Gameday Open Thread - Spurs (Pre-Game)
Will Nate McMillan change his starting lineup? Will the Blazers be able to slow down Tony Parker? Will Manu Ginobili kill any bats? Will DeJuan Blair grab 84 rebounds in a single game? Pressing questions that you should discuss here.

I don't either
If you’re playing Blake with Miller and Roy he’s going to be off the ball and just out there to shoot 3s, so why not play Rudy who has more size and moves well without the ball. I don’t want to see Blake and Miller on the court at the same time.
Your confusing thesis has captured my attention. Tell me more.

Does he not realize how bad the three guard lineup has worked this year? Is he really so obsessed with Blake that he risks putting Roy against bigger guys offensively and defensively for more minutes a game?
This is just sad at this point.

any one game +/- has too much noise to mean anything substantial.
free bayless
by Cablinasian on Nov 6, 2009 6:12 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
true...
a 13 point swing still means something though. If it was 2 or 3 points, meh, but 13 is worthy of notice IMO…
by Rudiculous on Nov 6, 2009 6:14 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
it really isn't.
All it says is that the team played better in that game when Blake was in. That doesn’t mean Blake or Miller had anything whatsoever to do with that. Plus/minus is very noisy over entire seasons. For one game, its worthless, except to remember what parts of the game the runs happened in.
by jksnake99 on Nov 6, 2009 6:15 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
With that theory(not saying I disagree)
You might as well just say +/- is completely worthless, whole season or one game…
by Rudiculous on Nov 6, 2009 6:18 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
no. Over the course of the season there is enough data that it’s worth looking at. More data = good. 48 minutes data = bad.
free bayless
by Cablinasian on Nov 6, 2009 6:19 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Why though
If a players +/- can be drastically effected during a given game, that makes that data “noisy” and useless. How does using 82 sets of noisy, inaccurate data all of the sudden turn into a solid set of statistics?
by Rudiculous on Nov 6, 2009 6:22 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
say Steve Blake goes 4-5 from three against OKC. Drawing from that one game you could say that he is an 80% three point shooter… but there is a lot of luck involved. It’s not good to draw any conclusions from that data other than he had a good night. Over the course of the season, however, his percentage will tend somewhat toward his true ability and the data will be more reliable.
As the sample size grows, the data is better.
free bayless
by Cablinasian on Nov 6, 2009 6:26 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
True
I guess my point is that if you are going to use one game as a data point, it has to mean something…
Agree to disagree though, I am a fan of +/-, and although I think one game is obviously not a good way to draw conclusions, it can still be used, possibly with a bucket of salt…
by Rudiculous on Nov 6, 2009 6:29 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs

Using +/-, yes
I see that it has major flaws, I just think if it means something over an 82 games, it should mean something during one game as well, even if it is basically nothing…
by Rudiculous on Nov 6, 2009 6:32 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
any one game single +/- has an insane amount of noise. A thirteen point swing is very little in one game considering all the factors.

McMillan is sending a message to the team tonight. Don’t be like Martell. Martell goes out and plays his butt off every night while trying to fit his role. This type of behaviour will result in immediate benching.
For the love of all things good…Bench Blake, start Miller, don’t punish martell for playing solid bball. It’s so simple…

Please vote in my multiple choice question...
What has been the most dissapointing aspect of the season so far?
A) Batums injury leaves us sorely lacking a quality defender which hurts the team on the whole.
B) Andre Miller seems to be more of a wrench in the gear than anything.
C) It’s way too early to think about this. This team is better than last year and 5 games is too small a sample size.
D) Oden still stinks and can’t stay on the court.
E) Roy isn’t his usual MVP self.
F) Rudy Fernandez has played significantly worse than what he’s capable of.

there will be changes.
and I’ve been trying to stay positive too. But I think it’s been pretty clear over 5 games that the Miller-Blake-Roy combo does. not. work. at all. of all the lineups they’ve used, that 3 guard combo just isn’t effective. so it’s hard to be positive when you see the head coach decide to start what is obviously a bad combination. the only good that can come of it is if they really stink and Nate realizes to never play them together again.

it's just odd to me
that the only major changes on this team are adding Miller (who we don’t know) and adding Webster after injury (a player we do know). the only difficult part should be finding minutes. the beginning of the season should be finding out if Miller and Roy can work together and if Miller can be trusted (I think he could) to have total control over the offense. and a lot of that is Miller learning Roy. but when all the players on the team are, pretty much, known quantities, how hard should it be to know what lineups will and won’t work? the only feasible 3 guard lineup includes Rudy, and that’s pretty obvious.

If I were Martell I'd be livid
That guy has played very good basketball, and there are three ways to read this:
1. Nate is completely in the tank for Blake, regardless of performance (my view)
2. KP bought a high priced toy this off-season and it needs to start regardless of performance
3. Brandon Roy isn’t just the 2 guard, he’s also the coach and GM, and he’s Jordanesque in the latter category if this is the lineup he wants
This could be an absolute disaster. I almost hope it is, because we’ve all seen the effectiveness, or lack thereof, of the Miller-Blake backcourt. Nate needs to choose one. My view is it should be Miller, but benching Martell to stroke the egos of guys who whine at the expense of one who won’t is garbage. Sulk away Marty Blazer, maybe Nate will run a flipping play for you for a change!

Agree
That’s part of what makes me so mad about this decision. Martell is one of the few players who has produced to and above expectations this year, not to mention his attitude is great. Somebody has a sig quote from Martell that tells you everything you need to know about #23: “We have two great units on this team, and I’m excited about being part of either one”. He’ll handle this like a soldier, even though he has every reason to throw a fit.
Ben, remember the “If a Blazer were a Wire character, who would they be?” post? Martell Webster just answered Wee Bey in the affirmative. Soldiers always get done wrong, they’re expendable like that.

The results of my scientific poll lead me to believe this problem is entirely fixable...
Coaching and Miller seem to be the problems. Coaches know more about the game and their team than your typical fans. Worst case scenario Blake plays 38 minutes a night like last year and we have our 54 win team back.
Something makes me think losing Batum is more significant than people realize.

I'm trying to rationalise this but my brain just can't do it.
We’re playing one of the least effective combos we have, we’ve snubbed our hardest working player for said line-up, we failed to give our second/third best guard a chance in the starting line-up, we’re babying someone who really doesn’t need to be and we’re making things worse for Greg Oden.
Awesome.

It doesn't make sense
Webster is doing exactly what we need in a wing to play with Roy. I’d be ok with starting Miller over Blake, but not both at the same time. Ugh. I don’t like this at all. Since we’re going to have them on court together a lot, can we at least not take our centers out if they’re doing well like against the Hawks?

Should I stop wearing my opening night 2006 season hat?
It was the first season of Roy/Aldridge, but it’s also tainted by Randolph and Miles…

The Spurs, with all their Youth, are planning on running a full-court press all-night and Nate is countering with 2 Point Guards to break their press.

Miller, Blake, and Roy
three guys who can give Oden plenty of looks on the offensive end. I don’t see Webster or Rudy doing that if they started, especially Webster. That second unit is going to be fun to watch with Bayless, Rudy and Martell putting the ball up.

Oden's gonna get 2 fouls in no time
if BOTH Miller and Blake start.
Seriously, someone has to investigate if “Blakey” has some incriminating photos of Nate to have this kind of pull.

It's a nationally televised game
so David Stern has made a point to the refs to foul Oden out as quickly as possible… If Oden gets 12 minutes tonight I will be shocked.

I wouldn't be surprised if Oden doesn't pick up fouls quickly.
He’s the star that the NBA wants to market. When they flipped to the game preview a few minutes ago, they were focused on GO. Look for a breakout game from the big fella.

I am starting to think that Nate is sending a message to somebody...
There is no way he thinks this lineup could be our starters all season, so why even try?
My guess is that he has gotten a lot of pressure from within to start Miller, so he is throwing a tempertantrum about it. “See? I started Miller, NOW STAY OUT OF MY BUISNESS!”…

ESPN
I have comcast so I get the Mikes for almost every game. I like to mix it up and see a more objective perspective of the team. If there’s any really bad fouls or fights I turn to the blazers’ broadcast to see what Ricey has to say.

I think I figured it out!
Nate, you sly dog… I think I just figured out the wisdom of this starting lineup…
Nate wants to run. He just said so on the pre-game show.
He had to get Dre in there.
But he ALSO wants to see what Bayless can do…
How to do that?
More Blake out the of PG slot rotation… quickly sub in Martell for him, and then Bayless, not Blake becomes the second guard…
Brilliant…
