Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

11-4-2009 Official Junk Drawer

Another Confession:  My Jump.

Star-divide

It was in 1996 when I made the "jump," living carefree for a year as a teenager 3000 miles from my family in the Big Apple.  She took my tender brown flesh and exposed it to a world that I never felt before.  Warm, soft, and a little irriguous...yet so abrasive if I was to ever turn on her after this unsorted, but invited engagement.  She sensed my discomfort when I first entered and teased me maliciously with her looks.  I composed myself to appear, from her angle, aloof above the fray.  I intensified her persnickety nature and she slowly let out waves after waves of her primordial screams.  Everyone told me it would be a surreal feeling and they were absolutely right.  That summer, I made the jump into the cheap bleachers of old Yankee Stadium, all 90 days, and now and forever, am a fan of the pinstripes.

Go Yankees!!!

Peace.  Stay Cool.  Forever.

good for you

on the Yankee Stadium pilgrimage. Well done. It is a museum filled with the memories of the greatest baseball players ever.

It is very tiresome that the Yankees have won so many championships, and so many other teams have won so few. – Elgin

the old Yankee stadium, as a stadium was highly, highly overrated

The history of it made it an exciting pilgrimage for me in 2002, but its not exactly a beautiful ballpark.

did you get to sit in the bleachers section??? a total different experience.

i also went to Shea and Fenway that summer….Shea is a dump and a half. Fenway was cool but it wasn’t the same atmosphere…maybe it was the opponent

of all these, I've only been to Fenway

Ruben Sierra of all people hit an upper deck grand slam that landed about 5 rows in front of me.

I saw Koufax beat Dierker 1-0 at Dodger Stadium

I saw Mantle hit one out of the bullpen in right field against the Angels. That’s as far back as I can go. Mickey could barely run at that point. – Elgin

I agree. Yankee Stadium in the bleachers is an amazing experience.

Authentic in pure baseball bedlam. I had the a great time. Fenway was ok, most people were too concerned with their beer.

Wow, the Indiana Pacers v. New York Knicks game has some fascinating subplots.

1. Dahntay Jones didn’t do an altogether horrible job playing out of position at poewr forward.

2. Jordan Hill, who I projected to be a Chris Wilcox/Drew Gooden level bust, is flat-out screwed playing under Mike D’Antoni. Without question, Hill is a poor fit in that run-and-gun system that mostly favors jump shooters.

3. I’m still fully expecting Donnie Walsh to use Wilson Chandler as a trade chip to dump Jared Jeffries’ contract. The Sacramento Kings were a prime target, as Kenny Thomas’ expiring contract is a fat one. For some reason, though, the Kings signed Ime Udoka. I’m sure it’s a non-guaranteed deal, so Geoff Petrie can waive him down the line if necessary to clear roster space.

Dear Paul Allen:

Fire Nate McMillan & hire Jeff Van Gundy.

Sincerely,

I have had several "horrifying" moments related to subway, the worst of which I will tell now.

There is a subway down the street from where I work, and for awhile it was staffed by several people who I assume were fans of methamphetamines, and one girl who was morbidly obese. Now luckily the larger girl was not making my sandwich, but after another girl had made it, I noticed that the large girls belly was covered with mustard in a horizontal line. She had been dragging her belly across the sandwich prep area, to the point where it looked like the mustard had crusted up on her gut. I totally didn’t know what to do, I wouldn’t want to point that out about somebody, but damn, her supervisor shouldn’t have let that happen. So I ended up taking the sandwich, because I only get so much time for lunch, and I only had so much money on me, but I did not eat there or even go back for at least two years.

From the moment that the Yankees recorded the last out, the car horns have not stopped, and nor have the bullets. I am shocked and awed by the amount of firepower that has emerged in my neighborhood, and, frankly, I’m a little frightened. The firetrucks keep pulling out of the station down the street, but they keep driving away from the heavily armed crowd at the end of the block.

Not that I would drive towards them myself, but still.

but more like exactly than approximately

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Nov 4, 2009 10:36 PM PST up reply actions

the fact that the equations of motion for both the ascent and descent are identical

also, you need to conserve energy. Basically you have kinetic energy being converted to potential energy on the ascent, and then potential energy being converted to kinetic energy on the descent

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Nov 4, 2009 10:50 PM PST up reply actions

ok.. im not going to claim to know something on this..

but maybe you can point my flaw out?

I figured that the bullet goes up at a velocity related to the fire off but the pull of gravity produces a negative acceleration until velocity reaches 0 at which point the negative acceleration of gravity becomes positive acceleration going down..

by galacticlove on Nov 4, 2009 10:54 PM PST up reply actions

yep, but then the bullet constantly accelerates from the point where it hit a zero velocity.

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Nov 4, 2009 10:58 PM PST up reply actions

ok

but then wouldn’t the bullets final velocity only be a factor of how far it went up.. er.. how far it came down?

hmmm.. I either got it or I’m more confused..

by galacticlove on Nov 4, 2009 11:05 PM PST up reply actions

yep, but how far is went up depends on how fast its initial velocity was

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Nov 4, 2009 11:07 PM PST up reply actions

and is directly related to that negative acceleration..

so unless the force of gravity lessens due to increased distance from earth.. yeah.. it doesn’t matter what velocity was when it goes up.. because gravity is the constant…

you should be a teacher..

by galacticlove on Nov 4, 2009 11:10 PM PST up reply actions

it is basically constant as the heights being talked about are much smaller than the radius of the earth

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Nov 4, 2009 11:24 PM PST up reply actions

I was thinking that

but started thinking that if the bullet started tumbling in the air at the start of the descent it would decrease the initial rate of descent.

by chalupa king on Nov 4, 2009 10:46 PM PST up reply actions

you would have to put the tumbling in to the equation of motion, and you would probably just do it from the start as some outside force would have to act on the bullet to start the tumble

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Nov 4, 2009 10:48 PM PST up reply actions

Not sure about that

How could a say 30 cal bullet droped from even 30000 feet be going as fast as coming out of the barrel of a 300 mag of even a 30-06?

by southern oregon on Nov 4, 2009 10:48 PM PST up reply actions

you just need to make the height that you drop the bullet from high enough so that the potential energy is the same as that from being shot from a gun.

Unless you shoot this bullet off with enough energy so as to reach the escape velocity of earth then what I am saying holds

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Nov 4, 2009 10:52 PM PST up reply actions

in what way? It will have both a rotational and a linear momentum, but what part are you talking about something going faster.

I am assuming you are saying the linear momentum of a bullet that is rotating about its symmetry axis has more linear momentum than a bullet tumbling about an axis perp to its sym. axis, but you are now assuming that the bullet is tumbling, which it either does from the start or when acted upon by an external force with a component perp. to its direction of travel.

So I am just saying put in the tumble at the start or dont, it only affects how high it goes, but doesent change the time reversability of the physics

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Nov 4, 2009 11:03 PM PST up reply actions

from what I remember from mythbusters...

You are exactly right. Bullets reach terminal velocity when falling out of the sky, but shot out of a gun, they leave at a much higher velocity…

by Rudiculous on Nov 4, 2009 11:06 PM PST up reply actions

A round musket ball would behave the way

Jonestr predicts but his theory dosen’t work a spinning projectile vs one that is tumbling except in a theoretical vacum

where is the tumbling imparted?

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Nov 4, 2009 11:14 PM PST up reply actions

what did they say terminal velocity was for a bullet?

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Nov 4, 2009 11:15 PM PST up reply actions

I don't know

I am not a zaching physicist. I took physics in college, but I really don’t care enough to try and figure this out. I was just saying what I thought I remembered watching from mythbusters. I have been an avid gun owner and shooter since I was 10 years old, and I remember being surprised at how harmless a falling bullet was…

that said, I could be wrong…

by Rudiculous on Nov 4, 2009 11:24 PM PST up reply actions

I just remember that the exit velocity for a .22 was around 300mph and that was pretty high for guns, and I reference this against the fact that terminal velocity for a human is like 120mph, so I am assuming that a bullet would probably be higher than that, which could make the effect negligible

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Nov 4, 2009 11:30 PM PST up reply actions

The bullet would reach terminal velocity falling

and then slow down as the air got thicker at no time would it be moving faster than when it left the barrel

by southern oregon on Nov 4, 2009 11:31 PM PST up reply actions

it certainly would never move faster than the exit velocity

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Nov 4, 2009 11:32 PM PST up reply actions

that is obvious

but I believe due to air friction and terminal velocity, it will never even get close to the speed at which it left, depending on the gun of course. You shoot a bb gun into the air, it might very well equal the speed in which it left. An actual rifle though, that fires 3+ miles into the air, I don’t think so….

by Rudiculous on Nov 4, 2009 11:37 PM PST up reply actions

as you pointed out, it should only depend on if the exit velocity is greater than terminal velocity

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Nov 4, 2009 11:39 PM PST up reply actions

I found a page with the mythbusters results...
They first fired bullets straight into the ground as a control:

    * BB: 3"
    * 9mm: 6"
    * .30-06: 12"

Jamie fired a clip of 9mm bullets up into the air. 39 seconds later they heard the bullets hit the ground.

Adam: “I’m searching across the desert for a pencil-sized hole”

The first bullet that Adam found went only 2" into the ground and appeared to have hit the ground on it’s side. The bullet had traveled 330ft horizontally. Jamie found another bullet hole almost identical to the first.

Their conclusion:

For the first time ever, they deemed this one busted, plausible, and confirmed. All of their tests, from the pig’s head to the 9mm firing to the balloon, showed that a bullet fired perfectly straight up into the air is not lethal. However, it is also very difficult to shoot perfectly straight up into the air and, with the cases cited by Dr. Mohler, they have confirmed that people have died from bullets falling from the sky.

Meaning, a bullet fired at a perfect 90 degrees from the ground will in fact reach a terminal velocity, and will therefor not be going nearly as fast as it was when fired. Problem is, it is basically impossible to do just that…

I honestly don't think that Fedor will ever fight for Dana White.

Their dislike of each other seems strong enough for them to keep the grudge going for quite a while. However, if they ever do reach some kind of agreement, I would predict Fedor would beat Lesner by submission.

by chalupa king on Nov 4, 2009 11:36 PM PST up reply actions

dana white has no reason to sign fedor

they’ve put all this money into hyping up brock, and if he loses it just makes the heavyweights in the UFC look bad…kinda like when Kimbo lost and that promotion folded since he lost to a last second replacement.

Senior Asian ambassador of Blazers Edge

by Philthyanimal on Nov 4, 2009 11:40 PM PST up reply actions

I'm sure there would be huge PPV profits

if Fedor were to fight Lesner for the heavyweight title. If he were to win there usually is a contractual obligation to defend the title which means more money for Dana. If Fedor loses then there is no big downside for the UFC, except for the loss of possible profits that Fedor would have brought in.

by chalupa king on Nov 4, 2009 11:50 PM PST up reply actions

I disagree...

Brock was a PR nightmare after his last win in the UFC. He ridiculed the event’s biggest promoter, and said terrible things about screwing his wife in the post fight interview. The reason I like the UFC, is because Dana White is always looking for the next best thing, he prides himself on having the best MMA fighters in the world. If Fedor is for real, Dana is drooling at the thought of getting him under contract….

Mr. jonestr/snake

So I am assigned extra credit today… have to make logic gate circuits, teacher builds it up to be hard.

Am I missing something? It seems really simple.

free bayless

by Cablinasian on Nov 4, 2009 10:32 PM PST reply actions

what kind of circuits?

digital logic is usually very straightforward. If you can write a truth table you can understand the circuit.

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Nov 4, 2009 10:33 PM PST up reply actions

yep. Just wrote the tables. Seems basic.

I thought it was easier than analog

by jonestr on Nov 4, 2009 10:35 PM PST up reply actions

yeah it’s an intro class I took because I had nothing else worthwhile to take… I guess I shouldn’t be shocked that it’s easy. We are just taking switches and making circuits right now. Feels like pre-algebra.

I’m hoping next quarter is harder with physics, chem, and diff eq… any tips from the illuminati on what calc II skills to brush up on for diff eq?

free bayless

by Cablinasian on Nov 4, 2009 10:38 PM PST up reply actions

your ability to look up forms in a table

there are only so many separable diff eqs around

It is seriously an easy class, very formulaic

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Nov 4, 2009 10:40 PM PST up reply actions

oh ok. It’s only 3 credits… Kind of hope it’s interesting. How does linear algebra compare?

free bayless

by Cablinasian on Nov 4, 2009 10:41 PM PST up reply actions

possibly even easier, but it depends as some people teach it as real proof-theorem type of class and you would need some intro to stuff like that (mine was finite math) otherwise stuff like an assumed level of familiarity with stuff like inductive proofs will be hard to deal with.

If you can solve the characteristic equation you are nearly gold for lin. alg.

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Nov 4, 2009 10:44 PM PST up reply actions

my calc series was a lot of proof-theorem.

is it more enjoyable than analytic geometry?

the four he gave us were NAND, OR, AND, NOR, whatever that means. I have the tables so I guess now we just play legos and build ’em.

Royster made a point in the media row report that I’ve been meaning to say: it’s not just Greg who is in foul trouble. Joel is struggling as well. I think some of it is the players around them… putrid perimeter D, poor use of picks by ballhandlers, etc.

hate to be a broken record

but the cure to his fouls is to use them wisely….FOUL GUYS REALLY HARD…and it will reduce his fouls.

by broyposse on Nov 4, 2009 10:56 PM PST up reply actions

that was very clear to me

at the one preseason game i went to, i know it was just preseason but of greg’s 6 fouls 3 or 4 of them were bailing someone else out. It must be tough to be the big man on the blazers

free bayless

by Cablinasian on Nov 4, 2009 10:58 PM PST up reply actions

he did once last night.

the two bad fouls were elbowing Horford and dropping his hand at the last second on Smith. Those sucked. The hipcheck he should have let go but it is Rudy’s fault for giving his man a freeway to the bucket.

eh… I liked him out jumping Horford for a few reebs, he had a nice dish or two if I recall. I liked him diving on the floor for a loose ball. Nothing in particular about last night, I was busy gnashing my teeth and wailing for most of the game to notice anything positive.

negative

he had a rebound last night and instead of pulling it back down, held it up high (really high, like arms still extended in the air) and put it back in for the score

i was like, “there you go, do more of that”

best thing i saw all night from him

you gotta see it again, he never brought the ball down

and jump right back up with both arms still way up there with the ball…

by broyposse on Nov 4, 2009 11:13 PM PST up reply actions

He left in his early 20’s because he felt life there wasn’t real. He’s smart, arrogant and he has a mouth on him. He says exactly what he thinks and you never have to guess what he’s feeling. That really comes in handy when dealing with bureaucracy. I fell for him the first time I met him.
