brandon jennings
sorry, I know a lot of you are going to hate this post, but its just that last night I watched 2 games: Bucks/Bulls and Blazers/Hawks.
After watching Brandon Jennings outwork Derrick Rose (he didn't outplay him necessary, but he definitely outworked him, playing D every possession and trying to penetrate every chance, not settling for jumpers), and then watching the Blazers, I couldn't help but dream.
I know its easy now to look back and say this, but damn, it would have been great to get Brandon Jennings. I know its a small sample size, he has a "selfish" rep, and that team chemistry is what has led to the Blazers resurgence in the past 4 years.
In June, we wanted an elite point guard. Everyone dreamed of it being Rubio. The idea of trading for Jennings never crossed my mind, nor did I ever hear it suggested. But after watching him torch the Bulls on penetration last night, and then watching the Blazers settling for jumpers in the 4th quarter, Jennings just seemed like the perfect fit.

It always seemed clear that Jennings is a great talent, and likely could have jumped straight from high school to the NBA if that was still allowed. In Italy he worked on his defense, pick and rolls skills and shot, but overall was still very inefficient and also had selected a team that was too deep with veterans that deserved more playing time. Kinda like Bayless and Mills now on the Blazers. And yeah, what he pulled in the pre-draft workouts (Sacramento, Minnesota) and even on draft night where he was the only likely lottery pick not initially in the audience showed that there were valid questions about his mental approach (if he had dropped to us, not sure how that would have reflected on his motivation and self-image of being a future star). That his skills translated so well to the NBA so far is encouraging, though likely teams will get better at defending him once they have more game tape to evaluate. From what I have seen he still has only one gear, stuck on go-go-go, and will have to learn to better change pace to be effective against all kinds of defenses that will get thrown at him to force him into turnovers and bad shots. That on a pretty mediocre to bad Bucks team he can take about as many shots as Coach Skiles allows him and he at least has athletic wings and a quality center is also a plus for his good stats so far.
But slowly things happen that they cannot help and the Blazers Fellowship of the Ring begins to break apart
