
The key is really his defense though. We need to track all the defensive metrics.
He’s not going to be LeBron, that’s for sure.
I’m not sure the key is defense. As Mort has said, playmaking is just crucial from the guy that has the ball in his hands.
Defense is important, though.
free bayless
I don't really agree with you and Mort on this one
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having a super efficient scorer like that. He’s not going to be a guy who can solely carry them like LeBron— they need some post guys and we don’t know how good Westbrook will be.
what separates Durant from Martin at this point? He’s a better rebounder, but he is also a SF who plays with Nenad Krstic.
He has to become a playmaker. Teams that win titles are led by playmakers at the wing.
I’m not saying Durant isn’t an incredible scorer. I just think he’s gotta focus a bit more on passing to be a really great player.
free bayless
I think rebounds and blocks are about it, right now.
Kevin Martin with rebounds and blocks would be a stud though.
I think blocks are really overrated. A lot of statistical analysis showed Camby to be a poor defender for the years that he led the league in blocks… that’s why the Nugs traded him. Dean Oliver is not dumb.
free bayless
yeah, I'm familiar with that analysis.
You have to admit that Durant has a lot more defensive tools than Martin though. We need to track his defensive metrics this season closely, but the possibility exists that he’s improved. His early season APM is a good start. We’ll see if its a fluke or not.
Durant has the potential to be an excellent help defender. He is a little slow laterally and very wispy, though.
I am a big APM fan, but even I admit that a full season can be too small a sample size at times. We’ll see how it turns out.
Even if he doesn’t improve, if OKC could just get someone in the middle… they’d be good.
free bayless
pistons should tank this season, draft john wall, hire john calipari and run the dribble-drive offense with wall/stuckey
that would be a fun experiment. Make him GM of the Kings and give Simmons the Warriors.
free bayless
nope. I really should get around to Simmons’ book, though. I’ve stayed away from his writing as I’ve felt that in the last year, his writing has become a bit brash.
The Wingcast endorsement was convincing.
free bayless
As much as I like having all the games the difference in volume
From one channel to another is a pain
maybe this Bayless kid could be a player. I dunno. Just saying that a lottery talent might be worth developing.
free bayless
One is 33 and one is Steve Blake though.
We’re trying to win a title here. We need to see what we have in Bayless at some point.
He gets his chance next season, at the latest
Injuries or a trade open the door this year, and I suspect one of the two will happen.
actually, we have one point guard. I decided that Steven, as he contains little discernible passing talent, is pretty much an off-guard at this point. I mean… when he dribbles we cringe.
free bayless
Let’s count the good PGs in the last few drafts.
Westbrook
Augustin
Lawson
Jennings
George Hill
Flynn
’Reke (though he may be more of a 2)

geek chic.
i was sporting that look since 4th grade, before it was cool

LeBron is on fire tonight.
40 for the Cavs. LeBron with 19. He go for 50 tonight?

Cleveland with 16 baskets - Lebron has 8 makes and 5 assists through 1

There's nothing quite as fun as following New York knowing your team has their draft pick
Although watching D’Antoni’s face at the ’08 draft lottery when they stayed at the 6 spot was almost as good.

I was too busy doing the happy dance to watch him at that point
but I did derive great satisfaction from it once I calmed down. :)

Anyone watching the Nuggets game?
They’re getting killed….

that is really really lame. why do this on a nationally televised game? oh brother…

Thats it....
I have tried to remain calm and give Nate a chance. I am done if this is true. FIRE NATE. How obvious is it to anybody with eyes that Andre and Blake should never be on the court at the same time. UGH…
I am starting to wonder if KP peed in Nate’s cheerios or something and now he is throwing the season as payback.
/over reaction
FIRE NATE
How dare he start that lineup?
Blair will kill us.
Horrible, horrible, horrible.
No one who can defend Parker.
Nate should go coach in Minnesota, where they believe in playing two PGs.
What? Huh?
In that case, never mind.
Nate 1, Bedge 0.

OK, I'm officially baffled...
Is Nate THAT spineless that, in order to start Dre, he ALSO has to start Blake??
Madness….
Hopefully, just a tweeters joke, or I’ll be gathering supplies for the effigy…
WHAT. THE. F.
I wish I could cuss right now. I think I will go to tinychat and let it fly if anybody wants to laugh at me…
Nate is drastically overthinking things right now...
Either that or he really is as dumb as some of the eccentrics claim. Completely baffling.
There is also the possiblity that Nate’s mancrush on Blake just wouldn’t allow him to start Andre over Blake. If this has anything to do with Nate’s personal relationship with Blake… UGH….
No way
We reward Webster’s good shooting/D by benching him???
This makes no sense. None.

I might have to stay up to watch now.
Although it will ruin some of our complaining at Vinny if other teams seriously pick up small ball lineups

I just can’t believe this. We are one of the biggest teams in the league and we are purposely neutering our greatest strength.

I feel your frustration
I’m just a little surprised that Chicago doesn’t have a copyright on moving guys out of their best positions in order to force some convoluted lineup out on the floor. I think Nate owes us royalties.
You guys need to Blake to pull a Nocioni and go tell the coach he thinks the team would be better with him coming off the bench – absolve any guilt/loyalty issues Nate may be having with demoting him.
In honor of the dearly departed, I declare July PB&J month - everyone raise a sandwich to the memory of Ben!
I felt like Nate was an above average coach… he shouldn’t have to have a player come to him and tell him not to feel bad about not starting him.

No, he shouldn't
But that did work for us (as if I had anything to do with it) with Skiles finally putting Noc on the bench and starting Luol

Let's see how this works. I'm not gonna say fire Nate yet ... we haven't seen that team together
Love.
Haven't we seen that unit quite a bit this year
and its been horribly ineffective

we've seen Blake-Miller-Roy
in the game together before. it. does. not. work.
this is a horrible horrible idea. no clue what Nate’s thinking.
Blazers make the Fans, Fans don't make the Blazers--broyposse
Blake - not a shooting guard, Andre - not a shooting guard
Rudy – a damn good shooting guard.
Why are we not at least starting Rudy instead of Blake.
facepalm

It's like a kid with his blankie
Just won’t let go. We have 4 shooting guards better than Blake and somehow he is still starting?!?

i mean,
this makes no sense on any level right? can somebody that knows more about basketball than me explain any possible logical explanation, even if you don’t believe it, of why this is a good idea?
Blazers make the Fans, Fans don't make the Blazers--broyposse
The worst part about this move...
Our perimeter defense is awful. Webster is our best perimeter player and has been the one guy giving consistent energy and effort on that side of the floor. Nate says: PLAY WELL ON MY TEAM? TO THE BENCH YOU GO!!!!!!
Who would have guessed that Suns offense>Celtics defense

From blazerbanter twitter:
Miller said he is OK with lineup, but did not have any feel as to how it would work out during the game.
My translation: I am glad I am finally starting but what the hell is coach thinking?
He is gonna be like Wade was last year
Ridiculous stats on a borderline playoff team

I wonder how many fans at the RG will boo Nate when he is introduced
Some of them will be in shock from the shear stupidity of the starting line up
Nash is clutch

After reading the absurd news about the starting lineup change, I'm glad I changed my signature yesterday.
Dear Paul Allen:
Fire Nate McMillan & hire Jeff Van Gundy.
Sincerely,

A couple more of these type of decisions from Nate
and I hope you will allow me to hop on the bandwagon…
Yes, there's plenty of room.
Dear Paul Allen:

Oh, better add this.
Nate 1, jscot 0.
I also thought Nate was insane for this. But it worked. No one can dispute that. He found a combination that worked, at least for this game. And they found Oden in the post, which no other combination was doing, enough to provide some interior offense.
So good for you, Nate. You are crazy, and I don’t think it will work often, but you threw Pops off his game plan and they never fully recovered.
When nothing is working, it doesn’t necessarily hurt to try something crazy.
