John Hollinger on "what's wrong with the Blazers" from his 11/6 chat
I don't always agree with him, and he relies too much on stats, but I couldn't have said this better myself!
Rob (Oregon)
What is wrong with the blazers?
John Hollinger (12:08 PM)What if I said "nothing?" They played five good teams, lost by 6, 4, and 3, and are now 2-3 -- just like they were after five games last year. I think there's an uneasiness in PDX because the expectations are so much higher this season, but I can't shake the nagging feeling that if Oden makes those foul shots against Denver nobody would be saying a peep.
What do you think B-Edgers? Reason for worry, or is Hollinger on point?

Hollinger actually made basically the same point I did here:

The games we’ve lost have been against quality opponents at a time when we’re still tinkering with our rotations. Lots of guys are still getting used to playing together. Really the only teams playing excellent basketball right now are Boston and Denver. Everyone else are dealing with injuries and roster changes.
It’s early in the season. Give our team some time.
Regarding Hedo Türkoğlu:
Look at the bright side, Blazers fans -- you dodged a bullet. He peaked statistically two years ago. He's allegedly 30 but could be closer to 32 or 33 for all we know. (Do you trust Turkish birth certificates? And isn't it weird that he played four years of pro ball in Turkey in the 1990s?)

Agreed
Hollinger makes a good point. They still need to play better moving forward.

What would be great is if they could play better moving backward
Then maybe we could improve that 2-3 record to maybe 4-1 or something.

You're both wrong
If they played better moving from side to side, the defense would be stronger, we’d have had at least 4-5 more stops per game, and we’d be 6-0 now.

Yep.
I liken it to a less evil version of the Steve Bartman/foul ball/Cubs thing a while back, yeah it was bad, but the very next play the Cubs shortstop had an EASY ground ball that looked to be a tailor made double play, and he muffed it. Yet for some reason, poor Steve took the blame and had to become a Marlins fan.

Disagree
If you watch the games, you can see the team is out of sync and often completely lost. The stats do not reveal this.
which is scary
imagine if that team figures out how to play together.
However, the blazers HAVE looked horrible regardless of what stats say.
"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.
But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

"I told Pau the Lakers never win here in Portland; I think it's great." -- Rudy Fernandez
The Blazers haven’t looked “horrible”. I mean come on.
Sacramento Kings are horrible.
Washington State Cougars football is horrible.
We just need some time to settle in. It just floors me that fans are freaking out after 5 games. I mean good lord. Did people really expect that we’d just jump right back in and start playing playoff basketball in early November? After all the roster changes and injury issues we’ve had? Give it a rest. Jeez. if this team is .500 in December go ahead and freak out.

Team game has been horrible, talent has kept us decent
They’ve made the games close due to the ridiculous amount of talent they have at every position (outside of Blake). Their team game and flow really has been horrible, but the fact they have so many talented players allows them to keep it close when one of them is bound to get hot (i.e. Rudy against Denver, Outlaw against Houston, Roy, LA, etc.) This will get us somewhere, but definitely no further than last year. We need to figure things out, get a system worked out with Miller starting, and start being a team. When the talent is melded into a team then we will be a contender.

better team execution on offense and defense is what is sorely needed, or the Blazers will be “one round and out” again, in the playoffs. These problems are not “new” to 2009, they were prevalent last season, as well. One-on-one young “talent” and depth can “get a team by” during the regular season, and those 54 wins!are held up as proof that the team has over-achieved and “arrived”. But post-season success is only realized by mental toughness and team play, and the Blazer’s roster is still lacking in those areas
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
I think that sums it up pretty well

"Nothing" is not accurate.
Blazers have been out of sorts throughout the 8 game preseason and through the first 5 games of the season.
People who really follow the team see it and know it; Hollinger looks at opponents and victory margins and says it’s all par for the course, based on opponents and victory margins.

they haven't been playing their best...
but what Hollinger is saying is there is nothing WRONG with the Blazers, its just that we’re figuring it out. We’ve definitely been out of sorts, but its more of a chemistry/flow issue than an actual issue with players or something.
He’s just eluding to the fact that we’re not getting crushed or stomped on, but that we just haven’t put it all together – not time for fans or anyone else to be freaking out

Yeah
But everyone always has bad games where they don’t look good. The fact is, despite looking bad, we were in every game, and could have won every one of them if a couple bounces went our way. And it has been against strong opposition.
So there is reason for optimism, too. If we looked good and lost to Denver, we’d think, “Oh, no, even when we play well we can’t beat those guys.” Instead, we barely lost to them while playing lousy. If we start to click, it is going to be scary.

I know for a fact that several members of the national media frequent this webpage. It frustrates me that so many of our fans act like the sky is falling. We’ve played FIVE games and people are characterizing the team like it’s March or something. Some of these threads aren’t I’m reading aren’t fair in any way shape or form. I guess I’d like it if some fans were critical but supportive instead of critical and pessimistic. It reflects poorly on us when members of the media come in and see people posting panic threads for a team that went 54-28 last season without subtracting any notable players.

The reason
for panic is that the rotations are so crazy you never know when someone is coming out or who the starters are. It just looks confusing.
Remember how Chip kelly was in over his head
and the U of O program was in disarray after the Boise State game and how Chip Kelly is a genius and the U of O has a program on the rise today.
Fans are fans.
I agree to some degree...
But having been at the Hawks game, I can say that the team seemed sluggish and uninspired.
Even Nate mentioned “effort” in his post-game comments.
Yes, we will get better and play better together over time, but there’s no excuse for not putting forth effort. Especially at home.
The Blazers are showing flashes of amazing play, utilizing their new weapons
These good stretches are alternating with periods when they look confused and out of sync at both ends. Unfortunately, when you’re playing good NBA teams, uneven play won’t get it done. It’s like blood in a water to a shark.
But I think we’re failing to pay enough attention to that good stuff: the successful GO post-ups, Miller-Rudy hookups, etc. That’s exciting, and it’s a glimpse of things to come.

hollinger is always talking up the blazers
this makes me feel better, but i would not be as optimistic as he is. our team defense is terrible and we don’t have the same amount confidence at home. but we have gone through 1/16th of the season, so I won’t say too mcuh
Nowhere to go but up!
Or, ‘always look on the bright si-ide of life.’
Our team has been competitive against playoff teams so far this season and:
- Oden is a shadow of what he will be come playoff time
- Rudy hasn’t done anything.
- Batum will contribute to a playoff team
- A top 10 NBA point guard isn’t starting for us, yet…
- LMA and BRoy have been inconsistent.
- The team, from the coaches on down, have to adapt to new talent and (hopefully) a new style of play.
- The team captain is questioning his whole mojo – what got him the big bucks are now not what we need. (That’s gotta be tough)… (And the guy who should be running the team, at least in a directing the offense way, is saying the same thing!)
If these things resolve themselves like I expect they will, we just have to make the playoffs to be one scary team to reckon with…
